Admire the intricate pieces of textiles produced by members of the SUPPORT Foundation under Her Majesty the Queen’s Royal Patronage at the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles.

Home to a trove of priceless pieces of work, the museum also boasts a display of the first national costumes created by Her Majesty and 30 exquisite dresses from Her Majesty’s personal collection. The museum houses four galleries, each one taking visitors through a brief history of Thai textiles through exhibits, photographs, film and multimedia presentations.

Artistic dialogue

Legendary additions

The empire is striking back this month at Legoland Malaysia, which opened a LEGO Star Wars Miniland Model Display in time for the park’s second anniversary.

Activities based on a Star Wars theme will also be held this month and children who dress up as any of the characters will get free entry. and breezy temperate central highlands of Vietnam, no trip to Dalat is complete without a visit to the market. Situated right in the centre of town, hundreds of topsy-turvy stalls overflow with fresh fruit and vegetables in the morning, then with essential nonperishable goods such as wind-up windmills, hooting plastic birds and T-shirts in the afternoons and evenings. Spot old ladies with yoke baskets of carrots and turnips; tough knife-wielding, cigarette-smoking butchers; elegant coffee-servers wending through sipping throngs; and bored-looking kids selling shopping bags. All are guaranteed to be wearing either a traditional non la conical hat or a motorcycle helmet, even if they are not riding.

Ride a wild swan.

At the weekend, every local family that can afford it takes the children, granny and at least one fit person out onto Xuan Huong Lake in a pedal-powered boat decorated to look like a massive swan. They cost about US$3 for an hour’s pedalling and let you explore the man-made lake named after 18th-century poet Ho Xuan Huong. There isn’t that much to see on the lake itself, but you do get a great view of the surrounding f lower gardens and a different view of town. The main reason for all that pedalling is more likely to raise an appetite for a fantastic lakeside restaurant meal. ďƒš

A CULINARY STAR

There’s

a new chef in town and he is working his culinary magic among the stars at Red Sky and Fifty Five at the Centara Grand & Bangkok Convention Centre at CentralWorld.

Manning the stoves in the two signature restaurants of Bangkok’s only fully integrated fivestar hotel, convention centre and lifestyle complex is a Frenchman. And Hugo Coudurier is no stranger to working with the stars. After culinary school in Dijon, he worked alongside Jean-Jacques Noguier at the Michelin-starred La Ferme De L’Hospital in Bossey. foreign tourists don’t go?

No better place to get your selfie than in front of the imposing Elephant Falls, about an hour to the southwest of Dalat. Hundreds of Vietnamese tourists arrive by bus every week, but relatively few foreigners. These highly photogenic tree-framed falls take their name not from their size (they are only 30 metres high), but from the rocks around the base that supposedly look like small elephants.

Local lore tells of deep, dark and spooky caves behind the mist thrown up by the falling water. The caves are reputed to contain the everlasting song of a young woman whose lover died in battle. Or maybe it’s just the sound of the wind – you tell us…

Stroll the French Quarter. Though not so much stroll as rubberneck. The Quarter is more of a road: Tran Hung Dao Road to be precise, easily identifiable from the tour buses stopped along it. This ridge-contouring avenue was the prime spot for wealthy expat French folk to build their extensive and lavish high-summer getaways in the 1920s and ’30s.

The height of the ridge enabled the Art Deco- and faux alpine-style mansions to catch cooling hill breezes as the inhabitants quaffed Pernod and jitterbugged the nights away. Today, most are subject to preservation orders, and are beautifully kept as they were just months after they were built. Most are used as holiday rentals by Vietnam’s business elite and as backdrops for tourist photographs, although virtually all are no-entry zones for casual visitors.

Dalat can be reached by bus from Ho Chi Minh in about 7 hours.

Play golf. Dalat boasts one of the oldest golf courses in Asia, at the nine-hole Dalat Palace Golf Club (dalatpalacegolf.vn) just up the road from the town centre. Reportedly founded in 1922, the golf club has seen emperors, consulgenerals, Communist cadres and even the occasional rabbit hunter walk its greens. Although abandoned after World War II, it was rehabilitated in the 1960s

by Dao Huy Hach, a local doctor who liked to swing a club when he was not curing patients. The course is not world-class, but its proximity to town and its delightful old-world clubhouse complete with between-the-wars memorabilia make it worth a look. Or even a drive or two if you are up to it. For serious golfers, the Asian pro-rated Dàlat at 1200 (dalat1200.com) course is about 45 minutes out of town and offers professional-level golf amidst the scent of fragrant pines.

green vision With a string of community projects under her belt, environmental campaigner Oraya Sutabutr hopes to shine the light on the importance of conservation

You have been involved in several community projects to improve Bangkok’s way of life – reducing noise pollution, improving the quality of sidewalks, and creating more public parks for humans as well as dogs. Now you’re involved with BIG Trees Project, a non-profit organisation set up to care for Thailand’s oldest trees. What fuels you to work on such projects?

I reached a point in my life where I wanted to dedicate my time and efforts to promoting public good, particularly for the future of two things I care about most: children (my nieces and nephews) and the environment. I decided to join Quiet Bangkok (quietbangkok.org) and the BIG Trees Project (facebook.com/ BIGTreesProject) simply because pollution of all kinds is one of Bangkok’s most serious problems.

How did BIG Trees start?

The group was formed four years ago, after a bunch of like-minded friends living or working near Sukhumvit

heard that several big old trees in the area would be felled to make way for new construction projects. We felt that Bangkok was losing its green spaces at an alarming rate, and we started the group to try and improve the environment in any way we could.

Today we have more than 72,000 Facebook members, with an active core of 20 people.

How do your travels influence you as an environmental campaigner?

I enjoy learning about how different cities work. On my most recent trip to Tokyo, I discovered that even cemeteries can be excellent public parks when well maintained. Any city with a good walking map and routes for tourists is serious about their urban environment and town planning. In that aspect, Bangkok has a lot of potential.

What is your favourite country and why?

France, especially Paris, for its elegance, romantic elements, sidewalks, great metro system, and its “Vélib’” (public bicycle rental) service.

Overall, it’s such a beautiful and well-planned city. I also love Turkey for its culture, architecture and food. In both Paris and Istanbul, you can walk a lot and see so many things without getting stuck in traffic, getting run over by motorcycles on the sidewalks, or relying on tour guides.

What does the Bangkok of your dreams look like?

Full of greenery, public parks, wide and wheelchair-friendly sidewalks, free of motorcycles and street vendors, lined with big trees and less noise. I believe the private sector can play a much bigger role in improving the city’s environment. For instance, a pocket garden with a few big trees in front of every mall or condo would be an excellent CSR (corporate social responsibility) activity!

Then came an astounding foodie revolution that put the city on the cosmopolitan cuisine map, and since all good eats need a beverage too, the coffee scene followed right along. While Bangkok may not be Seattle, Vienna or Rome, today it boasts some fantastic cafÊs serving up some mighty potent brew. Here’s a look at some of the major players.

Casa Lapin: On a trip to Chiang Mai after leaving his Bangkok design job, Surapan Tanta discovered good coffee and ended up staying there for a year and a half, studying all about coffee making and production. He started a small stall outside noted Chiang Mai café Impresso, where he set up his coffee maker and sold cups during the morning rush hour before Impresso’s doors opened each day.

Several years later, Casa Lapin now has three stylish and inviting cafés in Bangkok (Sukhumvit 49, Ari and Sukhumvit 26), with plans for an outlet in Hualamphong on the horizon. Everything from the requisite lattes (complete with foam art) to espresso to pourovers are available here. Tanta says he is in the coffee business just to get people to know and appreciate coffee more. Latte art is catching on in cafés around Bangkok

Run by the amiable Bret Asavaroengchai, his Venezuelan wife Lucia Aguilar, and her sister Marian, this inviting niche in Phrom Phong is a great source of coffee information. The sisters come from a coffee-growing family, and the trio place great importance on paying dues to the farmers that produce the coffee. Ceresia sources its beans from single-origin farms and cooperatives around the world and gives meticulous attention to how the beans are grown and processed, stocking seasonal blends from countries such as Kenya, Ethiopia Columbia and El Salvador.

Coffee is roasted daily in small batches to maintain its original flavour, and the owners are more than happy to make suggestions and describe the entire coffee making process from farm to espresso maker to your cup.

Pacamara Owner Chartree Treelertkul named this intimate café after the El Salvadorean pacamara arabica coffee bean, known for being a big bean with great flavour, as he wanted his café to be known as a place with big and flavourful taste. Like many of the Bangkok roasters, Treelertkul did some training in Chiang Mai, opening a successful café there that featured Chiang Mai’s first high-end espresso machine. The Bangkok branch of Pacamara opened in 2013.

Plenty of single-origin beans from around the world are here, and 70% of Pacamara’s coffee is Thai, supporting local growers. At the epicentre of the Bangkok coffee renaissance is Roots. What started as the production kitchen for the folks over at Roast (a popular brunch spot), has evolved into a coffee workshop (from home brewing and tasting to latte art) and barista training space, along with being a fine coffee roaster.

While weekdays are for coffee education only, weekends see the quaint café open up to the public, where co-founder and master roaster Korn Sanguankeaw chats with customers, invites them to choose their coffee origin and brewing method (pour over, French press or espresso), and happily shares his coffee obsessions and his faith in the future of Thai coffee.

You’ve got to be impressed when the first thing you see walking into a café is the owner bent over a couple of ceramic drip filters, fastidiously pouring perfectly heated water over freshly roasted beans. Photographer friends Piyachat Trithaworn (better known as “Pi”) and Natthiti Ampriwan (“A”) are the driving forces behind this charming café, perfectly situated in the Bangkok Art & Culture Centre – the ideal hangout for artsy types.

Prepare to queue here, as it is always busy and even more so because good coffee takes time to pour. Everything here is about quality, from the hand grinding and roasting of the fair-trade beans to the precision water heating and hand pouring. They say that art and coffee go together, and this is certainly true at Goja Gallery Café, the newest of Bangkok’s café haunts. Run by Nongnud Praphai and her Japanese partner, Goja started as an art gallery where the owners and their artist friends sat around drinking coffee and wanting a space where people and art could connect.

What resulted was an unpretentious gallery that happens to serve great coffee.

Nongnud is a self-taught barista, picking up a lot of ideas from her boyfriend, who has imported Tokyo’s mania for slow-drip coffee to this minimalist space in Phra Khanong.

Most of the coffee beans here are Thai, and the owners are focused on supporting the local coffee culture.

Affectionate and alive, the city is India’s financial capital and certainly captures many hearts.

Art beat

The Art Loft (theartloft.co.in) at Bandra is a distinctive cultural space where you can explore India’s contemporary art scene. The art venue also has a cosy café, Kombava, which caters to the growing desire for healthy meals. For international contemporary art, head to Horniman Circle’s Galerie Isa (galerieisa.com), which was founded

by Ashwin Thadani in 2011. The chief objective of this gallery is to encourage cutting-edge and divergent art from around the world.

Started off as a studio for artists, The LOFT at Lower Parel (theloft. in), located in the Mathuradas Mills Compound, is an ever-morphing project space that you must visit for acquiring distinctive artworks or availing advisory services on contemporary Indian art. The gallery encourages creative interaction, national and international residencies and curatorial projects.

Dining

Mumbai’s neighbourhoods bustle with interesting eateries. Nido (facebook.com/nidomumbai) in Bandra has a menu that complements the gorgeous European-style décor.

Chef Vicky Ratnani cooks up a visually appealing meal with the finest ingredients and enjoyable flavours. Offering spacious seating, Nido has become one of the city’s hottest dining spots.

Creating a dynamic experience from its entrance, Escobar (escobar. in) houses the longest bar in the country at 77 feet (about 24 metres).

Easy conversation and flowing drinks at the bar can be carried over to the alfresco dining area for a feast of contemporary Mediterranean cuisine.

Embellished doors, brocade chairs, chandeliers and walls peppered with vintage photographs at Pali Bhavan (facebook.com/ palibhavan) add to the wonderful experience here. The restaurant is a must-visit for an upgraded version of Indian street food.

Inspired by iconic writer and poet Rudyard Kipling, The Sahib Room & Kipling Bar at Palladium Hotel (palladiumhotel.in) boasts food with quintessential Indian flavours.

The Sahib Room serves up authentic and rich Indian cuisine, and the Kipling Bar has skilful mixologists showcasing the craft of blending classic libations with Indian spices.

Also at the Palladium is superlative Asian restaurant Mekong. The chefs will take you on a culinary voyage through the areas of Yunnan and Sichuan in China, as well as Thailand and Vietnam. For people looking for intimate celebrations with friends, family or colleagues, there are three different private dining rooms to choose from.

Café Britannia (Tel: +91 22 2261 5264) in Horniman Circle is a quaint restaurant serving comforting Parsi and Iranian dishes. Its 91-year-old owner Boman Kohinoor is on his feet every single day, taking orders and chatting up customers with a pure passion for what he does. He walks from table to table to share letters he has received on behalf of the Queen of England and newspaper cuttings that feature the restaurant that is as old as its owner. Berry pulao, a fragrant rice dish cooked with berries that are imported from Iran, is Café Britannia’s signature dish and is hugely popular with its regulars. 

Where to dine One can have an undisturbed and stress-free time at Café Britannia, a lovely Irani café in the heart of town. Suzette (suzette.in) at Nariman Point is wonderful for crepes, while Kombava (Tel: +91 22 6999 6663) in Bandra serves very good coffee and health food. A great way to explore the city and some delectable eats is to walk from Flora Fountain through Fort and Ballard Estate, and ending in Colaba.

Where to shop Besides Bungalow 8 (bungaloweight.com), there are some lovely little stores in Mumbai. Look for clothes by Pia Pauro, among my favourite Indian designers, at Palladium Mall. Also check out the thrift stores at Bandra and Colaba.

Where to stay The Taj Mahal hotel (tajhotels.com) at Colaba is beautiful and a nostalgic space. I also like The Oberoi (oberoihotels.com) at Marine Drive for its beautiful sea views.

Where to eat Among the restaurants in Mumbai, I like Indigo Deli (indigodeli.com) – it has a very casual, laidback ambience and serves good food. I like their artisanal pizzas. For fine dining, Hakkasan (hakkasan. com) tops my list. For healthy food, there is the chic Yoga House (yogahouse.in) in Bandra. During your stay, try and eat at one of the seafood places – don’t miss eating fish, lobster and crab. I go to Gajalee (gajalee.com), where my favourite is tandoor crab with a chilled beer.

Where to shop There are several interesting shopping destinations in Bandra, like Anokhi (anokhi.com) for ethnic clothes, and little boutiques you’ll stumble upon around the corner. For designer wear, head to Palladium Mall, which houses some of the best haute couture brands available in India.

For beautiful shoes there is the Christian Louboutin store in Horniman Circle. Just visiting the shop is a treat, as it’s embellished with Indian touches.

Where to stay The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai – it is a beautiful and atmospheric property with some interesting history behind it. The Bandra Kurla Complex also has some interesting stay options, among them Sofitel Mumbai BKC (sofitel.com). It’s a hotel by the eponymous French chain and is extravagant in its design. It also has a wonderful spa.

Enchanted Valley Against a fantastical backdrop, a photographer shoots intimate portraits of a community at play in their magical land / words & photos Hans Kristian Riise

The coastal landscape on Norway’s west coast is majestic and definitely impressive.

A unique place where salt water meets steep mountains to create great drama and variation – a perfect place for hiking and exploring. For this series of photos, I sometimes photographed people who were born here and belong in this landscape – like the old man working in a large apple tree, or the four friends posing for my camera after an evening swim. But just as often I photographed outsiders – drifters passing through – looking for a temporary paradise, a place to lay in the grass and worry about nothing. Visiting for the first time last summer, I found what I consider to be a photographer’s paradise. A place where the view is inspiring and the people – whether locals or visitors – have time to pose for a photographer working with a slow 4X5 large-format camera.

Thailand’s contribution to the 14th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice explores the contemporary resonances of tradition

I

f the world isn’t yet entirely weary of so-called “starchitecture”, we must be at least be jaded by its function in the contemporary world: to solicit international attention to cities that require cultural and economic regeneration. At the time of writing, the media was reporting that Zaha Hadid had just been commissioned to design a new structure for downtown Phnom Penh in Cambodia. The particular telegenic qualities of the architecture of Hadid, Frank Gehry et al lend themselves, as American art critic Hal Foster has pointed out, to spectacular dissemination throughout the world’s media, and its subsequent consumption by the public typically

sidesteps fundamental questions of the very experience of architecture.

This may have been a tacit assumption of the 14th International Architecture Exhibition – on until 23 November – which is part of this year’s Venice Biennale. Curator Rem Koolhaas chose the overarching theme of “Fundamentals” for this showcase, which he succinctly describes as “a biennale about architecture, not architects”.

Thailand is one of the 65 countries who are participating. The Thai Ministry of Culture selected Bunnag Architects through the Association of Siamese Architects. Led by Lek Mathar Bunnag, their installation is in the famous Pavilion at the Arsenale

and takes “Spirituality – freedom and creativity” as their mantle.

Here we can acknowledge the intangible, as well as more practical understandings, as a fundamental of the built environment. Lek aimed for a meditative experience in search of a new architectural language and subtitled their contribution “a serene world of silhouettes and shadows of lines, surfaces and forms”.

The Thai architects initially conceptualised their approach as “unmistakably Thai”. Koolhaas was interested in how various countries have moved away from a distinct national architecture to a more international sensibility in our current era. And he wanted hidden histories to be revealed in his selection of architects. In this respect, Bunnag Architects’ concept is not as misleading as it might seem: Thailand is a traditionally syncretic culture, and its architectural history has moved from Hindu and Khmer influences from the major Sukhothai and Ayutthaya periods through to the adaptation of many foreign influences in the 20th century. This is the essence of “unmistakably Thai”. Koolhaas’ curatorial statement also rightly points out that cultural memory is being flattened in the age of Google, and to understand the present in order to make a productive claim on the future, we need to study histories.

The premises of Bunnag Architects in Bangkok is run as a studio rather than as a corporate enterprise, and they maintain a staff of 25 to 30 committed workers.

designed in Lek’s signature, though evolving, style: soft, flowing lines and large, open expanses of meditative space. In recent years, the studio has worked mostly abroad with projects in India, Malaysia and Indonesia.

One of their local masterpieces is The Barai Spa at Hua Hin in southern Thailand. Lek’s designs encompass all the details, including ornaments and, therefore, avows an integrated architectural experience that follows on from the traditions of Art Nouveau, the late 19th-century design movement in Europe that sought to blend an Eastern sensibility with Western functionalism.

Bunnag Architects’ pavilion in Venice steadfastly conjoins a “who we are” understanding with a “where we are” aesthetic as the juggernaut of globalisation continues to wreak havoc on the very idea of distinct identities in the contemporary world.

Rounded forms, elongated pillars, and pilasters and triangulated niches are bathed in a dark light, recalling the spaces of traditional temples that encouraged quiet, reverential

behaviour rather than reflecting our bodies as powerful entities. Lek speaks of a “cosmic force” in Asian architecture and studies the old ruins of Khmer and Thai architecture – which can be found in the northeast part of Thailand – for their dynamic qualities or the sense that the forms are “breathing”. He abstracts these studies, mapping an essential dynamism, and applies his insights to contemporary structures. Here we can acknowledge that the sense of a “cosmic force” knows no geographical boundaries, melds the past with the present and, most profoundly, points to a possible future. Lek reminds us that spiritual awareness is not the same as an adherence to religious beliefs.

However, for all this talk of the past, Bunnag Architects ultimately aims to transcend the influences of history. Lek says that one should always aim to be one’s own master and never a slave to what went before.

And anyhow, architecture, like all the arts, is about moving forward, forever developing new forms of expression.

With the context of the Venice Biennale, Thailand has to ask itself where it stands among international architectural practices. The desire to preserve heritage is pervasive among artists and designers in Thailand.

Bunnag Architects importantly recognises that an engagement with history is not the same as being defined by it, and the achievements of the past find important significance in the present. Indeed, as Koolhaas has written for this showcase: “… the influence of wars, diverse political regimes, different states of development, national and international architectural movements, individual talents, friendships, random personal trajectories and technological developments, architectures that were once specific and local have become interchangeable and global.”

In this respect, Thailand can gladly see itself as part of the global discourse and respond accordingly.

Top Must-Sees Besides the Thailand Pavilion, here are our picks to check out at the 14th International Architecture Exhibition.

MONDITALIA Curated by Rem Koolhaas (above, in front of the “Monditalia” entrance), this edition of the Architecture Exhibition includes activities and displays from other Biennale sectors such as dance, music, theatre and cinema. There’s no better example than this section, which combines architecture with snapshots of Italian culture, through 41 projects that use film, photography and archival material to explore different geographical regions.

Corderie dell’Arsenale, Arsenale, Campo della Tana

GLASS TEA HOUSE MONDRIAN Japanese artist and photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto’s peaceful Glass Tea House on the island of St Giorgio Maggiore is a haven of tranquility that references the Japanese tea ceremony. The space is complemented by the artist’s retrospective of his architectural photography.

Royal Initiatives to Save the Environment for Sustainable Development

rowing environmental concerns have encouraged environmental and natural resource conservation everywhere. In many areas, natural disasters have caused loss of life and property damage before people became aware of environmental impacts. Conservation efforts have led to severe conflicts in several areas as well.

In Thailand, no serious conflicts have existed in conservation work, initiated and developed by Their Majesties the King and Queen to alleviate environmental problems. With their broad vision, Their Majesties have saved the environment from massive destruction and their efforts benefit the livelihoods of people in various areas around the country.

During their visits with villagers in rural remote areas, Their Majesties came up with many royally initiated projects for environmental protection and employment generation.

The projects are diverse, ranging from soil rehabilitation and watershed conservation to reforestation and wildlife protection. They have been carried out in accordance with geographical and social conditions, as well as in response to the real needs of local people.

Sharing His Majesty the King’s concern over the destruction of the natural environment, Her Majesty the Queen has lent support to various forest preservation and

reforestation projects, such as Pa Rak Nam (Forests Love Water) and Ban Lek Nai Pa Yai (Small Houses in the Big Forest). These projects also help preserve wild animals and plants, especially those in danger of extinction, based on the idea to enable humans and forests to live together without destruction. Other projects include, for example, wildlife and aqua resource protection and marine model farms.

Royally initiated projects mainly involve the efficient use of natural resources in terms of conservation. They also encourage local people to spend time in a fruitful way in order to earn more income, improve their living condition and pass on national heritage to future generations.

Their Majesties’ dedication for the happiness of the people is evident and has gained international recognition.

International organisations have presented Their Majesties many awards and medals, including the outstanding “Gold Medal of Distinction” from the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP).

The UNEP Medal was presented to Their Majesties the King and Queen in 1992 in recognition of their efforts and hard work for environmental and natural resource conservation to improve the quality of life of the rural Thai people.

Customs Laws Alcoholic Beverages and Cigarettes Alcoholic beverages and cigarettes are controlled items. A passenger is allowed to bring 1 litre of alcoholic beverages and 200 cigarettes into Thailand free of duty. The exceeding amount will be prosecuted and confiscated.

Carry-On Baggage

Passengers may carry one item of hand baggage to place in a closed overhead bin or under the seat in front of them. The overall dimensions of such baggage should not exceed 115cm (45 inches) or 58 X 34 X 23cm. Its overall weight should not exceed 7kg.

All drinks are served free of charge. Only alcoholic drinks served by our cabin attendants may be consumed.

It is recommended that you drink nonalcoholic drinks as flying can cause dehydration, but we are happy to serve alcoholic drinks to passengers aged 18 years and over. Cabin attendants may decline to serve alcohol to passengers who appear to be intoxicated. This regulation has been implemented for passenger safety, in accordance with THAI’s air traffic policy and procedures.

Special Meals

Vegetarian, low-fat, infant, children, kosher and Muslim meals are available on board by special request. Requests for special meals must be made when making your reservation at least 48 hours in advance.

Speciality Items

A wide range of items is available on Thai Airways International flights for passengers with special requests, including toys and bibs. Ask one of our cabin crew should you require one of the above, or need any assistance.

Communication

Some of our aircraft are equipped with cordless telephones and facsimile machines. The charge for their use is US$8 per minute.

Any person who brings or takes an aggregate amount of foreign currency exceeding US$20,000 or its equivalent out of or into the Kingdom of Thailand shall declare such amount of foreign currency to a customs officer.

Failure to declare upon bringing foreign currency that exceeds the amount restricted by law or its equivalent out of or into the Kingdom of Thailand or making any false declaration to a customs officer is breaking customs laws. If you have any enquiries, please consult a customs officer.

For your safety Please study the safety card in your front seat pocket and locate the closest emergency exits near you. Be sure to keep your seat belt fastened during takeoff and landing, and at all times while seated. For safety reasons, passengers are asked to refrain from sleeping on the aircraft floor and unnecessary walking during the flight. Sleeping passengers may be injured during unexpected turbulence unless firmly restrained by their seat belt. After landing, please remain in your seat with your seat belt fastened until the aircraft has come to a complete stop and the “fasten seat belt” sign has been switched off.

Electronic devices

1. Prohibited devices on board at all times for your safety – portable electronic devices such as radio transmitters, walkie-talkies, portable radio-controlled toys, radios, television receivers, citizen band radios, pagers, electronic toys and wireless devices (mouse, bluetooth, etc) – must be switched off once the aircraft doors have closed and shall not be used on board during the entire flight.

2. For safety reasons during takeoff and landing, all mobile phones and acceptable electronic devices – including portable video equipment, laptops or portable PCs without printers, cassettes/CD/DVD/ mini disc/MP3 players (used with headphones only), electronic games,

electronic calculators, electronic shavers and tablets – must be turned off or switched to flight mode and are not allowed to be used until the fasten seat belt sign has been turned off.

However, use of any portable device suspected of interfering with flight operation shall be prohibited.

3. Acceptable devices on board for entire flight: hearing aids, heart pacemakers, electronic watches and authorised inflight equipment are allowed during the flight.

Beverages on board

Alcoholic drinks will not be served to passengers aged under 18 years. Cabin attendants reserve the right to decline serving alcohol to passengers who appear intoxicated. Consumption of personal alcoholic drinks is prohibited on board at any time.

Smoking

Smoking is not permitted by law on all THAI flights.

The regulations have been implemented for passenger safety, in accordance with THAI’s air traffic policy and procedures. THAI’s flight attendants follow specific measures that strictly comply with safety regulations set by the civil aviation board to secure the safety of aircraft, passengers and airline property.

Gentle Inflight Exercises เทคนิคบริหารร่างกายเมือ่ อยูบ่ นเครือ่ งบิน There are some gentle exercises you can do that will improve your comfort level during and after a flight. Most important is that passengers should perform leg exercises and simple arm movements, especially during long flights. We recommend you do these exercises three or four times every hour. None of them should be performed if they cause pain.

hai Airways International recently held several events to welcome the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, under the concept of “The New Lifestyle Above the Earth”. The events were chaired by Mr Areepong Bhoocha-oom, Vice Chairman of the THAI Board of Directors and ACM Siwakiat Jayema, Acting President of THAI. The welcome ceremony was held at THAI’s Hangar, Technical Department, Suvarnabhumi Airport, and in attendance were members of the THAI Board of Directors, the THAI management team, customers, media and honoured guests. At the events, guests were able to visit a 787 Dreamliner exhibition and aircraft tour.

THAI’s B787-8 aircraft is equipped with the nextgeneration Rolls-Royce Trent 1000-AE engines. The culmination of advanced aerodynamics and lightweight structures contribute to 20 per cent reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Another interesting feature is that the aircraft’s wide windows can be adjusted to the intensity of light.

THAI received its first Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner on 18 July 2014, and the second is to be delivered sometime this month. THAI expects delivery of its third 787-8 in October and the fourth in December. The remaining two 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft are expected to be delivered in the middle of 2015.

THAI’s first 787-8 aircraft operated flights from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. With the delivery of the second 787-8 aircraft, THAI will operate to and from Bangkok to Perth, Australia and Haneda, Japan.

THAI Smile Launches Flights from Don Mueang International Airport

HAI Smile Airways held a ceremony to celebrate the launch of THAI Smile Airways services from Don Mueang International Airport.

Flying Officer Suraphon Israngura, THAI Acting Executive Vice President of Commercial, presided as chairman of the ceremony, together with Second Lieutenant Anussorn Naksrichum, THAI Acting Executive Vice President of Aviation Business Unit, and Mr Woranate Laprabang, Acting CEO of THAI Smile Airways Company Limited. THAI management, media and guests of honour also attended the ceremony, which was held in the Passenger Departure Hall at Terminal 1, Don Mueang International Airport.

THAI Smile Airways will provide services at Don Mueang Airport as an additional choice for passengers travelling on domestic routes to the following three destinations: Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen and Phuket. THAI Announces Shark Fin-Free Cargo Policy

hai Airways International announced that the carrier has implemented strict Cargo policy on the shipment prohibition of shark fin on THAI Cargo, effective from 15 July 2014.

Mr Poonsak Chumchuay, Managing Director of Cargo and Commercial Mail Department, said that since July 2014, the company has communicated and implemented an official policy that prohibits the shipment of shark’s fin on board THAI Cargo. The internal announcement was sent to all THAI operating stations to comply with the recent policy.

“As part of the world community sharing in the great concern for the protection of endangered species and the environment, Thai Airways International has implemented its own official policy to place an embargo on the shipping of shark fin products on THAI.” For over a year prior to issuing this official policy, THAI Cargo has avoided the shipping of shark’s fin on board THAI aircraft, as shown in THAI Cargo records.

hai Airways International is organising the biggest promotion of the year. Called “Luck is in the Air”, THAI customers will have the chance to try their luck every week to win free Royal Silk Class tickets, with a total value of more than eight million baht.

The “Luck is in the Air” campaign is THAI’s way of giving back to valued customers and to support the country’s policy to boost tourism and the economy.

To participate in the “Luck is in the Air” lucky draw, customers need only to purchase a round-trip domestic or round-trip international ticket during the campaign period from 18 August to 30 October 2014, for flights operated

by THAI or THAI Smile Airways. They must fly on these tickets from 18 August to 31 December 2014. Customers can send their 13-digit ticket number (217-xxxxxxxxxx) by SMS to 4811130 (each SMS costs three baht) for a chance to win prizes as follows. Only tickets issued from Thailand during the campaign period are eligible.

First Lucky Draw – 40 pairs of THAI Royal Silk Class air tickets will be given away. For 10 weeks, THAI will conduct weekly drawings at THAI’s head office on Vibhavadi-Rangsit Road, giving away four pairs of tickets each week, with the first weekly lucky draw beginning on 22 August until the final lucky draw on 24 October 2014.

Winners’ names will be announced at www.thaiairways. com and in the Thai Rath newspaper on Friday, the week following the lucky draw. Winners from the First Lucky Draw may also be eligible for the Grand Prize Lucky Draw on 31 October 2014.

Grand Prize Lucky Draw – A single prize worth one million baht will be given away for travel on any THAIoperated flights to any THAI destination, to be used within one year. The Grand Prize will be drawn on 31 October 2014, with the lucky winner’s name to be announced in the Thai Rath newspaper on 7 November 2014.

Jointly organised by Thai Airways International and Suan Dusit Rajabhat University, the students will undergo training for at least 90 days per year and must take theory examinations. A matter of taste Sawasdee shines the light on an oft-overlooked traditional Thai dessert You’ve probably heard of or indulged in the joys of popular dessert mango and sticky rice, but little is ever said about truly authentic Thai sweets such as jah mongkood.

Essentially made from flour mixed with floral-scented water and watermelon seeds, it was originally a dessert enjoyed by Siamese kings and served on auspicious occasions.

Although jah mongkood is very difficult to find these days, it is still enjoyed by modern-day Thais who relish its original flavours and appreciate the complex methods behind making this delightful treat.
