ACADEMIC SOCIETIES GUIDE
Academic Societies Societies are student-led groups where like-minded individuals can get together and share their interests. By starting an academic society you can get involved with creating opportunities and events for students that can have long term benefits, while making a difference and meeting new friends.
From the very first steps of getting started and throughout your time with the society, the Students’ Union can provide support. This ranges from helping you to plan and promote to the general day-to-day running of the society.

What events should you do?

When first starting an academic society or planning for the new year ahead it can be hard to know what kind of events and activities you should put on that aren’t just replicating what you learn in lectures.

Academic societies can often have the widest range of potential activities open to them. It could be from arranging a talk from a guest lecturer or local employer to organising a Christmas meal for the course to going go karting to celebrate the end of exams. The opportunities are endless!

To help you with organising your own activities and events, we've put together a list of some of the things that other academic societies have done that might inspire you. There are so many thing activities that you can organise for an academic society that include developing your skills and still having fun. The SU Committee Resource Hub provides further assistance with putting on these events and your institute is there to help as well.
Why get involved? “The study days and other learning events that the society has organised have been amazing, and beneficial to my learning. It has also been a great social opportunity, getting to know people better who are on the course, throughout all of the year groups. I would recommend joining an academic society to anyone who is considering it!” Recruitment Pioneer for Midwifery Society “It's been great to become involved with something which is not directly related to my course and it has enabled me to further develop transferable skills associated with communication, problem-solving and organisation.” Inclusivity Rep for Education Enhancement “I’ve found being a member of the midwifery society committee has enhanced my skills and knowledge for the course. Organising and promoting study days, as well as attending them, brings other aspects to your knowledge that isn’t taught in the lecture room.” Ella Sanford, Social Media Champion for Midwifery
