WORKSHOP/APD At Workshop/APD, an award-winning New York City-based multidisciplinary design and architecture firm, each project is uniquely defined by a sense of place and purpose and a desire to ultimately enhance the user’s experience through exceptional design. From sleek penthouses and seaside retreats to luxury residential developments and groundbreaking hotels and restaurants, the Workshop/APD aesthetic is timelessly modern but site specific, unbound by project type or a singular style. Led by Founding Principals Andrew Kotchen and Matt Berman and Principal Architect Thomas Zoli, a collaborative team of more than 100 architects, interior designers and product designers leverages its vast and highly varied experiences to solve complex design challenges, resulting in spaces that are at once exceptionally beautiful and accessible.

WORKSHOP/APD LUXURY HOSPITALITY
LUXURY, LIFESTYLE, PLACE-BASED & HUMAN CONNECTIONS How can a space shape you? We believe in the power of good design to shape the human experience, from ground-up architecture to our tactile, sculptural bath fixtures. Through a collaborative practice we create luxurious interiors, exteriors and products that spark interaction, exploration, and connection. Our team dives deep for development projects, studying crash points and adjacencies to develop one-of-a-kind amenities and engaging common spaces that build community and drive meaningful interaction. We advance big ideas, committing to design that is ethical, poetic, and of its time. Each design considers the client’s unique needs and desires, the contextual landscape, and the project’s purpose.

CRAFTED MODERN We embrace technology and celebrate craft, bringing materiality and contrast to luxurious modern spaces. “Modern” underscores an innovative, forward thinking approach. “Craft” is an open-minded exploration of the ways that materials and connections can be elevated by transformation and continue to evolve over time. Finished, refined, textured, honed, engineered, joined and detailed: in revealing the hand of the maker we breathe life into the materials of our trade. Subtle variations created by man, machine, time or weather make each project and space unique. There is beauty in socalled “imperfections”, which imbue a decorative, tactile quality and invite investigation and touch, activating a relationship between a space and its inhabitants. This is what gives modern design a soul.

MATT BERMAN Position Education
Founding Principal Bachelor of Art, Architecture Lehigh University, 1994 Master of Architecture Columbia University, 2000
Matt Berman believes passionately in the transformative power of good design. A founding principal at New York City design + architecture firm Workshop/APD, Berman considers the built environment a player and protagonist in its inhabitants’ lives, with the ability to create a mood and catalyze more meaningful interactions and experiences. Since the firm’s inception in 1999, he has encouraged clients to demand more of their spaces, creating modern hotels, restaurants, high-end homes, luxury residential developments and institutional projects that engage the senses and invite inquiry at every scale. Today, he leads Workshop/APD’s growing hospitality practice, setting the scene for an ever-changing cast of characters with spaces that are interactive, engaging and intrinsically tied to their unique locations. Matt’s passion for perfectly imperfect materials and finishes worked by hand, machine or mother nature imbues his work with a timeless, tactile quality and informs the firm’s product development practice. He is known for pursuing technological advances in construction, fabrication, and materials to solve complex design challenges in groundbreaking projects such as Building 92 in Brooklyn’s Navy Yard, which uniquely meshes raw, industrial beauty with sustainable technologies. A formative stint at ANY Magazine made Matt acutely aware of the implications of design at every scale, propelling him from architectural journalism to a career in architecture and design. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Lehigh University and a Master of Architecture from Columbia University and has served as a visiting professor at Pratt Institute. Along with Bernard Tschumi he co-edited Index Architecture (MIT Press, 2003), and hosted the original television series What the Window Washer Saw, about the world’s most iconic skyscrapers. Matt co-authored Workshop/APD Homes: Architecture, Interiors and the Spaces Between (Rizzoli, Fall ’22) along with Workshop/APD co-founder Andrew Kotchen and author Marc Kristal. He resides in Brooklyn, NY and Asbury Park, NJ with his husband, Jim, their son, Owen, and their bulldog, Watson.

Associate Principal Bachelor of Fine Art in Interior Design, Columbus College of Art and Design, 2008 Masters of Architecture, Cranbrook Academy of Art, 2010
Managing Director, Senior Associate Bachelor of Fine Arts, Architecture + Design, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, 2009 Master of Architecture, Spitzer School of Architecture, The City College of New York, 2013
Andrew views the built environment as a communication tool capable of evoking emotions and meaningful human interaction. It is an ethos that drew him to hospitality and retail design early in his career and has guided his later work including luxury residences, multi-family developments and products. As design director and senior associate, he leads a multidisciplinary team of architects, interior designers and product designers working collaboratively across project verticals at every scale. Dedicated to creating a holistic experience, his creative process is guided by the development of a fully-realized conceptual narrative which creates a lens through which all design decisions are filtered, resulting in a unified creative direction from architecture and interiors to furnishings. As a leader, Andrew is known for fostering seamless collaboration, drawing on each team member’s unique skills and experience and pushing the boundaries of design at Workshop/APD to inspire the best outcome. He is passionate about space planning, determining the project’s energy in the initial plan sketch, then realizing that energy through massing, elevation studies and finally color, texture and materiality.
Since joining Workshop/APD in 2015, Michael Luft-Weissberg has advanced through the firm’s ranks to the role of Managing Director, Associate, overseeing the day-to-day communication and coordination of all project details between tradespeople, consultants, contractors and clients. He is passionate about ground-up construction and inspired by the search for technical beauty and clever design solutions. This focus informs his work overseeing complex projects in regions with unique design and regulatory restrictions. Michael is passionate about learning, and in addition to teaching a course on Building Information Modeling (Revit) to graduate students at the City College of New York, he constantly seeks opportunities to educate himself and the Workshop team. He holds a BFA in fine art and design from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and a Master of Architecture from The Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture at the City College of New York.

Though she often dreamed of designing homes as a child, design came later for Fran Fang. With a degree in advertising and marketing from Chinese Culture University in Taiwan and a master’s degree in transportation geography from SUNY Buffalo, she eventually made her way to Pratt Institute to pursue her passion with an interior design degree. In her time at top firms including Wimberly, Tihany and Foster & Partners and in her own practice she has realized restaurant, hotels, and social lounges, relishing the opportunity to create a unique personality and narrative for each project. Fran takes a broad view of every project thanks to her education in geography communications, applying both a contextual and branding lens to a project’s interiors. She enjoys the opportunity to explore project design at all scales at Workshop/APD, where she collaborates with a diverse team of specialists as a single team on residential and hospitality projects. Position Education
Senior Designer Bachelor of Architecture, Drexel University, 2019
Senior Product Designer Bachelor of Entrepreneurship, Appalachian State University, 2004 Master of Fine Art, Furniture Design, Savannah College of Art and Design, 2008
Jeremy Morton applies a unique vision and broad interior architecture and project management experience to his projects at Workshop/APD. With 6-years of experience in high-end residential and hospitality design, he is involved from concept programming, massing and project narrative, to interior architectural design, material selections and branding elements. A native of Maui, Hawaii, Jeremy has always loved New York for its diversity and cultural complexity, which he now examines and incorporates to enrich his designs. Through his interests in art and photography he has learned to absorb his environment and examine every detail, taking a progressive, open minded approach to every project. Jeremy’s work is inviting and liveable, characterized by clean lines and layered curated colors and textures applied to contemporary forms. Jeremy holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Drexel University.
Though he was raised just miles from the American furniture mecca of High Point, North Carolina, Workshop/APD furniture designer Joel Edmondson discovered design through elective courses like woodworking while pursuing a degree in business administration at North Carolina’s Appalachian State University. Location, timing – the media had recently begun to place a broader emphasis on architecture and design – and a newfound passion for furniture converged, leading Joel to SCAD for a master’s degree in fine arts in furniture. Throughout his career, he has applied his business acumen and creativity to produce successful furniture designs at all scales for a wide range of leading trade and consumer brands, both as an in-house designer and in his own practice. Whether it is a luxury gallery piece or a design intended for mass production, Joel is adept at finding the resources necessary to create a unique product that is beautiful and functional, but also efficient and economical. He brings a timeless, modern approach and a reverence for craft to his work, and he particularly enjoys seeing a piece come to life through the process.

EXPERIENCE
WORKSHOP/APD LUXURY HOSPITALITY
Workshop/APD has years of storied success designing forward thinking interiors for high-end residential developments & luxury hotels; from adaptive re-use to ground-up new buildings, Workshop/APD is in the business of creating experiences for the end-users of their properties. For us design is not about aesthetic; it’s about experience. We firmly believe that designing a successful mixed-use property is not about expensive material or finish choices; it is about crafting an experience for the residents & guests to feel an escape from the norm, one that is both comfortable and exciting. Our work is shaped by the locations in which each project is set, and our designs are grounded in context. No two Workshop/APD projects are the same, because no two neighborhoods or development sites are the same. From the coastline of Martha’s Vineyard to the music center of Nashville, Workshop/APD has designed residential developments & hotels for the most challenging locations and code conditions. We have mastered the art of engaging local community boards and civic associations, bringing them on as partners as opposed to adversaries. Our experience has taught us to embrace the challenges of each project as the impetus for innovation & creativity throughout the design process. Having completed multiple residential developments & hotels, both as Architect of Record and as Interior Designer, we understand the level of coordination necessary to bring these jobs to the finish line. We have developed eye catching lobbies, best in class amenity spaces, and sophisticated residences & guestrooms at a variety of price points. Working within the confines of varied budget levels, we understand which design elements make lasting impressions and take pride in our ability to spend allocated dollars where they will have the most impact. Workshop/APD’s projects, products and architectural and design expertise have been highlighted by leading outlets including The New York Times and Wall Street Journal, Elle Décor, Galerie, Interior Design, Hospitality Design and Architectural Digest. The firm has been among Ocean Home magazine’s top 50 coastal designers for the last five years, and received Interior Design Best of Year, NYCxDesign, Architizer A+ and Luxe Interiors + Design RED Awards for its work. The following pages provide a look into our hospitality experience.
