Monument Valley, Hunts Mesa There are two great locations to shoot from once you’re up at the top of Hunt’s Mesa and this is the first one we’ll visit for the afternoon shoot. Some say the morning location is even better! Photo: Peter Eastway on the 2018 tour.

Death Valley Dune Made famous by many of America’s great photographers over the decades, the dunes are as spectacular as ever if you know where to wander. And if you don’t, it doesn’t matter! Just enjoy the search and you’ll find some wonderful angles.

The Itinerary D ay 1 - 1 1 Feb ruar y 2 0 1 9 You should already be San Francisco and we may have had a meal together the night before. We’ll pick you up at the hotel and drive to the amazing Yosemite Valley, in time for sunset!

D ay 2 - 1 2 Feb ruar y Tour Yosemite NP. There is so much to see around the valley floor and up a couple of the side roads too. Who knows, maybe there’ll be some fresh snow! Overnight in Yosemite NP.

D ay 3 - 1 3 Feb ruar y Sunrise in Yosemite, but no mucking around! After breakfast we’re driving to Bridgeport, a really quaint Western town full of urban potential! Overnight Bridgeport.

D ay 4 - 1 4 Feb ruar y Sunrise in Bridgeport for a photo walk; an authentic Western breakfast and then a short drive to Bodie Ghost Town for the day and then onto Lone Pine for the night.

D ay 5 - 1 5 Feb ruar y We’ll check out the Alabama Hills just outside Lone Pine this morning and then drive into the magnificent Death Valley. Overnight in Death Valley.

D ay 6 - 1 6 Feb ruar y We’ll shoot the famous Mesquite sand dunes this morning and then spend time down at Badwater in the afternoon. Should be a chance for some post-production help as well! Overnight in Death Valley.

D ay 7 - 1 7 Feb ruar y After a spectacular sunrise shoot at Zabriskie point, we’ll take a drive to the Grand Canyon South Rim for a sunset shoot. Overnight at the Grand Canyon.

D ay 8 - 1 8 Feb ruar y Sunrise will be at the Grand Canyon and then we’ll drive to Monument Valley for sunset. Maybe we’ll shoot the stars that night from the hotel, or shall we just wait until the next night?

D ay 9 - 1 9 Feb ruar y Today we tour Monument Valley with a pre-breakfast drive with a local Navajo guide, and then our guides will take us up to Hunts Mesa for a grand overview and camping out under the stars. All camping equipment is supplied, you’ll be warm and toasty, and it’s an experience you’ll treasure for a lifetime!

D ay 1 0 - 2 0 Feb ruar y You can’t miss sunrise overlooking Monument Valley from Hunts Mesa! Afterwards it’s a leisurely drive across to Page, AZ, stopping off at the slot canyons.

D ay 1 1 - 2 1 Feb ruar y We’ll shoot Horseshoe Bend at sunrise, followed by an afternoon drive to White Pockets Canyon and our last sunset shoot. Drive back to Page for a late meal.

D ay 1 2 - 2 2 Feb ruar y We’ll take our time driving into Las Vegas and the end of our tour!

Inclusions In keeping with our road trip adventure, accommodation is in comfortable lodgings like Best Western Victorian Inn, Yosemite Valley Lodge, Furnace Creek Ranch, Maswick Lodge, View Hotel and the Best Western View at Page. Except of course for our night under the starts in Monument Valley, in which case we will be sleeping in 3-man 3-season tents with one client per tent (unless you want to share). Sleeping bags, sleeping pads, pillows and all camping gear required is provided. In addition, Southwest Adventure Tours is providing the Photographic Counsel with: • Comfortable Transportation • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinners • Park Entrance Fees • Hunts Mesa camping experience • Monument Valley guide • Slot canyon photo tour (TBA) • White Pockets Tour. Tony has also insisted that all tables have a bottle of red wine on them for evening meals as this is conducive to implausible photographic dissertations.

Mono Lake We will drive past Mono Lake and stop to see the tufas if the time and weather are right. It’s also our back-up plan if Bodie is snowed in! Photo: Tony Hewitt.

Why Do So Many Participants Return? There are lots of photography tours and photography workshops. Many of these are presented by friends and colleages of Peter and Tony - and there’s no doubt their guests and students have a great time. But often there is a difference with the photography side. There is only a small number of highly qualified photographers who are not only sociable and friendly, but have a depth of photography experience and knowledge that separates their tuition from the others. It’s not just about knowing ‘stuff’, it’s about having the real-world experiences, of working in the profession, of exhibiting in the art world, and of being able to communicate and share this knowledge with others. Obviously we’re not the only presenters who know their stuff. We work with and recommend Christian Fletcher, Nick Rains, David Oliver, Les Walkling, Michael Coyne, Len Metcalf, Richard White, Mike Langford, Jackie Ranken, Nick Melidonis, Robin Nichols... And Peter and Tony, of course! These photographers have a depth of knowledge that becomes immediately apparent when you engage with them. They are not ‘know-it-alls’, but they do know all about it and so they’re able to present the many different and varied views for your consideration. It’s a skill for passing on their skills. All in a friendly and approachable manner. And we’re told by the photographers who return with us for their third, fourth and fifth workshops that it makes a huge difference.

Yosemite Valley 110mm lens – f11 @ /15 seconds ISO 50 In 2017 we were lucky, following a snow storm into Yosemite. No guarantees - except whatever the weather, we will find great photos here in the Valley!

What Level Photographer Do I Need To Be? To get the most out of this workshop, you should be a reasonably experienced photographer. By this we mean you should have a good grasp of your camera controls, understand how to use the histogram, and be interested in the aesthetics of photography. Naturally, we will help you with all aspects of your photography, but you can learn basic photography on other trips that are less expensive. What Peter and Tony are offering is an insight into how they think and approach the art of photography, and the program is designed to set you up on your own journey of discovery. Hence, to get the most out of it, you should already be familiar with your camera and basic post-production (Photoshop or Lightroom). Then you will be ready to take on board the more advanced concepts and approaches that are a part of the art of photography.

Monument Valley 110mm lens – f11 @ 25 seconds ISO 50 We can all take this shot because it’s from the top of Hunts Mesa - but this isn’t the only opportunity! The panoramas are simply breathtaking! Photo: Peter Eastway.

And of course, we’re also happy to give you any equipment advice you might require.

• Telephoto - 300mm is not too long • Macro lens - lots of close-up stuff • Spare camera battery • Battery Charger • Backpack style camera bag • Tripod (with a quick release plate) • Plenty of storage cards for your camera • Polarising filter • Neutral density filters (0.9x, 4.0x optional)

We do recommend you bring everything you think you might need, but not so much you can’t carry it with you. You will be able to leave equipment behind in the hotels or cars if you don’t want to take it on a particular shoot, but note that leaving equipment in the vehicle while we are away has some risk!
