Annual Report of the WORCESTER ART MUSEUM

SEpTEMbER 1, 2012 - AUgUST 31, 2013

Annual Report of the Worcester Art Museum September 2012 – August 2013

Some of the highlights of Fiscal Year 2013 (Sept. 2012 – August 31, 2013) have been the result of long preparation—the extremely successful exhibition Kennedy to Kent State, the Jeppson Idea Lab, and the finalized gift of the Smith collection among them. Others came much earlier than anticipated: the announcement of the plan to integrate the Higgins Armory Collection— an armor collection second only to that of the Metropolitan Museum—into our own collection, which will augment our collection by five percent and strengthen an ongoing transformation of WAM into a family-friendly destination. And finally, an opportunity arose that we hadn’t even thought about at the beginning of the year: the game-changing gift of paolo Veronese’s painting Venus Disarming Cupid from around 1560. The Worcester Art Museum is definitely gaining momentum, as demonstrated by a 70 percent increase of foot traffic to the galleries since 2011, the year before the transition of leadership.

What the friends of WAM may not be aware of is how hard we are working behind the scenes to ensure the institution’s long-term sustainability. The Museum has undergone an all-encompassing restructuring process, a strategic plan is close to being accomplished, and a substantial amount of time and thinking have gone toward diversifying our income streams. I am proud to announce that various museum operations are not only breaking even but generating additional revenue, our gifts and grants are up by 214 percent since FY11, and. thanks to the strong support of local and regional foundations, we were able to raise close to half of the projected $12M needed to help integrate the Higgins collection since March 2013. Join us in celebrating these successes and look forward with us to a successful FY14! Matthias Waschek, Director

In the galleries

The major exhibition which launched the new season at WAM, Kennedy to Kent State: Images of a Generation, was conceived around a collection of American photographs from the 1960s assembled and donated to the Museum in 2011 by Howard g. Davis, III (known to all as David Davis). The exhibition documented a cultural shift from an age of American innocence before the death of president Kennedy through the challenges associated with the Civil Rights Movement, the Vietnam War, and NASA’s mission to the moon. Featuring over 100 images dating from 1958 to 1975, complete with full catalogue, the exhibition included many images which have come to define the era.

Complementing a full schedule of changing exhibitions in the Asian galleries, the American miniatures gallery, the Contemporary gallery, and the prints, Drawings and photographs gallery, the Museum mounted the 10th commissioned Wall at WAM: These Days of Maiuma, by the collaborative husband and wife team of Robert and Shana parkeHarrison. With its iconography of the remains of a grand feast and themes of contemporary wealth, decadence, and disregard for the environment, the inkjet mural is intended to be a visual and conceptual counterpoint to the Worcester Hunt mosaic—once the site of many a feast in 6th-century Antioch, a city known for its lifestyle of sophistication, affluence, and excess.

With the debut of the Jeppson Idea Lab, the Museum creates a public forum for sharing questions and ongoing research about single or small groups of objects from the permanent collection. This innovative and collaborative presentation of Orantes: Ancient Statues from South Italy features three rare greek statues dating to the 3rd century bCE displayed together for the first time after a multi-year conservation, restoration, and technical study campaign. gallery interpretation for the project, which includes video interviews and ipad interactives, represents the work of a team of conservation, curatorial, and audience engagement staff, as well as the participation of Worcester State University computer science students. pictured: School of provence, The Christ of Saint Gregory, 1480-90, painting on panel, Museum purchase, 1938.80

Conservation

The Museum’s conservation department recently completed two major restoration projects: The Christ of Saint Gregory, a late 15th-century gilded panel painting previously attributed to Nicolas Froment (1435-1486), but presently listed as School of provence; and conservation treatment allowed for a complete rediscovery of the Head of St. Joseph by giovanni Lanfranco 6

Enriching the Collection

The Museum’s collection continues to grow in depth and breadth through the generosity of individuals and endowed funds. Among the highlights of the year’s acquisitions was a gift from Hester Diamond of paulo Veronese’s Venus Disarming Cupid (about 1555), this canvas was one of the few works by the famed Renaissance painter formerly in private hands. A Florentine terracotta Kneeling Figure (about 1475) was a gift of Linda and John Nelson. The Scarlet Letter VI (1993), an important example of the collaborative practice of Tim Rollins and K.O.S. (Kids of Survival, a group of South bronx high school students), a gift of Rosalie T. Rose in memory of Sidney Rose. Annette Lemieux’s Moveable Obstacle #2 (1995), featured in her 2010 mid-career survey at WAM, was donated by the artist and her husband Erik Hansen. Ron Rosenstock, the subject of a recent solo exhibition at WAM, Hymn to the Earth, donated five of his photographs. Restricted gifts and endowed funds enabled the Museum to make several notable purchases during the year. Three photographs (from 1988-2002) by Nan goldin, whose intimate images of friends and brutally candid self-portraits have influenced a generation of artists, were acquired through a partial gift from Edward Osowski and additional funds from the Eliza S. paine Fund. The Stoddard Acquisition Fund supported two major acquisitions. L‘élégante aux oiseaux (1890), a pastel by Louis Anquetin, representing an important link between the aesthetic of the pastel and the modernist aesthetics of the monochrome. A Screen for the New Year: Pines and Plum Blossoms (early to mid-17th century) features two enduring New Year’s symbols— evergreen pines emblematic of long life and the white plum blossoms symbolic of new life. The acquisition of a Neolithic Jōmon Vessel (about 3500-2500 bCE), an exquisite example of hand-coiled earthenware vessels which are among the oldest artistic artifacts found in Japan, was made possible by the Alexander H. bullock Fund.

“ I have two motives for giving this painting to Worcester,” said collector Hester Diamond. “First, it is an opportunity to honor my stepdaughter, Rachel Kaminsky, who joined the Museum board in 2012. beyond that, I have always believed that the best public home for a work of art is within an institution where it adds something new to the collection and helps bring in new audiences. Over the years, my collection has evolved, incorporating art from many periods, genres and styles. The Worcester Museum’s willingness to explore new ideas for encouraging audiences of every age to think differently about art reflects the arc of my own collecting.”

Higgins Integration Campaign

With the spring 2013 announcement that the Higgins Armory Collection would be integrated within the legacy art collections at Worcester Art Museum, Higgins and WAM leadership leaped into action to create an integration implementation plan and project budget. From these actions, the evolving Integration plan and the Higgins Integration Campaign were launched. The initial forecasts target a plan with a price-tag of $12 million. The Museum is pleased to report that five local foundations have provided lead “jump-start” grants: the george I. Alden Trust, the Fred Harris Daniels Foundation Inc., The Fletcher Foundation, the george F. and Sybil H. Fuller Foundation, and the Stoddard Charitable Trust, and one generous national private foundation’s challenge grant [The Manton Foundation]. The Museum has already achieved nearly one-half of its $12 Million goal. To date (November 2013), $5.8 Million has been contributed or pledged in support of Higgins Jump-Start Campaign initiatives, and $700,000 in additional grant requests have been submitted and are pending funder decisions. The Knights are arriving!

Audience Engagement

The newly formed Division of Audience Engagement — which includes Visitor Services, Education, Classes, the Library, Marketing, publications and Design — has truly fused during 2013. To better meet the need of our visitors, our goals include weaving together a diversity of artistic practices, educational opportunities, and social experiences with relevance and civicminded activities. Since its creation, the Division has set new standards for daily programs and gallery experiences, classes, and library offerings, all while working to improve the many forms of communication presented to our visitors and online audiences. The Division is looking at how we use design, marketing, and communications to support the vision of a high quality, engaging and fun experience for all visitors, something we believe is not only possible but mandatory. Our hope is that visitors will come and experience the new initiatives and have a more personalized experience at WAM.

Education

The Education Department redefined its focus to more effectively reach families, college students, and diverse audiences. Newly created drop-in gallery programs provided interactive activities for all age groups. participation peaked during the months of July and August (Free Summer), demonstrating our visitors’ desire to interact with the art in new ways. A reinvigorated engagement of the colleges led to a wide range of exciting, interdisciplinary partnerships with Worcester State University, Worcester polytechnic Institute, College of the Holy Cross, Clark University, Assumption College, and Anna Maria College.

For example, WSU students participated in docent training at the Museum to prepare for the fall exhibition [remastered]. This specialized training culminated with an internship in which students wrote exhibition labels, led tours and gallery activities, and developed and installed an interactive art exhibition in the Higgins Education Wing. Working with university students in this way is a new model for future university/museum partnerships in which the Museum serves as a center for ongoing student education and practice. The Education Department also offered a vibrant and diverse lecture program for the focal exhibition, Kennedy to Kent State, including a symposium and a series of oral history videos featuring members of the community, created in collaboration with the Worcester Historical Museum.

Studio Classes

The Worcester Art Museum continues to succeed in offering cutting edge art classes, lectures and thought-provoking programs. There is something for everyone to learn at WAM.

Docents and Tours

group tour attendance for 2013 increased by 1,644 visitors from the previous fiscal year. The greatest growth in attendance was in the Worcester adult population, but it is noteworthy that over 50% were local institutional college members. Docents offer a variety of tour opportunities including school tours, general interest tours, tours of special exhibitions, weekend public tours, specialized tours of the month, tours in collaboration with school partnerships, museum special events and others.

Library

The Museum hosted a conference that explored the future of libraries in the 21st century. One of the ideas that germinated from that conference was the concept of “decentralizing” the Library and moving selected books into the galleries. We are currently experimenting with that idea by bringing some of the Library resources into the [remastered] galleries with a selection of books for adults and children that highlight art, literature, and religion of the period.

Visitors

Numbers are not the sole indicator of an institution’s vibrancy, but they illustrate trends. Foot traffic to the galleries has increased by 70% from FY 2011 to FY 2013. The increase in the digital world is even more impressive – about 100% growth over the past two fiscal years.

Looking Ahead to 2014

FY14 will be under the auspices of the Higgins integration. Only three months after the closing of the Higgins Armory Museum, WAM’s Knights! exhibition will open with fanfare. It will not only allow the Museum to keep a national treasure in Worcester, but also to substantially enhance its impact by connecting a great collection with the current holdings. The Museum’s success will be measurable by our enhanced capacity of broadening the Museum’s reach within the region and of the growing appeal to family audiences. Accessibility will be a top priority – the first step is a universal access ramp at the Salisbury entrance in the summer of 2014. The best is yet to come
