Drone use is growing rapidly in the UK as consumer-grade devices have become increasingly sophisticated and prices have come down. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) estimates that there are now approximately 130,000 drone users in Britain and it’s believed the steadily increasing variety of commercial applications utilising drones could add more than £40 billion to the economy by 2030. Whether flying a drone for recreational or commercial purposes, their operation is regulated under the Air Navigation Order legislation. In November 2019, it became a legal requirement for drone owners to register with the CAA, or face a fine of £1,000. According to the London Luton Airport based British School of Aviation (BSA), which is a CAAapproved Recognised Assessment Entity (RAE) for commercial drone pilots, drone usage will ultimately form part of the wider aviation industry. Without training, however, the market will not be able to grow. BSA was therefore set up to serve the market for training commercial drone pilots to achieve their GVC competency - General VLOS (Visual Line of Sight) Certificate.

BSA Sets Up Drone Training Course

“Even before the Covid-19 pandemic, the scope and scale of drone applications was expanding significantly”, commented Chief Executive Officer of BSA, Anoop Singh Bamrah. “From a commercial perspective, the requirement for more costefficient methods of inspection, surveying and even aerial nondestructive testing means that there is a need for competent drone pilots. These individuals could already be existing engineers who, by adding a pilot rating to their skillset, could add value to their companies,” continued Bamrah.
existing customers, including airlines and MROs, stand to benefit hugely by harnessing drones for maintenance inspections of aircraft on the ramp or in the hangar, as they seek to cut operational costs in the wake of Covid-19. “Beyond the aviation industry, however, we forecast that many sectors, such as oil and gas, wind energy and the construction industry for example, will ramp up the use of drones for data collection as a management tool, particularly in more hostile environments, where safety is critical.” As part of its strategy to support the aviation industry in developing operational personnel, BSA is exploring collaborations with a number of specialist organisations offering drone services, one of which is creating a nationally recognised accreditation for commercial drone pilots. Concluded Bamrah: “If flying a drone for business purposes, operators must first acquire ‘Permission for Commercial Operation’ from the CAA, which is a legal requirement. As a CAAapproved assessment entity, BSA not only meets the CAA’s training and assessment requirements but looks to prepare commercial drone pilots for operations in challenging and also hazardous airspace. As yet, there are no specific ratings for pilots flying within these types of environment but BSA and other partner organisations believe this to be a necessity for safe and cost-effective operations as drone usage accelerates.”
“As an innovator in aviation training, the addition of drone pilot courses to BSA’s portfolio is both complementary and timely. Our

Micro Vortex Generators
atec aviation GmbH & Co. KG
Micro Vortex Generators are small aluminium blades placed in a spanwise line aft of the leading edge of the wing and on tail surfaces. They control airflow over the upper surface of the wing by creating vortices that energize the boundary layer. This results in improved performance and control authority at low airspeeds and high angles of attack.

microphone may be positioned on the left or right side, without detaching from the headset. Clear voice transmission is ensured via a highquality amplified electret microphone capsule with noise cancellation. Adding to the overall efficiency of its design, the Airman 8+ requires no batteries for ANR – reducing waste and operating costs – yet it achieves comparable results to leading battery-powered ANR headsets for commercial and business aviation. Both the dual PJ and single XLR5 connector versions rely solely on the cockpit power supply via the microphone bias power. ANR helps to significantly reduce pilot fatigue and improve audio intelligibility for in-flight communications; Airman 8+ ANR is specifically tuned to reduce intrusive higher frequency wind noise in the turbine cockpit, as well as noise from avionics cooling fans. An acoustic limiter protects against sudden increases in sound level, and an onboard fail-safe ensures constant communication. A deluxe carrying case is included, equipped with a foam center cushion for structural support and cable management. The Airman 8+ is FAA TSO-C139a approved, EASA compliant, and meets RTCA DO-160G and DO-214A standards. Pipistrel - Velis Electro
First Ever Type Certified Electric Powered Aeroplane
When Slovenian aircraft manufacturer Pipistrel flew its WATTsUP concept demonstrator in 2014, and later showed the aircraft at the Salon de Blois airshow on 30th August that year, it was to mark a path that resulted in the world’s first certificated electric aircraft - the Velis. On the way to that achievement, Pipistrel introduced the Alpha Electro, although development of all this started back in 2007. After the success of the WATTsUP, Pipistrel took its existing two-seat, high-wing composite aircraft, the Virus, and replaced its Rotax 912 power plant with the electric motor while modifying the design to carry a power pack behind the two seats. Siemens of Germany provided the electric motor. The Alpha Electro 2-seat electric trainer is tailored to the needs of flight schools with an endurance of one hour plus a 30-minute reserve. “The Alpha Electro is optimised for traffic-pattern operations, where up to 13% of energy is recuperated on every approach, increasing operations range and at the same time enabling short-field landings,” said Pipistrel. “With the ever-growing cost of fuel, it is time to rethink pilot training. Our solution is the first practical allelectric trainer. Technologies which we developed in-house specially for this aircraft cut the cost of abinitio pilot training by as much as 70%, making flying more affordable than ever before.” The recommendation from dealers at the moment is to run one alongside conventionally powered aircraft, but in future better battery packs will allow longer operations and quicker charging (which takes a minute for every minute of flight time, roughly). While the Alpha Electro met the microlight and ASTM LSA requirements, as well as standards for electric propulsion systems, meaning in some countries it could be used for PPL training, Pipistrel pushed on further to create a version that would meet EASA requirements for a fully certificated aircraft. This led to the Velis, based on the Virus SW121. The upgraded Virus type certificate was awarded by EASA to Pipistrel Vertical Solutions d.o.o. on 10th June, now covering both the Virus (the SW 121B) and Virus SW 128 (the “Commercial Designation” of which is the Velis Electro). The 60+ kW electric motor only weighs 20 kg and is more powerful than the Rotax 912 engine. The 21 kWh
18 PISTON BUYER EUROPE AUGUST 2020
battery pack is dual-redundant and designed to be either quickly replaceable within minutes or charged in less than one hour, “thanks to the next generation of Pipistrel’s Battery Management technology.” The airframe uses proven features from hundreds of Pipistrel’s aircraft flying worldwide, added the company.
“
Working in tight collaboration with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency, whose engagement was essential to reaching this unprecedented milestone, Pipistrel demonstrated that its new Velis Electro achieves the highest levels of safety.
”
“After years of intensive research and several successful award-winning electric aircraft models developed since 2007, Pipistrel has today achieved a breakthrough feat in aviation history, having type certified the battery powered Velis Electro. Working in tight collaboration with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency, whose engagement was essential to reaching this unprecedented milestone, Pipistrel demonstrated that its new Velis Electro achieves the highest levels of safety.” The Velis Training System centred on the Velis Electro has been designed to be simple to operate and maintain and includes a charging dock that Pipistrel hopes will be adopted at airfields around the world — along with its own simulator. Ivo Boscarol, founder and CEO of Pipistrel Aircraft, commented: “The type certification of the Pipistrel Velis Electro is the first step towards the commercial
WWW.PIPISTREL-AIRCRAFT.COM
use of electric aircraft, which is needed to make emission-free aviation feasible. It is considerably quieter than other aeroplanes and produces no combustion gases at all. It confirms…to other electric aircraft designers that the Type Certificate of electric engines and aeroplanes is possible.” The engine, which Pipistrel type certified separately, is also available to other aircraft OEMs. And for Pipistrel, this achievement injects additional motivation for the future eVTOL and multi-seat hydrogen-powered projects. Pipistrel will deliver the first 31 Velis Electro aircraft to customers in seven different countries during 2020. Marc B. Corpataux was the launch customer for the Velis Electro, for AlpinAirPlanes GmbH. “With more than 400 flight hours and 25 pilots introduced to the predecessor Alpha Electro, we are convinced of the suitability of electric flight in the daily flight school environment. Initially, we will distribute 12 aircraft on 10 airfields over Switzerland. Each base will be equipped with 150 m2 of photovoltaic panels, producing electricity for 12,000 flight hours per year on the Velis Electro. We are happy to offer the most environmental friendly training possible.” The flight test programme used a fleet of (noncertified) Alpha Electros under EASA permit to fly, so the EASA team, which included members from the launch National Aviation Authorities (France’s DGAC FR and Switzerland’s FOCA), had access to operational data necessary for the certification activity, while highlighting the operational needs to enable electric aviation. During the course of these projects, EASA gained firsthand experience in electric flight, learning more about batteries and their management systems, as well as electrical engine power units. This information has been used to develop the E&HPS Special Condition to further enable electric flight, said EASA.

Electric Aircraft Are Great But Insurance Is The Key The first electric General Aviation aircraft have started to come to the market and they make a lot of sense — quieter, cleaner, cheaper to run and maintain, the list of advantages goes on.
And for those that already have their eyes on eVTOLs, Varley says “After exploring this sector too, it seems these are basically large drones — but they do need testing and will have to come up to very high standards to carry people.”
However, as Chris Varley, Chairman of Export & General (E&G) / Approach Aviation Insurance, says, “What you’re allowed to do is as much as anything else down to insurance and whether you can get it.”
Varley has gone as far as helping developers of such craft find suitable testing sites and is convinced that the market will need financiers and insurers to be ready to support what could be a very large market in decades to come — more akin perhaps to cars in number, but starting off more like General Aviation in number — though it seems more likely for safety (and insurance?) that they’ll be autonomous, or at least “optionally piloted”.
That in turn, he points out, depends on how you present the safety case. “It’s important to engage with insurers early on,” says Varley, who says E&G has been availing itself of drones and even the idea of eVTOL vehicles so it can better understand the risks, and be ready for the new markets. Drones have been around for some years now including in many commercial applications and with it they have brought greater familiarity with batteries and charging, as opposed to mechanical engines and liquid fuels However the main issue is not necessarily the technology but the fact it’s a niche market, and will take some time to grow. “If you think normal aviation insurance has limited markets, then electric has more limited markets,” says Varley, who as a broker goes out of his way to try to set up tailored insurance — often
shopping himself around the underwriters who accept aviation risks, at Lloyds of London etc. For this reason he urges those thinking of buying an electric aircraft, such as the newly certificated Pipistrel Velis Electro, to go to a broker “well in advance” to ensure there is time to get quotes and put insurance costs into the equation. “I am looking at this proactively and am very open to people contacting me with their electric aircraft requirements,” suggests Varley.
Back in the present day and with COVID-19 pushing the world faster towards a digital, sustainable economy, the momentum towards electric aircraft has surely grown and the reopening of aviation will see airports and airfields start to equip themselves with chargers to cater for the coming wave. Already some countries have significant numbers of Pipistrel’s Electros and with the certificated Velis Electro coming too, and other manufacturers working on electric models, and governments pushing for green projects, soon electric will start to become mainstream in the way Tesla has put electric cars well and truly on our roads. Registering in Trust: The FAA’s Position on Aircraft Titles The civil aviation industry relies on the FAA for many services, including information, certification, and training. While the FAA also provides many resources, it is still sometimes difficult to understand how they handle documentation – that is important when registering in trust. Further, and more specifically, what is the FAA’s position on aircraft titles? The answer, quite simply, is they do not have one. Aircraft owners, or owners in trust, should know that the FAA’s sole purpose regarding aircraft titles has been to file and record documents. While the FAA has primarily been a document repository thus far – not authorized to issue certificates of title, make any determinations related to aircraft titles, or issue opinions on the status of a title – the difference between filed and recorded FAA documents can affect an aircraft’s title and delay registration. The standard list of recordable documents that are related to an aircraft’s title includes (but is not limited to): the bill of sale, application for registration, security interests, claims of liens, releases, and disclaimers. There is also a long list of documents that the FAA will not record – which is equally important knowledge to have when registering in trust. Here is additional important information, and examples, regarding the FAA and aircraft titles – some of the ins and outs of what is reviewed, recorded, searched, and decided on.
Aircraft Title Reports
Searching Aircraft Title Information While the FAA is undergoing a massive modernization project to digitize records, they currently give some basic title information on their N-Number Inquiry website page, like the make, model, and serial number of the aircraft. They also provide the identity of the registered owner. However, the only way to know if there are any outstanding liens against an aircraft is to search the entire aircraft record, and the FAA is not in the habit of doing that. Therefore, you will find nothing online telling you if there are any liens against your aircraft. If asked, the FAA will advise you to call a title company or law firm, who will perform a title search of all available documents. There is what might be considered an exception, pertaining to the sale or purchase of an aircraft that will be exported out of the US. This is the only time the FAA will search an aircraft record and make a statement about liens against a title. By law, a plane cannot be exported to a foreign country if a US lender has an interest in that plane without the permission of the lender. So, when the FAA receives a request to deregister a plane, they will search the records to determine internally if there are any outstanding consensual liens against the title. They still will not issue a certificate of title to the public. If the title is clear, they will issue a certificate of deregistration. If not, they will inform the parties involved that they cannot deregister the aircraft. The burden of clearing the title or resolving the issue, once again, falls back to the parties involved.
Accessing FAA Records
Title reports are a review of the records at the FAA, but they are not issued by the FAA. Instead, private companies, such as title companies and law firms, search FAA records to create and issue reports based on their own interpretations of the information found. Different companies may reach different conclusions based on their research, which can result in conflicting title reports for the same aircraft.
Obviously, the process of searching aircraft records to produce accurate title reports is not as simple and straightforward as one might think. While the FAA records are public, and anyone can request and receive (currently by mail) a full copy of the FAA file on any aircraft, not everyone wants to do that.
For example, a client may buy a plane based on a title search with a clear title. When he or she then goes to sell the plane, it is not uncommon for a different title company to report a cloud on the title – and according to our sister company, Wright Brothers Aircraft Title, clouded titles can cause a host of problems.
The FAA modernization project, along with recent GAO recommendations, are pushing public electronic access forward. In the meantime, documents can only be viewed electronically in the Public Documents Room (PDR) at the FAA in Oklahoma City. This is not easy for those who are not located nearby and has recently been made more difficult with pandemic safety measures.
In a case such as this, the FAA does not get involved at all. They will not offer decisions on who is right and who is wrong. Buyers and sellers who find themselves in this situation must go back to the reporting companies and work to resolve the discrepancy.
Aircraft Guaranty has offices located at the FAA’s PDR for the efficient review of FAA records and the timely completion of title reports to clients on a regular basis. We also help with deregistration requests, and when necessary, title clearing services.

"The Show Must Go On" How does Aerial Work Aviation Entertain You? By Patrick Ryan Have you ever thought of those passionate professional members of the aviation community who pull incredible aerobatic G-Force maneuvers at air shows for you? If you want to know, Patrick Ryan highlights how the creative aspect of Aerial Work aviation and Aviation Entertainment comes together to make life more exciting and enjoyable! With today's availability of "eye-catching" aircraft and highly professional performers, it is easy to see that today's aviation entertainment sector is bringing the world of aviation to the public like never before. Scarcely six years after the Wright brothers' first flight, Aviation Entertainment began. The first public international airshow took flight on a small airfield near Reims, France, in 1909. Since 1909, Aviation entertainment has grown well beyond just a few events and bailwire fixed-wing aircraft conducting simple fly-bys at a local airfield. Still, it now routinely takes place at airshows, fly-Ins, and even at large public venues every year.
So, what takes place under "the big circus-tent" of Aviation Entertainment?
First Act - What is Aviation Entertainment?
Even though there is no established formal academic or industry definition for Aviation Entertainment, this aviation industry sector exists and has its own unique culture, platforms, equipment, and business focus, just Google the terms Airshows, Fly-Ins, SkyDiving, Aerobatic displays, Drone Light Shows, and more. You'll see an industry that's focused on entertaining.
One of the key aspects of Aviation Entertainment or Aviation Entertainers is that they push the boundaries of ordinary flying, i.e., flying up to the limits of both man and machine. In other words, it might not be dull or dirty like other Aerial Work operations, but it's an endeavor meant to be dangerous and stir a sense of awe, interest, and anxiety for its audience. The best way to understand or describe Aviation Entertainment is to look at two of the top-performing acts, Aerobatics and Wing Walking. Because of their awe-inspiring performances, you'll see Aerobatics and Wing Walking routines featured at most prominent airshows and fly-ins around the world.
Second Act -What is Aerobatics and Wing Walking?
Without a doubt, both performances share the spirit of performing in front of millions of spectators while conducting non-standard flight maneuvers. However, the similarities stop there. They both operate and perform in unique and specific ways.
Aerobatics
From a big picture view, Aerobatic performances consist of aircraft of all types, even gliders, and helicopters performing non-standard maneuvers either as a solo act or in a formation. However, the core Aerobatic displays you'll see at most shows are fixedwing (engine) aircraft. The primary types of high-G maneuvers performed are Lines (both horizontal and vertical), loops, rolls, spins, and hammerheads. The bottom-line is it involves the stunt pilot rotating the aircraft at its max limits around the longitudinal (roll) axis or lateral (pitch) axis.
Wing-Walking
Probably one of the most thrilling or death-defying acts is Wing Walking. Wing Walking is the act of a fearless and skilled performer (with an Aerobatic pilot at the controls) climbing over the wings of an aircraft during flight. In addition, while the Wing Walker is moving and positioning about the exterior of the aircraft, the aircraft is performing aerobatic maneuvers at the same time.

Third Act – What are the aircraft and equipment used for Aerobatics and Wing Walking performances?
Most Aerobatics and Wing Walking acts use specific kinds of aircraft with specialized equipment to enhance the visual aspect of the performance and add a level of safety for the performers. The predominant aircraft you will see used in these performances are prop and jet aircraft.
Aircraft
Aerobatics
It goes without saying. The basic design of an aerobatic aircraft is to withstand high GForce stresses involved in aerobatic maneuvers. Additionally, aerobatic aircraft usually have a stiffer structural frame, more durable landing gear, and a higher performance engine. Aerobatic aircraft are usually equipped with engines, and fuel systems that are specially designed for zero or negative G flight, whereas standard GA recreational aircraft, during extended low or negative G flight, will typically starve the engine of fuel or oil. When it comes to the kind of aircraft used in aerobatics, there are two types: specialist aerobatic planes and aerobatic capable aircraft. Specialist aerobatic planes like the Pitts Special and Yak-50 are designed for aerobatic performances. In contrast, aerobatic designed aircraft like the Cessna 152 Aerobat or R2160 Acrobin are still fit for general use – in other words, they can perform aerobatics while still being equipped to carry passengers and luggage.
“No Landing Fees!” Brendan O’Brien
Wing Walking
Like Aerobatics, Wing Walking performances also use aircraft designed to conduct aerobatic maneuvers. However, the favourite class of aircraft used by Wing Walkers is the biplane. When it comes to biplanes, the preferred aircraft are vintage or classic aircraft like the Boeing Stearman various models, De Havilland Mosquito KA 114, or even a Grumman G-164 Ag-Cat.
Founder & Pilot
Aerobatic Stunt Pilot
Specialized equipment & systems
As mentioned before, aerobatic stunt pilots are an exceptional breed of pilots. Many Aerobatic pilots own their planes and supplement their income working as aerial application pilots (crop dusters) or flying advertising banners for pay.
Smoke System
Additionally, Aerobatic pilots fly in competitions to earn flight hours and cash prizes. Some are members of a team that present exhibitions at public events and aircraft shows. Many experienced aerobatic pilots are certified flight instructors and earn additional income providing basic or advance flight instruction.
Regarding unique equipment and systems associated with Aerobatic and Wing Walking performances, the two-universal type of kit that stands-out is the smoke effect system and the safety harness & rig equipment for Wing Walkers. Opposite to what a lot of people think, the smoke from Aerobatic and Wing Walking planes is not generated by normal combustion, nor is it a contrail. This smoke effect is generated by injecting various color vaporized fog oil into the aircraft hot exhaust system. Besides this method, other performers use a smoke-producing system that can be integrated on the wingtips or under the airframe. Additionally, these new systems include various color injectors, which allows the pilot to change or mix colors while flying for maximum effect.
Wing Walker Safety Kit
About safety and Wing Walking, a critical piece of gear that keeps entertainment from tragedy is the rig & harness, which secures the Wing Walker to the wing of the aircraft. The rig & harness equipment is required to meet local authorities (and I would guess by the performer too) safety standards, which include the rig correctly secured to the mainframe of the aircraft and the harness secured by a second locking system or locking pin. If you're thinking parachutes, surprisingly, Wing Walkers are not required to or use parachutes. The reason for this is if a parachute were to deploy unintentionally while wing walking, the result would likely be disastrous entanglement with the aircraft and more.
Fourth Act – Who are the performers, and do you have the "The Right Stuff" to be one?
When it comes to Aerobatics and Wing Walking performers, you will come across an incredibly unique group of people who often forego job security and physical safety in exchange for the thrill of flying death-defying aerobatics. So, who are these performers: “Bring your own airport/runway - No landing fees!”
As you can imagine, aerobatic stunt pilots must be in good physical shape, have excellent reflexes, coordination, and hearing. Concerning their mental stability, they have one common or shared psychological trait, the need for speed! About their training, many aerobatic pilots receive their training while serving in the military. However, the equal and alternative training pipeline for aerobatic pilots is via obtaining a commercial pilot's license with the addition of aerobatic flight training from specialized aerobatic flight schools or a mentor. From there, advancement as a professional aerobatic pilot consists of pushing the limits of building experience and performance over time.
Wing Walker
Besides the aerobatic stunt pilot flying the wing walker aircraft, the daredevil who walks the wing is known as the Wing Walker. Not like a pilot, there are no license or rating requirements to be a Wing Walker. However, most professional Wing Walking stunt teams require Wing Walkers to be in good physical condition, no taller than 5'5" and less than 120 lbs, and be able to withstand (mentally and physically) high G-Forces and wind pressure while flying at speeds of up to 130mph. Additionally, when reading the profiles of many Wing Walkers, you will see many have a background in the performing arts, e.g., dancing and acting (plus, a bit of the stunt pilot psychology). Relating to training and practice, Wing Walkers learn basic airmanship, crew communications, and the principles of aerobatic flight. Their practice consists of traveling the exterior of the aircraft, managing safety equipment, and operating from different positions (Standing and lying prone) on various parts of the aircraft while conducting high G-Force and air rushing loops, rolls, and hammerhead maneuvers.
Encore
As with any entertainment event and bring the performance to an end, Aviation Entertainment is not one type of aircraft or one type of event. It consists of many parts of aviation like Aerobatics and Wing Walking, which come together to provide entertainment. When the curtains close on any Aviation Entertainment event, and the audience walks away astonished, happy, and emotionally affected by what they observed (especially the next generation of aviators) - " Mission Accomplished" - that's the purpose of Aerial Work Entertainment Aviation. The next time you observe an Aviation Entertainment event, think of the passion, dedication, and the skill that these Aerial Work Aviation Entertainers joyfully bring to the world. Without them, the world would be a duller place.

AUGUST 2020 AERIAL WORK EUROPE 23
YAKOVLEV AUG20.qxp_Layout 1 09/07/2020 14:14 Page 1
Ready For Action: Yakovlevs Display Team It’s early February 2019 and we’ve got eight days to breakdown one Yak-52 and five Yak-50s for shipping to China. As any Yak owner will relate, taking a 50 or 52 apart is a massive step-up from an Extra 300 or similar modern-day aerobat. Eight days to pack six aircraft into three 40ft containers, ensuring that they’re secure enough to survive a container drop (a not infrequent occurrence in our experience), plus packing of all the support equipment and spares, means that the admin work takes a vacation and all hands are required on the hangar floor. We can manage it in five days, but with quality engineers being a scarce resource, we’d rather that they were still around for the return journey.
It’s a dangerous road to head down, of course, and it wasn’t long before numbers two, three and four appeared. Then came number five (“It was too good a deal to turn down,” insisted Jez), and when you’ve got five, well, then you’re really in trouble, as six is plainly a better number to make up a formation…
So starts most seasons for our team. We’re a UKbased six-ship formation team and have been active on the display circuit for 20 years. For the last ten of these we’ve been concentrating on overseas markets as, sadly, the European circuit no longer pays enough to keep our fulltime team airborne. Having a total of eight Yaks (soon to become nine – yes, we are gluttons for punishment!) we’re able to provide two or, with the assistance of other Yak owners, fourship displays whilst the six-ship is overseas, so we do retain some presence in the UK and mainland Europe, but increasingly we’re having to treat this as a secondary circuit given that on these sorties we just about to manage to break even.
When in the UK the fleet is hangared at our Henstridge Airfield HQ in the southwest of England. It’s a good location for us as not only does it provide an open FIR for us to practice in, but we’re also close to a number of military bases, including the world-famous Empire Test Pilots School (ETPS) at Boscombe Down. The military is where the majority of our pilots are drawn from and we are honoured to have some of the world’s foremost test pilots on the team, including former and current ETPS instructors, ex Red Arrows pilots and the UK’s development team working on the F-35B Lightning II project with the USAF. As a former fast-jet RAF pilot, Jez is only too aware that a military background adds considerably to a formation pilot’s skills set, and while we do also have a number of highly skilled civilian pilots on the team, we tend to run the business with a military mindset. This does on occasion lead to accusations of ‘over-doing’ things, but as a privately-owned and operated enterprise we are acutely aware that the buck stops with us and should anything ever go wrong we want to still be able to sleep at night, knowing that we’ve put our pilots in the best maintained aircraft, given them the best training, and that this is all delivered in the safest possible environment.
The team founder and lead pilot is Jez Hopkinson. Jez caught the ‘Yak bug’ as soon as these iconic aircraft first started appearing in Western Europe in the late 1990s, following on from Mikhail Gorbachev’s push for greater integration with the worldwide community under his Glasnost initiative, which helped open up the Russian GA aircraft market for us. The purchase of his first Yak (a 52) was a nobrainer for Jez. After all, who wouldn’t want that amount of aerobatic performance packaged into an iconic warbird with such a (relatively) low price tag?
24 AERIAL WORK EUROPE AUGUST 2020
We’re still not sure how numbers seven and eight made it onto the fleet, but thankfully it now has to stop as once number nine arrives later this year we will have run out of hangar space (if anyone has any spare hangar space, by the way, please feel free not to call!).

Although we’re shipping the aircraft in February, the first show of the year doesn’t start until the end of April. Shipping by sea takes around six weeks to China and then there is the in-country transport to display location, the rebuild, test flying and practice. This year’s opening show is taking place in Zhengzhou, the capital city of Henan province in east-central China. It’s a place we’ve been to a number of times before and is a firm favourite with the team. The city is only threehours by bullet train from Beijing and, most importantly, boasts a number of ‘westernised’ hotels serving food that a) is vaguely recognisable and b) doesn’t move of its own volition. You might think we’re joking, but food is an incredibly important consideration. Some of the more remote Chinese locations that we have performed at have no concept of what a westernised palate requires and being served boiled bullfrog for breakfast really isn’t helpful when you’re about to pull high G loads and your stomach is meanwhile performing its own aeros routine! The crowds in China are incredible. In the UK we’ll be seen by up to 500,000 people over the course of a season. In China, we’ve had crowds of more than a million at a single show. In fact, in 2012 we were watched by more than 350 million spectators over a four-day period when we were broadcast live on China Central TV whilst performing at a new show at Faku up by the North Korean border. The flying is the fun part of the exercise – there’s nothing more fulfilling than delivering a fault-free routine. The rest is the ‘work’ element and displaying at locations which have little onsite support means that we have to cater for all eventualities. This means that along with the aircraft we ship a massive amount of support equipment and spare parts and have a team of six ground crew to keep us airborne.
WIR SPRECHEN DEUTSCH - ASTRID AYLING: +44 (0)208 549 5024 - Astrid@avbuyer.com
Following the end of the first display contract, the work doesn’t stop for us, as due to the unique way in which the Chinese military control their airspace we’re not allowed to fly the aircraft to the next display venue, but must break them down again, pack them back in their containers and move the team by road to the next location. General aviation in China is still in its infancy and western teams performing in China, especially if they come from a military background, are still viewed with an element of suspicion. A 3km boundary is placed round our display venues and woe betide anyone who strays outside of it; Yaks are highly manoeuvrable, but playing hide and seek with a J-10 isn’t in our pilots’ Ts&Cs! Away from China, our next largest market is in India. Aero India – Asia’s largest military procurement show – is now an established calendar event for us. Held every other year at Yelahanka Air Force Station on the outskirts of Bengaluru, the heat (35°C+) and altitude (3,000ft AMSL) makes the displays that much more challenging, given the density altitude we’re faced with. This means that we have to adjust our routine accordingly and, while we have superchargers, must take into account the attendant loss of power from our modified M14PF engines. It’s a great honour to display at Aero India – at the last show we were one of only two non-national civilian teams performing – and we are delighted to have been invited back for each subsequent show. While all of this ‘grandstanding’ is going on overseas, we still have a busy life back in the UK, in the form of a home display team, a flight training school, a Russian light-aircraft parts supply business, and an aviation consultancy company. As with all forms of general aviation, we find that diversity keeps us from bankruptcy… with any luck! AeroSuperBatics The World’s Only Aerobatic Formation Wingwalking Team AeroSuperBatics offers unique and exhilarating wingwalking experiences at the team’s beautiful, private WW1 airfield, Royal Flying Corps Rendcomb, located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty near Cirencester, UK.
Thrilling the Crowds The Wright brothers first flew in the early years of the 20th century. Shortly after, huge airshows were staged to showcase the new-fangled aeroplanes. Spectators turned up in their tens of thousands at the early airfields to watch young aviation pioneers fly like birds, pushing the limits of their basic flying machines. Then the Great War started, and with it came galloping strides in aircraft development and flying skills. By the end of the war aircraft could fly higher and faster, were more reliable and their pilots more skilled. When the war ended there were literally hundreds of surplus aeroplanes lying around that were no longer required. They were sold off to young daredevils who had caught the flying bug and weren’t very keen on spending the rest of their days working in an office. And so the flying circus was born. Members of the public could take joyrides at airshows for small amounts of cash. There were displays of terrifying loops and rolls and tricks like flying upside down. Naturally, the more outrageous and dangerous the stunt, the more the crowd enjoyed it, so if a young pilot wanted to make a living out of flying he had to come up with something a bit different. Something that pushed the edges of the envelope a little further out.
Wingwalking is Born In 1918 an American flier called Ormer Locklear came up with a stunt that was guaranteed to wow the crowds: he climbed out of the aeroplane and walked along the wing, and he even climbed from one aeroplane to another. Wingwalking was born. RFC Rendcomb opened in 1916. It was built as a training airfield and was soon home to 3,000 personnel. Pilots who learnt to fly at Rendcomb were posted to the Western Front in France and Belgium. Flying was new technology, and the military forces quickly made use of the fledgling air force. After the War finished, pilots were no longer required in large numbers so RFC Rendcomb closed in 1918.

1920s WW1
Fast-forward to 1984, when Vic Norman, the owner of Aerosuperbatics Ltd, had the foresight and vision to create a world beating wingwalking team. Starting off with one aircraft and quickly moving on to two, the airshow bookings started coming in. Within a few years, Vic and some friends acquired the site of RFC Rendcomb and over a short period of time restored the airfield to as near original condition as possible, reconstructing buildings and reassembling hangars. Situated in a tranquil area of the Cotswolds and with extensive views across open countryside, Rendcomb is in an ideal position to experience flights over the beautiful surroundings atop one of our original, classic 1940s Boeing Stearman biplanes. Equipped with a huge 450hp Pratt and Whitney radial engine, and fuelled by AeroShell, everyone in the vicinity of the aircraft feels the power. AeroSuperBatics features the world’s only formation professional wingwalkers, while its aircraft are flown by the most experienced wingwalking display pilots. Aerosuperbatics is proud to offer the public the unique opportunity to experience the thrilling dips, dives, turns, barrel rolls and loops, arguably one of the most extreme things anyone will ever do. Skilfully led by Vic, his world famous team went from strength to strength, developing into the Crunchie Flying Circus, The Utterly Butterly’s, Team Guinot Wingwalkers, and the Breitling Wingwalkers. Flying live in front of millions of people, the professional wingwalkers have performed breath-taking shows throughout Europe, the Middle East, China, Japan, India, Australia and the Philippines. The team’s professional wingwalkers perform phenomenal acrobatics, handstands and dance moves while strapped to the top wings of our five beautiful Stearman biplanes. All this while the display pilots fly through a carefully choreographed, energetic routine of dazzling aerobatics and close-formation flypasts. These manoeuvres include loops, rolls, stall-turns and inverted flight – all reaching speeds of up to 150 mph and ‘G’ forces of up to 4G. Altogether, a performance that’s not to be missed! Come and meet the team at their home ground in Cirencester and take up wingwalking yourself; it’s truly an experience of a lifetime. Visit gowingwalking.com

HOW DID WE MAKE THE NEW M600/SLS THE NEW STANDARD IN SAFETY? We taught it everything you know.
The HALO Safety System with Garmin® Autoland—the most groundbreaking advancement in recent general aviation history—does everything you would do when you can’t. After alerting ATC, checking fuel levels and weather, it safely lands the aircraft. In short, it’s as if the controls were still in your hands. See how your highest standards come standard at piper.com/HALO. TM

Weldon GAB Aug20.qxp_TURBINE NEWS AUG 16 10/07/2020 15:00 Page 1
GA’s Pump Experts The ‘Weldon Pump Division’ was created by the Weldon Machine Tool Company in 1942, in response to the US Government’s critical need to support the Allies’ war effort during WWII.
pressure) pump for proper operation under all conditions. This requirement was historically satisfied with a “primitive” voltage-dropping resistor, which has unstable voltage control, becomes very hot, and is electrically very inefficient.
A small group of designers and machinists were teamed to create a deicing pump for the B-24 Liberator, flying critical missions into northern Europe. They succeeded in record time.
Weldon’s solution was to design a tiny electronic voltage-control circuit board which is incorporated within the DC electric motor, and can control motor speed precisely. It is therefore a very lightweight and efficient design.
Fast forward to today - Weldon Pump has flourished as a stand-alone company for decades and has enjoyed steady growth and prosperity developing a wide array of fluid pumping devices for General Aviation, the military, ground support equipment, UAVs and industrial applications.
Weldon predominately uses both 14- and 28-Volt, direct-drive, permanent magnet, explosion-proof DC electric motors. Many of these motors take advantage of the cooling and lubricating characteristics of the fluid being pumped, so it is imperative that they are not ‘run dry’ to avoid internal damage. Other applications include engine-driven or mechanically-driven pumps for hydraulics or industrial metering requirements.
Now located in a modern facility in Oakwood Village, Ohio, Weldon has continued to create innovative engineering designs which have evolved into a comprehensive line of fuel and hydraulic pumps for its strong OEM customer base. The company’s high-tech CNC manufacturing facility is ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100D Aerospace registered as well as being an FAA Production Approval Holder (PAH – FAA). All products are manufactured to an FAA-approved quality system. Weldon provides its OEM customers with a complete design and build service, supported with extensive testing capability for all types of aircraft fluid pumping systems. All OE programmes are further supported with a dedicated Customer Service organisation which provides rebuilt and overhauled units to the aftermarket through an extensive world-wide wholesale distribution system.
Leading on Pumps
Weldon continues to lead the industry in the design and manufacture of the most reliable and dependable pump solutions for a wide range of GA applications, including: Fuel Boost Pumps, Injection Pumps, Propeller Unfeathering Pumps, Lubrication Pumps, Fluid Transfer Pumps, Smoke Pumps, Fuel Pressure Regulators and Valves.
production offerings, as well as incorporating innovation in their new designs. The engineering team’s capabilities include electrical and enginedriven pumps, fuel valves, filtration, along with electric and electronically-controlled motors. Historically, Weldon had used two positive displacement pump designs: the legacy ‘cam-vane’ pumping element; and a more conventional design which uses a centrifugally-loaded (“slung”) vane. The unique cam-vane design has a long-proven record in both industrial and aviation applications. These versatile pumps are self-priming, lightweight, and capable of handling a wide variety of non-corrosive liquids at high pressures. The displacement (flow rates) of the cam-vane pumps can be varied easily over a considerable range using different standard rotors, and have been used in a variety of ‘metering’ pump applications. Meanwhile, the ‘slung’ vane design was developed in the 1980’s to fill a need for a high output (flow), highpressure pump to supply fuel to fuel-injected engines, which were displacing older designs with carburettors.
With more than 90 years of precision engineering and manufacturing expertise, Weldon General Aviation pumps are highly sought-after by airframe manufacturers, dealers, and aircraft owners around the world.
With its higher flow rates, high pressure capability and exceptional durability, Weldon’s slung-vane design gained broad acceptance in the market in a very short time. The design has been very successful in the 18000-series of “Dukes’ replacements” pumps.
Weldon engineers have a sincere commitment to continuous product improvement in both the current

Still A Family Company!
From its very beginning, Weldon Pump has been a family-owned and operated company, and it continues to be since being acquired in 2015 by the Kelly family, who also owns several other aviation businesses. Weldon’s sister companies now include Kelly Aerospace Energy Systems (G/A magnetos and ignition harnesses), Kelly Aerospace Thermal Systems (G/A electric deicing and air conditioning), Curtiss Superior Valve (aircraft/industrial drains), AeroKool Aviation (G/A, military and commercial Air Cycle air conditioning), AK Structures (military & commercial structural repairs), and Springfield Manufacturing (military and commercial structure fabrication and repairs). Several loyal members of the Weldon office and shop team have been with the company for more than 40 years and bring a wealth of enthusiasm and experience to their roles in serving their customers. The company is known throughout the industry for outstanding, responsive service to its customers, from OEMs and distributors, to individual aircraft owners. The customer support team is knowledgeable in all aspects of pump application and is dedicated to responding to the mission-critical needs of customers. The proven performance and reliability of Weldon’s products, combined with the company’s commitment to continual engineering improvement and innovation in pump design, uniquely positions it to meet the most demanding needs of General Aviation.
“TECH TIPS" Installation Recommendations Filtration:
Running Dry:
Filtration plays a critical role in the performance of all fuel pumps. Since many Weldon pumps are designed and built with clearances as small as .0001 inch, proper filtration and clean fluids are imperative to pump longevity. System design, placement of tee fittings, elbows, flow dividers, check values, shutoff valves, header tanks, available voltage, and all voltage drops, will all play an important part in the life of your pump.
Do not run your fuel pump dry. Weldon pumps are built with durable tool steel and bronze construction, and the primary lubrication is the fluid being pumped. Pumps that are run without lubrication will develop premature seal leakage and/or permanent internal or motor damage. Dry running is the primary cause of premature failure of all boost pumps.
Contamination:
Keeping fuel-line connections clean of contamination is critical in the installation of all fuel pumps. While connecting the fuel lines, proper fittings will ensure a solid connection. Pipe dope has been known to contaminate pump mechanisms on installation and is not recommended.
All positive displacement pumps have tight tolerances (vane, gear, cam/vane) and are subject to contamination-induced failures, so good inlet fluid filtration is a must. Water ingestion or water pooling in inactive aircraft pumps can create rust and potential failures. Clean your filters and drain your fuel tank sumps regularly!

Growing as a Family Aviation Business NANCI & JIM
Company History
The foundation for what is now Aircraft Spruce & Specialty Co. dates to the summer of 1956 when Flo and Bob Irwin founded Fullerton Air Parts at Fullerton Municipal Airport in Southern California. Bob, born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, a pilot since the 1940's and active in the CAP and other aviation groups, knew airplanes and the parts that were needed to keep them flying. Flo, a native of Rochester, New York, had no aviation background but learned the business quickly and knew what it would take to keep customers coming back: fair prices and good service. Fullerton Air Parts grew into one of the largest retail aircraft parts suppliers in the western states during the next nine years. In 1965, Bob and Flo Irwin sold the business and founded another one which sold only one product, aircraft-grade spruce lumber for aircraft construction and restoration.
New Generation
…the heart of your aircraft®
Aircraft Spruce Co. quickly added more products to its small catalog and adopted the name Aircraft Spruce & Specialty Co., with a goal to offer everything pilots and aircraft builders need. As Aircraft Spruce grew it served more and more customers and more products were added, while its staff count grew from 2 in 1965 to more than 150 today. Jim Irwin, Bob and Flo’s eldest son, grew up in the business, working in jobs such as cutting metal and spruce, pulling and shipping orders, and managing kit programmes such as the Vari-Eze back in 1975 while still in college. Graduating from California State University at Fullerton in 1978 with a degree in business administration (marketing), Jim acquired the company and became president in 1980. Jim's wife Nanci, who graduated with an accounting degree from the University of Southern California in 1977, is vice-president and works full time managing the company's accounting and data processing departments. Jim Irwin has logged more than 4,000 hours as a multi-engine, instrument rated pilot since 1976 and Nanci Irwin is a licensed private pilot as well. They fly the company’s Twin Cessna extensively on business throughout the Southwest. The couple's three sons, Mike, Jeff and Rob, are all in management positions with the company.
“Our growth, from a single room in 1965 to the over 400,000 square feet in five facilities that we have today, has been a direct result of the loyalty and patronage of our customers.”
ACS Products
Flo and Bob Irwin, along with Jim's younger brother John, moved to Lake Havasu City, Arizona in the fall of 1983 and founded ACS Products Co., which manufactures a line of products which is distributed by Aircraft Spruce. Flo Irwin passed away on June 10, 1989, but the legacy of this warm, outgoing, and talented businesswoman lives on in the businesses she founded and built to serve the aviation community. John Irwin and his wife Frances now manage the ACS Products Co. operation. Bob Irwin was an instrument rated pilot with more than 2,000 hours logged, and based his 1968 Navion Rangemaster at Lake Havasu City until May 2000 when he retired as a pilot after fifty years of flying. Bob then moved the Navion to Chino Airport for his grandchildren to fly. Prior to acquiring the Rangemaster in 1976, Bob owned a Vultee BT-13B and a 1949 Ryan Navion. Bob Irwin passed away on June 26, 2015 at his home in Lake Havasu City, Arizona at age 95. Aircraft Spruce was housed in downtown Fullerton, California from its founding in 1965 until late 1997. For the last 24 years in Fullerton the company was operated in a historic Fullerton former citrus packing house, which the company eventually outgrew. In the fall of 1997, Aircraft Spruce moved to a new, 62,000 square-foot facility in Corona, California. In the Spring of 2004, Aircraft Spruce East moved to a new 52,000 sq. ft. facility in Peachtree City, Georgia from its old home in Griffin, Georgia.

Aircraft Spruce Canada was opened in Toronto in December 2006 and moved to the Brantford, Ontario Airport in October 2008. Aircraft Spruce Canada has grown rapidly in recent years and a larger warehouse became a priority. On October 3, 2016 the company moved into a new 20,000 sq. ft. distribution facility at Brantford Airport. In 2019, Aircraft Spruce opened two new facilities to better serve the Midwest and Alaska markets. Aircraft Spruce Midwest operates in a 50,000 sq. ft. facility in West Chicago, Illinois and Aircraft Spruce Alaska operates in a 15,000 sq. ft. building in Wasilla, Alaska. We are proud of the tradition of our company that now dates back some 54 years, and are pleased to have had the opportunity to help aviators around the world build the plane of their dreams. Our growth, from a single room in 1965 to the over 400,000 square feet in five facilities that we have today, has been a direct result of the loyalty and patronage of our customers. Our goal is to continue to provide the very best in products, prices, and customer service to our friends in the years to come.

ASL Camguard™ is an advanced oil supplement, F.A.A. accepted for use in most piston aircraft engines. Camguard is formulated to safeguard the investment in your aircraft engine by addressing the complex and interrelated problems of corrosion, carbon deposits and mechanical wear. Camguard combats corrosion by leaving a continuous film of inhibitor on metal surfaces. Camguard halts deposit formation, leaving your engine clean and parts free to move. So whether you fly a little or a lot, Camguard always pays dividends with decreased aircraft engine maintenance costs. Just adding 5% of ASL Camguard to your oil at every oil change provides peace of mind that comes with knowing your investment is protected.
