Four Year Strong set to put 2020 behind us with a virtual holiday show JASON GREENOUGH
Over the course of the last 12 years, Four Year Strong has gone through hell and high water to end the year with its annual holiday show at the Palladium. Whether it be a blizzard, or an illness in the band, the hometown heroes have always stuck to the idea that the show must go on — and that isn’t changing for lucky No. 13. With it not really being an option to mess with tradition, the quartet is bringing the yearly holiday hoedown to the masses with the virtual “Four Year Strong Holiday Show Stream” on Dec. 19. Although their loyal fans have always convened at year’s end for a night of heavy breakdowns and moshing without the need for anything else, the band is taking the opportunity this year
to add a few creative ingredients to make it an all-around special event. Bringing along Will Putney, the producer of their latest hit record “Brain Pain,” to produce and mix the set (which was recorded in frontman Alan Day’s West Brookfield studio), and their tour photographer, Mike DeMellia, to work the camera, the guys will be peppering in stories, musical performances from some of their friends, and even a few cool surprises to make this year’s offering include a bit more than just music. And while he’s just as bummed about the circumstances as we are, guitarist Dan O’Connor is looking forward to delivering what he and his bandmates have worked hard on to send this dumpster fire of a year off on a fun note. “I’m really stoked on it, and I
think people are really going to like it,” O’Connor tells Worcester Magazine. “I think it properly represents the vibe we wanted to give off for this year’s holiday show, because we know that there are a lot of people just like us who have never missed one of our holiday shows, and it’s a tradition for a lot of people in Massachusetts and New England. There are people that I see every year, and I know their names, and they’re always up at the front row, and we just want to do something for them. But we’ve also had people all over the world who are bummed that they can’t make it to the holiday show, so this is an opportunity to try and spread a little bit of holiday cheer, I guess, around the world to our fans, and we wanted to make it something that hopefully makes everybody smile.”
THANK YOU

While they may not be pumping their brand of heavy holiday cheer from the downstairs stage at the Palladium this year, the band still wanted to involve the Main Street musical cathedral in the festivities. What they came up with, after realizing their original plan to record the show at the Palladium wouldn’t work out as they’d hoped, and a subsequent plan for a GoFundMe met a similar fate after discussing it with the venue, was to donate $1 from every ticket purchased to the venue, as they couldn’t fathom not stepping up and helping out an integral part of the band’s history. “We had talked to the Palladium about it, and they were like ‘we love that you have this idea, but, we’d rather you just try to push the Save The Stages initiative,’” says O’Connor. “When this show came up, and we were originally planning to do it (at the Palladium), and then we didn’t, we thought that whether not we were paying the Palladium to use the venue, we still wanted to give them something from this, because without the Palladium, there’d be no Four Year Strong.” Every month takes a minute, and every minute feels like it
takes a month this year, but when the guys got back together to practice in drummer Jake Massucco’s garage, just as they have for years, it felt like no time had passed. After riding high on the release of “Brain Pain” earlier this year, the guys played the songs for only eight shows before everything shut down, so they’re looking forward to not only playing these songs again with the “new album” feeling still intact, but with the intention of putting 2020 behind them and looking forward to 2021 with a positive outlook on what’s possible, both inside and outside of the band. “All I can say is that 2020 was a year of a lot of despair and sadness, but a lot of people also took time to figure out what was important in their lives, and I’m very stoked to start 2021 with the mindset of what’s important to me, and to live next year making sure that I put those things in the priority spot that they need to be,” says O’ Connor. “I think 2021 is going to be a great year for personal and mental development, and I’m just excited to put this year behind us, and come out swinging with sort of a new outlook on life.”

just community building through a commonly shared research topic. Little said that the original thought was to offer it for no credit and just share ideas, but Huang suggested it be offered for half credit (two credit hours), which for professors meant less grading and greater latitude in teaching. The “Oscar predictably went to the film studies professor, since “most of us did variations of Powerpoint, Little admitted. Kennedy has already applied for the Clark Commons courses running during the intersession term from Jan. 4 to Feb.12. Horror to Hope will also be offered again. In the spirit of the program, she will be going outside her field by taking a class in computer science and animation. Unlike the summer course, which was specifically for incoming freshmen, the intersession classes will be open to all Clark students. Clark Commons is likely a sign of things to come and both Little and Huang hope to expand it in the future, making it a true MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) — changing not only how schools teach but who they teach. Initially, the program was intended to be open to everyone. Little and Huang still hope to follow through on this. “I think pandemics are going to be in the future for humanity so this is about how to mitigate their effects rather than eradicating them altogether, said Huang.

In fact, the discussion was the homework, in a sense. Little acknowledged the course also broached the politicization of the pandemic. “We left it to the students to bring that into the conversation — one thing they wished we had done more was politics, so we will try to bring in a political science professor next time. They had a philosopher in the “COVID posse who did an episode on sorting fact from fiction in times of an epidemic. He said they already have an idea for another Commons course on how to deal with misinformation vehicles. “We have quite a few professors in the political science department, in particular, who deal with that and the students were very interested in how misinformation affects elections. When considering the race aspect, the course touched on how blame for pandemics has always been racialized, discussed the Columbian Exchange in the New World, and the yellow fever outbreak that was blamed on African Americans. A Commons course on the Black Lives Matter movement is also being considered. As far as how the logistics worked, Huang explained that all of the faculty members met many times and worked out what each contribution would be to the running narrative. That avoided the impression of having a bunch of episodes stitched together. “A little constructive competition as she put it, and it was “fun to see everyone’s episodes because it was really

he recent passing of David Prowse, the actor who played Darth Vader in the first three “Star Wars” films, made me remember the one time I met him. I was 10 years old. It was 1979. I was visiting family in New York City. My uncle, realizing that I loved comic books to an insane degree, took me to a new kind of store. It was a comic book shop. Who knew that such delights were even legal? The shop was situated in the Upper East Side. It had the odd luck of being named Super Snipe. They took the name from an obscure 1940s comic book. Of course, when you looked at it, most comics were obscure The shop was really small. You had to wait outside for others to leave. It could only fit 10 customers at a time. When we did get in, I was in some higher plane of existence. A store dedicated to nothing but comic books. It was awesome. It took me a few minutes to focus enough to see comics that I wanted. There was the first issue of the new series of “Man-Thing.” It was about a sentient swamp monster and I had to have it. I clutched it to my chest, afraid that someone would take it from me. Suddenly, the door to the store opened and a giant strode in. It was amazing he could fit in the shop. A much smaller man ran like a terrier behind him and shouted, “David Prowse, Darth Vader himself is here, and he will sign your ‘Star Wars’ comics.” The giant of a man spoke to someone thrusting a comic at him. He had a lilting English accent. I was bewildered, I saw “Star Wars” 10 times, and that was not Darth Vader’s voice. My uncle explained that David Prowse was in the costume and another actor, James Earl Jones, was the voice. I was dubious, but I had to give my uncle the benefit of the doubt. He had, after all, taken me to a comic shop. There was little room to avoid
this huge celebrity. Soon, I was before him. He was six-foot-six. I was four-foot-something. I only came up to his abdomen. He was like a fairy tale creature. In that sweet, tenor voice he said to me, “You want me to sign your comic?” Sure. I thrust in front of him my copy of “Man-Thing” No. 1. He opened it up and began to sign his name. He only made it to the letter “D” before his handler angrily said, “He’s not going to sign that comic. Buy a ‘Star Wars’ comic, he’ll sign that.” David Prowse nodded sadly from way up in the stratosphere. Someone put into my hands a copy of “Star Wars” No. 29. It had a great cover of Darth Vader fighting a cyborg. Mr. Prowse took it and signed the first page. I believe he wrote, “David Prowse is Darth Vader.” He gave it back to me and now I had a comic I really didn’t want, but it was signed by Darth Vader, so that must have been good. After only a few minutes, Darth Vader and his handler had left the building and we all were able to breathe again. I love recalling that moment with David Prowse. This was before celebrities such as he would make a lot of money signing things. All I had to do was buy a forty-cent “Star Wars” comic. Maybe that was the real worth of someone’s signature back then. Signatures are big time collectables. But all they are, is a name. An affirmation of identity. We force the value on it. We make it significant by sheer will.
Over the years, my comic book collection got to be immense. I sold it off a long time ago and I no longer have that signed “Star Wars” comic. But the comic I probably miss more is that “Man-Thing” No. 1 with the letter “D” scrawled on the first page. Somewhere in the world, someone owns that copy of the book and I am sure is annoyed that a crazy kid wrote on the first page, destroying the value. They don’t know who graffitied on their book. Would they be impressed that Darth Vader wrote that letter “D”? Or would they still want it to be pristine and pure? David Macpherson is a poet, humorist and author living in the Worcester area.

LETTER
Putting coal in Pelosi’s stocking Contrary to a previous Janice Harvey article, Nancy Pelosi is the most despicable politician that this country has seen in quite some time. She has put her pettiness and hatred towards the President of the United States ahead of the welfare of the people she is supposed to represent. Pelosi’s recent vile action in holding up a Covid relief package for completely political reasons has caused financial harm to many Americans. Yet, she was fine with showcasing costly ice cream in front of her $25,000 refrigerator.
Previously, she pushed a false impeachment narrative that squandered over $3 million in taxpayer money. It was embarrassing to witness Pelosi’s impropriety in tearing up the State of the Union speech in front of an international audience. Her conniving ways date back to the previous administration when she told the American people that the Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”) “must be passed in order to see what was in it.” It turned out to be a disaster for many small businesses and increased the health care costs for many families. Hopefully, she will be stripped of her Speaker of the House position in the New Year since Americans don’t need such a vindictive person in power. Thomas Corrigan lives in Worcester

thought former Worcester City Councilor and one-time mayor Konstantina Lukes was going to stop lighting political fires in her retirement, they were obviously never really paying attention. Indeed, Lukes’ eyebrow-raising Dec. 4 editorial in the Telegram & Gazette showed her at her political brawler best. The target? Allowing non-U.S. citizens to sit on volunteer city boards. On Nov. 19 she wrote, “the Citizens Advisory Council, by a unanimous vote of the eight members present, made a dangerous and shortsighted change in their own rules by eliminating the requirement that all recommended appointees to boards and commissions be registered voters.” In true Konnie form, she breezes by the sensible rebuttal – that many legal immigrants live here and pay taxes, thus entitling them to be at least a little involved in their community’s civic life – and goes straight for the melodramatic bluster, that “this type of argument is outweighed by the oath that new citizens must take, which includes a promise that they will support and defend the Constitution and the laws of the land, that all allegiance to any foreign sovereignty will be renounced and that the new citizen will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by law.” Then, in a magnificent leap of logic, Lukes uses the platform to rant that, “officials have chosen the easy way out by changing the vocabulary and redefining illegal aliens as immigrants, dreamers and heroes.” All of which is a bit much when weighing whether a legal resident from, let’s say England, should be allowed to serve on the Cemetery Committee. The argument is pure nonsense, but Lukes delivers it with such flair one has to applaud the audacity. Other, more reasonable heads, such as T&G “Point-Counterpoint” contributor Randy Feldman, poke easy holes in Lukes’ argument, writing, “Legal permanent residents (i.e. green card holders) in the U.S. cannot vote and thus are also not registered voters. However they can and do serve in the U.S. military, go to war and risk their lives for our country and our way of life. Military service does not require one to be a U.S. citizen, only a legal permanent resident.”
Lukes’ editorial is, ultimately, an exercise in sheer xenophobia, and yet somehow still less stomach churning than one in The Lowell Sun Dec. 5, “New arrivals, your job is to learn English.” The editorial has a tone that’s condescending in that way that one tries to appear to be offering advice, when really they’re just talking down to people. Never mind that most of us whose ancestors who immigrated here in the 20th century had relatives who never learned English, the Sun editorial seems oblivious to its own privilege. The vast majority of immigrants do work to learn English when they come here, but it’s not a thing that happens overnight, and it can be even slower when you’re toiling under the heavy workload that a lot of those who immigrated out of dire necessity tend to take on just to survive. Condescension, of course, is its own expression of xenophobia, but honestly, both Lukes and the Sun are engaged in regressive arguments that are way behind the current immigration discussion, each editorial telling us more about its authors than it does about the complex lives and roles of immigrants in contemporary Massachusetts.

n Nov. 30, Stephanie Williams became the new chief diversity officer for the Worcester city government, and the third since the position was created about five years ago. The third time could be the charm. The job of the CDO is to help create a diverse and inclusive environment in the city’s municipal workforce — be it through hiring and promotion or ensuring access to training and education. However, there remains some skepticism within Worcester’s Black community. Many are tempering their expectations about whether constraints placed upon the position will allow Williams to effect real change. Williams believes this is far from a “checkmark position,” as she called it, and says she would not have accepted it if she thought that was the case. “I push back,” she said, even if that could make some uncomfortable, that is part and parcel of the discussion in equity, diversity and inclusion. “Comfort is not the goal, and we have to learn how to be comfortable with being uncomfortable.” She says her first priority is to meet as many people as possible to ensure she hears the widest range of voices from the community. “Everybody has a need, has a concern, has a demand, and I want to listen to everyone,” she said. In addition, the goal of the CDO, as Williams sees it, is to look at how the city can recruit and retain a diverse workforce. But some residents cite the constraints placed on prior CDOs. “We had amazing women come through but it didn’t work,” said Harley Jones, a longtime Worcester resident and founder

State University in August. It’s one of many positions in education she’s held over the course of her career in Worcester. BFT, a community group that organized the town hall, is an association of “Black people who live or work in Worcester to come together to establish priorities and improve their quality of life” in the city, said Luster. The group launched in June, meets bi-weekly, and so far members have met with the city manager twice. “It’s hard to be the face of diversity in Worcester when you don’t have the resources you need,” said Sha-Asia Medina, Jones’ daughter and the current director of Our Story Edutainment. While the creation of the position was a positive first step, she said, “you have to revise that position as you learn what folks need.” The most valuable of these revisions is that the CDO is now a cabinet level position that reports to the city manager, rather than HR, and is the head of the newly formed Office of Diversity and Inclusion. “For someone in that position to be successful, they need staff,” said Rob Jones, who was BFT’s representative on the city’s search committee. “It can never be a one-person show. Whatever changes are made to the position’s charter, Frazier believes the CDO cannot be expected to override the City Council and city manager on key issues. The group of Black Lives Matter protesters still facing charges is one example they provided. “Do we need another report card that lies about our progress?” Frazier asked. “This city isn’t safe for any of the people that this diversity officer is supposed to help.” The best way to counter these issues, some argue, is to go straight to the top. “We need to diversify the city government starting from the highest levels,” said Luster, “and the CDO should
on the pulse of the community’s needs. “How do you eat an elephant?” she asked. “One bite at a time.” While she may hold the title of diversity officer, she harbors no illusions that she alone can be a force for change. While the city’s current hiring freeze means she will not have a fully staffed office behind her yet, Williams considers herself far from alone. “I understand the reality that it’s all of our work. From HR, to the city manager to the community. It’s everybody’s work, but any progress, even slow progress, is still progress.” Rob Jones says it is hard to speak for an entire community

oday, hip-hop holds plenty of pop appeal, but in high school, it escaped me. I grew up listening to Elvis Costello, Indigo Girls, and I’ll say it — Jewel. Literally, so much Jewel. (Thanks for that, mom.) Little did I know, one of my Doherty Memorial High School classmates was already forging a path for Worcester to become the epicenter of New England’s hiphop scene. His name is Egbert Pinero. Egbert “Eggy” Pinero moved to Worcester from Puerto Rico at one year old. By 12, he was obsessed with hip-hop, idolizing underground rappers like Cross Movement, the whole Rough Riders crew, and notable boombap artist Nas. Unfamiliar? I was. Boom-bap is a sub-genre featuring a kickdrum downbeat and snare drum upbeat loop. Melodies are rare. Lyrics are superabundant. See: A Tribe Called Quest’s “Scenario.” “When I was 16, I started volunteering at the Worcester Youth Center, teaching kids how to write and record their own music,” Pinero says. By 2006, he had produced an entire series called “Get Off the Block,” before dropping his first solo album, “The Monologue,” that same year. “It was a very amateur album,” he says, “But, I produced everything myself and I even made 90% of the beats.” A display of some of the work in which Egbert “Eggy” Pinero has been involved. Pinero went on to produce music for Grammy-winning soul singer Butch Tavares, who was sampled by Dr. Dre on 50 Cent’s “Get Rich or Die Tryin’.” Pinero performed at the Latin Festival in 2006 and 2007 before turning his full focus to faith-based music. “I used gospel hip-hop as a tool to introduce God to people in the form of rap,” he explains, “I never intended to make a career of it; I’m a father first, and I want

to set an example for my son.” Pinero was captivated by Worcester’s breakdance crew. “Rap battles here felt really polished and I found strength in the
city’s diversity,” he says. Pinero began to take great pride in the city where he grew up and soon, he was producing for local notables such as Leon Legacy and
Danny Fantom. You could find him scouting talent at Electric Haze on Millbury Street. “People just started sending me their stuff for mixing in my home studio,” he recalls, “It’s pretty basic. I only have like $4,000 worth of equipment.” Don’t let the price tag fool you — Pinero has become very selective, only accepting clients by referral. His fans include underground legends such as Ghost of the Machine. His advice to aspiring rappers? “Get your sound right and invest in a proper press kit,” he says, “Albums don’t sell; it’s a single with a viral video that sells.” As for Worcester’s biggest pocket of talent, Pinero finds a lot of wasted potential among gang members. “Their music is really good — really well-produced stuff,” he says, noting that their equipment is often more sophisticated than his own.
“Their 4k video quality actually allows law enforcement to pull off serial numbers from their firearms,” he cautions. “They’re shooting at 60 frames a second; it’s real high-definition stuff,” he says, adding, “I wish they would use the hip-hop scene to become artists instead of using it to start trouble.” Pinero has his own ambitions for a future in public safety, but his heart is in the music. “Most of all, I want to provide the community with access to the hip-hop scene,” he says. If his infectious enthusiasm is any indication of Worcester’s talent, I’ve had Leon Legacy on loop since we spoke. I’m just saying, I haven’t listened to a single as many times as “Rise X Grind” since “Who Will Save Your Soul” in ‘95. Where are you Leon? Please let me peer into your brain.

hef Bill Aldrich and Jeanette Harmsen, co-owners of Theatre Café, 529 Main St., Worcester, have built a strong and loyal customer base in the 10 years they’ve operated the business. This year, the owners planned to open a sister restaurant, Center Stage Bistro on Main Street, across from The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory for the Performing Arts. “We were ready for construction to begin when the pandemic hit and shut down the project,” said Aldrich, who estimates the official opening of the new location is now about a year out. The full-service restaurant with bar will seat 80 when it opens. In the meantime, Aldrich and chef Jason Sheldon, teamed up to create a portion of Center Stage Bistro’s menu for takeout and delivery, working out of Theatre Café’s new expanded kitchen. Sheldon is partner in the bistro. The menus for the café and the bistro are completely different, according to Aldrich, who said introducing bistro options not only gives diners a taste of what’s to come, but also helps build the brand. The “ghost kitchen” intended for delivery and takeout only has taken off, he said.
Christmas dinner orders through Dec. 18. Check details on the bistro’s Facebook page, where you also can find special offers. Pre-COVID-19, the Theatre Café was among the to-go places for ticket holders before shows and performances at The Hanover Theatre and Mechanics Hall. The BYOB café seated 34 and also accommodated guests for special occasions in a tiny room off the kitchen. Aldrich said he and Harmsen have taken a loss in revenue like everyone else in the industry, but they consider themselves fortunate that their takeout and delivery business remains intact, thanks to the support of loyal customers, downtown residents and people who still work in and around the city. Theatre Café has history, he said, and the plan right now is to keep the café open when Center Stage Bistro is launched. “Of course, no one really knows what the future holds,” Aldrich added. “We just have to stay positive.”

few thoughts while wondering when the Christmas 2020 spirit will take hold:
•A couple of weeks ago I wrote about the New York Times’ list of “The 25 Greatest Actors of the 21st Century (So Far)” with an eye to the inevitable reader complaints about questionable inclusions (looking at you, Keanu Reeves) and scandalous omissions (people just love Meryl Streep, I guess). Reaction was so intense, NYT reporter Sarah Bahr published a follow-up Q&A with critics A.O. Scott and Manohla Dargis in which they further explained the reasoning behind their choices. Why no Streep? Because her memorable performances have been counterbalanced by hacky ones, like the screechy Southern mother in “August: Osage County.” My favorite nugget: In an earlier version of the list, Scott included Will Ferrell, who in
that three of the four actors playing the Bailey children are still alive. Yes, including Karolyn Grimes who played Zuzu.
the early to mid-2000s was the comic force in the movies. Unfortunately, Ferrell squandered all that audience goodwill on the likes of “Holmes & Watson,” whose most interesting feature was the ampersand in the title. •Flipping around the channels on Saturday I landed on the 1938 version of “A Christmas Carol” airing on TCM. As I watched the bustling London street scene, I assumed everyone doing all that bustling is now dead, including poor crutch-wielding Tiny Tim. But no. Tim lives! Former child actor Terry Kilburn is 94 years old and resides in Minneapolis, according to his IMDB page. He hasn’t acted since making a guest appearance on “Get Smart” in 1969, but spent many years as artistic director of Oakland University’s Meadow Brook Theatre in Rochester, Michigan. IMDB notes: “Terry Kilburn delivered two of the most famous lines in literary/film history. ‘God bless us everyone’ in ‘A Christmas Carol’ (1938) and
D’Arcy Corrigan, right, and Reginald Owen in “A Christmas Carol.” METRO-GOLDWYN-MAYER STUDIOS

Life” sometime in the next couple of weeks (and why wouldn’t you be), you’ll be heartened to learn
•A decade after it aired, I’ve finally caught up with the comic series “Party Down” on Hulu. The saga of struggling Los Angeles actors working dead-end catering jobs while pursuing entertainment careers is funny, irreverent, and featured some terrific actors on the rise: Adam Scott, Lizzy Caplan, Ryan Hansen, Martin Starr and Ken Marino as the deluded catering chief who dreams of owning a restaurant that specializes in soups. My favorite guest actor is J.K. Simmons as a Hollywood producer whose creative use of profanity is like hearing a new and thrilling language for the first time. I understand the words he’s using, but the wondrous and vivid way he strings them together makes me feel funny inside. CO N T I N U E D O N PAG E 1 9

learly, the cabin fever that’s come with this year’s pandemic has put a number of the region’s musicians in the holiday spirit. Here are a few new recordings from New England musicians to freshen up your holiday playlists. “This Time of Year,” by My Silent Bravery: This is a remarkably understated piece from MSB frontman Matthew Wade, a small and lovely song about finding peace and comfort as winter encroaches. “The sound of your voice always echoes with cheer,” sings Wade, “It warms up my heart/makes the cold disappear/believe in the magic that’s happening here/only at this time of year.” “Holler ‘N Holly,” by Annie Brobst: Regional country favorite
Annie Brobst isn’t offering any original songs on her holiday-themed EP, but her delivery of the old chestnuts “Holly Jolly Christmas,” “A Silent Night,” “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” and the Mariah Carey hit, “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” is top notch. Each song demonstrates what a wonderful
singer Brobst is, how rich her voice is and how her phrasing is impeccable. It’s a charming, joyful little album. “Someday at Christmas,” by Gray Bouchard & The Dedications: While others are playing holiday music straight, the Boston-based band Gray Bouchard &
The Dedications are mixing things up a bit, putting a rock ‘n’ roll spin on Stevie Wonder’s classic paean to peace, “Someday at Christmas.” Still, for all its grungy sensibilities and delightful, squealing guitars, there’s something about this recording that catches the spirit and urgency of the original without irony. “Not Quite Christmas,” Mark Erelli: Mark Erelli is one of the region’s foremost singer-songwriters, and with the wistful “Not Quite Christmas,” he manages to catch the sadness of a Christmas that will see loved ones largely separated. Erelli is an evocative songwriter, though, and while the sorrow that permeates the song is palpable, there’s still an odd delight in such exquisitely crafted lyrics as, “Some carolers came by/Covered up save for their eyes/In hopes of
only spreading some good cheer/ But it’s not quite Christmas without you here.” “Christmasland Jubilee,” by Dan Blakeslee and the Calabash Club: This album by the New England folk outfit Dan Blakeslee and The Calabash Club is an eclectic piece of work, lighthearted with some extremely poignant moments. A mix of originals and classics, there’s a rollicking feel to songs such as “Mister Candy Cane” and “Glowin’, Blowin’, Jumpin’, Swayin’, Wishin’, Swingin’” that a have a toe-tapping Dixieland feel, while others, such as the surprisingly moving “Somerville Lights,” take a heartfelt folk tone. There are moments of groove, such as the highly fun “Reindeer Boogie,” and lightheartedness, such as on “To Be an Elf,” but really, it’s on CO N T I N U E D O N PAG E 1 9

ince the spring, most breweries have not bothered delivering beer to their customers’ homes, having experienced only confusion and disappointment surrounding the process. In February and March, many dutifully waited for official guidance on the issue, even as others started offering home delivery without approval from the state’s Alcohol Beverage Control Commission. When clarity arrived — sort of — in “ the form of an April 3 bill that authorized home delivery for establishments licensed to sell alcohol, most in the brewing industry were underwhelmed. The guidelines, really tailored more for restaurants than breweries, permitted brewers to deliver a mere 192 ounces of beer per transaction, the equivalent of roughly three four-packs. The most common response from breweries was, “Why bother?” “We were taken aback. It would have been a lot of driving, time taken away from being here running the business, for three four-packs,” said Jackie Cullen, co-founder of Fitchburg’s River Styx Brewing Co. She and her husband, Scott, had been ready to drive across the state and back again in a van if it meant sustaining their brewery until the day normal draft sales return.
“We normally wouldn’t drive that far,” Cullen said. “It’s great because we can go and promote the delivery service for those folks out there who really want to get their hands on our beer.” Trillium Brewing Co. and Lost Shoe Brewing and Roasting Co. are at least two other breweries now using UPS for home delivery. That’s not nearly enough, though. Every one of the state’s more than 200 breweries should take the time to fill out the UPS paperwork, because this winter is looking like it will be hell for many of them. Brewers across the state are already seeing sales plummet as coronavirus cases rise. For the pittance paid for some packaging materials, every brewery in Massachusetts could have the ability to deliver beer statewide. And it’s not just a service that appeals to the people who live miles away from the breweries they love or are dying to try: think about all the people who order DoorDash from restaurants they can walk to. Cullen is just as surprised more breweries are not delivering through UPS. She told me she and her husband are available to help walk any brewery through the process. “We would love to,” she said. Interested breweries can reach them at riverstyxbrewing@gmail. com.
mum for each order – but for larger orders, River Styx just requires an additional shipping fee (the flat rate is $17 per order). “We can separate the transactions, and they have to pay additional shipping, but sometimes we will eat that,” Cullen said. “When people place a larger order, we reach out and let them know they can come pick it up curbside for no additional cost or pay the additional shipping charge.” With UPS, River Styx doesn’t have to worry about getting too few or too many orders, as Cullen does not have to gas up the van and deliver the beer herself. “We can take one order, or we can take 500,” she said. Each week, River Styx accepts delivery orders until 5 p.m. on Wednesday; orders placed before then are shipped that week, and orders placed after go out the following week. Home delivery orders have slowed down since River Styx first announced the service, but Cullen believes that’s because the brewery is not advertising it as much. Still, home delivery has been a powerful tool for the brewery, even prompting River Styx to expand its distribution accounts. Early on, Cullen noticed that a bulk of the delivery orders were coming from people living on the Cape, so River Styx added a couple of accounts there.

This beauty is Isabella. Isabella came to the shelter back in February and it was discovered that she was pregnant. After giving birth to 8 healthy and happy puppies, caring for them and seeing them off to their new homes, now it’s her turn. From what we can tell about Isabella, she has not had an easy life. She is looking for a very experienced owner who will commit to training that WARL will be providing for her. Isabella seems to be more trustworthy of women and can be picky about the dogs she chooses to get along with. Her new owner will need to meet her multiple times and display strong handling skills. Isabella is special to both staff and volunteers and deserves a second chance at a loving life. She is an energetic dog who loves to play with toys. She would love to go home with someone who can provide structure and a lot of physical activity for her. Isabella is looking for an adult only home with no other animals. If you would like more information or you would like to set up a meet and greet with her, please contact our Dog program Coordinator at sara@worcesterarl.org.

Enjoy Fun By The Numbers puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test! Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

teve Favulli has dedicated his retirement from the Worcester Fire Department to operating the Box 4 Worcester Canteen Truck, an incident rehab vehicle for public safety personnel. How long were you a Worcester firefighter? I went on the fire department on June 19, 1983, and I retired on August 14th, 2014. You could call it 32 years. Where was your home station? Central Division, which is now a hotel. I was there for 21 years and then they knocked the building down and temporarily relocated us to Grove Street. Then, we moved to Franklin Street when it opened and that’s where I finished my career. I was the third generation of the first Italian firefighter in the city of Worcester. The day I graduated, I got my grandfather’s badge. DYLAN AZARI
How did you revive Box 4? After the fire in ‘99, the Providence canteen truck came up and helped us out. When we lost John Davies in 2011, a couple of us were talking at the station and they said, “Hey, how come we can’t do a truck like Providence?” We talked to the guys from Providence about how to become a 501(c)(3) and started working on it.
to say. I mean, hardened firefighters started to cry. In the spring of 2013, we got the truck and then the Leary Firefighters Foundation stepped up to pay our insurance and buy us a radio system. All we had to do was put a few of Dunkin Donuts logos on it. I said, “The only thing I can’t do is paint it pink and orange. That’s unacceptable.” They all just laughed. Is the canteen only used in Worcester? We go as far north as Lawrence, west to Springfield, south to Milford, and east to Natick. We can make up to 1,300 meals a day in the truck. People who have been burned out of their houses are also welcome to come get a warm drink, and we keep teddy bears for kids to help them calm down. We have dry gloves and a bathroom everyone can use. The only thing we ask in return is for the department to fill our gas tank so we can get back to Worcester. – Sarah Connell Sanders

What role does a canteen truck play at a fire like that and how did Worcester come to have one? Well, it goes back to January 19, 1921. There was a major fire in Worcester, one block down from City Hall, at the Knowles Building. The fire department showed up. They were working all night. A bunch of businessmen including
Was it difficult raising the money for the canteen truck? We had a pretty good showing when we called a meeting for retirees who would want to get involved. One of the city councilors came to the meeting, Tony Economou. He brought a guy by the name of Rob Branca with him, who turned out to be a huge Dunkin’ franchise owner. At our next meeting, Rob came again, but this time he had six people from Dunkin’ corporate with him. We made our presentation and this time the canteen truck from Providence was there. Two weeks later, he called me and said, “I have to have you guys all sign confidentiality statements. We want to come up and talk to you.” Everybody signed them and then the same six people from cooperate met with 55 of us. Rob said, “Corporate decided they’re behind this a hundred percent; they’re going to buy you a fully equipped truck worth over $250,000.” Nobody knew what

I recently revisited an episode of “The Moth” where Michael McNamee speaks about that night. He was the District Chief in charge of the fire. I’m sure it was tough for him and I’m sure he relives that decision every day. But, five minutes before they pulled everybody out, there were 40 guys in the building. They could have lost 40 guys, just as easily as losing the six. That’s how fast things went bad. He made the right call. He saved a lot of people that night.
the Morgan family and the Stoddards all got together and brought blankets, coffee and food to the guys at the fire to help them try to stay warm and hydrated. After that fire, they gained enough respect from the firefighters that they decided to make an official group to report to fires with food and blankets. They called themselves “Box 4.” They even donated a boat for water rescues and a hearse they converted into an ambulance. Their role was a little different then than it is now. Around 1968, most of the volunteers had lost interest and there was no one to take it over.
came and changed the scope of everything.

Did you always know growing up that you wanted to be a firefighter? I was always fascinated by it, but I actually taught school for seven and a half years before the fire department. There was an exam and it was supposed to be given in 1974, but it got pushed back because a judge in Springfield declared the exam unfair for minority candidates. There were all kinds of issues back then. Someone supposedly leaked the exam and people cheated. We all had to retake it. Finally, in ‘83 we got appointed. By then, I was just one course short of my master’s degree in Special Education. I never looked back. Once I got to the fire department, I said, “This is where I belong and this is what I want to do.” I don’t even view it as a job. We had a lot of fun when we could have fun. And when we had to work, all bets were off. Everybody did their part. We did what we had to do. We watched out for each other; we covered each other’s backs. Up until ‘99, we never had serious problems, you know? And then ‘99
