Salisbury Electrician Matt Payne talks to Hamptons.

Tell us a little about the background of your firm?

Following a varied career in electrical engineering and then teaching, 11 years ago Matt decided to retrain as an electrician and launched out as a sole trader in the local area of Salisbury. Starting initially with family and friends, he grew his client base and gained experience in a variety of domestic and commercial electrical work.

In 2015 the company became incorporated and was then named Matt Payne Electrical Ltd. By this stage the company had a home office in the purpose built cabin at the end of the garden. That made it easier to other staff including apprentices, an admin assistant and other electricians.

Work has expanded into installing smart home systems and working with other companies to install solar PV systems.

We are now a team of six and have moved into a unit in Churchfields, with space for storage and offices to carry out the administration work.

We are currently undertaking training and preparation to expand later this year into eco industries, including solar PV, battery storage and EV chargers.

What type of projects have you been working on recently?

Currently we are working on a large Grade II listed building in the centre of Salisbury providing new distribution boards, sockets and lights in keeping with the ornate building.

We undertake lots of electrical tests and inspections on Grade I and Grade II listed buildings in the Cathedral Close along with renovation works to resolve the electrical issues discovered.

We install lots of consumer unit changes, kitchen refits requiring new electrical works, electrical installations in garden cabins and outbuildings. Also doing smaller jobs – changing light fittings to LED and fitting electric towel rails.

Looking back, there a job that you are most proud of?

The installation of a smart home system in a modernised contemporary new build in Vauxhall, London. The home control system enabled control of all the lights, heating and blinds. Presence simulation and intercom system enhanced the convenience and security. There was a swimming pool in the basement, elevated garden out the back with automatic lighting and irrigation system.

Have there been any major changes in trends and customer demands over the years?

The general public have recently had a greater awareness of increasing energy bills and so the use of solar PV, battery storage and EV chargers have definitely become more popular - which is why as a company we are embracing the installation of this technology. More efficient heating systems have become available such as efficient oil filled radiators and air-to-air heating systems.

Businesses and homes alike can make huge energy savings by removing outdated light fittings and replacing with more efficient LEDs whether that is LED panels in an office, LED spotlights in a kitchen or LED outdoor lighting.

Following COVID more and more people are working from home and looking to utilise their existing space more, this often results in more electrical works for extensions, garden offices, outbuilding and even the odd hot tub or two!

Thank you Matt.
