elcome aboard our Royal Orchid Service. We are getting to the end of the year, and the high travel season is approaching. THAI has adjusted its traffic programme in response to meet the yearend demand by increasing flight frequencies on high-demand routes, especially on the European services between Bangkok and London, Paris, Oslo, Moscow and Brussels, as well as from Copenhagen and Stockholm to Phuket. As for the Asian and Australian routes, THAI has added frequencies on the routes to Brisbane in Australia, Tokyo, Nagoya, Chengdu, Hong Kong, Singapore, Jakarta and Bali. THAI also offers flights to Gaya and Varanasi in India, bringing Buddhist pilgrims to visit holy places during this travel season. I am also pleased to announce that THAI was named Best South-East Asian Airline and Best Airline Business Class in the TTG Travel Award 2014. November is a special month for the Thai people as we celebrate Loy Krathong festival, one of Thailand’s most beautiful traditions, which is well known around the world and very popular among overseas visitors. THE KINGDOM’S MASTERPIECES Admire the intricate pieces of textiles produced by members of the SUPPORT Foundation under Her Majesty the Queen’s Royal Patronage at the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles. Home to a trove of priceless pieces of work, the museum also boasts a display of the first national costumes created by Her Majesty and 30 exquisite dresses from Her Majesty’s personal collection. The museum houses four galleries, each one taking visitors through a brief history of Thai textiles through exhibits, photographs, film and multimedia presentations. Embroidery work with super fine silk threads
is an extremely delicate process that requires the patience and skills of a true master. At the Arts of the Kingdom Museum, some breathtaking masterpieces can be admired in their full splendour, from village scenes and outstanding places of interest to scenes from classical literature such as Inao and Himavan. These works are so refined they resemble a painting from a distance, but a closer look will reveal a painstakingly refined process involving up to four artisans working for months to complete a true masterpiece.

Worldly fun Global Village, the popular outdoor family entertainment attraction, opens for its 19th season on 6 November. London’s iconic department store, Harrods, has launched a pop-up that features some of Italy’s top restaurants. Called Stelle di Stelle, the store is situated on the lower ground floor and will feature the signature dishes of the host restaurant of the month. The line-up from November is Torre del Saracino with two Michelin stars, Enoteca Pinchiorri with three Michelin stars, and Piazza Duomo with two Michelin stars. Puppet Parade
How familiar is the Western world with Thai puppets? We attended a forum in Prague once and showed them all the different types of puppets we have in Thailand, from hoon luang, hoon wang naa, hoon lakorn lek to hoon krabok, hoon sai, and hoon nang – we have a complete set of hand, rod, stringed and shadow puppets, to everyone’s fascination. What they are most excited about is that Thai puppets are very lifelike. The reason for this is that our puppets have many strings that act like nerves to control the puppet’s every movement.
As Bangkok prepares to host the Harmony World Puppet Carnival this November, master puppeteer Nimit Pipithkul talks to Sawasdee about the increasing popularity of Thai puppets with the global audience
Since its founding in 2004, the Sema Thai marionettes group (semathai. com) and the Joe Louis Puppet Theatre have competed in a string of World Puppet Carnivals and collected prestigious prizes along the way, including the Most Poetic Creation award in Prague in 2008, Best Traditional Original Performance in 2009, and Best Artistic Creation and Best Young Puppeteers awards in Jakarta last year. Despite these accolades, only a handful of people in Thailand appreciate their achievements, let alone the art of puppetry itself. But Nimit Pipithkul, a man who has played an active role in supporting 42

and promoting the industry for years, is confident this will change once Thailand plays host to the World Puppet Carnival from 1 to 10 November. Why was Thailand chosen to host the World Puppet Carnival this year? Thai puppet troupes have put Thailand in the spotlight at the World Puppet Carnival in Prague for several years now, so the European crowd knows about and loves us. Thankfully, I managed to convince the organisers of the carnival to come to Bangkok this year at the Royal Grounds of Sanam Luang.

Where does puppetry stand in Thailand’s cultural history? Puppetry was a way of life – much like how going to the movies or eating out is to us today. Historical records may vary, but my understanding is that shadow puppets were the first type of puppets that existed. Some say they first appeared during the Ayutthaya era, others say it was not until the Sukhothai era. You see, shadow puppets were very easy to make and enjoy, and early records show that people used leaves to perform shadow plays. Later, this developed into puppets made from cowhide and strings were attached so that the characters could “talk”. That was how it all began – it’s a beautiful transformation.
How do Thai puppets differ from those made in other countries? Thailand has a long monarchy system that still exists today and, believe it or not, this has had a huge impact on our puppets. The Royal family has always provided funding for the puppets to ensure their development as well as their survival. Thai puppets are, therefore, more elegant and wear more elaborate costumes than others in the region. Each puppetry culture also takes on traditional dance moves of its country. Like traditional Thai dance, Thai puppets move slowly and gracefully and are, therefore, very lifelike. The way we care for our puppets is also different in every country. Nimit Pipithkul’s top suggestions on where visitors can go in Thailand to enjoy and learn more about the art 1 The best place to start is at the National Museum, where you’ll see hoon luang and hoon wang naa. It’s important to learn about the history of Thai puppets first and these two are considered the masters of all Thai puppets.
2 For puppet shows, I’d recommend Baan Tookatoon and Joe Louis Puppet Theatre at Asiatique. For something very local, go to the show at Baan Silapin in Klong Baang Luang. 3 The Sema Thai Puppet Theatre is my own theatre, and we hold puppet shows in Thai and English, as well as workshops on how to make puppets.

You have your own school where you teach anyone interested in learning more about puppets – even how to make them. What inspired you to do this? I actually started off learning about hoon krabok (rod puppets) at Thammasat University and was later inspired to set up the Sema Thai marionettes group after seeing how these performances helped children to focus more. The performances also taught them about Buddhism. To this day, teaching young children continues to be our priority.

hen we talk about Thai musical composers, the first name that comes to mind is Euah Sunthornsanan. The founder of Suntaraporn big band, Euah was undoubtedly one of the greatest musical composers in the history of Thai music. In addition to his ability to play a variety of musical instruments, he was also a singer, composer, bandleader, conductor and music teacher. In short, he was a true music legend. The musical prodigy was born in Amphawa, Samut Songkhram in 1910. He founded Suntaraporn in

1939, deriving the band’s name from combining his family name (Sunthornsanan) with his wife’s name (Arporn). The band became highly successful and performed extensively in the Kingdom, as well as throughout the region, including in Laos, Cambodia and China. Euah was an active bandleader and a prolific composer until his death from cancer in 1981. Songs written by Euah are considered to be literary and musical masterpieces that harmoniously blend traditional Thai elements with the instruments of Western classical music. His songs are unique and have been taken as the prototype of Western-style Thai music today. Some of his well-known
songs include “Khor Hai Muen Derm”, “Nang Fah Chumlaeng” and “Pran Loh Neau”. He also wrote many songs for the celebration of Thai festivals that are still played today, such as “Sawasdee Phi Mai” and “Rumwong Loy Krathong”. Thanks to his achievements over the years, he was the first Thai musical artist to be honoured by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as “Personality of the Year” in 2010, which put him alongside the world’s leading composers including Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and Chopin. “Although all of his songs are written in Thai, music is a universal language that can be appreciated
worldwide. That’s why he was chosen by UNESCO as Personality of the Year. This prestigious award is a great honour not only for Suntaraporn, but also for the country,” says Atiporn Senavong, Euah’s daughter. “During his lifetime, he wrote more than 2,000 songs covering a wide range of subjects. Some of his songs are known all over the world, such as ‘Rumwong Loy Krathong’. However, the songs that he took the greatest pride in were those written for HM the King, HM the Queen and the royal family, especially ‘Racha Pen Sanga Hang Kwane’, which was the first tune penned for His Majesty the King. It was played for the first time at Don Mueang International

Apart from the Suntaraporn band, Euah also founded the Suntaraporn Music School in 1969, which coincided with the 30th anniversary of the band. Over the years, the school has produced numerous famous singers such as Daojai Paijitr and Pornsulee Vijavej. Today, the Suntaraporn Music School is still open for those who want to learn how to sing Suntaraporn songs. The Suntaraporn Foundation, founded in 2002, organises special events such as concerts and musicals, and to ensure that the music continues to be
popular with a new generation, it also regularly organises a singing contest in collaboration with educational institutions such as Sripatum University, Silpakorn University and Suan Dusit Rajabhat University. I
n the seaport town of Trani, Italy, a dozen or so scraggly fishermen have lined the water’s edge with cardboard tables laden with today’s impressive catch. The seafood is fresh from the deep, hauled up not too long ago from the surrounding crystalclear waters. From my perch on a window at Hotel San Paolo al Convento, I observe the men enticing passers-by to their makeshift stalls with calls of “vieni”.
They don’t have to try too hard. A cheerful nonna buys a dozen prawns for tonight’s family dinner, a commis picks up some scallops for the next service, and the rare tourist stops by to peer at the ugly monkfish. This is Puglia, one of the most diverse yet lesser-known parts of Italy, located in the southeast and lining the “heel” of the country’s boot-shaped peninsula. I’ve been to Italy numerous times before – I’d even lived in Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance, for a year in my late teens – but never have I seen this side of the country... until now. I imagine this is what the more popular parts of the Italian countryside felt like 50 years ago, before the throngs of tourists took over the likes of Tuscany and the Amalfi Coast. Here are all of the country’s charms: quaint little towns, pristine beaches with gorgeous views of the Adriatic and Ionian seas, fresh and inventive food, and wonderfully underrated wine. It’s the food and the wine that I’m here for, the Puglian tourism division having organised a trip for journalists to sample the region’s distinctive offerings. Unlike the northern parts of Italy, Puglia is defined by a more Mediterranean diet: seasonal vegetables, plenty of seafood, only the leanest of meats and, of course, lots of wine. I was told early on that the majority of Puglia’s visitors are Italians who want to escape their country. Confused? I was too, until I realised Puglia is, in fact, closer to Greece than to Rome. As a historical port, it’s been invaded by – and has hence been influenced culturally by – the Romans, Greeks, Normans, Turks and Spanish, amongst others. 59

There are even a couple of small villages near the city of Lecce where people still speak an archaic ItalianGreek dialect called Griko. All this gives it a diverse melting-pot feel that’s unlike any other part of Italy. Going on the road and sampling what you find along the way is really the only way to truly experience such a varied region. My companions and I started our journey in the very south of Puglia, in Salento, where we came across the Duca Carlo Guarini (ducacarloguarini. it), a winery whose moniker is often synonymous with the region. The Guarini family once owned at least a third of all the land in Puglia and can trace its roots back to the 11th-century Normans. Its current owner has less grandiose ambitions and would rather just settle down with some wine. He ferments his grapes the old-fashioned way, using vast subterranean tanks. It’s how they did it hundreds of years ago, and the results speak for themselves.
Guarini is known for his use of the primitivo grape, one of the region’s native varieties and often compared to the Californian Zinfandel. His most famous bottle, the Boemondo, has a crusader’s sword on the label in honour of his roots. Ironically enough, Guarini didn’t even begin bottling it until the ’80s – it was mostly sold in kegs before then. Now, the region can’t get enough of the stuff. As we drove through different parts of Puglia, the landscapes started to become more familiar to the eye: thousand-year-old olive trees, vineyards as far as the eye can see, and a slightly rundown masseria (country house) gleaming white in the midday sun. It all becomes quite common until you reach Alberobello, the town of the trulli. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Alberobello is possibly the tourist centrepiece of Puglia, mostly because of its iconic trulli: white-stone circular houses that seem to have come straight from medieval times. Their most
renowned feature is the coned roofs, which were designed to keep those inside cool in the summer and warm in the winter. The town is undoubtedly filled with tourists, but it also houses some of the finest restaurants in the region. Avoid the crowds who would lead you to La Cantina or L’Aratro and head straight to the Michelin-starred Il Poeta Contadino (ilpoetacontadino.it). It aims to recreate both the ambience and food from the region’s medieval past, taking diners into a time warp. Ornate chandeliers and classic wax candles dot much of the restaurant, and the dishes are naturally heavy on the fish: rustic offerings like mullet paired with simple potatoes or monkfish alongside seasonal vegetables. Near Alberobello is the Castel del Monte, an area of Puglia named after the vast falcon-watching castle sitting atop a hill. It’s one of the very few regions recognised by Italy’s DOCG quality assurance label, and chief

Not far from Brindisi – Salento Airport is Puglia’s most famous resort, the Borgo Egnazia (borgoegnazia.com). You might’ve seen its immense facade in the tabloids: Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake got married here not too long ago. Set across 40 acres, only its golf course separates it from the Adriatic and it recreates the style of a small Puglian town. For something a little simpler, both the Masseria Potenti (www.tenutapotenti.it) in Manduria and the Masseria Montelauro (masseriamontelauro.it) in Otranto are recommended. The former offers a family-style country farm where warm hospitality and delicious homestyle food await; the latter has a more upscale resort feel, but it still keeps things simple and personal.
EAT
Il Poeta Contadino and Corteinfiore are two of the best restaurants in the region, each offering classic and modern spins on traditional Puglian dishes. But if you’re looking for more options, LaltroBaffo (laltrobaffo.com) in Otranto puts an equally modern take on the region’s cuisine, while Gallo Restaurant (gallorestaurant.it) in Trani has a seafood-only menu that people come far and wide to sample.
DRINK
Visits to wineries are a must when travelling through Puglia, but keep in mind that appointments are necessary. Top picks include Duca Carlo Guarini and Rivera. Equally interesting is the incredibly exclusive Carvinea (carvinea.com), as well as the science-based wines at Tenute di Emera (claudioquarta.it). And if you’re looking to be entertained, Francesco Winspeare, owner of Castel di Salve (casteldisalve.com) is quite a character.

among those who helped insure that merit was the Rivera winery (rivera.it). Far from the oldest in the region (it only set up shop in the ’60s), Rivera is nonetheless one of the most forwardthinking. Its founder Sebastiano de Corato predicted that Puglia would one day become a major wine region and marketed his wines as such. It’s arguable whether Rivera’s Il Falcone was the wine that put Puglia on the map, but there’s no doubt it’s now one of the region’s most popular internationally. Named after the castle, the wine is a 70/30 mix of the native Nero di Troia grape and the country’s more popular Montepulciano – for me, it has come to define the wines of Puglia. Bold, medium-bodied flavours dazzle the palate but are nonetheless light enough for pairing in the day or at night. In many ways, it’s a metaphor for the entire region. But for all that Alberobello and Castel del Monte offers, with their gorgeous trulli, incredible wineries and surprisingly high number of fannypacked tourists, it was Trani that
impressed us the most. The town feels like the heart and soul of Puglia, the place where all its finest elements come together at once. Nowhere is that more apparent than in its food and, for those in the know, Corteinfiore (corteinfiore.it) is the epitome of Puglian fine dining. Packed to the brim with locals, the restaurant is high-end but worth every penny. Here, you’re treated to the most fascinating takes on classic Puglian cuisine, fresh seafood and vegetables dished up using innovative, original methods, alongside white wine and even whiter tablecloths. Stumble upstairs afterwards to one of the few private B&B rooms or, better yet, stay at the Hotel San Paolo al Convento (hotelsanpaoloalconventotrani. it), whose views continue to stick in my mind as I write this. The final morning of the trip, before I was due to catch the 7am train to Rome, I looked out the window of my hotel room to see the Trani harbour just waking up. Seagulls were breakfasting on last night’s bready leftovers and joggers were running off their Med
diets. There was a feeling that this was all very unreal: Puglia seemed too beautiful, too healthy and too moreish to exist altogether. And as much as I hated letting the world know about such hidden pleasures, such was my duty – and it’s safe to say I’ll be back very soon. wo words – road trip – conjure up a richness of possibility and a feeling of freedom and adventure in a way that no other phrase in the travel lexicon can. “Long-haul flight” doesn’t quite have the same ring, does it? Since the 1940s, the road trip has inspired a prolific cultural niche: hundreds of movies, books and songs, from Easy Rider to Kerouac’s On the Road, have romanticised journeying on the open road – and it’s no surprise that most of them are from the United States. 79

For over a century, a vast network of roads has crisscrossed the third largest country in the world, through its spectacularly varied terrain – mountains, deserts, forests, lakes, swamplands and rocky coastlines. There’s no doubt about it – the US is made for driving, and its most iconic course – a coast-to-coast trip – is a rite of passage for any avid road-tripper. Twenty years after being inspired by Thelma and Louise at the impressionable age of ten, I found myself turning the key in the ignition of a rental car (an unromantic but fuel-efficient Hyundai Elantra with 300 miles on the clock) at JFK airport 80
in traffic-choked New Jersey and set off, heading south, armed with a Google Maps app. Ahead of me was a 16-state, 7,000-kilometre meandering route through the south of the country to the west – a jam-packed threeweek adventure of one technicolour highlight after another. On the first leg, I listened to blues music and honky tonk in neon-lit bars in Nashville and got my first taste of Southern hospitality – a sunny friendliness as warm as the sticky humid weather – before falling in love with romantic, intoxicating New Orleans. The city is back on its feet after Hurricane Katrina, with
an energy that draws you in from the moment you arrive. I strolled through street after beautiful street of elegant colonial houses, ate enormous amounts of fried seafood, drank cocktails in bars that looked like part of the set of The Great Gatsby, danced to jazz bands in sweaty nightclubs, and entertained fantasies of becoming a musician and moving to the Big Easy. But the road was waiting. Leaving behind gracious old plantation mansions and the thick swamps of Louisiana, I headed due west, like those 19th-century pioneers (minus the horse and wagon), to Texas. I was prepared to see the monster-sized trucks, the

huge Lone Star state flags, the even bigger highways and the guns-andammo shops. But I wasn’t expecting liberal and arty Austin – a city of more than 1,000 food trucks, exceedingly welcoming inhabitants and amazing live music. A surprise highlight was Marfa, a tiny town of 2,000 people in the middle of nowhere on the western edge of the state, which was an unlikely desert oasis of art and culture, especially given the conservatism of Texas. Put on the map by New York artist Donald Judd in the 1970s, it’s an unexpected mix of art installations (most famously, the world’s most incongruous Prada “shop”), galleries, gourmet restaurants, food trucks and funky hotels surrounded by lonely ranches and the grand open spaces of the Chihuahuan Desert. It was on the road to Marfa and travelling north in one of the least populated areas of the US that the landscape became truly magnificent – horizon-skimming plains of silvery grass dotted with dusty twisters and edged by the Chinati Mountains were cut through by straight, empty roads that looked like they would go on forever. I almost expected tumbleweeds to roll past. 82

New Mexico was a painterly desert palette of apricot, green, dusky red lines of mountains and splashes of charcoal rain clouds, while further north, southern Utah was even more astounding. Here was an enormous otherworldly backdrop of terracotta sand punctuated with hundreds of dramatic sandstone formations – like limbs pointing to the sky – that bore almost no scars of human habitation. The road west of Utah offered up more magical roadside stops – from the wind- and water-carved sandstone passageways of Antelope Canyon to the vista of the blue-green Colorado river winding its way through a huge canyon at Horseshoe Bend, to the most unforgettable Grand Canyon. Being in that mind-boggling wonder for the first time was a humbling and profound experience. You can’t help but feel microscopic gazing into an incomprehensibly large crevasse formed by six million years of extreme geological and natural forces.
Four hours’ drive away is Las Vegas, a city famous for hedonistic excess, and a place vastly different from the Grand Canyon. Unashamedly brash, it’s a surreal and mesmerising world of neon lights, pool parties, bars, supersized nightclubs and bizarre, gigantic reconstructions of famous landmarks. A dazzling two-day stop was just enough time to sample the cocktails and casinos before escaping (with some relief) to cruise west through glittering snakes of traffic to Los Angeles and the Pacific Ocean, a welcome shock of blue after thousands of kilometres of desert. From LA, the legendary road trip north is on Highway 1, which traces the coastline north to San Francisco. It’s a scenic drive the whole way, but the most famous highlight (and deservedly so) is Big Sur, a 140-kilometre stretch of undeveloped wilderness with towering mistswathed cliffs plunging into the ocean,
giant redwoods, postcard views at just about every turn and campsites overlooking deserted beaches. Drinking a Californian Merlot by the fire at one of these campsites on the last night of my trip, I reflected on the thousands of kilometres of road that had unfurled and all I’d experienced over three weeks. The cross-country US road trip, as writer Paul Theroux put it, is “a supreme example of the journey as the destination”. Despite the greatest-hits stops, the trip wasn’t about getting anywhere. It was travel for travel’s sake – a glorious, constant movement through the heartland of one of the most diverse countries in the world – and it felt like a cinematic dream. Distance Learning via Satellite from His Majesty’s Private School

part from funding unity and support in all sectors of society, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej attaches great importance in providing education opportunities to young people, realising that knowledge and the ability of local people are crucial to the success of national development. The royal concern on education can be seen in the initial stage of royally initiated projects, which were involved mainly with knowledge development and the establishment of schools in rural areas under Royal Patronage, among them the Rajaprajanugroh, Romklao and Phra Dabos schools. More importantly, His Majesty the King initiated the distance learning via satellite programme, which is recognised as a model of teaching and an effective vehicle for lifelong learning. The first transmission of the distance learning via satellite programme began in 1995, with Wang Klai Kangwol School – His Majesty’s private school in Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan province – as a satellite-based distance learning radio and television station. The programme provides education at

primary, secondary and vocational levels in accordance with the curriculum of the Ministry of Education, via satellite to more than 20,000 schools nationwide. It also links with schools in neighbouring countries, such as Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam and southern China, with educational broadcasts in English and Chinese. Moreover, the Distance Learning Foundation, which is responsible for the programme, also cooperates with the University of Oregon in the United States in training teachers in English, mathematics and science through the videoconference system. Using modern technology, the programme provides local students at distant schools with a virtual learning environment. It is considered the first of its kind in the world to disseminate basic education to the population across the country and abroad. With the royal initiative in distance learning and through His Majesty’s great compassion toward his subjects, this programme has become an education strategy for human resource development, thus contributing to the learning of children and youth, who are the future of the country.

Customs Laws Alcoholic Beverages and Cigarettes Alcoholic beverages and cigarettes are controlled items. A passenger is allowed to bring 1 litre of alcoholic beverages and 200 cigarettes into Thailand free of duty. The exceeding amount will be prosecuted and confiscated.

Carry-On Baggage
Passengers may carry one item of hand baggage to place in a closed overhead bin or under the seat in front of them. The overall dimensions of such baggage should not exceed 115cm (45 inches) or 58 X 34 X 23cm. Its overall weight should not exceed 7kg.

All drinks are served free of charge. Only alcoholic drinks served by our cabin attendants may be consumed. It is recommended that you drink nonalcoholic drinks as flying can cause dehydration, but we are happy to serve alcoholic drinks to passengers aged 18 years and over. Cabin attendants may decline to serve alcohol to passengers who appear to be intoxicated. This regulation has been implemented for passenger safety, in accordance with THAI’s air traffic policy and procedures.
Special Meals
Vegetarian, low-fat, infant, children, kosher and Muslim meals are available on board by special request. Requests for special meals must be made when making your reservation at least 48 hours in advance.
Speciality Items
A wide range of items is available on Thai Airways International flights for passengers with special requests, including toys and bibs. Ask one of our cabin crew should you require one of the above, or need any assistance.

There are special services for children aged between 5 and 16 who are travelling alone. A fee applies. Please give us advance notice so that your child can enjoy our constant care and supervision throughout his/ her journey.
Communication
Some of our aircraft are equipped with cordless telephones and facsimile machines. The charge for their use is US$8 per minute.
Any person who brings or takes an aggregate amount of foreign currency exceeding US$20,000 or its equivalent out of or into the Kingdom of Thailand shall declare such amount of foreign currency to a customs officer. Failure to declare upon bringing foreign currency that exceeds the amount restricted by law or its equivalent out of or into the Kingdom of Thailand or making any false declaration to a customs officer is breaking customs laws. If you have any enquiries, please consult a customs officer.

For your safety Please study the safety card in your front seat pocket and locate the closest emergency exits near you. Be sure to keep your seat belt fastened during takeoff and landing, and at all times while seated. For safety reasons, passengers are asked to refrain from sleeping on the aircraft floor and unnecessary walking during the flight. Sleeping passengers may be injured during unexpected turbulence unless firmly restrained by their seat belt. After landing, please remain in your seat with your seat belt fastened until the aircraft has come to a complete stop and the “fasten seat belt” sign has been switched off.
Electronic devices
1. Prohibited devices on board at all times for your safety – portable electronic devices such as radio transmitters, walkie-talkies, portable radio-controlled toys, radios, television receivers, citizen band radios, pagers, electronic toys and wireless devices (mouse, bluetooth, etc) – must be switched off once the aircraft doors have closed and shall not be used on board during the entire flight. 2. For safety reasons during takeoff and landing, all mobile phones and acceptable electronic devices – including portable video equipment, laptops or portable PCs without printers, cassettes/CD/DVD/ mini disc/MP3 players (used with headphones only), electronic games,

electronic calculators, electronic shavers and tablets – must be turned off or switched to flight mode and are not allowed to be used until the fasten seat belt sign has been turned off. However, use of any portable device suspected of interfering with flight operation shall be prohibited. 3. Acceptable devices on board for entire flight: hearing aids, heart pacemakers, electronic watches and authorised inflight equipment are allowed during the flight.
Beverages on board
Alcoholic drinks will not be served to passengers aged under 18 years. Cabin attendants reserve the right to decline serving alcohol to passengers who appear intoxicated. Consumption of personal alcoholic drinks is prohibited on board at any time.
Smoking
Smoking is not permitted by law on all THAI flights.
The regulations have been implemented for passenger safety, in accordance with THAI’s air traffic policy and procedures. THAI’s flight attendants follow specific measures that strictly comply with safety regulations set by the civil aviation board to secure the safety of aircraft, passengers and airline property.

Gentle Inflight Exercises เทคนิคบริหารร่างกายเมือ่ อยูบ่ นเครือ่ งบิน There are some gentle exercises you can do that will improve your comfort level during and after a flight. Most important is that passengers should perform leg exercises and simple arm movements, especially during long flights. We recommend you do these exercises three or four times every hour. None of them should be performed if they cause pain.

er Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, President of Princess Srinagarindra Award Foundation under Royal Patronage, recently presented a certificate and insignia pin to Flt Lt Montree Jumrieng, Executive Vice President of Corporate Strategy and Sustainable Development Department, Thai Airways International, in recognition of THAI’s support for the Princess Srinagarindra Award Foundation’s work during the past 15 years. The Princess Srinagarindra Award Foundation was established in commemoration of the centenary birthday anniversary of Her Royal Highness the late Princess Srinagarindra Mahidol in 2000, in recognition of her exemplary contribution toward progress and advancement in the field of nursing and social services. The primary purpose of the establishment of the foundation was to confer the Princess Srinagarindra Award. The award is conferred annually upon an individual registered nurse, registered midwife, group of registered nurses or group of registered midwives who has made a significant contribution, through direct care, research, education or management, within the nursing or midwifery profession and/or for the development of the nursing or midwifery profession.

HAI recently received two awards at the 25th annual TTG Travel Awards 2014 ceremony and gala dinner, for Best South-East Asian Airline and Best Airline Business Class. Accepting the awards on behalf of THAI management was Mr Viroj Sirihoracha, Vice President of Sales & Distribution Regional Department, from Mr Sugree Sithivanich, Deputy Governor for Marketing Communications (TAT), and Mr Darren Ng, Managing Director of TTG Asia Media. Prior to the awards ceremony, Mr Suraphon Israngura Na Ayuthya, THAI Executive Vice President of Commercial, officiated the joint press conference for the opening of the Incentive Travel & Conventions, Meeting Asia and Corporate Travel World Asia Pacific 2014 (IT & CMA/CTW 2014). THAI and Amadeus Celebrate Successful TSCP Implementation

hai Airways International and Amadeus recently celebrated the success of the “THAI Star Common Platform (TSCP)” Project, which uses the Amadeus Altéa Suite to provide efficient full-service passenger experience. THAI has taken the Amadeus Altéa Suite to provide the passenger service instead of the THAI ROYAL system, which has been used for 40 years. The implementation of the Amadeus Altéa system is to improve technology in every aspect of passenger service. In October 2013, THAI implemented the first system in areas such as sales and reservation, inventory and ticketing, and departure control. Currently, THAI is in the final process of a second phase of improvement, which is for the departure control system (DCS). The second phase is estimated to finish in November 2014. The THAI team and TSCP project team recently held a celebration at Rama Garden Hotel. THAI presented thank-you certificates to the TSCP team for the successful Amadeus TSCP implementation.

ub Lieutenant Anussorn Naksrichum, Executive Vice President, Aviation Business Unit, Thai Airways International, represented THAI in accepting the Excellent Catering Service Gold Award 2013 from EVA Air. Presenting the award was Mr Clark Yeh, Managing Director of EVA Air in Thailand. THAI Catering provides inflight catering services to EVA Air, which has been an excellent customer airline of THAI. Since its establishment in 1960, THAI Catering has been offering superb quality inflight meals and reliable service for customer airlines operating from Thailand. Its facilities include a 90,000-square-metre facility that can produce 87,000 meals per day.

In order to increase competitiveness and service level, effective from November 2014, THAI is implementing a new policy to allow an additional 10 kilogrammes of checked baggage for all classes of travel on all THAI f lights, except on f lights to and from the United States. Royal First Class passengers may now check in 50 kilogrammes of baggage, from 40 kilogrammes previously. Royal Silk Class passengers are now allowed 40 kilogrammes (from 30), while Economy Class passengers are allowed 30 kilogrammes (from 20). Royal Orchid Plus members are also entitled additional baggage allowance based on their respective member status. Through this increased service offering, THAI aims to generate greater passenger satisfaction in choosing to travel on Thai Airways International. he Royal Orchid Plus quarterly print newsletters and envelopes now use 100% “eco-fibre” paper that is produced entirely from recycled paper. The resulting recycled fibre produces paper that is similar to the quality of paper using virgin fibre, at a much lower cost to the environment. By retaining the trees traditionally used for producing paper, less carbon is released into the atmosphere. hai Airways International recently joined forces with Maejo University and Chiang Mai Zoo to organise the event “Thai Orchids Conservation”, in celebration of the birthday anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit on 12 August 2014. This activity is in line with THAI’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policy to promote environmental preservation. At the special event, Boeing 787 Dream Flyer, Maejo University teachers and students, Chiang Mai Zoo staff, volunteers, and THAI staff came together to plant more than 2,000 Thai orchids in the grounds of the zoo.

THAI Organises Math and Science Camps
T
hai Airways International and the Institute for the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology (IPST) recently organised science and math camps in Bangkok and Chiang Mai for 200 primary school students and children of THAI staff members. These camps were set up to encourage youth to become experts in the fields of math and science through various interesting activities. The participants also met with and exchanged ideas with a group of academics and Thai students who competed in the International Mathematics and Science Olympiad.

This month Thai Airways brings you a great selection of the latest movies to choose from including Clint Eastwood’s latest directorial foray Jersey Boys, which brings the award-winning musical stage show to the big screen. Meanwhile Dwayne Johnson stars in the high-adrenalin action story of mythical legend Hercules. Scarlett Johansson stars in Luc Besson’s sci-fi action thriller Lucy, as a woman who gains psychokinetic abilities and runs amok with these new found powers. Hilarious comedy Let’s Be Cops has buddies Ryan and Justin taking dressing up a bit too far when a harmless prank pretending to be policemen leads them to being a target of the Russian mafia. This month’s Marvel Comics adventure has five of the most unlikely characters ever, reluctantly rising to the challenge of saving the universe in Guardians of the Galaxy, whilst action thriller Into the Storm sees Mother Nature doing its utmost to destroy the small town of Silverton.

Just what is there to love about cats? They’re affectionate, gentle and – well, most of the time – they’re downright adorable. While Western cat lovers coo over their Persians and Ragdolls, Thais have several homegrown breeds to be proud of. Siamese cats such as the Wichienmaad, Kao Taem, Kao Manee, Kao Plawd, Ninrat, Dum Plawd and Sri Sawaad all have unique characteristics that make them stand out from the crowd. Pictured here is a cat from the Wichienmaad breed, with its distinctive blue eyes, ivory coloured fur and dark brown patches on its paws, ears, face and tail.
