3 PRIVATE COLLECTIONS Thanks to the success of our recent auctions, we have been able to draw material from some particularly important sources. We are proud to announce that our November sale will include offerings from the following :

THE DURAND-DESSERT COLLECTION (PARIS). Collectors of world renown, they have consigned some extremely interesting artworks from Nigeria and Cameroon, including an important Eket altar sculpture from Nigeria and a mindblowing Kum mask from Cameroon. THE CHRISTOPHE EVERS COLLECTION (BRUSSELS). An active collector widely known for his interest in Nigeria, he has provided an excellent group of sculptures that include a fine Mama terracotta and an expressive wooden figural sculpture from the same culture. THE GUIDO POPPE COLLECTION (ANTWERP). One of world’s most prolific collectors of African knives will offer some particularly rare and special items from his collection.

Hopi "Katchina" of the Black Ogre USA Arizona Hopi Mid 20th century H. 21 cm Light wood, feathers, cloth and leather Small doll representing a Hopi dancer wearing a mask. With his beady eyes and large mouth, the Black Ogre (Nata-aska) comes to the dances whipping his saw to scare the children. The Ogres are known to eat children so the kids run around trying to stay away while the Ogres give chase, threatening to consume them in their large clapping jaws. Cocoon jar CHINA Han dynastie Han (206 BC - 220 AD) H. 25 x 28 cm Terracotta Well preserved jar which contained silk cocoons. These jars were buried with the deceased as a gift to the gods of the afterlife. There are still remains of the original decoration made with mineral pigments. Kuba "Ikul" sword DR CONGO Kuba Bushoong End of 19th to early 20th century H. 37 cm Iron and wood Less common type of "Ikul" short sword with a round shaped end. Hand forged iron fit into a wooden handle with a lot wear and smooth patina. The top of the wooden handle shows a small sun, indicating that this piece comes from the Royal court. Kumu mask DR CONGO Kumu First half of the 20th century H. 43 cm Wood, kaolin Typical large size and light wood mask from the Kumu people. The Kumu are living in the North Easthern Congo. Kumu masks are amongst the most important objects to their culture. They are used by the Nkunda society of sorcerers who call upon primordial ancestors for purposes of social control. Kwere sorcerer staff TANZANIA Kwere Early 20th century H. 144 cm Wood and glass beads Exceptional staff with a beautiful small maternity figure on top. Around the shaft of the staff is a snake biting the leg of a frog. These staffs were used during circumcision rites. Thick crusty patina all over. Provenance: Belgian private collection, field collected in 1980 Condition: intact some glass beads were lost in time (comes with a base)

These pipe stoppers were worn by women around their neck on a glass beads string. Provenance: Portugese private collection Condition: the brass shell hosing is missing ( no base )

First half of the 20th century H. 62 cm Bi-colored hard wood, aluminium Elegant staff with an impressive antelope head as finial with aluminum inlaid eyes.
