Welcome to the 40th Woolpit Festival Programme This year is the 40th anniversary of the Woolpit Festival. An exhibition featuring some of the memorable events over the years will be on display at the Festival venues. The Festival has its roots in the music weeks organised by Eileen Jones in the 70’s featuring local performers and this year we have organised the Festival along similar lines; all the events feature artists either born and brought up or based, in Suffolk and Norfolk. Before the Festival starts we have two fringe events; on April 24th Christopher Moore conductor of the Tudor Rose Singers will bring young musicians to the church for a showcase of the superb talent currently studying in our local schools. On 2nd May artists from last year’s lunchtime concert and music hall join forces to present a lunchtime concert of tunes from the musicals. The Festival Day on Saturday 13 June is a new event when we hope the village will be invaded by artists, craftspeople and musicians showing their skills in the Institute and the Church, with events for children and families on the Village Hall field culminating in a BarBQ. This is followed by a gig in the Village Hall by Norfolk band Addison’s Uncle supported by local groups The Larks and Green Shoots. The Festival opens on Wednesday 3rd June with a recital by Drinkstone based Laura Pooley who has appeared with Welsh National Opera. The next day sees a very different event –with the big band The Horn Factory. Based in Ipswich this 22 piece band – nearly all virtuosos in their own right - create a magnificent and exciting sound. It’s different again on Friday 5th with a visit from the Suffolk Poetry Society, who will be reading from their recent work. To round off the first week we have the Stowmarket Brass Band. The Churchgate Sinfonia from Bury St Edmunds presenting their music for a summer evening bring the Festival to a close on 14th June. We hope that the variety on offer will mean that everyone will find something of interest. Tickets are on sale at the Launch of the Festival on Saturday 11 April in the Institute (10.00 – 12.30) and through our new local box office: (boxoffice@Woolpitfestival.com) as well as the Old Post Office and Elm Tree Gallery.

A Night at the Shows

Laura Pooley

Margaret Marinkovic

Michael Clifton-Thomas

We are delighted to open this year’s Festival with ‘A Night at the Shows, from Covent Garden to Broadway’. Tonight’s performers are the soprano Laura Pooley and Michael Clifton-Thompson tenor accompanied by the pianist Margaret Marinkovic. Their programme includes solos, duets and arias from Carmen, La Boheme, Crazy for You and Westside Story. Laura was born in Essex. Her first passion for literature led her to study Classics and English at St John’s College, Oxford, where she graduated with first class honours and was awarded the Passmore Edwards Prize. She went on to study singing at the Royal College of Music, London, and left when she was offered the opportunity to join the chorus of Welsh National Opera. As a company member she performed in numerous operas taking several solo roles including Marzelline (Fidelio), Paggio (Rigoletto), Mascha (The Queen of Spades), and First Bridesmaid (Marriage of Figaro). In August 2010 Laura won the prestigious W.Towyn Roberts Scholarship at the National Eisteddfod in Wales, which enabled her to consolidate her studies at WIAV and branch out on a solo path.

Poetry and Music A delightful evening of poetry with musical interludes arranged through the Poets Society. There will be readings of favourite poems which many members of the audience will remember from childhood, interspersed with traditional music and much loved songs. The evening is arranged and presented by James Knox Whittet, president of the Suffolk Poetry Society. James James Knox Whittet Knox Whittet presents an evening of poetry, combining the best of well-known classics with selections of his own work. He will be accompanied by some musical friends, who will intersperse the evening with music and song. James was born and brought up in the Hebridean island of Islay where his father was the head gardener at Dunlossit Castle. Although he now lives in Norfolk, many of his poems are inspired by his Hebridean childhood. He was educated at New Battle Abbey College and Cambridge University. His most recent work When Kafka met Einstein combines the playful and the intellectual, moving easily between Wittgenstein and the Teletubbies, or the Scottish islands and Newport Pagnell Service Station.

The Churchgate Sinfonia Music for a Summer Festival

We are delighted to welcome back this wonderful 26 piece orchestra to the Festival to perform Music for a Summer Festival. This event will bring our festival to a close on a memorable and beautiful high note. Churchgate Sinfonia under its musical director James Recknell has put together an evening of orchestral music for a summer festival. With some perennial favourites and some less known works it will be an evening for all to enjoy. Churchgate Sinfonia has a growing reputation for its small scale orchestral concerts of music from the baroque era to twentieth century classics. It puts on 4 concerts a year in Bury St Edmunds and surrounding villages raising money for charity. The Woolpit Festival concert will showcase the Churchgate Sinfonia’s excellent wind players in the uplifting Strauss serenade and the Mozart Sinfonia Concertante. The Elgar Introduction and allegro will put the string players through their paces and the wind and strings get together to perform a sublime Schubert symphony to round off the concert.

Strauss Serenade in E flat major for wind

Mozart Sinfonia Concertante for oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon and orchestra

Elgar Introduction and Allegro for strings Schubert 5th Symphony
