Cleaning Aircraft To Minimise Infection Risks
EASA has published a manual giving best practice for disinfecting General Aviation aircraft, and providing useful hints and ideas to keep your plane “virus free” while not damaging your aircraft or risking the health of other people. According to IAOPA Europe, it is “Intended of course for flying schools and flying clubs where various people use the same plane,” as well as for commercial operators. Coronavirus Guide for Disinfection of General Aviation Aircraft The following guide is specifically for General Aviation (GA) aircraft focusing on aircraft that are operated by more than one person. If you own and operate your own aircraft, you are the only person flying it and always fly solo — so you will only be exposed to your own contamination within the aircraft. On the other hand, aircraft operated by flight schools, or a flying club, will usually be flown by several people and crew. As Coronavirus seems to transmit through body fluids, this implies that droplets exhaled through coughing and sneezing may transmit the virus directly from person to person. However, the virus can survive for a significant amount of time (hours or even days) on different types of surfaces. If you touch a surface that has been touched or sneezed upon by an infected person, you may be exposed to the virus, receiving a “dose”. EASA Cleaning and Disenfection Advice Suggests: • • • •
Disinfect the Aircraft between each flight. Clean all surfaces where that may have been in contact with other people. Do not use compressed air, steamers or pressure washers. Viruses that are stationary on a surface may be sent back up into the air and inhaled. Do not start the cleaning process with a vacuum cleaner. Viruses may be blown through the filter and back into the
•
• •
air and inhaled (few vacuum cleaner filters stop the virus). A vacuum cleaner should only be used on surfaces that have already been disinfected. If possible, keep the body of the vacuum cleaner outside the aircraft to ensure that exhaust is blown away to the open air. Do not use an ionizer. Although it effectively attacks organic matter, it will also attack parts made of organic material, such as rubber, plastics and leather. Be aware of the effect of ozone on rubber hoses. Do not use hydrogen peroxide. Although effective, when vaporised it will deteriorate leather, acrylic fixtures and polycarbonate windows. Do use a disinfectant that has a documented effect on the corona virus.
You will find lists of recommended substances on the websites of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, and the United States Environmental Protection Agency. If you cannot get hold of ready-made substances for cleaning purposes, it is possible to mix one. A solution of Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) 60% and 40% water is effective on most surfaces, carpets, and seat cushion textiles. A 50/50-mix IPA solution will be suitable on most instrument panels. Leather and windows should not be treated with alcohol. A household dishwasher detergent is another option. Be careful to apply the right disinfectant on the right surface. For example: • Some chemicals are corrosive. Do not use them on metals. • Some chemicals make plastic brittle. Do not use them on plastics. Be careful not to spill on electric wires where the insulation may get damaged and arching may ensue. • Some chemicals are destructive to textiles, so avoid using them on textiles. Special care should be exercised when disinfecting seatbelts.

Tecnam Starts to Produce Face Shields for COVID-19 Protection Italian company says a lack of personal protective equipment (PPE) prompted it to design a Face Shield, with several versions in the pipeline depending on application.
Electronics and instruments: • Use a microfibre cloth to clean electronic displays and glass, as not to cause scratches. • Do not use wet-wipes, products containing citric acids, or sodium bicarbonate. These can etch the display. • Most disinfecting agents that effectively kill the virus are dangerous to people. Provide good ventilation wherever are cleaning and wear protective gear as recommended by the manufacturer. Typical avionics with anti-reflective glass, for example Garmin G1000, may be cleaned with a 50/50 IPA-solution. Some displays have plastic screens (acrylic, lexan or polycarbonate), for example the Garmin GNS 430 and 530series. Use a mild soap solution instead and consult the manufacturer. When it comes to instruments in the cockpit, more is not always better. Use as little fluid as possible and keep it on as short as possible to kill virus. Then wipe it off. Avoid getting fluids into the instrument panel. Before you go flying: • • •
Use gloves for your pre-flight inspection of the aircraft. If you have special flying gloves, feel free to use them in flight as well. Use only your own personal equipment. Especially headsets should not be shared between pilots or passengers. Eyes, nose and mouth are gateways for the virus. Using a headset that has been used by others, will represent a high risk, even if the headset has been cleaned.
In a cockpit, a number of switches, handles and levers must be operated during flight. Traditional airmanship has taught us to point our finger and physically touch to verify, even at non-moving items. For instance, we often point at the QNH setting of an altimeter and the heading bug of the heading system. Clean and disinfect every instrument or part of the cockpit that have been touched. Even with a cleaned and disinfected aircraft, you may still be infected if you enter a small aircraft with an infected person. During the coronavirus outbreak you should only fly with persons in your own household or keep the minimum distance recommended by the health authorities. This means that you may have to postpone flying with an instructor or examiner. IAOPA Europe says: “Another thing we want to ask you is to be considerate about your choice of destination. We don’t want GA to get negative attention because people fly from Corona-infected areas to destinations which so far have been isolated from the virus (for instance small islands). This is creating considerable concern among the inhabitants which also quite often tend to belong to an age group with higher risk (as a lot of our pilots do).”

Tecnam has designed quality protective face shields that are vital in preventing the spread of the COVID-19 Coronavirus. The initiative came as “a response to the lack of personal protective equipment (PPE) currently in the market, particularly during Italy’s Phase 2 lockdown, where certain activities are permitted only when using adequate protective devices.”
like these, companies such as Tecnam need to do their part. Protecting our first responders and healthcare workers has never been more important. We’ve marshalled the best resources of Tecnam to focus on immediately installing the production capacity for making PPE and supporting those most in need on the frontline of this pandemic.
Production of face shields is ramping up in parallel with Tecnam’s ongoing aircraft manufacturing activities, it stated.
“We are also pleased to provide a transparent device able to let everyone’s smile be visible once again! Last but not least, we hope this will contribute to a quick return to flight activities for our pilots, passengers and flight-training organizations.”
“Tecnam’s Research and Development department has channelled all its commitment and aeronautical design know-how into creating an innovative face shield with a multipurpose solution to protect the eyes and airways,” said the company. The Tecnam Face Shield (TFS) provides eye protection against droplets and sprays of fluids containing biological agents, while also protecting the nose and mouth from direct inhalation of biological matter that may contain the coronavirus.
The company has also been developing a version of the shield that can be equipped with air-intake filters, for those environments where air filtration is necessary in addition to protection from fluids containing biological matter.
The Tecnam TFS has been designed to fully adapt to the face. A single elastomer fascia allows the face shield to be worn comfortably, thanks to the polyolefin foam that is widely used in medical applications, says Tecnam. Ventilation is free but airstream is forced rearward. In a statement on 13th April 2020 Tecnam said, “The device is currently in the advanced testing phase in compliance with the applicable UNI EN standard to allow for use in a health environment, but it is already compliant for normal daily use in highly crowded spaces (such as supermarkets, open markets, public transport, etc.) to replace the standard bulky and movementrestricting face shields.” Tecnam managing director, Giovanni Pascale, commented, “In difficult times
Tecnam said that production of the new PPE will be in addition to their regular aircraft manufacturing activities, which “continue as scheduled”.
The manufacturer also said it is, “developing a range of further specific variants in order to provide protection for the company’s pilots, passengers, flight instructors and flight-school cadets.” The company is inviting people to make contact to inquire about specifications, prices, and availability.
Main Features of the Tecnam TFS (Face Shield):
1. Full protection for face: eyes, nose and mouth; 2. Reusable and recyclable; 3. Comfortable and ergonomic; 4. Able to be used while wearing spectacles; 5. Latex free and solvent free; 6. Washable and can be sterilized using ethylene oxide; 7. A surgical or FFP mask can be accommodated beneath the device.

UNVEILS 7-INCH FORMAT AERA 760 PORTABLE GPS
Garmin’s TeamX has launched the aera 760, a “rugged and large format portable navigator designed specifically for the cockpit,” with a list price of $1,599. The aera 760 is a dedicated portable aviation GPS unit with a bright, sunlight-readable 7-inch touchscreen display. It offers the option to load instrument approach procedures, arrivals and departures, approach chart overlay on the map. In addition, the unit can use Garmin Connext wireless connectivity and the integrate with modern Garmin avionics. “On behalf of our innovative and nimble TeamX gang of aviation enthusiasts, we’re excited to introduce the latest edition to the distinguished family of Garmin portable GPS products, the feature-packed aera 760,” said Carl Wolf, vice president of aviation sales and marketing. “For nearly three decades, Garmin has sold hundreds of thousands of portable GPS products for aircraft big and small. Building upon our portable aviation GPS line-up, the aera 760 has the most robust aviation feature set to-date, that is designed exclusively by pilots – for pilots.” Featuring a modern yet rugged design, the aera 760 is an all-in-one aviation portable complete with a built-in GPS/GLONASS receiver that is optimised for the cockpit. Its bright, 7-inch display can run on battery power for up to four hours on a single charge. Along the bezel, an industry-standard USB-C connection is used to charge and power the aera 760, while a microSD card slot allows pilots to load topography and street maps or use it to easily transfer user waypoints. The aera 760 features an intuitive user-interface resembling that of many other popular Garmin products such as the GTN Xi series, G3X Touch and Garmin Pilot allowing pilots to easily transition between multiple Garmin products in the cockpit. Capable of operating in harsh conditions, the aera 760 has also been tested and hardened to meet stringent temperature and vibration standards, says Garmin.
New aera Capabilities
New to the aera 760, pilots can load departures, arrivals and instrument approach procedures (IAPs) within a flight plan, which can be wirelessly transferred to a navigator in the cockpit. Once a procedure is loaded within the aera 760, pilots have the option to view the chart or they can overlay it on the moving map. IFR enroute charts, VFR sectionals and Garmin FliteCharts are also georeferenced, providing optimal situational awareness. Jeppesen electronic charts are also compatible with the aera 760 to “give customers worldwide access to instrument approach chart information.” In addition, victor airways, user-defined holds, and holds over an existing navigation fix can be entered into a flight plan, said the company. Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth allow the aera 760 to take advantage of Garmin Connext wireless connectivity inside and outside of the cockpit. When connected to Wi-Fi, pilots can easily download aviation database and software updates without the need to physically connect it to a computer. Prior to departure, pilots can also view worldwide weather information on the aera 760 when it’s connected to Wi-Fi. In the cockpit, it is capable of wirelessly connecting to select products such as the GTX 345 or the GDL 52 to display the benefits of Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) traffic, Flight Information Service-Broadcast (FIS-B) weather, SiriusXM aviation weather and more via Bluetooth. Pilots can hard-wire the aera 760’s power, audio and dual RS-232 connections or wirelessly connect by pairing with a Flight Stream 210/510. For aircraft flying in visual conditions, pilots can connect the aera 760 to some autopilots to fly lateral GPS and VNAV guidance. For example, pilots flying in visual conditions can fly a VNAV profile from their current altitude to pattern altitude using the aera 760 fully coupled to the autopilot. 3D Vision technology displays a virtual 3D perspective view of surrounding terrain, obstacles and airports, as well as a horizontal situation indicator (HSI) that is capable of showing lateral and vertical deviation bars. When the aera 760 is panel mounted or paired with a compatible attitude source such as a GDL 52 or GTX 345, pilots can view synthetic vision (SVX), which adds the display of back-up attitude information on the portable. Helicopter operators also have access to features tailored to their unique operations, such as WireAware wire-strike avoidance technology.

The importance of a title search is a topic we’ve covered a lot, and continue to – this step, which in our opinion should be the first, is still often overlooked for no good reason. Last year In Why Bother with a Title Search, we discussed just how detrimental an aircraft deal “done on a handshake” could be for a client – potentially resulting in a battle over ownership. This may be the worst-case scenario, but the other possibilities are less than desirable. If title issues are not discovered, a client may have to deal with the extra time and cost of a title clearing service, or an attorney, down the line. It could even kill the deal entirely just when you think the final step of exchanging funds is imminent. That is not the type of experience we want any potential aircraft buyer to have, but often that beautiful, sleek plane is a little blinding. It’s our job to make sure a client doesn’t get buyer’s remorse from those “blinders”. While buyers may be more reluctant to spend extra money up front on items like title searches, it’s crucial to impart how necessary it is to avoid having to pay even more later. For a minimal amount, buyers can find out the name of the registered owner of the aircraft and whether a bank or any other entity has an outstanding interest against the aircraft. This is why we continue to recommend starting with a title search – so any potential issues are cleared up. We want to protect a client from not only becoming a victim of an unscrupulous seller, but the increased time, cost and heartache that clouded titles can cause. Boeing Uses Schiebel Camcopter to Resupply Soldiers
CAMCOPTER-S 100
Boeing has demonstrated the use of a Schiebel Camcopter S-100 unmanned air vehicle (UAV) for transporting small cargo packages to soldiers in a recent US Army exercise. The demonstration was related to the US Army’s broad Future Vertical Lift modernisation programme. A Boeing team flew the S-100 on 31 missions, delivering 726kg (1,600lb) of “simulated blood and ammunition” via a cargo winch during the military exercise. For the missions demonstrated, the cargo weight was typically about 45kg. The S-100 is capable of carrying 34kg of payload for more than 6h, according to Schiebel. It can take a maximum payload of 50kg. The S-100 is an unmanned helicopter, typically used for civilian surveying or military reconnaissance work, that is designed and built by Schiebel, a German company.
Heavy Fuel Acceptance Tests in Australia Meanwhile Schiebel has successfully completed acceptance tests for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) of its new Schiebel-designed heavy fuel S2 engine for its Camcopter S-100. Building on 12 years of experience developing engines for the Camcopter S-100 system and the lessons learnt from extensive operations worldwide, Schiebel has engineered a new proprietary heavy fuel engine, the S2. Delivered as a next generation replacement for the current propulsion unit, the S2 further increases the overall capability of the system. The enhancements offered by the S2 engine will enable the RAN to continue to expand its test and

evaluation programme, examining advanced Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) UAS capabilities ahead of the Sea 129 Phase 5 Programme. A comprehensive series of test flight activities demonstrated both the endurance, and Maximum Take Off Weight (MTOW) – with multiple payloads – providing the evidence and assurance that the Camcopter S-100 fulfils the requirements of the RAN. Throughout the extensive tests, the Camcopter S-100 system was equipped with an L3 Harris Wescam MX-10 real-time Electro-Optical/Infra-Red (EO/IR) camera, an Automatic Identification System (AIS), an L3 Harris Bandit transceiver and a Mode-S Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) transponder. This unique configuration provides operators with the capability to locate and confirm the identity of vessels at sea, as well as transmitting the information in real time to users equipped with Rover remote video terminals, said Schiebel. The new lightweight heavy fuel engine is initially cleared for JP-5 (F-44) and JetA1 fuels with other fuel types to be approved in future. Of significant note, this new engine increases the operational performance and maintainability of the S100 and has sufficient capacity to meet anticipated future market growth needs. “Given the single fuel policy adopted by the world’s Navies, we have responded to the requirement and have now developed, tested and produced our own Schiebel-designed heavy fuel engine for the Camcopter S-100 system,” said Hans Georg Schiebel, Chairman of the Schiebel Group. “We are thrilled to have successfully completed the acceptance activities of the new capability for the Royal Australian Navy.”

What is a Multi-Mission Aircraft? (Part 2) In this series, Patrick Ryan explores what are the primary aircraft
flown today in Multi-Mission or Aerial Work operations, and how
they differ from General Aviation and commercial air transportation platforms (For Part 1, see May 2020 edition, page
33). This month, the focus is on what are the general differences between today's manned & unmanned Multi-Mission aircraft? As discussed in part one of this series, when it comes to which pillar of aviation (General Aviation, Commercial Air Transportation, and Multi-Mission) utilises the most types of aircraft in the world, MultiMission operations wins hands-down since these have leveraged, and continue to leverage, the many different types of aircraft designs or classifications that make-up the entire spectrum of the aircraft world. And with the introduction of unmanned technology and platforms has expanded three-fold the depth and width of Multi-Mission platforms available or used in providing specialised aerial services around the world. To add more perspective to the original question:
What are the General Differences Between Today's Manned & Unmanned Multi-Mission Aircraft? The obvious technical answer would be an aviator controlling the platform onboard or offboard the vehicle to accomplish a specific service other than transporting people or cargo.
Even though both can, or have, leveraged the different classes of aircraft designs or technology, across today's Multi-Mission aircraft market the general differences between these two types of aircraft are as follows: Size & Weight: The size and weight of the ordinary civil Multi-Mission unmanned aircraft can range from 51cm to 2m in size, with weights between 5kg to 50kg. By contrast, the size and weight of the average civil Multi-Mission manned aircraft can range from a parking area size of 300sq.ft. to 8,000sq.ft., with Max Takeoff Weights (MTOW) between less than 12,500lbs and up to 41,000lbs. Operating Procedures: Take-off and Landing operations and locations are more decentralised with civil Multi-Mission unmanned aircraft while manned Multi-Mission aircraft tend to require a centralised infrastructure of airfields or approved landing locations. However, unmanned Multi-Mission aircraft routinely operate Line-of-Sight (LOS) of the operator and the take-off/landing location, while manned Multi-Mission aircraft operate Beyond-Line-of-Sight (BLOS) of any AIRSHIP ADVERTISING
usable airfield or operating location. Overall, today's civil unmanned aircraft are dependent on radio links/frequencies for command and control of the vehicle while manned aircraft are not. Cost: The cost of purchasing, operating and sustaining an unmanned Multi-Mission aircraft vs. a manned aircraft can be substantial. The cost of operating a manned Multi-Mission aircraft is higher. For example, the average cost to purchase an unmanned aircraft designed to conduct aerial photography or surveying operations can start around $5,000 while buying a manned (fixed-wing, singleengine) aircraft starts at around $300,000. Besides the difference in purchase cost, there is a difference between ancillary equipment and systems, storage, fuel, maintenance-inspection, insurance, and manpower to operate. Even though there are some significant differences between today's manned and unmanned Multi-Mission aircraft, the good thing is that the differences mitigate the "one size fits all" solution regarding Multi-Mission operations and the industry as a whole. With this, the specific performance advantages of both manned and unmanned Multi-Mission aircraft can be leveraged to produce the right result.
What are the Performance Advantages of Today's Manned Multi-Mission aircraft?
As with unmanned aircraft, manned Multi-Mission aircraft provide their own unique operating and performance solution to accomplish a specific task which other aircraft configurations can't effectively accomplish or don't have the right "Cost to Benefit" ratio to operate. Considering the mainstream types of manned aircraft on today's market (like Super Cubs, Cessna C-172s, Diamond DA-42s, EC-135, Dash-7s and more), some of the general performance advantages these aircraft have over current available commercial unmanned vehicles are: •
Higher:
•
Faster:
•
Wider:
•
Heavier:
They have the performance, and routine access to established airspace They have the speed to travel a long distance in a shorter period They have a wider area of operation or coverage, and the means to travel to multiple distant operating locations in a single flight operation They have a better payload and powergenerating capability.
DIAMOND DA42 MPP
DJI - Mavic 2, Intel - Falcon 8+System, Censys Sentaero v2VTOL, Blimpworks Airships - Aeroblimp-23) are: They have the agility to operate closer to objects on the Earth’s surface • Slower: They have the velocity to either go fastand-short or slow-and-long in a specified period • Narrower: They have a narrower area of operation or coverage, and the means to operate in very localised/enclosed spaces • Lighter: They can carry smaller precision payloads for specialised tasked without excess delivery support (i.e., less aircraft, more kit). • Lower:
In Summary
As you can see, Multi-Mission aircraft are in a class of their own. Because there's more to this sector of aviation than just transporting people and luggage, the stakeholders of Multi-Mission aviation have leveraged pretty much every type of aircraft from unmanned tethered balloons to manned highaltitude jet aircraft to accomplish a specific or unique task. The reason for this is that the different types of aircraft used today have different operational and performance capabilities. When it comes to manned and unmanned platforms, the differences can be substantial. However, the difference is a benefit to the MultiMission sector. This diversity of technologies allows for a better ‘fit to purpose’ solution. As for the future, the basic technology of aircraft (fixed-wing, rotor, lighter-than-air) might not change, but other components, elements, sub-systems, and operating procedures will. With technology moving at a quick pace and the innovative spirit many have in the Multi-Mission aviation sector, we'll naturally see some of today's operating differences and advantages of the various Multi-Mission aircraft change. Again, this is a good thing for the Multi-Mission aircraft community and the world. INTEL FALCON 8+ SYSTEM
What are the performance advantages of today's Unmanned Multi-Mission aircraft?
Interestingly, the performance advantages of today's civil professional unmanned Multi-Mission aircraft are, in many aspects, the opposite of manned aircraft. They now fill a gap in areas that manned Multi-Mission aircraft cannot reach. Some of the general performance advantages of unmanned Multi-Mission aircraft (such as the JUNE 2020 AERIAL WORK EUROPE 23

Micro Vortex Generators Micro Vortex Generators are small aluminium blades placed in a spanwise line aft of the leading edge of the wing and on tail surfaces. They control airflow over the upper surface of the wing by creating vortices that energize the boundary layer. This results in improved performance and control authority at low airspeeds and high angles of attack.

Atlas Air Service has extended the scope of its maintenance approvals with the addition of certified maintenance services for the Cessna Citation Latitude. The Cessna Citation Latitude from Textron Aviation entered the market in 2015 and has been named the industry’s most popular midsize jet, with 58 aircraft delivered in 2019. The aircraft’s maintenance comprises all overhaul, repair and modification services — work which can only be carried out by organisations approved by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). In order to obtain this approval under EASA Part 145, Atlas Air Service has successfully demonstrated its capability to the German Federal Aviation Authority (LBA) and its received the approval in late March.
“We have implemented this extension of our maintenance capability upon a recent customer request! Responding very quickly to customer requirements with effective solutions is our key to success,” said Mr. Serkan Akin, CAMO Manager at Atlas Air Service. “In this case it is also a perfect addition to our existing maintenance offering. We look back on over 40 years of experience in the maintenance of Cessna business jets, we are the experts in the market and authorised to maintain most of the Cessna business jet models. We are very pleased to be able to offer our customers this additional service.” Atlas Air Service has more than 50 years of experience with service and maintenance work as well as the trading of various aircraft types, primarily from the manufacturers Textron Aviation and Embraer.

Air Alliance Medflight Provides Global Air Ambulance Transportation
COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic has brought specialist operators to the fore. Business Aviation has a vital role to play in the fight against Coronavirus, which has been increasingly affecting our everyday lives. Thousands of passengers have been left stranded around the globe, among them patients in severe medical conditions — including those suffering from acute COVID-19 infections. They require transport on specialised air ambulance aircraft.
How COVID-19 travel restrictions affect global air ambulance flights
What is the best solution to fly a patient home?
Nonetheless, these days, in the lights of the Coronavirus crisis, air operators face new challenges when setting out to save a patient’s life. Commercial flights for crew changes are no longer available and few airports still allow crews to stay overnight. Especially for long distances, these challenges can be overcome by using a long-range jet like the Challenger 604. This helps to minimise stops en route and to carry all the required crew when setting out.
They can hardly be answered by Dr. Google — sound advice by a team of experts is paramount.
Transport of contagious patients: Safety is key
The good news first: while a lot of countries no longer allow foreign nationals to enter as they have closed their borders entirely, air ambulance flights are still largely considered humanitarian missions by the authorities and have better access to international airports.
Selecting an air ambulance company to transport your loved one can be a stressful and confusing effort. Which company should you choose? Is it safe? What is a fair price for an air medical flight? Quick availability, excellent quality, safety and cost management of aeromedical transports are the key concerns.
“The purchase of our hi-tech, modern isolation transport system, ‘EpiShuttle’, allows Air Alliance to transport highly contagious patients, including those affected by COVID-19”, Eva Kluge explained. “The EpiShuttle provides maximum patient safety and comfort while allowing continuous critical care and treatment on board”.
Founded in 1993, Air Alliance is a leading European air ambulance operator, based out of Germany and the UK. With a fleet of 11 owned, fully ICU-equipped Learjets and Challenger 604s, highly skilled medical teams and modern mobile medical equipment, Air Alliance is ready to set out for the most challenging missions around the globe. “Every year, we transport some 900 patients from across the globe of all age groups, including premature babies,” said Eva Kluge, Chief Commercial Officer of Air Alliance. “At least 30 percent of them are intensive care patients on ventilation. Healthy companions and families may travel along as long as it is safe from a medical and aviation perspective. “

Aero-Dienst Offers Ferry Flights for Maintenance Customers & Mobile Repair Teams In these unprecedented times mobility of key decision-makers can be vital. Therefore, business aircraft availability needs to be ensured by effective maintenance support including the ferrying of aircraft to/from base maintenance locations, and swift transport of Mobile Repair Teams. During the Covid-19 pandemic Aero-Dienst has been providing its value-added service to maintenance customers by giving them access to its Nuremberg, Germany-based executive charter fleet for safe and direct crew transportation between the Service Centre there and customers’ home bases. For this purpose, Aero-Dienst uses its Learjet 45XR and 60 jets. The Mobile Repair Teams of Aero-Dienst also have access to the charter fleet so that AOG support can continue to be provided on site in times of unavailable airline travel. Based on decades of experience in air ambulance operations, Aero-Dienst has implemented “extensive measures” to
safeguard the health of its customers and employees. Aircraft are being flown exclusively by Aero-Dienst’s own pilots; and aircraft cabins are being disinfected following each flight. “Now, more than ever, the business aviation infrastructure remains available and operational to enable people we all rely on to manage the crisis,” said AeroDienst CEO Viktor Peters. With more than a 60-year track record in maintaining, operating, selling and managing a wide range of business and ambulance aircraft, Aero-Dienst says it is “one of the leading business aviation companies in Europe.” It employs more than 330 aviation professionals who focus on precision, reliability and absolute customer satisfaction, says Aero-Dienst, which claims to have earned “a worldwide reputation for excellence in best-value-for-money aviation services – customer-focused, transparent and fair.”

What’s Popular with Light Turbine Aircraft Buyers? Providing insights on the market sectors his company specializes in, Lone Mountain Aircraft’s
Mark Rogers shares observations on light turbine and piston business aircraft market demand… Linking the Ownership Upgrade Chain
Though there is much uncertainty in light of the coronavirus pandemic embroiling much of the world, the Business Aviation community continues to try and function as best it can. Hope abounds that a semblance of normality can be regained relatively quickly in the wake of the virus.
The piston market has long provided a supply line of owner/operators who initially use their piston aircraft for business purposes before moving into turbine powered aircraft as their mission needs expand. Lone Mountain Aircraft’s sales business lists several high-end piston aircraft for sale. One of the company’s areas of expertise is its high-performance, owner-flown Cirrus models. “Cirrus, with its one-of-a-kind whole airplane parachute system, has attracted new pilots and first-time owners for years,” Rogers notes.
But what exactly was that normality? What was the market looking like before the current challenges? “We got off to a great start this year,” says Mark Rogers, president and founder of Lone Mountain Aircraft. “In fact, we had a record Q1 in terms of sales volume, but numbers began reducing heading into Q2.” Lone Mountain was founded with the belief that buying and selling aircraft should be “turbulencefree”, and the company aims to provide a complete range of aircraft sales and acquisition services to meet the needs of individuals and companies across the US and in Europe. Discussing the marketplace, Rogers notes, “The total fleet for sale is only 10% but there is a much higher percentage of older model aircraft on the market. On the other hand, newly-designed aircraft that require less maintenance and have easily upgradeable platforms are still in the single digit fleet-for-sale territory.” One significant factor impacting the sales marketplace pre-coronavirus was the aviation insurance market, according to Rogers. “This past year we’ve seen two clients in the owner-flown market purchase pre-owned instead of new, due to a lack of insurance availability for single-pilot operations with adequate hull coverage.” Although insurance premiums are increasing for all operators, the single-pilot/Light Jet market seems to be the most significantly impacted, Rogers adds, pointing out that the light turbine market his company serves has, nevertheless, “shown remarkable resilience in demand”.
34 TURBINE BUYER EUROPE JUNE 2020
MARK ROGERS
What is Today’s Buyer Searching For?
Today’s buyer of modern light turbine aircraft has a higher expectation for the technology installed in the aircraft than ever before, Rogers notes. “Buyers and sellers use a different vocabulary than in the past,” he reveals. “Specifically they’re referring to the avionics and safety equipment that has debuted over the last few years. “Today's buyer is more likely to search for an aircraft that’s either equipped or upgradeable with such features as auto-throttle, emergency auto land, fully coupled VNAV, emergency descent mode, and a list of other features.” And rather than specific types of aircraft selling more quickly than others, it appears buyers are ultimately value-motivated, which could explain the more robust pre-owned market. “Aircraft that are priced too high will languish on the market despite a healthy overall marketplace,” Rogers adds.
www.lonemountainaircraft.com
“Piston aircraft provide an excellent starting point, but many times once a business owner gains the experience and confidence needed, they become intrigued by the idea of an airplane to take them higher and faster.” Generally, he explains, pilots who own aircraft are “usually looking for what's next every three years or so”. Conveniently for those pilots, Lone Mountain Aircraft is a leading reseller of the Cirrus Vision Jet, and also offers expertise on its team in Embraer, Bombardier Learjet, Textron, Daher TBM and Piper products to help clients move into the business jet or turboprop that will suit their step-up needs. In addition to its aircraft sales services, Lone Mountain Aircraft provides maintenance services, and also founded AvCap Financial. “AvCap was established to provide innovative financing solutions to help our clients get in the air faster,” Rogers says. “It’s branded separately so customers understand they don't have to purchase through Lone Mountain to use our financing.” These are complex times, and nobody is in a position to predict with certainty how they will play out just yet. With increasingly sophisticated demand from the buyers in the markets the company serves, it’s clear Lone Mountain Aircraft has positioned itself well for the future, though.

Leonardo to Acquire Kopter Italian aircraft/helicopter manufacturer Leonardo has purchased 100 percent of the Swiss helicopter company Kopter Group from Lynwood (Schweiz) AG. Leonardo said the move would allows it to “further strengthen [our] worldwide leadership and position in the rotorcraft sector… leveraging innovation, new capabilities and engineering skills which have been developed by the young, agile Swiss company.

“Kopter’s SH09, a new single engine helicopter, is a perfect fit for Leonardo’s state of the art product range offering opportunities for future technological developments.” It also noted that the Swiss company’s competencies will “boost future developments towards more disruptive technologies, mission capabilities and performances, including innovative hybrid/electrical propulsion solutions.” Leonardo confirmed that the acquisition replaces the planned investment aimed at the development of a new single-engine helicopter. “Within the Helicopter Division of Leonardo, Kopter will act as an autonomous legal entity and competence center working in coordination with us,” said the Italian company. The purchase price, on a cash and debt-free basis, consists of a $185 million fixed component plus an earn-out mechanism linked to certain milestones over the life of the programme, starting from 2022. The closing of the transaction is “subject to certain conditions” and is expected to take place during the first quarter of 2020.
innovative company as an integral part of our worldleading helicopter business. It complements perfectly our existing product portfolio adding a promising rotorcraft that will greatly benefit from our industrial know-how, service and training experience and commercial network.” Marina Groenberg, CEO of Lynwood, said: “Lynwood is very proud to have strongly supported the development of Kopter and its SH09 programme over the past ten years. It is now the right time for Leonardo to take over as they are a perfect match for Kopter at this stage of development.” Kopter’s CEO Andreas Loewenstein added: “Kopter is very excited to have won with Leonardo a solid industrial investor. Within Leonardo, we get the support to finalise our development on various fronts while keeping the ability to remain the agile singleengine pioneer that we are.” Swiss-based Kopter has been operating since 2009, originally designated Marenco SwissHelicopter and rebranded in 2018 as Kopter Group AG. The SH09 single-engine helicopter programme has been in development with various enhancements having been identified during the intensive flight test campaign, which has been carried out by the third prototype (P3) in Mollis, Switzerland and Pozzallo, Italy.
Alessandro Profumo, Leonardo CEO, said: “By this deal we confirm our commitment to strengthening Leonardo’s core business and sustaining our leadership in key areas. With this acquisition we will bring on board innovative skills and technologies that will complement our own and will also contribute to keeping us at the forefront of innovationand competitiveness whilst maintaining our financial solidity.”
“These optimisations include a new main rotor configuration and redesigned tail rotor, an enhanced design for the gearbox, a new shape for the upper cowlings, modified landing skids, an optimized fuel system allowing to have a larger cabin and an additional seat, as well as a new aerodynamic package to enhance the ride quality and stability of the SH09,” said the companies.
Gian Piero Cutillo, managing director Leonardo Helicopters, said: “We are proud to welcome this

Air Covers Wins Prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise Air Covers, which supplies bespoke protective covers for the aerospace and marine sectors, has won a “Queen’s Award for Enterprise for International Trade” — the most prestigious award a UK company can receive, with winners being approved by Her Majesty The Queen.
The business supports military, emergency services, commercial and private aircraft sectors, the off-shore industry and super-yachts. As well as being a regular supplier to the UK MoD, Air Covers has a diverse customer list, which includes air forces in Spain, Germany, Sweden, Italy and the Middle East, along with prominent helicopter operators including Bristow, CHC and Babcock. In the corporate market, Starspeed Helicopters (part of the Luxaviation Group) and Luviair are long-established customers. Air Covers protects every component part of a helicopter, fixed wing aircraft or superyacht, said John Pattinson. This reduces the cost of maintenance, helps maintain residual values, increases availability and aids safety. In the helicopters market in particular Air Covers is the market leader, having

“We are delighted to have been chosen for this award,” said John Pattinson, Air Covers managing director. “It is a terrific achievement for our amazing team who learned of this win today. Such an accolade is especially welcome to us, during this time of international uncertainty, and we hope it will further drive our business forward.” Air Covers is based in Wrexham, North Wales and was founded by John and Sasha Pattinson in 2006. Their first customer was for the smallest piston helicopter. Today, they make covers for everything from Apache helicopters to commercial airliners. In 2019 Air Covers supplied protective covers to 29 countries.

designed covers for most types — from the Robinson R22 to the Kaman K-MAX. Working closely with OEM’s or MRO engineering teams and private owners, Air Covers laser-scans aircraft and designs protection for every potential user requirement. A customer sends a photograph of their aircraft and in the same day the team sends back a 3D definition exactly matching the antennae and airframe. The company’s CNC machines then cut out fabric to create a fully customised product. “Giving the customer bespoke quality and short lead times at a good price is what drives our company,” said John Pattinson. “We are very proud to play a role in reducing the maintenance burden.” Sasha Pattinson added: “As an SME with just 12 employees, we represent the backbone of British business and are proud to be in demand across the world.”

Companies Could Receive Insurance Rebates But not Until After the Crisis… With many businesses effectively closed, and struggling to make plans to open properly, Approach Aviation Insurance, a broker, says insurance companies are showing little inclination to offer discounts to struggling aviation businesses covering the period of zero or very little activity that marks the COVID-19 crisis. However, Approach Aviation/E&G Chairman Chris Varley comments: “The good news is that underwriters are indicating that in the future, possibly early next year, when they can assess the extent of reductions in claims versus income from policy renewals, they may be in a position to return a proportion of customer premiums, via brokers.” He stresses, however, that this will be on a case-by-case basis for bespoke insurance products, like the ones E&G offers. ABOUT APPROACH AVIATION INSURANCE Approach Aviation Insurance is a leading aviation insurance broker specialising in insurance liability business cover including professional indemnity; cover for buildings including hangars and workshops; and for aircraft whether operating commercially, privately, or for training. It is a trading name of Export & General insurance Services Limited (E&G), The Clubhouse, Wimbledon Rugby Football Club Limited, Barham Road, London SW20 0ET. For further information please contact
Chris Varley, Chairman, E&G. Tel: +44 (0)20 8036 5706 E-mail: chris.varley@exportandgeneral.co.uk www.approachaviation-insurance.co.uk
Varley says Approach Aviation Insurance’s clients have been keen to find out if they can go on lower risk cover, for example for aircraft which are inactive. In some cases aircraft have been required to fly for maintenance reasons occasionally during the lockdown so cannot have flying cover removed, while others could possibly expect premiums to be halved during that period. “Once insurers can assess their risk, claims and income from this period, it’s my belief that they
www.approachaviation-insurance.co.uk
will consider customer requests for partial refunds or credits towards their renewal,” said Varley. “While we will do our best for our customers to negotiate this with underwriters, there are no guarantees,” he added. E&G also offers specialized travel insurance products and is very aware of the mainstream market where some companies are struggling to recoup losses from business trips and travel where the reason for cancellation was COVID19 disruption. Varley says that after the SARS outbreak in 2003 many insurers specifically excluded pandemics, and getting new policy including this cover for business trips could be expensive, or impossible. The company has also had queries from clients about business interruption insurance, which is proving to be a controversial area with some group action litigation being covered in the media. Varley says businesses need to check their insurance policy terms and conditions before considering whether they can challenge a rejection of insurance. For the same reason as stated above, most policies will not cover the current COVID-19 outbreak, but are limited to the interruption of business where the shutdown of premises is due to a case that happened at the premises..

ENGINE7.qxp_GAB Master LEFT 06/05/2020 11:40 Page 1
Don’t Ground Run Piston Engines! Engines need to be looked after carefully in times when aircraft are not being flown. However, ground runs can damage an engine rather than help to preserve it. Therefore, the best way to keep engines in good condition is to take them for a flight so each engine is brought right up to its design operating temperature. There is an assumption by some in the GA community that ground running will “wash” the engine from the inside and leave a layer of protective oil on all metal surfaces. This is a misconception: ground engine runs are strongly discouraged by engine manufacturers as it leads to a rapid increase in internal corrosion. When you run an engine, combustion residues end up in the oil pan, where they are covered by the oil. In fact, in the depths of the engine, there is oil, residue, acid and water. Yes, water! A hot engine, when the mixture lever is pulled to turn the engine off, contains hot humid air. The engine cools quickly, ambient temperature air enters the still warm engine, heat ups and the humidity condenses, producing water droplets. At each engine stop, a certain amount of water is “created” which cannot escape from the crankcase. The water naturally goes directly to the bottom of the crankcase — where it is isolated and cannot evaporate. Also, incomplete combustion causes combustion residues to appear. In Avgas there is lead, but also carbon, various more or less carbonised chemicals, and acid residues. Some remains trapped inside the engine and finds its way to the oil pan too. Depending on the mixture settings and operating temperatures, the amount of waste varies enormously. With cool CHTs (350°F and below) there is more waste and the shorter the operating time, the less of these deposits are burned off. An engine which runs for a short time at low temperature fouls much faster than an engine which runs for a long time at its ideal speed of rotation and at nominal temperature. However, another new belief has spread in recent years in the world of general aviation. This belief says, “The lower the CHT (temperature of the cylinder heads), the better it is for the health of the engine”. This is another aberration! An engine is designed to run within well-defined parameter limits. The CHT is ultimately an imprecise indication. It gives an average temperature of the metal, but in no way is it a precise indication of the temperature variations observed inside the cylinder. A cold mixture is injected into the combustion chamber, whereas a few milliseconds earlier an explosion has just occurred. Can you imagine the temperature differentials inside the cylinder when this cycle occurs several times per second? We have already admitted that there are combustion residues which are produced in a cycle. We also accepted the fact that some of it vaporised through the exhaust valve. But the rest, what becomes of it? Ideally, it is burned by the rise in temperature during the next explosion cycle. But if this does not reach a sufficient temperature, because the stoichiometric ratio of 15 parts of air for one part of fuel is not respected, or because the power displayed is low, with a low outside temperature and an excessively rich mixture (or any combination of these parameters), the temperature generated will not allow the residues to burn thoroughly. Heat burns residues, so allow your engine to reach the temperature at which this natural phenomenon will occur. Another very important factor is the temperature of the oil. Synthetic, semi-synthetic or mineral oils are designed to achieve their lubricating properties within a given temperature range. Too cold, they are not effective enough; too hot, they lose some of their faculties.
It's best to either store your aircraft properly, or fly it. Engine oil therefore needs to reach a certain temperature to be fully effective. The oil usually contains chemical additives intended to promote “washing” or thoroughly burn combustion residues, transforming them into ashes (“Ashless Dispersant Oil”). These additives reach their full effectiveness within a given temperature range. Give the oil a chance to play its role to its full extent! What causes corrosion in an engine is the mixing of acid and water on metal surfaces that weren’t treated against corrosion. In other words, the cylinders, the pistons, the connecting rods, the camshaft, and the crankshaft are likely to see corrosion appear. And this, despite the nitriding of certain parts. When you perform a ground engine run of twenty minutes, the rise in oil temperature is not sufficient to cause all the water in the mixture to evaporate. This is understandable: for water to come out of the engine for good, it must be in the vapour state. The most efficient way to do this is to bring the temperature above 100°C at sea level. We will remember that the boiling point of water depends on atmospheric pressure, therefore on altitude... Oil, gradually broken down by the combined actions of water, acids and combustion residues, turns into a sticky material, incapable of lubricating anything. To avoid this, with engines devoid of any electronic injection and ignition system, only one solution: drain the oil regularly, change the filter at the same time and run the engine in flight and at nominal temperatures. If all this turns out to be impossible, there remains the storage solution (see below). Flying the aircraft at altitude where the boiling point of water comes down is the most expeditious way to get rid of the water in the engine. For example, at 9,000 feet the oil only needs to reach 89°C instead of 100°C for the water to be transformed into vapour (assuming pressure setting 1013.25 hpa). If the air pressure drops, the boiling point will drops even more. Lycoming and Continental recommend that, at least once a month, you should fly the aircraft for a period sufficient for the engine to reach normal operating temperatures. This allows the engine oil reach its ideal operating temperature; allows the water contained in the oil pan to evaporate; and the CHT temperatures to get high enough for maximum combustion residue to be removed. Returning from the flight, the water has completely or almost disappeared from the oil pan, the combustion residues generated by the flight have been pyrolysed, and part of the “grime” contained in the oil has done the same.
The bottom of the crankcase is cleaner, and most of the acids have disappeared. A relatively clean protective film of oil has settled on the inside of the engine. A little condensation will form, but, the whole circuit being cleaner, and the amount of water negligible, the engine will stay healthy for much longer and mostly corrosion free internally. By making repeated engine runs on the ground and leaving the engine off for a significant period after that, the engine is not cooled normally either. Air is missing due to the missing relative speed of the aircraft in flight, so that engine parts and oil will not heat up homogeneously. Cylinder temperatures can soar, while the oil temperature remains much lower. In twenty minutes, it will be difficult to raise the oil temperature to the value necessary to evaporate the water without raising the temperature of the cylinders too high. The engine will naturally run “full rich” on the ground, for a relatively long period of time. So, with a too-rich mixture we will foul the spark plugs and create more combustion residues. Also, if a little corrosion exists in the barrels of the cylinders, the scraping effect will eliminate the oil film that was in place after the last flight, which had been providing protection still. As long as it’s just surface corrosion, it’s not a big deal. The detached corrosion will end up in the bottom of the engine, which is why it is recommended to perform an oil change immediately after an engine has not been running for a period of 1-3 months. Airplanes exposed to sea air or a hot and humid climate should fly for an hour or two, followed by a complete oil change. An oil filter and 8 litres of oil are cheaper than a cylinder or a camshaft. Storage is better than running an engine on the ground. It should be filled with a special oil, following the recommended manufacturer’s procedure. If you know that an aircraft will be immobilised for two months or more, storage is the best solution. And to resume flights, a mechanic should prepare the aircraft and make sure that everything is ok. And for aircraft engines that are based in a marine or a hot and humid climate, storage should occur as soon as possible. In summary, please, for the health of your engine, do not make ground engine runs repeatedly! Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.
