Travelling in winter can be a headache – icy roads, warming up your car in the morning, and slow traffic on the roads. Who wants to fly in such weather? You might find it surprising but traveling by air in winter can be one of the best times of the year. Cold, fresh air transforms the landscape: bluish natural light creates deep blue shadows and the scenery is accented by intense golden highlights. Even known routes can provide some of the most scenic winterscapes. Snow, ice and cold temperatures might cause a shiver-inducing pre-flight, but you probably won’t face the dangerous flying hazards characteristic in warm weather like thunderstorms. Another positive aspect of winter flying is air density. Due to colder and therefore denser air you will experience better engine performance and airlift. Since the engines produce more power when they take off in cold air and the wings generate higher amount of lift, your plane will take off in a shorter distance and climb

faster. The cold air also improves your vision — you’ll see more clearly and further away than usual.

Cold Air is OK! Turbine and internal combustion/reciprocating piston engines all run more efficiently in cold air because colder air allows the engine to use a greater mass of air/fuel mixture in the same intake volume, generating more thrust and power. If you fly a propeller-driven plane, due to higher air density the propeller will thrust a greater mass of air backwards and therefore generate more power. This has a positive effect on acceleration and your airplane will reach its target altitude faster. You will also experience reduced take-off roll, more lift, and you will be able to take off at a lower ground speed. So, no need to limit yourself. Get to know an other side of your aircraft. Explore the picturesque winter scenery.

Here are our top tips for you to have a safe winter trip and enjoy your flight:

1 2

BE EQUIPPED FOR WINTER.

surfaces’ specially designed shapes, reducing drastically the amount of lift generated. This may not only prevent you from take-off, but could also alter the aerodynamic balance of the controls and potentially render the aircraft uncontrollable. On this account make sure you use a proper de-icing system that removes snow, frost and ice completely from your aircraft before you take off!

Before you conquer the sky, your aircraft needs to be ready for winter. Install winter baffles, remove wheel pants and don’t forget the right oil. Check the condition of your hoses, fittings and seals. Inspect your battery since that tends to suffer in cold weather. Ensure that your cabin heater is safe to use. Carbon monoxide is one of the most common source of accidents in winter.

DON’T RUSH YOUR PRE-FLIGHT INSPECTION ROUTINE. Be very mindful when it comes to your preflight routine. Your winter pre-flight will (and should!) take longer than it does when you plan to fly in summer. So, dress warmly for your walk-around. If you get cold for the walk-around you aren’t dressed properly for your trip! Since instruments and buttons tend to be sensitive to cold temperatures, don’t tune your radios before they are warm and the electrical power is stabilised. Check your tyres: they may lose pressure when the temperature drops. In winter, all kind of small animals seek a warm, dry place, making the room under the engine cowling of your aircraft especially inviting to them.

5

BE PREPARED FOR EMERGENCY SITUATIONS. It can happen to everybody. You may be the most cautious pilot, but unfortunately sometimes things don’t go the way we have planned. Imagine for a moment that you are in an emergency situation. Dress to survive and make sure your passengers do too! Help may take a long time to arrive in dreadful weather conditions and it will feel even longer if you are dressed for warmer temperatures. Your cell phone should always be charged fully before departure. It’s a good idea to have some fresh batteries for your flash light, since it gets dark pretty quickly in the winter months. To be on the safe side, always file a flight plan! That way your disappearance will be noticed even in case your emergency beacon is damaged and doesn’t operate.

your route near roads and that way you won’t be stranded in the wilderness in case of emergency. This is especially important since the days are much shorter in winter than they are in summer. You don’t want to be stranded out there in the dark.

8 9

PREHEAT YOUR AIRCRAFT. If your plane is out in the elements, you need to preheat the engine and the cockpit. If your engine is too cold, it is hard to turn, which puts undue strain on the starter and battery. During engine start, over-priming can cause excess fuel in the induction system — creating a fire hazard. Also, over-priming during cold starts can cause the spark plugs to foul out and can scour oil from the cylinder walls causing poor compression. Use common sense and make sure the heater and the cords are in good condition before preheating. A faulty preheater can have catastrophic consequences. Also, never fuel the plane while the heater is on to avoid fire hazard.

DON’T GET SLOPPY IN YOUR DE-ICING. Planes are one of the most amazing creations man has created but they aren’t designed to fly with ice or snow on the outside body. Even a quarter-inch-thick layer of ice on a plane can disrupt the air flow over and around the wings’ and tail

4 GA BUYER EUROPE NOVEMBER 2021

6 7

TAKE IT EASY ON THE RUNWAY. Avoid sharp turns and hard braking to prevent sliding sideways on hard-packed or icy surfaces in crosswind conditions. Takeoff in winter calls for an accurate assessment of your engine power, especially with turbo or supercharged engines. During climb-out monitor the cylinder-head temperatures. You may need to climb at a faster airspeed due to winter baffling. Still try not to over-boost!

KEEP WEATHER CONDITIONS IN MIND WHILE FLYING. Be meticulous about your weather briefing! Winter weather conditions tend to be volatile, so pay particular attention to storm patterns and potential problems at both your departure and destination, as well as on your planned route. Don’t be overconfident: if you face risky or dangerous snow, wind or ice, abort the flight as soon as possible. Aviation statistics are filled with cases failing this essential mindfulness. If you can, choose

10

MAINTAIN A WARM ENGINE DURING DESCENT. Watch out for signs of carburretor icing (“Carb Ice”) while the plane is descending. Don’t be afraid to carry a little more power during your descent and use your landing gear and/or flaps for controlling the speed. Be careful, blowing snow and ice fog can form quickly in winter. You can plan an alternate landing side just in case.

CONSIDER YOUR OPTIONS FOR LANDING. If you have more options, go for a busier airport. Airports with higher air traffic tend to be better equipped for winter weather. What’s more, pilots have the chance to interact with each other and pass on useful information like landing and runway conditions. Remember to share your experience too! Before landing look for your options, and pay attention to snow drifts and other obstacles. Keep in mind that your brakes can be pretty obsolete on a frozen runway! After engine shut-down, turn off the fuel and run the carburretor dry to reduce the fire hazard during your next engine heating.

DON’T FORGET YOUR POSTFLIGHT CHECKS! You have arrived. Safe and sound. Great job! However, if you think you are finished, you are quite mistaken. Top off your fuel tanks to minimise water condensation. If you fuel your aircraft from cans or barrels, you should filter the fuel before going into your tank, or use a clean and dry chamois filter to avoid water contamination. Install engine and wing covers and control locks.

If you follow these safety tips, your winter flying will be a carefree experience opening up brand new perspectives and offering magical landscapes transformed by snow, frost and low sunlight.

COLLINS AEROSPACE GOODRICH DE-ICING ®

A GUIDE TO DE-ICE

With 12 easy-to-reach locations throughout Europe, Collins Aerospace Goodrich De-icing Authorised Service Centers give you

BOOT MAINTENANCE Unlike engines and other mechanical systems – where maintenance is often scheduled based on flight hours – de-ice boots can be subject to wear or damage whether an aircraft is in the air, on the tarmac or even in a hangar. This means the boots used in pneumatic de-icing systems require ongoing attention and care. A critical factor in maintaining the de-icing system is a regular schedule of inspection, repair and/or replacement. De-ice boot inspections should be performed before and after every flight. After landing, wash the boots with mild soap and warm water to remove insects and other debris before it dries. After boots are cleaned and dried, perform a visual inspection for damage of any kind. It is relatively easy to detect even minor surface imperfections by looking along the length of the boot’s leading edge under a good reflecting light source. “Damage should be repaired immediately per Goodrich ATA 30-10-31 as unrepaired surface damage can lead to ingress of water into the deicing system, ultimately creating further costly damage to internal components such as valves and sensors. Additionally, unrepaired damage limits proper function of the de-icer itself, decreasing effective ice shed,” said Molly Stibaner, senior product support engineer with Collins Aerospace Goodrich De-icing.

REPAIR KITS Collins Aerospace Goodrich Deicing offers repair kits that are specially developed to repair damage while still allowing for the proper inflation and ice shed of the deicer. Patch repair kit P/N 74-451-AA can be used to repair damage up to 4 inches by 9 inches provided that the damage does not extend through the bondside fabric layer, broken stitch or thread. Pinhole (1/16” diameter or smaller) repairs can be completed using pinhole repair kit P/N 74-451-AE.

access to factory trained de-icing systems specialists capable of providing dedicated inspection, repair and installation services.

DE-ICE BOOT CARE

ROUTINE MAINTENANCE

While physical damage to pneumatic de-ice boots can happen at any time, most age-related deterioration affecting longevity or reducing de-icing performance can be forestalled by proper preventive maintenance. In addition to frequent cleaning and inspection, regular preventive maintenance consists largely of using manufacturer-approved care products. These treatments protect the de-icer materials from ozone damage, reduce cosmetic UV fading and often enhance the performance of the de-icer. By identifying problems early and implementing immediate repairs or boot replacement, the airworthiness of the aircraft can be assured.

Regular maintenance is key to preventing permanent marks, especially from bugs. Because bugs are acidic, when left on the de-icer, they begin to attack the material. Goodrich Aerospace Cleaner™ (P/N 74-451238-32) and Goodrich Aerospace Protectant™ (P/N 74-451-237-32) can be used daily to clean the de-icers to prevent stains from occurring.

AgeMaster® #1 (P/N 74-451-127) is a rubber preservative developed to protect de-ice boots from ozone damage. It is recommended to be applied every six months or 150 flight hours, beginning six months after the de-icer is installed. It is important to note that this product can only be used on neoprene de-icers. ShineMaster™ (P/N 74-451-179) is a cosmetic product that can be used on all Collins Aerospace Goodrich de-icers to provide a high lustre shine. ShineMaster Prep (P/N 74451-178), the cleaner designed to remove previously applied coats of ShineMaster, is also a beneficial product to clean and restore the de-icer back to its natural rubber state. ICEX®II is an ice adhesion inhibitor, which enhances de-icer performance. Making it harder for ice to build-up on the de-icer surface and easier to shed off, ICEX II can be applied every 50 flight hours during icing season or as needed.

The application and proper maintenance of conductive edge sealer is another key step in preventing premature failure of your pneumatic de-icers as well as costly damage to internal components. The surface materials used in most Collins Aerospace Goodrich pneumatic de-icers are conductive, but they require the presence of the correct conductive edge sealer for proper static dissipation by completing the path of least resistance to the airframe. Lack of properly maintained conductive edge sealer is the main cause of pinhole damage, which leads to ingress of water into your deicing system. “To better serve our customers, Collins Aerospace has established a vast network of Authorised Goodrich Deicing Service Centers,” said Jeremy Henry, senior program manager with the Collins Aerospace Goodrich De-icing Authorised Service Center Network. “With multiple easy to reach locations throughout the world, Collins Aerospace Goodrich Deicing Authorised Service Centers give customers access to factory trained de-icing system specialists capable of providing dedicated inspection, repair and installation services.” I

The allowable number of patch repairs is shown in the figure (right). There can also be no more than 20 pinholes repairs made in a 12” square. Patches have a one-way stretch across the width of the patch to allow for inflation. The patch must be installed with the length panel parallel to the de-icer tubes as shown in the image below. Failure to do so may result in the patch lifting when the de-icers are inflated.

EUROPEAN ROTORS 2021

Helicopter Offshore Operations: Supporting the World’s Energy Needs Helicopters are an indispensable tool for the oil and gas industry in supplying offshore platforms. Flying in all weather conditions over vast distances over water is a challenge for crews and aircraft. New technologies are helping to make it safer and safer. With the supply of wind farms, a new and promising chapter has been added to the offshore segment.

Rotorcraft are providing support for offshore oil and gas exploration for nearly 75 years now. The first helicopter missions for the oil industry were flown with Bell 47s in the late 40s, providing transport for oil exploration crews in the swamps of Louisiana. Since then, the payload, speed and range of helicopters have increased dramatically as has the demand for offshore missions. Oil and gas rigs are now located hundreds of miles from the coast in deep water. All over the world, helicopters are in operation for the oil and gas industry, in the Gulf of Mexico, Brazil, Thailand, Vietnam, China, the Philippines and the Far East of Russia. But nowhere are as many helicopters operating in this segment as in the North Sea. Helicopters here transport around two million passengers a year to and from oil and gas production platforms from 16 bases. The largest one is in Aberdeen in Scotland, from where around half a million workers and engineers fly to their jobs each year. But helicopters also take off from Norway, Denmark, the UK and the Netherlands on supply flights for production platforms.

Leonardo Helicopters offers a broad range of rotorcraft for the oil and gas industry © Leonardo Helicopters

The most popular helicopter types for these missions are Sikorsky’s S-92, Leonardo’s AW139 and AW189, and Airbus Helicopters’ H175. The H160 is about to enter into service in this segment in the near future.

Demanding Environment According to Leonardo Helicopters, the offshore industry is one of the most demanding in terms of helicopter capabilities, both technical and operational. When such requirements are driving the development of a product, the result is a wide market success: this is the case with the AW139, the backbone of the global offshore helicopter fleet. The other members of the AW family, the AW169 and AW189, have been developed accordingly and have enjoyed considerable market success respectively in the offshore wind and oil & gas markets. The offshore helicopter market has seen its ups and downs. Flying activities have traditionally been fluctuating with oil and gas prices, leaving operators with a drop or increase in demand by as much as 30 percent from one year to the next.

Safety Focus Safety is paramount in offshore operations. New technologies allow rotorcraft to expand their mission profiles by enhancing reliability and capabilities, despite the often challenging conditions under which the aircraft are operating. Airbus Helicopters received EASA certification for its Rig’N Fly system (Rig Integrated GPS approaches with eNhanced Flyability and safety) in 2017 for its H175 super medium helicopter. This avionics upgrade enhances the H175’s offshore mission capability providing fully automatic rig approaches. The automated mode also reinforces flight safety by allowing the crew to focus on the flight parameters and the external environment. Rig’N Fly uses a combination of sensors (GPS, barometric altimeter, radar altimeter, weather radar, etc.) to provide enhanced flight precision and situational awareness for automatic rig approaches. The system also includes offset approaches, which can be tailored according to weather conditions and oil rig environment for the safest, standardised approach, placing the helideck in the easiest position for the crew to fly. By providing a repeatable path computation, the ability to couple the Automatic Flight Control System along with the flexibility to take environmental elements into account, Rig’N Fly reduces the workload of the crew, while enhancing situational awareness.

10 HELICOPTER BUYER EUROPE NOVEMBER 2021

The H175 upgraded avionics suite also includes advances in the Synthetic Vision System — offering a better display resolution and decluttering capability — and in the Helicopter Terrain Avoidance System, which optimises crew alerting time. Also, approach-deviation alerts have been improved while enhancement of the maintenance functions and associated ground tools allow for better detection of failures and simplification of data downloading.

Bell Textron is offering its largest and most capable helicopter, the Bell 525, for the oil and gas industry, too. Certification of Bell’s new flagship is expected soon. In September 2021, Bell Textron unveiled its new 525 Experience Center at Stavanger Airport in Norway, one of the epicentres of the North Sea oil & gas industry. The 525 Experience Center is an innovative space designed to showcase the Bell 525 capabilities for customers in Norway who perform missions in oil and gas, search and rescue (SAR), and military operations (see also page 12). Bell sees Norway as a key market and is proud to establish a presence there. The 525 is Bell’s first commercial helicopter with a fly-by-wire system and it’s first helicopter with a five-blade main rotor. Bell has partnered with its Independent Representative (IR), Norwegian Aviation & Defense Group, in country, to establish this facility. The centre is located inside a hangar and displays the 525 mock-up with interactive workstations for potential customers to learn more about the aircraft and its capabilities. Last year, Bell announced a collaboration agreement with Norwegian oil and gas operator Wintershall Dea Norge AS to bring enhanced helicopter operational safety to the North Sea. Bell’s involvement with Wintershall has helped develop a new standard of innovation in the oil and gas industry and North Sea operations.

within the next 20 years. With increasing wind turbine output and thus higher electricity production, the operators of wind turbines are dependent on an efficient logistics system with high availability in order to keep losses due to incidents low. New wind farms are being built at ever greater distances from the shore. A helicopter can cover 40 nautical miles (74 kilometres) in 20 minutes and is thus faster at the site and back on land than a transport ship. A crew is therefore able to maintain more turbines a day by using a helicopter as means of transport than by using a ship.

Windfarm Growth A new and promising segment for offshore helicopter operators is offshore windfarms. In 2018, only 30 helicopters were in use in this segment; today, there are about 100 helicopters worldwide flying technicians to windfarms in coastal waters. In 2018, Airbus Helicopters published a study which identified a market for nearly 1,000 helicopters in this segment

In 2020, the crews of the rescue helicopters in the North Sea and Baltic Sea completed 254 training hours for winch manoeuvres on wind turbines, platforms, and vessels. A total of 1,146 flight hours were reported for the past year for offshore rescue missions, exercises, and other rescue missions.

European Rotors Offshore helicopter operations are an important topic at EUROPEAN ROTORS - The VTOL Show and safety conference in Cologne, Germany in November. On Tuesday, November 16, there will be a dedicated conference hosted by Leonardo Helicopters, where utilisation of helicopter, RPAS and UAS operations to support the renewable energy industry, providing opportunities for growth and collaboration are to be discussed. In the afternoon of the same day Leonardo also has organised a dedicated workshop for safe operations at offshore windfarms.

The Bell 525 is designed to be the best-in-class aircraft expected to support operations in Norway and revolutionise the oil and gas transport industry. It is anticipated to be the first commercial fly-by-wire (FBW) helicopter to be certified. This design architecture reduces pilot workload, increases pilot situational awareness and improves the aircraft’s handling qualities. The Bell 525 also is expected to support both Wintershall Dea’s and Textron’s sustainability objectives by consuming 30 percent less fuel per hour of operation than the heavy class helicopters that fly offshore today on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.

Every offshore rescue helicopter is equipped with the state-of-the art emergency medical equipment to treat and monitor patients. The flying crew consists of two pilots as well as a winch operator, and the medical crew consists of an emergency doctor as well as an emergency paramedic.

Offshore wind farms are a promising market for helicopter operators. © Anthony Pecchi Airbus Helicopters

Providing medical assistance to offshore wind farms is another important service which can only be done in a timely manner by helicopter. For more than ten years, NHC Northern Helicopter – a DRF Stiftung Luftrettung non-profit AG (DRF Luftrettung) company – based in Emden, Germany, has specialised in acute and emergency medical care as well as the transport of injured and sick people from offshore wind farms in both the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.

EUROPEAN ROTORS - The VTOL show and safety conference is where the entire rotorcraft industry meets to grow its business and discuss rotorcraft safety and sustainability. For the first time, the European Helicopter Association (EHA) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) are teaming up to create an exceptional showcase for the European rotorcraft community. The venue will be Hall 8 including the Congress Centre North of Koelnmesse in Cologne, Germany. EUROPEAN ROTORS will be the unique leading platform offering the industry an exhibition where all stakeholders including Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), suppliers and operators gather to do business and share knowledge. Vertical Take-Off and Landing aircraft (VTOL) with different level of autonomy will also be integrated, as they are an important future technology – either complementary to rotorcraft or offering new dimensions — for instance, in urban environments. More than 140 exhibitors including market leaders such as Airbus Helicopters, Bell, Leonardo Helicopters, Robinson, Safran Helicopter Engines, Boeing Global Services, StandardAero, H+S Aviation Limited, Pratt & Whitney Canada Corp, RUAG, ESG Elektroniksystem- und Logistik GmbH, AEROMETALS and others have already registered for the mustattend event from November 16 to 18.

“There were many highlights on the trip, but some of the most memorable were seeing the icebergs in Greenland, volcanoes and waterfalls in Iceland and the Alps in Switzerland.” “I’ve been a pilot for 13 years, and a transatlantic flight is something I’ve always wanted to do. It would not have been easily done without the IFR kit,” added Lunov. “The Bell 407GXi is a remarkable helicopter that provided a safe and enjoyable trip. With the IFR kit, we had no weather limitations and it allowed us to proceed with the planned route without any delays.” On Friday, 24 September, Bell and Heliclub hosted a customer demonstration event at the Mayachok Yacht Club, where the 407GXi was on display along with a Bell 505 and Bell 429. “The Bell 407 aircraft has played an essential role in critical missions for more than 25 years,” stated Bell Textron. “The aircraft sets a high standard for singleengine aircraft with its unmatched reliability and performance in hot, high or maritime environments.” I

CLOSE BROTHERS.qxp_GAB Master LEFT 08/10/2021 13:04 Page 1

Ian Halliday, Aviation Sales Director at Close Brothers Aviation and Marine, sheds some light on his role and explains how borrowing in the aviation sector works in the current environment. Tell me more about yourself and your background in aviation I have more than 15 years’ experience in the aviation sector, with the majority of my time spent on aircraft finance. I’ve also been a director of a UK helicopter operator and account manager for Royal Ascot and Silverstone major event heliports. In addition, I’ve repossessed aircraft from abroad on behalf of administrators and valued and inspected aircraft on behalf of banks – and I’ve even had a go at flying a few aircraft.

Is there such a thing as a ‘typical deal’? Every deal is different – a saying that’s commonly used, but also incredibly accurate. With the number of variables involved, such as loan size, aircraft type and the client’s credit profile, it’s impossible to have a typical deal, they really are all different. We have customers ranging from first-time owners who have just got their licence, to large scale commercial operators flying HEMS or offshore support missions. We can lend in various currencies, to best fit the customer’s cashflows versus the purchase, operating costs, and likely residual value when it comes to sell.

Tell me about deal sizes and running costs… Our sweetspot is between £1 -£10m, but that’s not to say we can’t do smaller or larger deals – which we do. We start with loans of around £100k. As part of our due diligence, on every deal we take into

account the running costs of the aircraft being purchased, ensuring we understand upcoming maintenance along with how much it costs to fly the aircraft on an hourly basis, and the expected annual utilisation. Utilisation and ongoing maintenance are key drivers of value so we make sure that they are understood by all parties from the outset.

Aviation can be seen as a wealthy person’s pursuit – is this true? Aviation is typically split into several categories when talking about an aircraft’s use, the first of which is leisure flying, where it’s someone’s passion, hobby and business combined. Depending on what you fly — and how often — costs do not have to be prohibitive. Secondly, there’s private aviation, where an aircraft is used for business purposes. Time is money – and private aviation certainly saves you time, although this doesn’t have to be in a brand-new corporate helicopter or aircraft. We have plenty of customers who have moved from charter to ownership, often purchasing a preowned aircraft or helicopter as a first step. We also have a large number of mission-specific aircraft in the portfolio, for example air ambulances, crew transfer or survey aircraft. These are genuine revenue-generating workhorses and tend to see higher utilisation than leisure or business aircraft.

What has been the impact of COVID-19 ? While this has undoubtedly been a disruptive time for all, and aviation in particular, I’m delighted to say we’re currently

WIR SPRECHEN DEUTSCH - ASTRID AYLING: +44 (0)208 549 5024 - Astrid@avbuyer.com

receiving record numbers of new business enquires from both new and existing clients. We have a number of new clients who have decided to either learn to fly as a timesaving business decision, or simply to follow their passion for flying. Flying a light aircraft or helicopter to get from one end of the UK to the other has the reward of saving time while getting you there in comfort and also away from large crowds at commercial airports, railway stations or busy motorways — something that our customers increasingly value.

What do you think the future holds for the aviation team? We are going to keep doing what we do well while ensuring our customer service standards are maintained. The beauty of Close Brothers is we don’t panic in a crisis – Covid-19 is an example of this because we didn’t change our lending stance and didn’t shut our doors. With this attitude, the future of the team is stable and we will continue to support our customers throughout the economic cycle.

What sets Close Brothers Aviation and Marine apart? That’s an easy one! It’s our ability to get a deal done. We are a team of dedicated individuals with a real passion for what we do, and our customers appreciate that. We pride ourselves on being able to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ very quickly, and when we say ‘yes’, our in-house team has the ability to transact a deal more quickly than anyone else. Combine that with real expertise and a common-sense approach and you have a compelling offering.

NOVEMBER 2021

The Leading Edge of Search & Rescue Operations: AERIAL WORK HELICOPTERS What does a rescue helicopter sound like to a victim when approaching? “Joy, Reassurance, Hope?” Suppose you want to know how Search and Rescue (SAR) helicopters bring relief to victims and their families. In that case, Patrick Ryan highlights the unique elements of this critical lifesaving operation and how the helicopter gets the job done. Without a doubt, the introduction of helicopters in the 1940s dramatically changed the reach and power of search and rescue work. Search and rescue (SAR) operations that were once limited by rescuers’ ability to traverse or navigate rugged terrain or conditions, environments sufficiently dangerous to create a need for rescue, can be brought quickly into action from the sky. With this, the helicopter brings unparalleled versatility to support emergency and disaster response compared to other aircraft types. To better understand this critical operation and how the helicopter plays a significant role in saving lives, defining or linking the SAR mission, specific helicopter SAR tasks, and the capabilities they bear in such operations is vital to comprehend the importance of SAR and the helicopter fully.

Mission First, what is SAR? The overarching mission of SAR is to locate, stabilise and extract individuals in distress. That can mean a hiker on the side of a mountain, a sailor lost at sea, a trapped urban disaster survivor, a captured soldier, or an Alzheimer’s patient wandering city streets. Each area of SAR employs techniques specific to the circumstance. Specifically, search and rescue is an operation mounted by emergency services, often well-trained personnel, to find someone believed to be suffering, lost, sick, or injured either in a remote or difficult to access area, such as mountains, desert or forest, or at sea.

By Patrick Ryan

These sub-fields are defined as: •. Mountain Rescue • Land Search and Rescue / Wilderness Search and Rescue • Urban/Suburban Search and Rescue • Air-Sea Rescue / Maritime Search and Rescue • Air Search and Rescue When it comes to helicopters in the world of SAR, hands-down helicopters are the ideal capability to support across the spectrum of SAR operations (or should I say sub-fields) the ability to be at the ‘right place’ at the ‘right time’. To achieve this, the SAR helicopter performs many specialised tasks that are distinctive compared to other SAR platforms.

The field of Search and Rescue includes two entirely different types of operations. The first is strictly a military mission that demands potential flights into hostile areas, i.e., Combat Search & Rescue (CSAR). The second type involves supporting the civil sector in non-combat situations. For example, civil SAR might include rescuing the crews of overturned pleasure craft boats, highway tragedies, flood relief, skyscraper fires, aircraft crashes, etc.

So, what type of task or operations do SAR helicopter crews and systems perform? Overall, the SAR helicopter sector’s tasks vary from supporting a secondary role to conducting the actual search and physical extraction of a victim.

Additionally, specialised sub-fields, typically determined by the type of terrain the search is conducted over, have their unique focus, capabilities, training, and deployment. Even though these specialised areas are defined or organised as such, many overlap in their efforts to save a person or persons in distress.

Not all SAR helicopters can accomplish all the different types of tasks. It depends on the mission, environmental conditions, capabilities of the helicopter (platform and equipment), and the type of training or certification the crew maintains. However, some of the main menu-board tasks or techniques SAR helicopters are utilised for, or conduct, is:

Support •

Scouting or Reconnaissance – Access the conditions of search areas.

Information or Intelligence – Collect and provide an aerial view to inform and improve ground/sealevel searches or accessing stranded individuals.

Command & Control – Directing SAR operations on-site.

SAR Team Transportation – Airlifting SAR ground or sea personnel and equipment to the incident area.

Hasty Search - Move quickly through the search area, at slow speeds, to check cliffs, wells, tangle hazards, caves, sea oil spills, last know locations, etc. Grid Search – Methodically searching an area using a coordinate system of boxes defined by Latitude/longitude or UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator) coordinates, i.e., carefully looking for the victim, victims, or clues to their whereabouts. Choke Point Search – Maintaining constant search or observation of a geographical choke point where a victim has a high probability of crossing if mobile, e.g., a large river with a bridge crossing, etc.

Rescue •

Specialised Landings – Conduct high-risk landings such as Slop Landings, One-Skid Landings, Toe-In Landings, Hover Landings, and Power-On Landing.

Specialized Aerial Assistance & Extraction Rescues – Perform insertion or extraction of rescuers and victims utilizing Hoisting, Rappelling, and Short-Haul (suspended on a line and transported to a safe landing zone.) operations or techniques.

Casualty or Victim Transportation - Providing effective medical care to a rescued victim while transporting to a relay MEDEVAC aircraft or other medical support facilities/teams.

Capabilities What kind of helicopters and equipment are used in SAR operations? First, helicopters are one of the most useful SAR platforms for many reasons: •

Agility – SAR helicopter's variable speed and ability to hover make them the most effective platform for targeting smaller areas and performing close-up operations over land and water obstacles.

22 AERIAL WORK EUROPE NOVEMBER 2021

Endurance – SAR helicopters can fly for several hours and hundreds of miles at a time, so they can cover regional distances quickly and perform hours of rescue operations without needing to refuel.

Ceiling

Maximum speed

Rate of climb

As mentioned before, today’s SAR helicopters, such as the traditional WS-61 Sea King, provide an enormous benefit in search and rescue missions where every minute and second counts. If you want to know what is flying today, here is a list of SAR helicopters that are operated around the world by both civilian and military organizations: Light-Weight Helicopters:

Ruggedness – SAR helicopters are designed to brave the elements and remain stable in heavy crosswinds and moderately threatening climates.

Airbus H145

AgustaWestland AW109

Airbus MH-65 Dolphin

Capacity – SAR helicopters are capable of carrying thousands of pounds of food, water, and supplies.

Sikorsky S-76

Bell CH-146 Griffon

Advanced – SAR helicopters are typically outfitted with the necessary avionics, sensors, and equipment to support effective search and rescue and recovery operations.

Medium-Weight Helicopters:

Search •

Reach – SAR helicopter's ability to land in remote places and operate from ships enables them to aid survivors long before ground or maritime units arrive. In addition, their size, power, and responsiveness mean they can operate well in potentially risky locations, such as high altitudes, high temperatures, and elevated atmospheric pressure environments.

Disadvantages The helicopter’s loud noise makes it challenging to communicate with the survivors and rescue teams. Additionally, the hovering helicopter’s strong downwash creates poor visibility conditions and produces Foreign Object Debris (FOD). Finally, compared to fixed-wing aircraft, and even though helicopters have adequate endurance, they tend to have limited range for serious over-the-horizon operations, e.g., extracting a seriously ill merchant ship sailor from their vessel in the middle of the Atlantic.

Airbus H175

Sikorsky S-70

AgustaWestland AW189

Heavy-Weight Helicopters: •

Airbus H225 Super Puma

Sikorsky MH-53 Pave Low

SAR Platforms When it comes to the types of helicopters used in SAR operations, the SAR helicopter community generally selects aircraft with the range, flexibility, state-of-theart equipment, and capacity to meet their specific SAR mission. In particular, a SAR aircraft must be capable of carrying payloads that can be excessive. They could be medical and airborne sensor equipment, injured personnel, and others. The aircraft should also fly to max distances and altitudes, primarily to deal with any unwelcome obstacles, distances, or conditions during the most challenging operation. Moreover, the platform must also be swift and responsive in managing several different terrains during the operation, like mountainous, high sea conditions, and others. Based on this, the key aircraft flight parameters that meet these requirements are: • Maximum takeoff gross weight •

Range

Equipment SAR helicopters, outfitted with the proper mission equipment, can perform their lifesaving tasks and techniques ten-fold. Because of specialised equipment and systems, the SAR missions can occur anywhere – mountains, desert, over water, urban areas, or the jungle. Weather, distance, time of day, and scenario are some of the factors that require the need for specialised SAR equipment. Some of the standard types of capabilities you could find integrated into a SAR helicopter Hardware: •

Search Light

Loud Speaker

Rescue Hoist

Fast Rope Insertion/Extraction System

Rescue Strop

Litter and Rescue Bag

Rescue Basket

Stretcher/Emergency Medical Kits

Systems: •

Weather Radar

Auto-Hover

Night Vision Devices/Goggles

Electrical-Optical/Infra-Red (EO/IR) Camera Sensors

Specialized Mission Management & Navigation Systems

Cellular Geolocation System

SAR Team What is the professional profile of a SAR helicopter crew? Because there is a variety of SAR operations or tasks, there is a variety of professional skillsets and crew positions on a SAR helicopter. For example, sea rescue operations require skilled ocean swimmers. Combat rescue uses Special Operation Forces (SOF) teams. Urban SAR requires hazardous material experts and structural specialists, and more. However, some of the most common specialised SAR helicopter aircrew (other than a SAR Helicopter Pilot and depending on type platform) positions are: •

SAR Flight Engineer/Mechanic

SAR Technician - Observer

SAR Technician – Hoist Operator

SAR Technician – Medic

SAR Technician – Airborne Sensor Operator

SAR Technician - Swimmer

Besides specialised training for the pre-mentioned specific aircrew positions, the common knowledge or training SAR helicopter crews are expected to have or acquire are: • Helicopter Safety/Crew Resource Management (CRM) •

Helicopter Ground Handling (e.g., refueling, marshaling, etc.)

Helicopter Emergency and Crash Procedures (To include underwater egress training)

SAR Management Programs and Processes (e.g., Command & Control, Regulations, Policy, etc.)

Specialization in SAR Sub-Fields (e.g., Mountain Rescue, Urban Rescue, etc.)

Specialization in SAR Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (e.g., Search Techniques, Air-Ground Communications, Extraction Methods, etc.)

Future of SAR Operations What is the future for helicopters in SAR operations? Like the Aerial Work aviation sectors of Humanitarian Air Service or Air Ambulance, the need or demand will continue without question. The main changes currently trending into the future are who provides SAR helicopter services and what is used, i.e., kit to save lives. Up to now, the private or commercial sector has had no significant role to play in SAR activities other than regional volunteer groups conducting such support. Depending on the country, SAR operations are usually assigned to government organisations, i.e., military, interior ministry, or even the transportation department. In the past few years, commercial Aerial Work service operators have begun performing these public service missions. This change is linked to developments in

government budgetary constraints or operational bandwidth issues (e.g., “Sorry, we’re unavailable, we’re on deployment”) and in areas that are no longer covered by national emergency services (e.g., outside of jurisdiction). Therefore, private or commercial companies have stepped in to take over from or provide support to military and public safety organisations. New innovative designs and technology are changing how SAR helicopter missions are being conducted when it comes to kit. More and more, either new capabilities are introduced to the community (e.g., Cellular Geolocation Systems, Wide-Area Motion Imagery (WAMI) systems, etc.) or significant improvements are made to the existing kit (e.g. utilising high-strength fiber components vs. metallic to save weight and effectiveness). The bottom line is that the demand and technical improvements in the SAR helicopter sector continue. The lifesaving upshot, as mentioned before, is that the SAR helicopter community is only getting better.

Summary As you can see, the helicopter is genuinely the leadingedge part in the Aerial Work aviation Search and Rescue sector. If you think about it, no other aircraft can (yet — if one things about emerging eVTOLs) meet the specialised or specific requirements of saving a stranded person on a snowy Alpine cliff within minutes or from a half-sunken ship far from shore in high seas conditions. The helicopter’s unique capabilities and the perfect match of specialised integrated technology and highly trained aircrew members make this platform a potent force. So, think about it, the SAR mission and the “Whop, Whop, Whop” of the helicopter are almost a perfect match made in heaven, OR from the perspective of that lost or injured person, it is a powerful sense of relief and hope!... “Thank You, I Now have a Chance in Life!” I

A Tiger in the Grass

By Jamie Chalkley

This month we’re going to take a look at an aircraft that’s a couple of hundred knots slower than last month’s featured aircraft (the Spitfire). In case speed isn’t your thing (or maybe you just prefer the idea of flying a ‘cabriolet’!), I thought it would be remiss not to mention the aircraft that were the wheels to most WWII Spitfire pilot’s very first landing — the much-loved Tiger Moth. So, getting right into the piano wire and linen sheets of it all… where did it begin? Actually… on a hill, in 1909! “…I like a thing to look right”

A Few Years Later…

Geoffrey de Havilland, born in 1882, was a graduate from engineering school with a passion for flight. He and a mechanic friend by the name of Frank Hearle built their first ‘flying machine’ with a twin prop system powered by a 45-horsepower engine. He climbed amongst the struts, the piano wire braces and some tightly spread linen and flew thirtyfive yards from the top of a Hampshire hill. It was more of an arrival than a landing, but he climbed out relatively unhurt in his high-breasted suit determined to improve matters.

The pair persevered and by the time WWI broke out they had an actual combat aircraft in service, the DH2. It could climb to over 10,000 feet and had a top speed of 93 mph. And still they continued their work. On one occasion, when asked about his design work across the growing fleet, Geoffrey de Havilland added (at the end of a more detailed reply): “…I like a thing to look right”. This reminds me of last month’s reference to Beverly Shenstone’s remark about his elliptical wing design for the Spitfire: “…and it looked nice!” Perhaps the old adage of ‘if it looks right, it flies right’ is true after all!

Six months later and one propeller less, he had another go. And another. Each time learning and improving. And, of course, the actual piloting of the craft could only be self-taught. Nothing came easy!

The de Havilland Aircraft Company quickly established itself as a major player in aircraft design, development and production. Its base in 1920

was at Stag Lane Aerodrome, Edgware, London and would you believe it if I told you that a young lady by the name Amy Johnson would happen to stumble across the airfield after moving south to London! She booked a lesson with the De Havilland School of Flying and paid the equivalent of £5 for a one hour trial lesson. Two years later, at the age of 26, she departed Croydon Airport in her DH60 Gipsy Moth, registration G-AAAK (you can still look it up on G-INFO!!), on her epic flight to Australia. To this day, a truly impressive achievement.

Hubert Broad at the controls. Soon after, production was underway of one of the most popular training aircraft ever built. Especially in the Royal Air Force, where the aircraft went on to be used extensively as the RAF primary trainer.

Birth of the Moth Generation

Between 1931 and 1944 nearly 9,000 Tiger Moths were built, and they remained in RAF service until eventually being replaced by the de Havilland Chipmunk in the early 1950s.

The Moth generation (named after an actual moth because the wings on the DH60 folded back resembling the insect that de Havilland was reported as having a keen interest in) was an extremely interesting time for aircraft development. A most unexpected aircraft appeared on the scene as a 6-seater (plus pilot) called the Giant Moth and was operated mainly in Canada and Australia. Two examples even had a toilet fitted! The passengers sat inside a comfortable cabin area, while the pilot sat out on top in an open cockpit. I’m not sure where the toilet was!

The Tiger Moth Then came the DH82 Tiger Moth. This aircraft conducted its first flight from Stag Lane on 26 October 1931, with de Havilland Chief Test Pilot

In 1934, the aircraft received an engine upgrade to the 130 horsepower Gipsy Major and in 1937 overseas manufacturing started, with de Havilland Canada being the first to start a production line.

Our picture aircraft is a very beautiful 1939 example wearing its RAF markings ‘R5172’. The photographs were taken just a few weeks ago by Clare Hartley. They were taken on the same day as last month’s spectacular air-to-air sequence of MH415, the Mk. IX Spitfire (also photographed by Clare). The de Havilland Tiger Moth is an absolute delight! If you want to get back to the grass roots of flying and truly call yourself a stick and rudder pilot, the Tiger is just the aircraft and is a terrific flying machine to spend your time in. To anyone that hasn’t had a go in an open cockpit bi-plane, I can’t recommend it highly enough! www.TASCVintage.com

CHECK YOUR INSURANCE !

Advice for Winter Flying…

Give us plenty of time to get you a Better Insurance Quote

you have an incident or accident,” says Chris Varley, chairman of Export & General Aviation Insurance. “Also, if your aircraft is poorly maintained and in poor condition, this could be picked up by loss adjusters following any claim.”

Flying in winter presents many risks that aren’t present in summer so it’s important to look after your aircraft (and yourself and any passengers!), putting safety first.

According to Chris Varley, Chairman of Export & General (E&G) Insurance, businesses are rarely proactive in looking early for better insurance premiums, which can contribute significantly to wider cost-cutting measures. “Whether you need insurance for your aircraft, hangar-keeper’s liability insurance, professional indemnity insurance, speaking to us early, perhaps a couple of months before the renewal date, can mean significant savings,” says Varley, who adds “We’re happy to remind you so feel free to let us know your current renewal dates.”

This includes maintenance/ general care; pre-flight planning and preparation; and conduct of the flight. It is important that your aircraft has the required features (e.g. FIKI kit) if you intend to fly IFR where you could be exposed to an icing environment — and don’t forget to ensure your pilot licences are current!

ABOUT E&G AVIATION INSURANCE E&G Aviation Insurance is a leading aviation insurance broker specialising in insurance liability business cover including professional indemnity; cover for buildings including hangars and workshops; and for aircraft whether operating commercially, privately, or for training. In winter, aeroplanes are more prone to weather-related issues especially if left outside — and even more so if not being flown much. “They’ll be more prone to maintenance issues, even routine things like tyres going flat,” says Varley. “Insurance may not pay out for a poorly maintained aircraft,” he warns.

DAN PETRESCU PILOT AND FAMILY MAN 1953 - 2021

Having known Dan Petrescu for fifteen years and flown with him around Europe, he left a lasting impression on me. His kindness and empathy was like no one else's I have met. He had a superhero ability to understand a person and help guide them to better themselves.

His wife, a lovely person, continued to work at Lufthansa for many years before her retirement and, with their son Dan Petrescu Jr., they lived a humble life well below their means. Dan always said, “If I spent all money on useless things, I would be poor.” For this reason I best remember him driving like a race car driver around Bucharest in his beat-up Smart car.

Only over the past few years did Dan kind of “retire” and started to live a billionaire’s life travelling the world in his PC-12 and sailing on his yacht. Whenever we met, he always treated me like I was at the centre

of the aviation world and as his friend. He acted as a mentor for me and his influence played a role in who I have become. Just a few weeks ago he wrote to me: “Money is not relevant if you have a sufficient amount, so that you can enjoy the real life, as simple as it is!” He was obviously happy in life and with his family, and always kept an outlook that the glass is half full! Dan, having started out in hard Eastern Bloc Romania, was equipped with an engineering degree and great salesman skills. He moved, among other places, to Germany, New York, and eventually back to Romania to build his empire.

I congratulate Dan for his success in life that he fought hard for. I admired him for his humanity and kindness, and I am glad that I had the opportunity to know him and enjoy with him the passion of aviation. Scott Boylan - Aircraft Partner 4U

ACF-50 PREVENTS AND DEACTIVATES EXISTING CORROSION Corrosion prevention and control is a prime focus of all aviation maintenance professionals. Prevention is the most costeffective tool a mechanic can use against the damages of corrosion. Regular ACF-50 treatments reduce maintenance costs and improve overall flight safety. Specially designed equipment and application methods, pioneered by Lear Chemical, deliver ACF-50’s penetrating fog to all critical rotorcraft structures. Only ACF-50’s advanced corrosion control properties protect both the airframe and avionics systems.

Teflon® & rubber hose assemblies

As the Distributor for Parker Hannifin Aerospace/ Strato flex products Division WMT offers hight quality hose, fittings, swivels and quick disconnects for many aerospace applications:

• landing gear • aircraft propulsion • utility hydraulics • pneumatic systems • lube oil/fuel • coolant • potable water • ground support • air data • space

The US government, commercial rotorcraft operators, fleet operators, and private owners all over the world trust ACF-50’s tough anti-corrosion protection. ACF-50 has endorsements or approvals from 30 airframe OEMs and meets industry (AIRBUS, Boeing, Douglas, Mil-Spec) anti-corrosion performance requirements.

SWITCHING OFF CORROSION Designed specifically to perform as both a Corrosion Inhibiting Compound (CIC) and a Corrosion Prevention Compound (CPC),

ACF-50’s blend of non-flammable, non-toxic, polar bonding inhibitors and moisturedisplacing additives penetrate deep into corrosion cells to actively remove electrolytes. No longer in contact with the metal surface, these electrolytes evaporate. ACF-50’s resulting dielectric fluid film acts as an “off-switch” for the corrosion process. • Complete anti-corrosion solutions for airframe, avionics and ground support equipment. • Significantly reduces corrosion events in both Structure & Avionics. • Ultra-Thin Film promotes weight reduction, improving payload capacity. • Removal not required for re-application; creates no HAZMAT residue. • ACF-50 is Non-Toxic according to EPA / OSHA standards. • VOC compliant worldwide. Blackhawk Launches PC-12

Engine Upgrade Programme Blackhawk Aerospace announced in October that it is adding the Pilatus PC-12 singleengine turboprop to the roster of aircraft that can benefit from aftermarket engine upgrades under Supplemental Type Certificates (STCs). Blackhawk says its scheme involves the stock Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC) PT6A67B engine being replaced with the higher thermally rated PT6A-67P model. It calls this programme the XP67P Engine+ Upgrade. Flight testing ahead of certification is projected to start in early 2022.

Higher Turbine Temps The XP67P engine technology utilises improved metallurgy, which allows a higher Internal Turbine Temperature (ITT) limitation of 850°C compared to the stock -67B’s 800°C limitation for takeoff. “More impressively, maximum continuous ITT for climb and cruise is 760°C for the -67B and 820°C for the XP67P,” said Blackhawk. The PT6A-67P is a 1200 shaft horsepower (SHP) engine that produces 142 more thermodynamic horsepower than the stock PT6A-67B. “The combination of the higher ITT and thermo produced by the -67P engine enables operators to utilise full torque to more efficient cruising altitudes. Where the stock -67B starts losing power at 13,000 feet, the XP67P can maintain full power to 23,000 feet.” Jim Allmon, Blackhawk’s President and CEO, said: “Building upon the success of our existing Caravan engine upgrades, adding the Pilatus PC-12 platform to our growing list of STCs was a natural evolution for the aftermarket engine upgrade business that Blackhawk was built on. Our foundation of innovation continues to carry us to new and exciting heights, and we look forward to welcoming PC-12 owners and operators into the Blackhawk family.”

600 Eligible PC-12s Blackhawk’s market research shows that there are 1,700 PC-12s in operation, making it the second largest single-engine turboprop market behind the Cessna Caravan. With more than 600 of the PC-12s eligible for the XP67P upgrade, many of the aircraft in the addressable market are at, or close to, an overhaul event, which is the optimum opportunity to upgrade to new engines, bringing these aircraft up to factory standards. Further, operators will receive favourable core engine credit of $95 per hour for time remaining to the factory TBO if upgrading before overhaul. The XP67P Engine+ Upgrade includes one factory-new P&WC PT6A-67P engine and maintains the existing Hartzell four-blade aluminium propeller. Blackhawk plans to certify additional propeller options in the future to provide operators modularity in the upgrade package.

About Blackhawk Blackhawk Aerospace was founded in Waco, Texas in 1999 when Jim Allmon, Dale Griffin, and Matt Shieman first created Blackhawk Modifications, Inc. Later, Blackhawk Aerospace Composites, Blackhawk Aerospace Solutions, and Blackhawk Aerospace Technologies were added to the Blackhawk Aerospace family.
