hen you think of the Internet’s role in commerce, you probably think of consumers with credit cards in hand making purchases directly from a website. But a recent study of business leaders found that social media is also an important research tool for companies who make purchases from other companies. The Social Buying Study from International Data Corporation (IDC) found that 75 percent of business-to-business (B2B) buyers and 84 percent of C-level/vice president executives use social media to support purchase decisions. For business owners, this study highlights the importance of using social media tools to establish credibility online. In the final stage of the purchasing process, when stakes are highest, online professional networks have become an important source of information for companies looking to purchase goods and services from other businesses. “As the use of social networks expands, the gap between companies that use social networks for buying and selling and those that do not will widen, creating a significant disadvantage for companies that lag behind,” says Michael Fauscette, who leads IDC’s Software Business Solutions Group.

Rural economies grow when citizens adopt broadband Having a robust broadband network is important for rural communities, but a new study shows that the real impact comes when citizens learn how to put the power of broadband to work in their homes and businesses. Brian Whitacre, an associate professor of agricultural economics at Oklahoma State University, led the study, which was funded by the National Agricultural and Rural Development Policy Center. “We found that rural counties that did a good job of adopting broadband had higher rates of income growth and lower rates of unemployment growth,” he says. For example, counties with a high level of broadband adoption — those in which 60 percent or more of the households had a wired high-speed Internet connection — experienced higher income growth and saw a smaller increase in unemployment rates than did counties that did not reach the 60 percent threshold. Focused on doing the right thing As a community-based telecommunications provider, our focus is on meeting the needs of those we serve. To us, that means being ready to do the right thing every day for the communities we serve, no matter what challenges may come along. As we prepare to celebrate Veterans Day, I am reminded of a story that serves as a powerful illustration of that ideal. It was Feb. 19, 1945, when American forces landed on Iwo Jima, a Pacific island some 750 miles south of the Japanese mainland. The island was a strategic stronghold for the Empire of Japan. If the U.S. could secure the island, it could stop the Japanese from interfering with bombing raids on Tokyo and ultimately use Iwo Jima’s airstrips to launch an invasion of the mainland. After four days of intense battle, during which hundreds were wounded or killed, U.S. forces took control of Mount Suribachi, a 554-foot-high mountain on the southwest tip of the island. Marines scaled to the top and planted an American flag. The Secretary of the Navy, James Forrestal, wanted that flag as a souvenir, so a second flag was brought up to erect. What happened next changed history. Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal was not present for the first flag raising, and almost missed the second one as he was piling up rocks to stand on for a better vantage point for a photo. When he saw the five Marines and one Navy corpsman beginning to raise the flag, he grabbed his camera from where he had set it on the ground and took the shot without even looking through the viewfinder. It wasn’t until later that Rosenthal knew what he had captured. And neither he nor anyone in the photograph could have imagined the impact that single image would have on the overall war. The photo became an icon, a symbol of American victory. To a country growing weary of a world war, the sacrifices on the homefront and the loss of sons and husbands, the photo served as an inspiring confirmation that good would prevail. It also became the central image of the Seventh War Bond campaign, which would raise billions of dollars to help fund the successful end of World War II. Rosenthal and the flag raisers were serving their country and doing what was right in the midst of incredible challenges. And the impact of their work will be felt for generations. Though what we face today pales by comparison to the sacrifices of that generation, rural telecommunications providers like us have our own set of challenges. Industry changes, market forces and regulatory action are putting pressures on us unlike anything this industry has ever seen. But we are committed to doing the right thing, to serving you to the best of our ability. And we know that if we remain focused on the task at hand, good things will happen — for your telco, for your community, for all of us. This holiday season, I encourage us all to take a few minutes to thank a veteran for his or her service, to count our blessings as Americans, to cherish the time we have with our families and to recommit ourselves to being ready to do what is right for our community and those around us. Nearby veterans museums honor those who served
W
hile many national and local events are planned each year for Veterans Day, celebrated on Nov. 11, two regional museums showcase the courage and sacrifice of servicemen and servicewomen year-round. Those interested can visit these local treasures to see some of the area’s best military memorabilia and remember the accomplishments of the veterans who helped to preserve this country’s way of life.
U.S. VETERANS MEMORIAL MUSEUM, HUNTSVILLE For Randy Withrow, it all started with a helmet. As a young boy he was fascinated by the military. He told his father he wanted to acquire a WWII German helmet — and he did. And then he acquired a little more. And a little more. Today, the Vietnam veteran houses his collection in a 12,000-square-foot building in Huntsville. His collection has been gifted to a nonprofit that operates the U.S. Veterans Memorial Museum. Withrow serves as the museum curator, though he’s quick to point out that it’s not about him. He’s committed to honoring the sacrifices and accomplishments of veterans. The museum collection — which features artifacts from the Revolutionary War to today’s conflicts — includes tanks, helicopters, airplanes, motorcycles, guns, heavy artillery and even the Ford Pygmy, which Withrow believes to be the one of the first Jeeplike vehicles ever produced. “After being in the military, I gained a great appreciation for it and for our nation that’s been protected by veterans,” says Withrow, who served 26 years in the U.S. Army. “All of the artifacts are here to show people what our military has done to protect our country.”
ALABAMA VETERANS MUSEUM AND ARCHIVES, ATHENS Military history tends to gravitate toward the big picture. Stories often point to the massive battles, the weaponry used and the commanders who guided the forces. But the Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives, located in Athens, does its best to remember the locals who served, while still painting the overall view of what happened. In 1995, Kenneth David, a local veterans service officer, acquired dozens of remembrances to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the end of WWII. After the exhibit closed, many contributors left their artifacts with David, and in 2000, the museum was opened as a permanent location to display the collection, which the museum continues to expand. Much like the U.S. Veterans Memorial Museum, the Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives features artifacts from the Revolutionary War to today, and both are operated solely by volunteers. The Limestone County museum features uniforms, medals, weapons, photographs and hundreds of relics housed in the former L&N Railroad depot building. “We tell the personal side of the story,” says Museum Director Sandy Thompson. “Visitors get to see the stories through the eyes of the actual veterans. We try to teach visitors about the sacrifices of those who served in our military.”

A heart for her hometown After more than 40 years at Ardmore, Judy Campbell is still smiling
J
udy Campbell knows a thing or two about Ardmore Telephone Company. After 44 years of service, she’s become Ardmore’s longestserving employee, and she’s seen a lot of changes along the way. From party lines to high-speed broadband, Campbell has never lost her enthusiasm for the hometown company she grew up with. “When you are born here and you grow up in the community and then you start working here, it’s just hard to leave home,” says Campbell. “It’s familiar territory because you know everyone and everyone knows you.” Starting at Ardmore in 1970 when she was 18, Campbell has spent most of her life serving her friends and neighbors, even if it means the occasional workrelated phone call at home. “When customers will call me at home, I don’t think anything about it,” says Campbell. “They know they can call us anytime, and we’ll help them. We always try to put an extra effort in for everyone.” Campbell does so much to supply the extra effort that she forgot her official title long ago. Technically, she’s the plant records clerk and a customer service representative, but it takes a phone call to her boss to find it out. “With such a small staff, you end up working very closely with each other,” explains Campbell. “We do a lot more than what our title says.” During her time at Ardmore, she’s done just about everything: Beginning in billing, then moving to the plant department for dispatch, and then on to assignments and running jumpers in the central office. Now, Campbell still fulfills many of those responsibilities, plus she works in Ardmore’s New Market office two days a week. But even with all the satisfaction her work has brought her, perhaps Campbell is happiest when she stops the technical work of a phone company and satisfies her creative side. She’s a self-proclaimed “junker,” turning the trash she’ll often find on the side of the road into treasure. Some of her favorite finds and buys are kerosene heaters that she repurposes into

Additionally, Campbell is often found painting, refinishing furniture and even flipping houses. “I stay pretty busy,” Campbell says, jokingly. “I don’t sit around that much.” Recently, rather than move into another home to flip, Campbell built a new home on her father’s 80-acre cattle farm. The two of them split the duties of caring for 50 head of cattle. “The cattle take constant care, but it’s amazing to see them grow up,” says Campbell. “Watching and caring for them is becoming my favorite pastime.” Although she says she’ll likely retire in a few years, Campbell has no doubt that she’ll stay busy — but she also has no doubt that she’ll miss the customers of Ardmore. “The absolute best part of my job is meeting the customers,” says Campbell. “Everyone has a story to tell and everyone has a smile. I love greeting someone and seeing them smile back because they know I’m here to help them.” November/December 2014 | 9

More than 49,000 vehicles drove through the grounds in 2013, enjoying more than 3.5 million lights and a magical Santa’s Village that would even put Scrooge in the holiday spirit. Old Ebenezer would be aghast that the event proceeds are donated, with $1.4 million dollars given to local charities since 2004.

That’s a busy week for reindeer.

ike it has for thousands of years, God’s message has stayed the same. But as technology continues to change, the delivery method for God’s word is also changing. More and more pastors around the New Market area have noticed the changes. They’ll quote a Bible verse, and the congregation will whip out their smartphones and tablets, rather than their Bibles, to read along. It’s part of the changing landscape of how people are incorporating technology into their daily lives. By and large, many churches are adopting the changes as well. “The use of technology today isn’t any different than what they were doing thousands of years ago,” says Rob Collins, associate pastor of Locust Grove Baptist Church. “We’re using one of the best ways to communicate today, just like they did back then.” He’s right. Much like how the printing press revolutionized spreading the Word, many in the ministry today are using Facebook, Twitter, the Web and other forms of technology to reach new audiences that they may not be able to find otherwise.

GROWING THE FLOCK For churchgoers moving into a new area, one of the toughest tasks is finding a new church. Many families will spend weeks attending different church services throughout the area before settling on a new place to call home. Many more won’t be able to find a church that suits them and choose to continue Bible study on their own. But now there’s a new way to shepherd. Ardmore Telephone Company
“A couple of families have joined our church after they checked out our website and Facebook pages and decided to try our services,” says Matt Reed, pastor of the New Market United Methodist Church. “It’s a very non-threatening way to learn about the church and what we try to teach.” Reed uses the church’s Facebook page for announcements, updates and sharing photos. He’s even solicited ideas for sermon topics and started asking the congregation for questions to see if they can “stump the pastor.” Less than a mile away, Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church has also seen its following grow because of social media. “We had a young woman who came to our church who was here from Oregon,” says Larry Davidson, Hopewell’s pastor. “She wanted to attend a church while she was visiting here, and she went online and decided to come here to visit. We’ve had a lot of people come visit our church who otherwise may have never heard of us without social media.” People in church may even tweet song lyrics or a message that’s particularly moving to them. “I don’t see it as being disrespectful; it’s just how we communicate,” says Collins. “To me, that’s just expanding the ministry to a few hundred people that weren’t here at the service.” And like many churches with a more robust online presence, Hopewell, New Market UMC and Locust Grove give members the opportunity to tithe online. Several area churches are also posting audio or video recordings of each week’s sermon, so church members can go back and listen to the lessons that have been taught previously. They’re part of a growing trend. A study by The Barna Group, a research organization focused on spiritual development, concluded in an April 2012 study that 62 percent of Protestant churches have an Internet presence and 26 percent are using social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. New Market UMC has seen several people attend its services after learning about the church online. and during a recent church service, the congregation at Locust Grove was treated to a special video presentation. The church does mission work in a very small village in Guatemala that just so happens to have Internet, and the villagers were able to connect and share their thanks over a video call during the church service. “Here we are in New Market, able to wave over a video call to a remote village in Guatemala that our team is working with,” says Collins. The Barna study also noted that more than 65 percent of Protestant churches
now regularly use large screen projections during their services, compared to only 39 percent in 2000. It’s all part of the changing ways that God’s message is spreading throughout the world because of the new connections technology allows. “If you’re serious about ministering to people around you, technology is necessary,” says Collins. “It would be foolish to not use it, especially when so much of it is free. It’s revolutionary in the way that you can reach out to people.”

ike a movie produced with no supporting actors, a holiday meal produced with no supporting sides would be left on the cutting-room floor. “Sides are as important as the entree, if not more so,” says Jason Evans, now in his 12th year as executive chef at Evins Mill, a 40-acre resort along the Cumberland Plateau in Smithville, Tennessee. “The side dishes can set the mood for the meal. A beautifully roasted turkey or ham can be part of an elegant, formal dinner or a comforting, traditional holiday feast, depending on what the sides are.” Evans can’t name a favorite side. It all depends on the season, he says. But for holiday meals, he admits to a traditional craving for mashed potatoes, fresh cranberry relish and deviled eggs — sides for many Thanksgiving and Yuletide feasts. “I try to avoid having all starches like potatoes, corn, and mac and cheese,” he says. “Make sure you have a nice variety with lots of colors.” For example, go with mashed potatoes, cranberry relish and honey carrots. Or try corn pudding, roasted sweet potatoes and green beans. Offer as many side dishes as you are comfortable preparing without making yourself too busy to enjoy the meal. Three sides is a good rule of thumb, Evans notes. And to make the meal a family event, ask guests to bring their favorite side dishes, while you prepare the turkey or roast. ,

SOME OF EVANS’ FAVORITE PAIRINGS ARE: bb Serve sweet potatoes with pork. Try roasting the sweet potatoes in a little coconut oil for something different. bb For beef, Evans likes a side that contains cream or cheese, or a side with a smooth consistency. It makes for a nice combination in the mouth to serve as almost a sauce for the hearty steak or roast. Some suggestions are potato gratin, mashed cauliflower, cheese grits or fresh broccoli casserole. bb Evans says roasting a chicken makes him want to “kill two birds with one stone, so to speak. If you already have the oven on for roasting the bird, throw some winter root vegetables in the pan with it. Cooking in all those natural juices and fat from the chicken is heaven. Rutabaga, turnip, parsnip, carrot and onion make a delicious and hearty vegetable combination.” bb Casseroles are usually on the creamy, cheesy side, which is why Evans loves them. “I like contrast in my meals,” he says, “and this is a great time to have something sweet and sour, or a lightly sauteed vegetable medley on the side. Something simple so everyone can still gorge on the casserole, but a side that is going to have a different mouth feel in texture and flavor.” bb Keep in mind the importance of using the freshest of vegetables and other ingredients for your side dishes. Evans finds local foods to be the best and is committed to the farm-to-table movement, supporting nearby farmers and other food purveyors. “They’re harder to come by in the holiday season since the growing season is all but over for most items,” he says, “but we still try to get as much as we can. We still get local eggs in the winter. I can source local nuts, winter greens, some root veggies, and a few other odds and ends from our local farms. It is just as important for the holidays, just a little harder.”

There will also be a New Year’s brunch served on Jan. 1, with select dishes to start your new year off in delicious fashion. The brunch is $35 per person. CRANBERRY RELISH T his side dish is most often served with braised duck at Evins Mill, but works just as well with any of your holiday meals. 1 bag fresh cranberries, washed (substitute with dried cranberries if out of season) 1 cup sugar 1 Granny Smith apple, roughly chopped, with peel 1 fresh orange, roughly chopped, with peel Combine all ingredients in food processor, pureeing until smooth. Refrigerate until chilled through. Makes about 1 quart.
Cranberry Relish
AU GRATIN POTATOES The perfect accompaniment to pork, beef, fish and chicken, and a standard favorite at Evins Mill. 4 Idaho potatoes or sweet potatoes 2 1/2 cups heavy cream (if using sweet potatoes, reduce cream by 1/2 cup) 2 cups shredded Parmesan cheese 2 tablespoons roasted garlic, chopped (optional) Salt and fresh cracked pepper, to taste Wash potatoes and allow them to dry. Slice potatoes as thin as you can, enough to layer bottom of baking dish. Spray baking dish with non-stick spray. Layer the potatoes on the bottom of dish by shingling. Season with salt and pepper and
1/4 of roasted garlic. Sprinkle with 1/4 of the Parmesan cheese. Pour 1/4 of cream over layer. Repeat process for the next three layers. Cover dish with foil. Bake at 325° for 1-1/2 hours or until tender all the way through when testing with knife. Uncover and return to oven to brown top for about 10-15 minutes. Makes 16 (1/2-cup) servings.
STONE-GROUND CHEESE GRITS Stone-ground grits make the difference in this recipe. Use your favorite, or like they do at Evins Mill, use local grits, such as those ground at The Old Mill in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
4 cups 2 percent milk 1/4 cup butter (1/2 stick) or olive oil 1 cup stone-ground grits 1 cup grated cheese, preferably sharp cheddar Salt, fresh cracked pepper & crushed red pepper flakes, to taste Bring milk, butter or oil, salt, pepper and crushed red pepper to boil. Add grits and reduce heat to a simmer. Stir often until grits are tender and thickening. This will take 30 to 40 minutes. Stir in cheese and enjoy with eggs at breakfast or steak at dinner. Makes 4-6 servings.
