Travellers turn to aeroplanes as a means of transportation – a typical scene at an airport in the early days of commercial aviation a century ago when passengers and freight were carried alongside. A lady travels as befits her social standing: Adeline Gill, the queen of English fashion, is given a formal reception on her arrival in Berlin for the German fashion industry ball.

It all began with a plan: to build an airworthy replica of a Junkers F 13! And the impossible was achieved — the aircraft was rolled out six years later. Before that could happen, extensive research was needed, in museums, talking to historians and around the world in the most unusual places. Complete plans were nowhere to be found, but laser scans, done on the few remaining museum pieces, brought the breakthrough.

We are in the year 1919 and normality is beginning to take hold of everyday life once again. But, something had changed drastically... Aeroplanes, invented before WW1 and misused during said war, are now being used to the advantage of humanity instead of against it — civil air traffic is born! In a sheer incredible feat, a young engineer brought the world’s first all-metal aircraft, the Junkers F 13, from the drawing board to its maiden flight in a matter of just a few months. Thus, under the guidance of Professor Hugo Junkers, 33-year-old Otto Reuter revolutionised aircraft construction. The six-seater Junkers F 13 is considered to be the precursor of modern commercial aircraft: While the competition was still operating aircraft made of wood with the fuselage and wings covered with cotton, the Junkers F 13 conquered the world of commercial aviation. As an ambassador of peace, the aircraft caused a sensation all over the world and opened up new fields of application. Due to its all-metal construction, the aeroplane could now be operated in subtropical countries, whereas past models made with wood adhesives would not have withstood the weather. The aircraft was also able to endure the often unpredictable weather in Central Europe, as it did not need a protective hangar — advantages highlighted in the original Junkers sales brochure.

and metallurgist Alfred Wilm accidentally

discovered duralumin more than a century ago. The metal alloy had the advantage of high

stability combined with low weight. This material was an inspiration to Hugo Junkers who gave the initial impetus for its use in aircraft

construction. The alloy, shaped as a corrugated sheet, achieved a torsional stiffness that was crucial, above all, for wing construction.

Kaelin Aero Technologies GmbH, based in the German Black Forest, is a household name in the aviation industry. Dominik Kaelin and his team were able to reconstruct the corrugated sheet base material and thus overcome the next hurdle. The body shell of the cell manufactured by Kaelin now had to be fitted with an engine, propeller and controls and certification had to be arranged. For this, Naef Flugmotoren AG in Dübendorf, Switzerland, was engaged. After three years of research, development and construction, what many believed to be impossible came true in 2016: a Junkers F 13 actually took off again and has fascinated people ever since with its incomparable silhouette when up in the air!

ADS-B is Common Sense For Europe’s Skies

By Jon Roper, Marketing Manager, Trig Avionics Limited. ADS-B, or Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast, is a hot topic. This emerging surveillance capability uses a transmitter (usually a transponder) in combination with a GPS position source to boost an aircraft’s electronic visibility. ADS-B is being adopted by pilots in Europe, who are now benefiting from improved situational awareness.

Mode S - The Foundation of ADS-B Out

Flying with a Mode S transponder is the established way to make you visible to ATC, commercial and military traffic. Mode S also benefits the pilot — by easing the transition through controlled airspace. However, by adding GPS position data to an ADS-B capable transponder, when suitably configured the output transmission becomes ADS-B Out. Once equipped with ADS-B Out, other aircraft equipped with traffic receivers (known as ADS-B In) can see a real-time electronic display of ADS-B Out transmitting aircraft in their vicinity. A traffic display, such as a tablet or cockpit display, provides a view of the surrounding skies. This significantly improves a pilot’s situational awareness and is a genuine aid to collision avoidance — particularly in VFR conditions. Most general aviation pilots will be able to share stories about the aircraft that they didn’t see, or the one that got too close! While ADS-B is no substitute for a visual look-out, it can be a useful supplementary tool. Thankfully, mid-air collisions are rare, but maintaining safe separation and getting an enhanced awareness ‘electronically’ now has the potential to further improve safety.

Is There a Mandate for ADS-B in Europe?

If ADS-B Out is about being seen and ADS-B In is about seeing other aircraft, what do I need to install in my aircraft? And what is the regulatory position in Europe? In the United States all aircraft that wish to fly in ADSB airspace need to be ADS-B Out equipped, under the 2020 ADS-B mandate. In Europe there is no mandate for general aviation and EASA’s philosophy for ADS-B is to encourage voluntary adoption and use by GA pilots. The objective is to improve safety and reduce the risk of collision. Voluntary use of ADS-B in Europe does not afford any privileges to airspace access over Mode S.

How Can I Fit ADS-B Out Equipment?

By far the most practical means to become ADS-B equipped is to use your existing Mode S (ADS-B Out capable) transponder as the hub for electronic visibility. Last month EASA released CS-STAN Revision 3, which simplifies the installation process for ADS-B Out and allows the use of existing GPS technology. As an example, an EASA certified aircraft with a transponder from a supplier such as Trig now only needs an additional two wires to be connected from an existing GPS to become ADS-B Out capable. The installation and paperwork can all be completed locally via an approved facility; your aircraft will then be more visible using ADS-B Out.

See and avoid is now supplemented by sense and avoid, for aircraft beyond visual range or which may otherwise not be seen until it is too late.

An alternative option when no existing GPS is available is a TN72. This GPS position source can be used with the transponder to achieve ADS-B Out. Type certified, light-sport aircraft, gliders and microlights can all benefit from using the TN72, which costs only €330 (ex-tax).

Some pilots may decide to invest in a cheaper, uncertified GPS solution for their ADS-B set up. One significant drawback of using an uncertified GPS is that some popular traffic devices will not see you, because they are designed to reject low-quality, uncertified GPS information. The TN72, in contrast, uses a certified GPS chipset, which makes it visible to all ADS-B In traffic receivers. Trig offers two types of GPS antenna for the TN72, depending upon the type of installation.

Get Equipped But Keep a Good Look Out!

As ADS-B experts, Trig Avionics played a key role in Project EVA in 2016. This was a European Union backed, NATS-led technology demonstration project and involved real-world flight trials using ADS-B equipment. The objective was to demonstrate the use of ADS-B technology in various aircraft types and flight confliction scenarios. While it was clear that electronic conspicuity provided benefits, technical performance and human factors were also assessed. Interestingly, this showed a potential to rely upon electronic traffic information, even at the risk of compromising the critical visual look-out. Pilot training in the practical use of ADS-B equipment and growing the level of voluntary equipage within GA were two important Project EVA recommendations. Using ADS-B equipment in the right way is fundamental, and getting more aircraft to participate will deliver genuine safety improvements. It’s easy to boost your visibility and improve the safety of yourself and your passengers. U.S. pilots who now fly all the time with ADS-B claim that they simply wouldn’t fly without it.

The first transmitter is now live from a location in Billund Airport and the plan is to setup up an additional 4-5 transmitters so that all of Denmark will be covered. The signal can be received by modern panel mounted avionics able to receive ADS-B signals or by small portable receivers which can display the information on, for instance, an iPad. Popular navigation software like Foreflight, SkyDemon and EasyVFR all support the technology and will display both traffic and weather directly in the app.

Slovenian manufacturer Pipistrel has held discussions with the Civil Aviation Authority of Mongolia about the possibility of creating a final assembly line for the Pipistrel Virus SW-121 in the country, along with a flight training school and maintenance department.

The UK CAA has gone one step further and allowed portable TSO approved devices to also transmit an ADS-B position signal. This means that pilots and aircraft owners with an investment of around €500 can both see and be seen electronically – plus benefit from weather data where a ground based transmitter is available.”

LLCs versus Trusts and Protecting Your Asset

This month’s topic stems from the calls we often receive regarding forming a Limited Liability Corporation (LLC) and/or Trust in the United States. Clients who are foreign nationals registered with Aircraft Guaranty Corporation sometimes wonder about taking their aircraft out of Trust and putting it in an LLC instead: Can they do it? Is it better? The answers require a bit of explanation because it seems like a good strategy for protecting the asset – it can be in fact – but there are restrictions and a specific course of action to adhere to. Registering an aircraft with an LLC is a strategy often put to use by US citizens. The purpose in both forming an LLC and registering an aircraft with it are the same: to limit the liability of an individual in any kind of recourse, protecting the asset. For instance, if an accident occurred and the aircraft damaged property, an individual owner would not be personally liable – the LLC would. FAA regulations restrict this practice though and only allow aircraft registration by an LLC if two thirds of the stakeholders are US citizens.

There is, however, another approach for our clients that has the same results. An LLC can be the beneficiary of a Trust instead of an individual. In this way, liability again extends beyond the individual, or owner trustee, to the beneficial owner of the aircraft, the LLC. This effectively accomplishes the same aims US citizens have when they register an aircraft at the FAA with an LLC – to protect the asset by protecting an individual from potentially unfair recourse. To sum it up, if we have a foreign national client who would like to protect their asset through an LLC, but the LLC does not meet the two thirds US citizens requirement for FAA registration, we can instead place the LLC as the beneficiary of the trust. KAVEL 10 SMART SURVEYING “Next Generation Surveying”

Why fly with a drone when you can do the same measurement more accurately, faster and cheaper with an aeroplane?

We now have a lot of work for local governments, quasi-governmental organisations, and contractors to make digital terrain models.

Kavel 10, a company which specialises in surveying, has developed a new technique to map areas with the help of lidar and photogrammetry.

Kavel 10 has also received other assignments from this work, such as a survey of the flood defences along a river. The contract was put out to tender and the contractor wanted to identify from the pictures exactly where reinforcements were needed. “The idea was to do that with a drone, but it was a stretch of more than 100 kilometers and with areas that are sometimes difficult to reach. So it would take weeks to do that. We could do that by plane in one day.”

The aircraft, a Tecnam P2006T in Special Mission Platform configuration, delivered just few weeks ago from Italy already summed several flight hours. PH-KIO, flies over the Netherlands on a weekly basis. The plane is owned by Kavel 10 and takes photos and lidar images of, for example building sites, river banks, cities, dykes, and sand depots. It used the latest techniques that allow the company to map The Netherlands from the air. The use of lidar has significant benefits, says co-owner Richard Brouwer. “This technology measures millions of unique laser pulses on the ground surface. The link with GPS and an IMU intertial unit, and orientation parameters, ensures an accuracy of 15 millimetres. According to the company, another advantage of flying is the speed that surveys can be carried out and also that there are fewer restrictions. “In the Netherlands you still have large no-fly zones where you cannot fly with a drone, for example along high-voltage cables, along roads and above natural and military areas,” said Brouwer. “That doesn’t apply to a manned aeroplane.” Flying allows you to cover a larger area, and it is faster. “With a drone you always have to use two people and you can only finish one small area at a time,” said Brouwer. “The plane scans a strip of 250 meters in one flight line,” he added.

Using Airborne LIDAR

Flying small projects with lidar is unique in the Netherlands, says the company. “We are the first to do that from a manned aeroplane, and have multiple projects every week. Substantial investments had to be made for the equipment. At first we only flew with cameras, but we wanted to do better. That fits with our business philosophy that we are always looking for the best method to map the environment.

Another possibility that lidar offers is measuring a site and then converting the data into a digital model for the contractor. This offers great possibilities, said Brouwer, because the terrain has been determined very precisely in advance, it is possible calculate the contractor sharply on the amount of land that must be invoked.

Using Oblique Cameras

Another new technique that Kavel 10 is using is their oblique camera with multiple lenses. This allows the company to take images in four directions at once at 45-degree angles. This technique is very interesting and is used for making 3D city models, because it allows you to capture data on sites that are not covered with the nadir camera. When combining this with the LIDAR system, Kavel 10 can gather valuable data for municipals and other governmental organisations.

The aircraft: Tecnam P2006T Special Mission Platform

The ideal platform for so many different types of missions was recognized in the Italian twin engine. The Tecnam P2006T SMP’s high-wing and retractable landing gear allows for a ‘no view obstruction’ for external cameras and operator FoV (Field of View). The high wing keeps two economical engines completely cleared from dust and any foreign object that could damage the propellers and the engine through the air intakes. The option to use automotive fuel (MOGAS) as well as AVGAS allows Tecnam P2006T to dramatically reduce direct costs, making it possible to fly in areas where AvGas is difficult to find or prohibitively expensive. The key success of this solution is mainly related to the high quality/price ratio and the many possibilities according to the needs of the final user/operator, as the many sales Tecnam is doing worldwide.

European Border Guard Surveillance The pressure on governments to monitor their borders is a hot topic. The European Border Guard is charged with monitoring and protecting its (and the EU’s) borders from people trafficking, smuggling, illegal immigration, arms smuggling, goods smuggling, combating terrorism as well as monitoring all sea, land and air security. It’s a big operation and the two ECARYS ES15s are an important tool in carrying out this vital task in an efficient manner. People don’t look up unless they are alerted. It’s obvious that the quieter the aircraft the less opportunity to alert those on the ground to the fact that they are being watched and monitored. Operating at 7,000 feet makes the ES15 impossible to hear and if it is spotted then the profile is that of a glider. The ES15 doesn’t attract attention which makes it ideal for this line of work. There were a number of other aircraft in the evaluation including twin-engine fixed wing and helicopters. Ease of operation was another major factor in choosing the ES15. Pilot training is less onerous versus jet and twin-engined aircraft and with an hourly operating cost being less than a third of a twin engine aircraft, it means that for the same budget the aircraft can provide an eye in the sky for longer periods. The European Border Guard required the ability to provide imagery in real time to teams on the ground who can then direct forces to certain areas. The ES15 has a design that enables clean feeds of data which are not hampered by excessive heat from exhausts or engines. With multiple hard-points for antennas and space for power and back-up power, the payload requirements from the European Border Guard matched the ES15 perfectly.

The top-selling turboprops tend to be aircraft that are continually popular among owners needing fuel-efficient, multi-mission types, as AvBuyer explores below… and climb performance and cruise speed. Another advantage offered by many turboprops is the single-pilot operational simplicity, engineered into even the multi-engine turboprops. The only exceptions to the sum total of these benefits exist among the unpressurised models that are available and form a small, important and dynamic segment of the turboprop market. Today’s turboprops offer a broad range of turbine performance, propeller cost-effectiveness (some with at - or near to - Light Jet cruise performance capabilities) with cabin and cockpit accoutrements that rival the best of the fanjet strata. And on trips of up to 300 nautical miles, the difference in travel time between a jet and a turboprop is negligible.

While exceptions exist, turboprop airplanes offer a common set of attributes that make them an attractive proposition. The powerplants are responsible for most of this – turboprop engines benefit today from propeller designs that are far more sophisticated than just a decade ago, resulting in lower maintenance costs; longer overhaul cycles; improved climb and cruise performance; and - in turn - reduced noise levels in the cabin. In addition, specific fuel consumption numbers continue to improve – an attractive attribute given today’s depressed oil prices, with the practical effect of allowing the use of higher power-levels without suffering a proportionate increase in fuel consumption/costs. Piaggio Up For Sale Italy's Piaggio Aerospace has invited expressions of interest as its shareholders seek to sell the company, majority owned by UAE company, Mubadala. Expressions of interest were due to be received by Vincenzo Nicastro, the government-appointed extraordinary commissioner who is overseeing the administration process, by 15th May.

Nicastro said the agreement “represents a first concrete step for the relaunch of the company and will allow it to present itself as an attractive opportunity for potential buyers.” The plan also “foresees new contracts for the engine maintenance with a ten-year plan; a contract for the retrofitting of nineteen P.180-Avanti operated by various Italian Institutions; and the pur-chase of ten new P.180-Avantis.”

Piaggio went into insolvency last year after Mubadala cancelled its order for the P.1HH Hammerhead, an unmanned maritime reconnaissance version of the Avanti.

There are some 37 government-owned Avantis, some of which need replacement, and efforts are being made to promote new aircraft sales for the Italian Air Force, coast guard, and police. www.piaggio-aircraft.com

Flaris Jet Makes First Flight

On April 5 the Polish Flaris LAR1 jet, produced by the Metal-Master, took to flew for the first time from Zielona Gora Babimost Airport. Test pilot Wieslaw Cena flew the aircraft. “This is a milestone for the project,” said Rafal Ladzinski, head of the Flaris programme. “This small jet, powered by a Williams FJ33-5A engine produced in the United States, is a worldwide innovative structure. It belongs to a new category of high speed personal jets.” The Flaris project is co-financed by the European Union, and is designed for holders of a PPL. Metal-Master says the six-seat jet can take-off and land on short grass airports and has a ground roll of 250m; has a cruise speed of 390kt and a max speed of 416kt; and a range of range of 1200nm. It has a carbon-fibre fuselage, detachable wings and a Garmin 600 flight deck. www.flaris.pl

The TBM 940 made its airshow debut at Aero Friedrichshafen in April. The aircraft has been updated over the 930 with an autothrottle and automatic icing detection system. “Building on the TBM 940’s first public appearance at Aero Friedrichshafen only one month after its official announcement, we are now awaiting certification by EASA and the U.S. FAA to start initial deliveries,” said Daher airplane business unit senior v-p Nicolas Chabbert, who added: “The aircraft’s new features represent a further evolution of our TBM e-copilot concept, providing assistance in single-pilot operations.” Chabbert said the company had already taken orders for 25 TBM 940s and one sale was made at the Aero show, by Rheinland Air Service, which is the TBM-authorized distributor for Austria and Germany. Waco, Texas-based Blackhawk Modifications is marking 20 years in business with a significant expansion at its Headquarters plus a subsidiary rebranding exercise. NHC says it will continue to serve the North and Baltic Sea region, the Frisian and Hallig Islands. Italy’s NFC Receives Two AW139s The Italian National Fire Corps (NFC) has taken delivery from Leonardo of its first two AW139 helicopters, which will be based at Rome Ciampino for NFC personnel training. The AW139s will progressively replace the Italian National Fire Corps AB412s, to guarantee better coverage and more rapid responsiveness across the country. The NFC will receive a third AW139 this year under a €45 million contract, signed in 2018, which includes integrated logistic support and training for pilots and technicians. The agreement includes an option for 12 additional helicopters. The AW139 is also in service with the Italy’s Guardia di Finanza, State Police, Coast Guard and Air Force. They feature a wide range of mission equipment. The order takes the total number of AW139s ordered by the Italian Government to 56, covering a wide scope of public utility roles. Schiebel Camcopter Selected by Norway Norway’s Andøya Test Center has selected Schiebel’s Camcopter S-100 for extensive search and rescue trials as part of the Arctic 2030 project. The S-100 can operate for up to six hours continuously and in the Arctic it does not require any additional start or recovery equipment, and its minimal footprint is perfect for offshore patrol vessels with small deck sizes. The S-100 can fly at temperatures as low as -40°C, as it did in Canadian icebreaker operations, helping to identify the boundaries between flat and rough ice.

In the Andøy Municipality project, S-100 will be equipped with an Electro-Optical/ Infra-Red (EO/IR) camera gimbal; an Overwatch Imaging PT-8 Oceanwatch payload; an Automatic Identification System (AIS) receiver; and a Radionor Maritime Broadband Radio. Tests are scheduled to commence in the fall of 2019 with the UAS being deployed from Norwegian Coast Guard vessels in Andfjorden, Northern Norway. Fifteen aviation associations have launched a new campaign to highlight the need to “safely integrate drones into the aviation network.” IAOPA has been providing input from a GA perspective. “We are all ONE in the Sky” kicked off with a joint statement by the associations, which is summarised here: ONE Sky highlighted 8 key focus areas: 1. Extensive Public Awareness Campaign. All drone users must be aware of the safety risks, duties, liabilities, insurance requirements, responsibilities and third-party privacy issues associated with drone operations. More resources must be dedicated to this aspect of drone integration in the airspace 2. Mandatory Training and Certificate/License Relevant to Operations. Practical training and theoretical knowledge requirements for unmanned aircraft pilots constitute an important safety net to prevent drone incidents or accidents. A solid knowledge and skills base is therefore a must, considering the complexity of the national and European airspaces and related aviation regulations 3. Airport Protection From Drone Intrusions. All industry stakeholders should be prepared to protect the security of aircraft operations. It is essential to clearly define the roles and responsibilities of each stakeholder (e.g. airports, air navigation service providers and authorities) with regards to the detection, identification and neutralisation of drones. Regulation must be in place for countermeasures and a safety case must be produced to determine the level of ‘power’ given to security forces. Enforceable and strict legal and/or administrative sanctions must be ensured in each State when users of drones endanger aviation by violating the existing rules. 4. Incident Reporting It is vital to capture as much safety/security related information as possible. Reporting any incidents/accidents surrounding droneoperations is an invaluable tool in this context. Everyone should be able to report such occurrences based on a

non-punitive system, harmonised across Europe. 5. Increase in the Effectiveness of Enforcement. It is essential that States have the appropriate resources, power and means to enforce regulation. Enforcement bodies must receive training and technical equipment to monitor regulatory compliance. Registration of drones/drone operators as well as the requirement for a drone pilot certificate/license will greatly facilitate such enforcement. 6. Situational Awareness of All Manned Aircraft. A path is required for integrating manned and unmanned aircraft in uncontrolled airspace. There are presently no adequate technologies (or spectrum) for users to make themselves visible (i.e. transmit electronically their identity or location). In addition, situational awareness needs to accommodate complex drone operations such as BVLOS and autonomous flights. 7. Traffic management for drones UTM/U-Space The European Commission’s ‘U-Space’ initiative provides a policy framework for the safe integration of drones. USpace systems are being designed to ensure a proper interface between the drone world and manned aviation, ANSPs and other relevant authorities. Many ANSPs are already involved in UTM-related projects, often in partnership with drone technology companies.

8. Further Research Into Essential Areas. ONE Sky welcomes and actively supports the European Commission’s initiative to create the U-Space Demonstrator Network. Concerted research action is needed to allow all stakeholders to maximise and best exploit their research efforts. Additional research is still required on essential areas such as contingency procedures, geofencing, surveillance, ATM-drone pilot communication and impact of collisions between drones and all types of manned aircraft. The associations welcomed the EASA Research Agenda 2018-2020, which includes a research project on vulnerability of manned aircraft to drone strike, including engine impact tests. T

While updating visitors to the show on its GA Roadmap 2.0, EASA said the award would recognise the smartphone/tablet app for use by GA pilots that had the greatest safety benefit. “The GA Safety Award aims to promote development of reliable tools to improve safety, encourage investment in this area, support and enhance visibility of valuable products, and further enhance the GA community’s engagement to safety,” the Agency stated. Requirements for the app link it to the European Plan for Aviation Safety (EPAS), in that the app should address one of the four key EPAS focus points: Staying in control; Managing the flight; Preventing mid-air collisions; and coping in adverse weather. Prizes are: 1st Prize: €8,000; 2nd Prize: €5,000; 3rd Prize: €2,000. Meanwhile Rachel Daeschler, EASA certification director, gave an update on EASA’s GA Roadmap 2.0, key points of which are new rules for flight crew licensing for balloons and sailplanes; the Basic Instrument Rating, which is due be introduced by the end of 2019; and simpler, better and cheaper rules for aircraft maintenance under an improved Part-M Light. EASA is also working on a new design and production process for light aircraft, with Part-21 Light. “This drastically simplified airworthiness system will be developed in cooperation with our stakeholders,” said Daeschler. www.easa.europa.eu

Aerotek Promotes Value of Oil Testing Aerotek is a startup company based in the UK but it covers all of the European Union. The company takes oil samples from piston-engined aircraft to determine the state and safety of an aircraft’s engine, thus allowing the operator to get a snapshot of the condition of the engine. This is rather like taking a blood sample from a person to identify underlying diseases. Just changing the blood doesn’t cure the problem, and it’s the same with engines; just changing the oil won’t cure any developing issues. This is not new technology. It is used regularly across various sectors, such as plant machinery, trains, ships and wind turbines. Aircraft manufacturers such as Lycoming recommend that oil samples are taken regularly and have issued the following service letter (No. L171), entitled ‘General Aspects of Spectrometric Oil Analysis,’ which provides a guide for the use to oil analysis in measuring engine health. The information is in general terms since the health of each engine must be determined on its own merits. Aerotek uses a world-class laboratory, with offices in more than 100 countries, to test samples. It provides analytical ferrography and chip evaluation for ascertaining various metal constituents that wear out your engine.

After performing a series of tests, the technician analyses each oil sample to evaluate the extent of metal wear and the accumulation of abrasive dust.

The analysis report considers aluminium, chrome, copper, iron, magnesium, nickel and silver, in order to determine the precise type of wear in an engine and its sources. The report also offers informed recommendations on the state your aircraft engine generating a detailed report and a visual ‘traffic light’ report which shows green for “all wear as expected”; yellow for “more wear than expected” in a named component; and red for “do not use the aircraft until immediate maintenance has taken place.” Fortunately, red is rare as with regular testing, you build up a trend analysis which can be viewed online at any time. Your aircraft is a valuable investment and safety is paramount. Whether you are an owner, a member of a syndicate, or a flying school, if you are undertaking an hours-based engine overhaul you need to know that the engine can do what it is designed to do, and is performing as the aircraft manufacturers intended. Timely oil analysis also can save on unnecessary maintenance and save you money, as well as to giving you the confidence to keep you and your passengers flying safely.

How does the process work? First, you purchase your kit from the website, either single packs or packs of three to fit in seamlessly with your existing maintenance programme. Aerotek will then send out the kits, which will include a sample bottle in a return pod, syringe and tubing, full instructions on how to take your small 25-50ml sample, along with gloves and tissues to insure no drips or contamination of the engine cover or hangar floor. Once this is completed, complete the paperwork, enclose the sample in the pod, and return to the laboratory using the pre-paid postage label. Once Aerotek receives this, your aircraft will be set up on the system and the analysis will begin. The technicians measure engine oils, lubricating oils and other fluids for the detection of lubricant engine wear, lubricant quality degradation, and other problems. Your sample is bombarded with tests such as: • spectrometry • viscosity • dilution • water detection • acid number • base number • particle counting • microscopic analysis

Once you have your first report, you are now on the road to creating a TREND ANALYSIS for your engine. By monitoring your aircraft’s engine condition, it allows you to evaluate the engine’s data trends. Most engine bearings mainly comprise of iron, thus making it the most common metal to display fundamental changes. It’s important to carefully track the iron content by monitoring its trends to detect gradual damage and wear in the engine’s gears and bearings. So now you can see this is not about just changing the oil! Oil analysis acts as a warning system. It minimises engine down-time and maintenance costs. Diagnosis Summary Wear metal readings are generally as expected as is the viscosity although the type of oil being used has not been quoted. The additive levels are unusually low (double-checked) and are different to those seen from the other engine sampled at the same time which suggests that an unusual (and different) type of oil is being used - please confirm. The lead level is normal based on the use of Avgas so no action is called for. If the Oil was not changed at the time the sample was taken, we believe that it remains fit for further service. Sample again in a further 50 operating hours or 8 weeks whichever comes first.
