There are so many inspirations available that anything that can be turned into an incredible piece of furniture or be the starting point of an impressive project. CovetED brings you some of the news and trends of the design world that will surely inspire many changes to come. JOANA VASCONCELOS WILL LAUNCH AN EXHIBITION IN BOSTON’S NEW MUSEUM Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos was invited to create a monumental installation for the opening of the new Boston Contemporary Art Museum in the United States on February 22nd, 2020. The piece will be created specifically for the MassArt Art Museum (MAAM) space, in what will be Vasconcelos’ first solo exhibition in the United States. Part of the Valkyrie series, the piece was created to honour Elizabeth ‘Mumbet’ Freeman, an enslaved woman whose legal battle for freedom in 1781 helped outlaw slavery in the US state of Massachusetts. Titled ‘Valkyrie Mumbet’ (2020), the oversized piece, with a centre from which tentacle arms come out, will be suspended.

BEST OF MONACO YACHT SHOW 2019 From 25th to 28th September 2019, the Monaco Yacht Show featured the most impressive fleet of superyachts in the history of the event and attracted a record-breaking number of exhibitors: 600 companies came to energise the yachting market, drawing an encouragingly vast and committed clientele to the show. For four days, 125 superyachts worth a combined $4.3 billion came together in the Mediterranean, with 44 making their debuts. Four prizes were awarded at the 6th Monaco Yacht Show Superyacht Awards ceremony. The list of winners comprised three vessels: Attila (64m, Sanlorenzo) received the MYS/RINA Award for its design, which complies with the environmental standards established by RINA, the Italian company in charge of classifying superyachts; TIS, a brand new 111-metre yacht by German shipyard Lürssen, received the MYS Interior Design Award; and lastly, Excellence (80m, Abeking & Rasmussen) won two prizes: the MYS Exterior Design Award, and the ceremony’s most prestigious award, the MYS Finest New Superyacht Award.

MAISON & OBJET JANUARY 2020 What’s new! Since 1995, Maison & Objet has been the world’s foremost event for professionals in the lifestyle, interior design and design industries. Each edition brings together over 3,000 exhibitors and more than 85,000 unique visitors, half coming from outside France. Promoting new contacts and emerging talents, this fair presents the latest sources of inspiration. By shedding light on current and future trends, Maison & Objet has become a catalyst for brand development and business growth.

Launched in September 2016, the digital platform MOM (MAISON & OBJET AND MORE) offers a comprehensive overview of up-to-date news and products from the manufacturers, artisans and designers who exhibit at the fair. A bottomless source of inspiration, it also provides a tool for visitors to communicate directly with thousands of brands throughout the year. Below, you can see a brief preview of what to expect from this year’s edition in the City of Lights. MICHAEL ANASTASSIADES: THE DESIGNER OF THE YEAR Michael Anastassiades launched his lighting brand in 2007 and presented it first-hand at Maison & Objet. In 2020, he comes back as Designer of the Year. In the last 13 years, he has become one of the most poetic and prolific lighting designers. The work of this Cypriot designer features simple shapes and volumes - a sphere, a line, a circle - to create a rich language where uncertainty and imbalance reign. The simplicity of his designs is a labour of love, something that is not easily achieved. He strongly believes that designers create relationships and interactions between people and crafts. A master of Light, Anastassiades believes that to design a lamp, you need to embrace darkness. He defends the idea that lights are a source of warmth and is completely fascinated with its glow. Michael Anastassiades’s almost obsessive search for the essence of an object leads him to a misleading simplicity. The simplicity encourages curiosity, and curiosity leads to participation and interaction, a constant feature of all Anastassiades’s projects.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH ROBERTO RINCON The Renovation of the bespoke Covet NYC Covet New York is more than a showroom. It is a staged apartment where the best European lighting and luxury furniture brands came together and created a curated luxury apartment. It has recently moved to a different location in order to provide an even more curated and exclusive experience. Following the recent renovation of Covet NYC, CovetED Magazine had the chance to have a wonderful conversation with the assigned interior designer Roberto Rincon. Roberto was the name responsible for the outstanding selection and composition of the most curated furniture pieces from the world’s most coveted luxury brands. And the result couldn’t be more perfect.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

SPAIN’S MOST COVETED DESIGNERS Casa Decor is a prestigious exhibition that takes place in Madrid at the very beginning of every year. It dictates the hottest interior design trends, while top luxury brands present their newest products to the entire world. Considering that this prestigious Spanish trade show is a celebration of high-end design that brings together the world’s most influential interior designers from the industry, CovetED Magazine took that opportunity to interview Erico Navazo, Patricia Bustos and Blanca Hevia.

The relation between Portuguese Design Industry and Spanish Interior Designers by Erico Navazo Born in Burgos, northern Spain, Eric Navazo is famous for his ability to make everything to fit in the most amazing and welcoming way. He focuses on making living spaces where you can find treasures from all periods, from the 18th century to the 50s. When we questioned Erico about the present connection of Spain within design, he proudly stated that it is a good moment and now that we all have the Internet, there are endless sources for inspirations and references. Bearing that in mind, when he designs his projects, Erico always thinks about the impact of how many people are going to see them. And that also means the impact of Spain internationally. In terms of portfolio, it is visible that Erico takes a lot of inspiration from Nature. You can see that through the textures, the details, the rustic and the permissive that inspires him during the conception of each project. Side by side with Nature is craftsmanship. And it’s precisely here that the relationship between Spain and Portugal becomes so relevant. Both countries have always had Luis Leão, Senior Account executive at Covet House with Erico Navarro

CREATING SPACES WITH STORYTELLING WITH BLANCA HEVIA When you’re a designer, anything that surrounds you will “inspire you. (...) You need to live, to have moments and

personal stories reflected in your projects. Blanca Hevia is one of the best Spanish interior designers with world recognition. She defines her style as contemporary with classic lines. But she is also esteemed for her ability to create spaces with storytelling.

During

our

wonderful

conversation,

we had the chance to explore the concept behind the creation of Blanca Havia’s space at Casa Decor 2019: “The Memory of Water ”. The decor recreates the natural cycle of water elements, living the memories of each one. There is the birth of the fish, the bottom of the ocean with corals until the water flows in the bathroom furnishing pieces. Everything is connected, cycled and in motion to transmit tranquillity. And by everything, we also mean the pieces of ceramics, wallpaper and even the smallest detail. Blanca believes that when you’re a designer, anything that surrounds you, can and will inspire you. For instance, this project for Casa Decor 2019 was inspired by the beach and the sea. So, to do this job properly, you need to live, collect moments and personal stories that you will afterwards imprint when conceiving the perfect home interior decor. And that’s how the story begins.

COVETED MAGAZINE PAGE 91 EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH Marcel Wanders and Gabriel Chiave Marcel Wanders is one of the leading product and interior designers, with thousands of iconic projects under his name. After working with numerous luxury brands like Baccarat and Louis Vuitton, Marcel Wanders announced a new project with Barovier & Toso during Salone del Mobile 2019. CovetED had the pleasure of catching up with the designer at the brand’s stand during the fair. Marcel Wanders is quite a versatile designer, with projects ranging from architecture, interior or industrial design. According to the designer, the best thing about his work is being able to do something unique and new every day. “I am a proud designer, and as interior designers, we are lucky we can do the things we love every day”, he said. When asked about what makes him happy, the designer compared the design process to a puzzle, where you have all the pieces and you have to make them fit whilst finding the beauty in it. However, his favourite part of the process are the difficulties and obstacles you may find along the way, saying that fixing those issues makes him “eternally happy”. Marcel Wanders and Barovier & Toso have been working together for the past seven years, creating one-of-a-kind, eccentric pieces like rotating chandeliers or glass puppets. But Wanders felt they should create something incredible that went beyond the idea of a simple lamp, thus creating the ‘Adonis’ chandelier.

We all agreed that we were going to do a “chandelier like no other, a chandelier that should have been made a hundred years ago and that would stay with us forever, a piece that is filled with contemporary ideas.

The designer saw his creation for the first time at Salone del Mobile 2019 and was blown away. ‘Adonis’ is a modular chandelier, with several shapes and sizes, as well as different materials and decorations. “We are really looking forward to develop this chandelier to be an eternal icon for the world”, said the designer.

Regarding his creative process, Gabriele Chiave starts with an idea or a simple sketch, but his favourite part is going to the factories and develop the pieces next to the master artisans. Chiave values the heritage of companies and their crafts, as well as their craftsmen, so working alongside them is one of the most important things to the Italian creative director. “The masters are tough guys and that is the point. From all this power, there is this beautiful, delicate and feminine material that comes out.”Murano glass plays an important role in Chiave’s projects. By partnering up with a company, their culture, history, capacity and materials always have to be acknowledged. One of the most honourable Italian materials is the Murano glass, so the creative director takes great pride in working with it. The glass is delicate, light, colourful and romantic, being the highlight of the new ‘Adonis’ chandelier, a collaboration between Marcel Wanders Studio and Barovier & Toso. When it comes to craftsmanship, Chiave believes it is essential in a designer’s work. A designer needs to look into the past and make sure the expertise of craftsmen isn’t forgotten, although he thinks that “the expertise in our modern design word has been lost for a while”.

Craftsmanship makes things more durable, “there is a quality into it, there is passion. There is something that makes the pieces be of a much higher-quality.

After spending his younger years moving from city to city, Gabriele Chiave settled down in Milan where he studied Industrial Design at IED. In 2007, he moved to Amsterdam and landed the incredible spot as Creative Director at Marcel Wanders, starting an amazing collaboration that lasts to this day. CovetED had the opportunity to meet Chiave at Barovier & Toso’s stand during Salone del Mobile 2019, to find out more about his work.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH Johannes Torpe Johannes Torpe is an amazing Danish designer that has helped clients worldwide build and strengthen their brands through playful and thought-provoking design solutions for over 20 years, with the renowned Johannes Torpe Studios, where he is the creative director. Having worked in many areas of the world, Johannes’ practice has achieved a universality that speaks for itself. His diverse portfolio spans from interior design, industrial design, furniture design to large scale architectural concepts. CovetED had the pleasure of catching up with the designer during Salone del Mobile 2019. From a young age that Johannes Torpe felt that he would be in a place where he had achieved something. This is a reflection of hardworking years to be where he is today, through a number of different experiences, such as music or graphic design, before arriving at design and architecture. However, his greatest accomplishment is good life quality. After working and living all over the world, Torpe admits he has finally achieved his inner peace and feels like himself on a daily basis. When it comes to design projects, the designer admits he can’t choose a favourite, saying “it’s like looking back at all the lovers in your life and see which one was the best”. But he does know where he loves to work: where the people are nice and the work becomes joy. That is why Torpe loves working with the Italian brand Moroso since it feels like a long-time family friend. For Salone del Mobile 2019, they presented their newest collaboration, the ‘Heartbreaker’ sofa collection. Torpe sees craftsmanship as the essence of Italian companies, since

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH Lorenza Luti This year marks the 70th anniversary of Kartell, the renowned design company that is one of the biggest symbols of Italian design around the world. Founded in 1949 by Giulio Castelli but now run by Claudio Luti, the brand tells its story through a series of timeless but contemporary design products. Lorenza Luti, daughter of the brand’s CEO, also plays a significant role at Kartell, as its Marketing and Retail Director. CovetED had the chance to interview Lorenza during Salone del Mobile 2019, to find out what’s in store for the future of Kartell. Lorenza takes great pride in Kartell, due to the brand’s ability to innovate. Her favourite product is the Componibile cabinet, designed by her grandmother, that has been on sale for over 50 years. “It’s still one of the best sellers of the brand and very actual in today’s design. This year we presented it with a bioplastic material so we gave a new life to it and it’s, for sure, one of the projects I am most proud of”, she said. The “A.I.” project with Philippe Starck was one of the highlights of Salone del Mobile this year. Lorenza sees it as an advantage for Kartell, since it makes the production process so much easier and faster, making it able for the brand to deliver the products in a shorter amount of time. According to Lorenza, Kartell and Starck are already working on new projects together, with four new pieces of the Smart Wood collection coming next year.

We like to work with premium luxury Italian “brands and we are putting our energies together

to push the ‘Made in Italy’ out into the world.

When it comes to craftsmanship, Kartell always had a strong connection with this concept, since all their prototypes are made by hand. The connection is even more special when it comes to Murano Glass because Claudio Luti’s father worked with it. That’s where the inspiration for the ‘La Boheme’ project came from, resulting in amazing Murano glass pieces designed by Philippe Starck.

Everybody king on making sustainability happen, not just in the product, but also in the company’s process. We have to keep more than an eye on it for the future.

WEST END | 103 Carol Kurth Architecture Located on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, this pre-war apartment received a gut renovation of the central entertaining spaces by Carol Kurth Architecture. The award-winning architect and interior designer transformed a compartmentalized floor plan to create flow and fluidity within the design. Part of the goal was to unify the spaces and open up relationships between adjoining rooms, embracing the pre-war aspects of the apartment while bringing a modernist sensibility to the design.

This was achieved by designing steel-clad openings that transition spaces, celebrating the building’s 1920s architecture which features rusticated terracotta trim around the façade windows. Lighting played an important role in the design of the space, as the apartment had no existing ceiling or wall lighting. By designing a built-in millwork, Kurth was able to introduce linear LED glow lighting both in the millwork and through the architecturally significant Coltrane wall sconces by DelightFULL, amplifying the lighting and design aesthetic. These modern fixtures were chosen as they gave double the impact with two asymmetrical lamps of up and downlight, creating a striking lighting effect with the black and gold contrast. The sconces’ bold forms punctuate the space and define the seating area, as well as flank the media built-in on the opposite side of the room. As an architect and interior designer, Carol Kurth is drawn to the effect that lighting shadows play upon surfaces. The black and gold Coltrane sconces gleam against the matte textures of the millwork, creating a beautiful effect. The lighting rounded out a cohesive architectural design, picking up the various metal detailing in the

archways and millwork, thus creating a thread of dynamic interest throughout the home. Part of the design scope included sourcing and curating art for the apartment. In the design process, the architect allocated areas where art would be an emphasis, creating niches and accent lighting to amplify the specified works within those spaces and celebrating the firm’s tenets of “Architecture as a backdrop for living “ and “Interiors as an inspiration for lifestyle.”
