ON THE 1ST THROUGH 7TH DAYS OF CHRISTMAS, GET OUT OF THE HOUSE

R

ight about now, you’ve probably had your fill of “family time.” You’ve watched Grandma drink a glass or two of wine, and you’ve sung all the words to every Christmas song you know. You’ve seen your cousins fight over the wish bone and spun so many dreidels, your wrist is sore. You’ve probably taken some quality naps in an armchair, only to be awoken by a rogue aunt, pinching your cheeks. Togetherness is the reason for the season. But stay in that house with your family too long, and you’re going to go mad. You can’t spend the whole week watching reruns and eating leftovers. Put on some real clothes (with some wiggle room for that holiday tummy) and get out the door this week. Here at Go, we’ve run down just about every fun thing you can do in Omaha for the next seven days. Unless you hate music, movies, beer, dancing, food and fun. In which case, stay in that armchair. The rest of you, keep reading. You’re going to have a crazy fun week. BY ANDREA KSZYSTYNIAK

DAILY DOSE OF HOLIDAY CHEER Museums and other cultural centers have events planned daily during the holidays. When you’ve got a moment to spare, stop in and check these out.

SEE (BUT DON’T EAT) GINGERBREAD HOUSES Exhibits are open each day this week except Christmas in Omaha and Council Bluffs. The 29th Annual Gingerbread Festival at the Mormon Trail Center at Historic Winter Quarters, 3215 State St., is free and open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Christmas Blessings at Kanesville Tabernacle, 222 E. Broadway in Council Bluffs, is free and open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

SKATE UP A STORM If ice skating is your thing, or you like to watch people fall down a lot, head to one of the open ice rinks around town. Most rinks are closed Christmas Day but are open the rest of the week. The ConAgra Foods Ice Rink, on the ConAgra campus at 10th and Harney Streets, is closed today but is open from 1 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday, 1 to 10 p.m. Sunday through Tuesday, and 1 to 5 p.m. New Year’s Eve. The $5 admission fee includes skate rental — and don’t forget to bring nonperishable food and household goods to be collected for the Food Bank for the Heartland.

The University of Nebraska Medical Center ice rink, east of 42nd Street between Emile Street and Dewey Avenue, is also closed today, but is then open 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Tuesday and Wednesday and noon to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Cost is $7, including skate rental; cash or credit (no debit) only. You can also head to the Ralston Arena, 7300 Q St., for $5 public skating, with free skate rental. Hours are Friday and Saturday from noon to 4 p.m., 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, 1 to 4 p.m. Monday, noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday, and 3 to 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve.

TAKE IN CHRISTMAS AT UNION STATION The Durham Museum’s annual holiday tradition includes the Ethnic Holiday Trees Exhibit, which showcases cultures from around the world, and of course the huge Christmas tree, all lit up to oooh and aaah over.

BE BLINDED BY THE LIGHTS

MARVEL OVER TINY TRAINS

The Holiday Light Spectacular is a choreographed blend of light and seasonal music projected onto the Turner Park side of Midtown Crossing’s condominium buildings. The show is at 7 p.m. and runs for approximately 20 minutes. The best area to view the show is in the middle of Turner Park, facing west. For more great light displays, drive through South 24th Street and around the Gene Leahy Mall.

The Union Pacific Railroad Museum, 200 Pearl St. in Council Bluffs, will have a temporary model train exhibit available through Jan. 3. The museum is closed today but will be open 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

DISNEY

RATED PG BOB FISCHBACH movie critic

Into the Woods More than 25 years after composer Stephen Sondheim and script writer James Lapine asked the intriguing question “What happens after happily ever after?” their Broadway musical “Into the Woods” at last reaches the screen. The mashup of fairy-tale plot lines stars Meryl Streep as the witch, Chris Pine as a prince, Emily Blunt as the baker’s wife, Anna Kendrick as Cinderella and Johnny Depp as the big bad wolf. Rob Marshall (“Chicago”) directs. Sondheim reportedly approved Disney script changes to make the musical more familyfriendly, which has fans of the stage version on edge.

FLICK OF THE WEEK 14

ANNIE

A reimagining of the 1977 Broadway musical recasts the redheaded orphan as an African-American foster child. Quvenzhane Wallis charms, as does Jamie Foxx as a cell-phone magnate who learns to care for her. Cameron Diaz, Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale are less gifted at song and dance. 2½ stars

BIG HERO 6

Robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada and his plus-sized inflatable robot Baymax team up with a group of friends to form a band of high-tech heroes.

INTO THE WOODS

A witch tasks a childless baker and his wife with procuring magical items from classic fairy tales to reverse the curse put on their family tree.

NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: SECRET OF THE TOMB

Larry (Ben Stiller) spans the globe, uniting favorite and new characters while embarking on an epic quest to save the magic before it is gone forever.

PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR

The plot is nonsensical,

the action hyperkinetic. But these birds from the Madagascar franchise prove they deserve their own animated feature by being funny. 3 stars

long, sweeping, epic battles and action sequences. The movie leans heavily on digital effects but touches lightly on character development. 2½ stars

Redmayne is a marvel showing the gradual decline of Hawking’s motor control to Lou Gehrig’s disease. Jones’ emotional range is equally impressive. 3 stars

RATED PG-13

THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY — PART 1

RATED R

BIG EYES

True story of Margaret Keane, whose paintings of sad waifs with oversize eyes became a pop art sensation in the early 1960s. Amy Adams is terrific as Margaret, whose bullying and deceptive husband, Walter (Christoph Waltz), takes credit for her work until she learns to stand up for herself. 3 stars

EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS

Director Ridley Scott retells the Old Testament story of Moses (Christian Bale) with eye-popping special effects, including a tsunami parting the Red Sea. But the overlong movie falls short in stirring human-scale emotion and is uninspiring on matters of faith. Joel Edgerton co-stars. 2½ stars

THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES Director Peter Jackson’s third and final installment based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” is all about

No beginning, no end, an unsatisfying story arc. But Jennifer Lawrence is so good in this setup movie to the franchise’s finale, you almost don’t mind. 3 stars

THE GAMBLER

Lit professor and gambler Jim Bennett’s debt causes him to borrow money from his mother and a loan shark. Further complicating things is his relationship with one of his students.

THE IMITATION GAME

A smart script and stellar acting shine in this story of English mathematician and logician Alan Turing, who cracked the Enigma code during World War II. 3½ stars

HORRIBLE BOSSES 2

INTERSTELLAR

Director Christopher Nolan’s overlong sci-fi tale stars Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway as astronauts seeking a new planet to save a dying Earth’s inhabitants. The science is dubious, but McConaughey is terrific. 3 stars

THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING

Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones give two of the best performances of the year as physicist Stephen Hawking and his wife, Jane.

Dale, Kurt and Nick decide to start their own business, but things don’t go as planned because of a slick investor, prompting the trio to pull off a harebrained and misguided kidnapping scheme.

TOP FIVE

A comedian tries to make it as a serious actor when his reality-TV star fiancée talks him into broadcasting their wedding on her TV show.

UNBROKEN

Jack O’Connell is memorable as Olympic athlete Louis Zamperini, a bombardier on a WWII plane that crashes into the sea in this true story. Zamperini survives 47 days in a raft, only to land for two years

in a cruel Japanese prison camp. Angelina Jolie directs this well-crafted picture.

WILD

Reese Witherspoon’s gritty performance as a lone hiker on the Pacific Crest Trail is Oscar bait. Based on the memoir by Cheryl Strayed, who made the 1,100-mile trek after her mother died and her life fell apart. Flashbacks scramble the timeline somewhat. Contains nudity, drug use, sexual content and language. 3½ stars

UNRATED THE BABADOOK

A single mother plagued by the violent death of her husband battles with her son’s fear of a monster lurking in the house, but she soon discovers a sinister presence all around her.

HAPPY VALLEY

A documentary that observes the year after Pennsylvania State University assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky’s arrest on child sex abuse charges.

PK

A stranger known by the initials P.K. asks unusual questions in this Indian family drama.

THE WINNER Midtown Crossing

KERRY’S WINTER SOLSTICE

Grane’s entry will keep you warm during the cold winter months You saw. You drank. You voted. And you named Kerry’s Winter Solstice the winner of our 12 Cheers holiday cocktail tournament. The whiskey craft cocktail at Grane, 120 S. 31st Ave. in Midtown Crossing, is perfect for the cold winter months. “We developed it as we dream of longer days and warmer places,” said Grane owner Dan Matuszek, who named the cocktail after his wife. “We wanted to make it aspirational.” It mixes warm weather flavors from lemon juice, coconut water and a housemade banana liqueur with a wintry mix of allspice liqueur and Henry McKenna Bottled-in-Bond 10-Year Bourbon. It’s topped with a sprinkle of fresh, shaved nutmeg.

Ingredients

“I wanted to give it that warm tropical feel, but not too citrusy,” said head bartender Devon Mundt. Kerry’s Winter Solstice is based off of a whiskey sour, but it lacks the supersweetness or heavy flavor of its simpler counterpart. A sip of the drink is smooth and sweet with a little light spice. It has become the most popular cocktail at the bar behind Grane’s on-tap Old-Fashioned. Bartenders poured nearly 150 in one night last weekend. Though Grane recently made a few changes to its craft cocktail menu, which it does a few times a year, Kerry’s Winter Solstice remains on the menu alongside about a dozen other cocktails.

1½ oz. Henry McKenna Bottled-in-Bond 10 Year Bourbon ½ oz. roasted coconut water ¾ oz. lime ½ oz. banana purée ½ oz. Bitter Truth pimento dram

Directions

Place all ingredients over ice in a shaker, and shake until it’s too cold to hold. Strain into a coupe glass and garnish with freshly grated nutmeg. Enjoy, the Winter Solstice is upon us!
