JAKARTA PARASOL

Kota Tua, Jakarta, Indonesia JAKARTA PARASOL: SHELTERED GROUND 5th Year | Design Thesis Studio Design Tutor: Dr Amanda Achmadi November 2017 The modernisation of Jakarta, Indonesia has seen much of the old parts of the city neglected. Many parts of the old town that were associated with the Dutch colonial heritage and historical buildings were left abandoned to deteriorate. Rural-urban migration has escalated which led to the growth of informal settlements along the periphery of the city. In response, this thesis proposes to address the issue of inadequate housing supply and affordability in Jakarta, which leads to the proliferation of informal settlement and their constant forced evictions and displacement by the city authority. The main question to ask is could the city’s underutilised urban historical settings be adapted and reused to provide temporary shelter for the evictees? Kota Tua provides an opportunity for temporary shelter combined with tourism, which could initiate an alternative public engagement with both the issues of forced evictions and housing shortage in Jakarta. The project also includes a market, which facilitates and celebrates the daily activities and social network of a kampung, and channels economic gain from tourism to the local urban poor and kampung communities.

ADAPTIVE HYBRIDS

Fishermans Bend, Victoria, Australia ADAPTIVE HYBRIDS 4th Year | Design Studio Design Tutor: David Brand + Steve Whitford June 2016 As a response to the post-industrial development at Lorimer Street, most of the existing structure including the cement silos are remained to preserve its unique industrial characteristics. This project also strives for density and diversity to create a self-sustainable neighbourhood through the introduction of various programs and hybridization of typologies to accommodate increasing population; adaptive to its pre-existing surroundings at the same time. The project focuses on three aspects which are: maximising land use, achieving density and diversity, adapting to existing fabric.

The proposed site is utilised to its capacity to provide new housing and commercial options while the provision of public amenities and infrastructure is not neglected. It is designed to supplement and increase the variety of uses for the original industrial site with new residential, commercial and smart industry offices. Retention of the cement silos and the sawtooth structure is an important step towards preserving the identity of the former industrial district and continue to make the site’s history visible. 19

OFFICE TOWER

308 Exhibition Street, Melbourne, Australia OFFICE TOWER 4th Year | Applied Construction Tutor: Dr Giorgio Marfella, Ben Sheridan June 2016 The concept behind is to create a mixed-use tower of retail and office spaces that embraces community spirit in the heart of Melbourne CBD. Situated at the intersection of Exhibition Street and Lonsdale Street, the 55-storey office tower will reach 318m and set to be another landmark in Melbourne CBD. The office spaces are placed between a retail podium and an observatory at the tower’s pinnacle. The ground floor retail podium is open to Lonsdale Street, making new meeting place while activating public realm at street level allowing uninterrupted circulation for the public. The podium is landscaped with trees that extend the existing green space from Carlton Gardens, bringing green elements into the building. The tower is divided into four zones of 10-floor office, each separated by one transfer floor that houses mechanical and service plants. Each zone will feature its own atrium space that acts as a gathering space which aims to foster community sense in a vertical workplace. The atrium will also fill with vegetations to create a “campus-style typology” which improve the internal environment for a 21st-century workplace. The tower is designed on rectangular floor plates which recedes progressively for each zone towards the pinnacle.

OVERALL 3D MODEL Proposed double skin facade enhances the indoor quality environment for the office. Each office stack has its own atrium that enhance stack ventilation to cool down the enveloped indoor air.

REINFORCED CONCRETE STRUCTURE

EXTERNAL SKIN STEEL DIAGRID SYSTEM

The structure transfer the load vertically, supporting most of the compression forces from the floor slabs above.

The steel diagrid system provides extratension force to the building, adding strength to counter against lateral forces.

OUTER CURTAIN WALL SYSTEM

INNER CURTAIN WALL SYSTEM

21mm laminated glass assembly: 10mm low-iron glass + 1mm PVB interlayer + low-e coating + 10mm low-iron glass

30mm laminated glass assembly: 10mm low-iron glass with low-e coating + 10mm air space + 10mm low-iron glass

PVB laminate is proposed on the outer wall facade as it constantly withstanding a lot of pressure and impact forces from the wind.

Inner glazing separates working space and the internal atrium, additional 10mm air gap on curtain wall units can reduce heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer.

HOUSE EXTENSION

PERSONAL PROJECT

Puchong, Selangor, Malaysia Role: Conceptual Design, Design Development Jan 2016

Personal project that includes an extension on the backyard of an existing house, creating a separate kitchen for cooking and dining purpose. Before the extension, small flooding often occured during heavy rainfall due to the poor stormwater drainage. Another issues was the extra heat produced during cooking could not ventilate properly, making the dining experience uncomfortable. The extension is designed based on the idea of sunroom which allows sunlight and views of the landscape while sheltering from the weather. It provides extra cooking space while also function as a space for drying laundry. The glazed roof provides shelter from the rain while still allow sunlight that would help the drying process. The space could be open up for family gatherings and small occassions which directly linked to the community linear garden.
