Message from the Director We hear the words “Worcester renaissance” a lot these days as the city’s resurgence attracts attention across the country, including stories on National Public radio’s Morning Edition and channel 5 Boston’s Chronicle. Worcester is earning praise for its cultural and educational density, as well as the outstanding work to redevelop downtown and draw new business to the city. From new housing and hotels to the brand new “Woosox” ballpark in the works, Worcester is transforming at a noticeable pace. We are thankful for the work done by so many who—with foresight, determination, and hard work—make our city a place where people want to visit, work, and live. What does that have to do with WAM? A lot! After all, Worcester is our first name. the growth and development of our city strengthens every organization, and that is absolutely true for the Worcester Art Museum. As the city grows, so does support for the Museum. In turn, our exhibitions, programs, and outreach contribute to the cultural vibrancy that residents want in their city. examples in FY18 ranged from the exhibition Rediscovering an American Community of Color: The Photographs of William Bullard, which connected a local community with their lost history by bringing a forgotten neighborhood back to life, to The Mystery of Worcester’s Leonardo. the latter exhibition launched a multi-venue, international debut of our small panel painting, A Miracle of Saint Donatus, that has been newly reattributed to the renaissance master Leonardo da Vinci. (Worcester joins a very select group of cities that can claim a work by Leonardo.) Last year, we also achieved our mission of “connecting people, communities, and cultures through the experience of art” through a number of community affiliations. After a successful pilot year, we began a five-year partnership with seven Hills Foundation and VsA Massachusetts, making the Museum’s galleries accessible to individuals of all abilities and giving them a beautiful new creative and exhibition space, called the open Door Gallery. A new southeast Asia Artist-in-residence program forged partnerships with the southeast Asian community and facilitated healing and friendship between Worcester and Vietnam. the new central Massachusetts Artist Initiative at WAM and a collaboration with ArtsWorcester means the works of local artists are now shown on a regular basis at the Museum. using our galleries as a context for teaching college-level humanities seminars, the clemente course continued to transform the lives of individuals by removing financial obstacles to success. And, finally, we were proud to partner again with many of Worcester’s 13 colleges, a synergy that both contributes to their academic richness and enhances our scholarship and programming. As an organization whose reputation reaches far beyond our city, we have always enjoyed inspiring new people to visit Worcester. Now these visitors are increasing, coming more often and staying longer. Due in part to growing media coverage of WAM activities and the exciting new Worcester “buzz,” our programs attract an increasing number of visitors from Metro West and beyond. (For some exhibitions, as many as two thirds of our visitors come from outside of Worcester county.) We also see an increase in the number of visitors from throughout New england and New York, as well as visitors from europe and Asia. together we will become stronger, more vibrant, and better able to move forward in the ways many have dreamed possible. the Worcester Art Museum looks forward to its place in the growth of our beautiful, reawakening city. cultural strength and vitality is part of what will make Worcester the “It” city for a long time. Acquisitions Four strategic new acquisitions reflect the Museum’s ongoing focus on growing and diversifying our collections, as well as our commitment to collecting artists of color. An early twentieth-century German painting by Max slevogt brings balance to WAM’s european collection and bridges gaps in the pathway to Modernism. At the same time, contemporary works by Bharti Kher and stan Douglas add to our Asian art and photographic collections. Art purchases such as these are possible because of the generosity and foresight of generations of donors to the Museum’s acquisitions endowment funds. Max slevogt’s painting Selbstbildnis im Garten (A Self-Portrait in the Garden at Godramstein) (1910) (see page 4) is an important contribution to our late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century european collections and connects the monumental portrait, Lady Warwick and Her Son, by John singer sargent with our other holdings of Impressionism. slevogt (1868–1932), one of Germany’s leading Impressionist painters, is often paired with artist Lovis corinth, who is well-represented in the collection with a number of works on paper and two major paintings.

Bharti Kher, Indian, born 1969, A Vegetarian Lion, a Slippery Fish, 2013, acacia, plaster and paint, Museum Purchase through the eliza s. Paine Fund, sarah c. Garver Fund, Harriet B. Bancroft Fund and the Alexander H. Bullock Fund, 2018.36 Image © Bharti Kher, used with permission.

assemblage of 70 small-scale figurines, in various stages of wear and deterioration, on a wooden table. the figurines range in representation from Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist deities and saints to generic figures, such as dancers, children, and a snake charmer. the artwork reflects Kher’s ongoing exploration of how humans imbue objects, icons, and symbols with social meaning. As the first contemporary piece from India in the collection, the work will introduce exciting new dialogue between contemporary art and WAM’s extensive holdings of Asian religious art.

In tandem with the slevogt work, the Museum has acquired the 1918 painting Liebe und Tod (Love and Death), by Austrian artist richard Müller (1874– 1954). With its powerful allegorical narrative—and the armor representing the fallen warrior—the work connects to the Museum’s outstanding Higgins collection of arms and armor, and will support WAM’s ongoing interpretive installations that connect its arms and armor collections to both the wider art historical tradition and to the underlying political and social histories. London-born, New Delhi-based artist Bharti Kher (b. 1969) is known for her sculptures and installation pieces, many of which draw on traditional Indian cultural or ritual elements, and incorporate both human and animal forms. the installation, A Vegetarian Lion, a Slippery Fish, (2013) is an
