"With the emergence of COVID-19 last year, public health systems across MENA were overwhelmed as they responded to the pandemic and tried to care for patients with non-COVID diseases. The challenges, like that of other countries, reflected not only health system preparedness but also issues associated with, among others, leadership, public communication programs, availability and quality of data, and ability to make the most use of technology to gather information and contain the spread of the virus. The question is why MENA’s public health system couldn’t adequately meet the needs for fighting the pandemic, beyond the shared constraints all countries had; and why MENA’s public health system continues to be strained.
The pandemic hit MENA countries at a bad time, certainly. Many countries in the region began 2020 with chronic low growth, persistent macroeconomic imbalances, and governance challenges, including a lack of data and transparency. The region’s emerging recovery in 2021 will be uneven, and
