DESIGN STATEMENT Sustainable architecture is no longer an alien term in this world of industrialisation and
globalisation. Sustainability has three dimension, namely environmental, economic and social sustainability. Sustaining humanity is a long term approach that requires efforts from various fields in order to create an ideal built environment for the society to live in. An ideal sustainable world shall be a place where development of today doesn’t sacrifice the development of future where economy, social and environmental developments are in balance. Environmental sustainability can be easily achieved by incorporating advanced technology or passive design into the building which is the fundamental of design approach nowadays. However, architects don’t just design buildings that achieved environmental sustainability, they should also take on social responsibility to design for the sustainability of the society and humanity. Architects should not forget that their architectural solutions have the impact on society. All solutions are just merely a tool to achieve the goal of advancing society in all kinds of aspect, whether in technological field or humanitarian field. Development in technology has given rise to social issues that discourage the people from interacting with each other. I envisioned an urban built environment with open public spaces that promote interaction between humans. The public spaces that I envisioned shall be accessible by all types of users, with zero tolerance towards discrimination in terms of age, gender, races or religions. The introduction of open public spaces in urban context does not only break down the formal blocks of building, it also allow direct communication and interaction between humans. Through introducing open public spaces, I hope to promote equality among different backgrounds of users in order to unite a diverse community in a global scale. I was exposed to the construction industry at an early age as my father is a contractor who does renovation on residential projects. I followed him to the construction site once in a while but I was not aware that his job is also part of the architecture. It was the family trip to Japan that I made me wanted to become architect. I was astonished by the way the Japanese designed their houses and they planned the cities. Although I was just merely appreciating the form and space of the buildings during the trip, I knew I want to learn more about architecture. Through this course, I was able to understand that architecture is not all about beautiful facades and good looking shapes. I learned that architecture also require deep thoughts and responsibility as it will bring impact on the environment and the society. I wish to continue pursue my architecture dream in a pragmatic and holistic approach to achieve balance and sustainability in environment and society. The projects in this portfolio present the attempt to create architectural solutions for different communities in Malaysia such as the indigenous community in Gombak, urban community in Kuala Lumpur and aging community in Petaling Jaya. Each of the project has their own needs and request which present challenges to provide solutions that is responsive to their needs and requests while doesn’t neglecting the environmental context of the site.
