FireFlies: Look Who’s Lighting up The Sky!

"Smoke on... pyros on...break break... GO!" That's the call from the FireFlies lead pilot Jon Gowdy as he and his team-mate Andy Durston literally light up the sky with their stunning twilight synchro display... With their debut just over two years ago the FireFlies are taking the UK display circuit by storm with their dazzling and innovative displays. But it’s not just the UK that's getting the bug to see more of them... they've got booking requests coming in from across Europe and even further afield. But who are the wizards behind the smoke and mirrored loops?

Introducing the Team… Lead pilot Jon Gowdy drives the display from his frontman aircraft G-SPRK, a Vans RV4. Jon's background includes a professional career with Air Atlantique flying the DC3, a stint down at the South Pole flying Twin Otters for the British Antarctic Survey, and presently as a pilot for British Airways on its 747 fleet. Gowdy has flown on every continent, which is something few pilots can say. His Display career includes such highlights as flying the Dragon Rapide, the Vampire and the Spitfire – not to mention a successful season (or three) in the much-loved Twister Duo Display Team. Formation pilot Andy Durston follows Jon's every move at speeds of up to 210mph just feet away in his RV4, G-SPRX. Andy's professional career started in the Royal Navy flying the Tucano, Hawk and the infamous Harrier. His current working seat is, like team-mate Jon, at British Airways on the 747 fleet.

Andy has displayed in Yaks and Pitts and has remarked that the highlight of his flying career is having been lucky enough to fly ML407, the Grace Spitfire. Following two very successful seasons the FireFlies are looking to shine even brighter this year as they prepare to enter the 2018 season with a full calendar of bookings and the exciting news of their new sponsor (shared with GA Buyer Europe first!), Catto Propellers.

A Sparkling Line-Up

Catto is an industry leader in the complex world of propeller blade dynamics and development, and team-mates Andy and Jon are very enthusiastic about the new relationship. It's going to be a great year for us," promises Andy.

The Daytime display is an exhilarating mixture of close formation and opposition flying, utilizing dynamic manoeuvres and smoke trails to highlight what man and machine can really do.

"I just got back from visiting Catto in California, what an impressive operation they run. First class! I'm proud to wear their badge," Jon adds. "We’re delighted to be supporting the FireFlies," says Nicole Catto, Director of Sales. But enough of the talk... what are the FireFlies serving up for the spectators this year? The FireFlies offer a fine choice of displays including a daytime aerobatic display and a twilight pyrotechnic display.

The twilight display is something altogether different. Something only a handful of pilots in the world are able to put on for the open-mouthed spectator below. Using specially designed pyrotechnic rigs fitted to the wingtips, controlled and sequenced from the cockpit (along with the smoke), Jon and Andy put on the best firework display you'll ever see as they rocket through the dark sky creating a dazzling spectacle of light and colour. Think shooting stars... but in formation! The team also makes availability in their display calendar for a few private functions too. Under the supervision of the Swiss Federal Office for Civil Aviation (BAZL), engineers and aircraft craftsman were able to gradually bring a piece of aviation history back to life. Compromises with modern technology were made in as few areas as possible. The search for a reliable powerplant resulted in the installation of a 450hp Pratt & Whitney R-985 ‘Wasp Junior’ radial engine, which is still in use worldwide. First flight brought its challenges since no pilots with prior F 13 experience who could have offered insights into the F 13's flying qualities remained. Nevertheless, everything went smoothly, and the team was surprised at the benign handling characteristics. Future plans include small-scale production in response to individual market demand, using the experience gained in the construction of the first airplane.

DAI Austria Becomes Diamond Global HQ

Having acquired Diamond Aircraft Industries GmbH (DAI Austria), Diamond Aircraft Inc. (Canada) and Austro Engine in 2017, Wanfeng Aviation Industry Co., Ltd. says DAI Austria, located at the Wiener Neustadt East airfield since 1987, will become the company’s global headquarters for the whole Diamond Group. Mr. Bin Chen, Chairman of Wanfeng Aviation Industry and President of the Wanfeng Auto Holding Group elaborated, “I set a clear goal that Diamond Aircraft is going to be the leading company in aviation. CAA Bridges Delay in EASA Amendment to Aircrew Regulations

The UK’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) planned to introduce a series of exemptions to allow UK General Aviation pilots and training organisations to continue to operate during a delay to the publication of the EASA amendment to the aircrew regulation.

Ninety-nine years after the maiden flight of the Junkers F 13, its historic replica has been certificated. Program founder and investor Dieter Morszeck was excited that after the completion of extensive flight testing the airplane was certified. The all-metal construction of the original F 13 was revolutionary, and the construction of the replica required the company to re-learn long-forgotten construction techniques using corrugated aluminium.

Junkers Aircraft Factory is Back in Business

The EASA amendment, originally due to be published in March, would enable certain regulated GA activities to continue after 8 April 2018 and introduce new ones. To reduce the impact on the GA community the CAA was working with the UK Department for Transport to publish several exemptions before 8 April 2018. These replicate the expected EASA amendment and will: • Enable Registered Training Facilities to continue after April 8, 2018 • Permit the continued use of UK national pilot licensing arrangements to operate EASA balloons, sailplanes and powered sailplanes after April 8, 2018 • Assist NPPL(A) SLMG pilot licence holders. There was, however, no means for the CAA to implement the new Declared Training Organisations (DTOs) that are also part of the EASA change until the relevant European regulation comes into force. This meant that DTOs would not be available from April 8, 2018 as expected. The CAA understands that EASA hopes to implement the aircrew regulation later this summer with no further changes to the regulation. Meantime, the CAA will publish the UK exemptions on its website as an official record.

Could Alice be set to Revolutionize Regional Travel?

According to Eviation Aircraft’s Omer Bar-Yohay (pictured right), aviation is one of the world’s dirtiest industries. Thus, Eviation has been developing Alice, an electric aircraft which it says will soon be capable of flying up to nine passengers 650 miles on a single charge, at minimal cost… Unlike medium - and heavy-duty transportation markets which have been radically transformed by technology innovation over the last several decades, aviation remains one of the most carbon-intensive industries. Indeed, aviation is projected to consume one-fourth of the world’s carbon budget by 2050 and it is currently lagging behind its counterparts on the ground in the race to electrify.

Avidyne is well-known for its industry-leading integrated avionics systems, displays and safety systems for general aviation aircraft, but HELI-EXPO marked the first time the company unveiled a product specifically for helicopters. Of particular use to helicopter pilots are the additional modifications of the MapMx interface to support more than 31 waypoints, and, in answer to Avidyne's customer research and response, a way to allow fuel range ring time to be configurable. Further addressing helicopter operators' specific needs, pilots flying with the IFD540 or IFD440 and the new R10.2.1 software will have easy access to heliports, helicopter SID/STAR/ Approaches, VFR waypoints, AWIS frequencies on the frequency list, and helicopter 'ownship' on Map and Synthetic Vision displays.

R10.2.1 software is currently shipping with all new IFD units and is available for download through Avidyne dealers as a field upgrade. R10.2.1 is available from Avidyne at no charge. Helicopter Enablement is a $499 option. (Pricing does not include any labour charges.) How Cirrus is Fulfilling One Man’s Vision to Fly

Taking Flight on the Fast Track

He took delivery of his second Cirrus aircraft at the company’s Vision Center in Knoxville, Tennessee, where Andrew explains they take “very good care of you”.

Andrew Gilbert is not afraid of a challenge. At the age of 23, he launched Node4, a startup that is now a leader in cloud computing. And that same entrepreneurial attitude drove him to tackle his lifelong dream of learning to fly.

“Freedom” is the word Andrew uses to describe how flying has changed his life. He travels more and makes it home in time for dinner. He also takes his family on more adventures, and connects with his young sons through flying.

“Learning to fly was a long-standing ambition of mine,” Andrew reflects. “So, as soon as my schedule opened up to include a bit of free time, I knew I had to make the commitment.”

“I think my boys like the idea that their own dad is a pilot,” Andrew comments. “They are still quite young but they love the experience and get excited when we take the plane out. And my 7-year-old has started to sit up front and ask questions.”

Though a free schedule is a great excuse to start working towards a private pilot’s license, Andrew needed just a bit more motivation – and that was provided as he took delivery of, and was able to train in his first Cirrus SR22 at The Flight Academy, a Cirrus Certified Training Center located in Seattle, Washington. There’s nothing like wanting to solo your brand-new plane to spur your training along. Not unlike his cloud computing business, Andy chose a very fast path to getting his pilot’s license. He traveled from the UK to Seattle and committed to an intense training schedule of six days a week, for six weeks straight. “Training in Seattle was a fantastic experience,” Andrew recalls. “It was hard to be away from my family, but being outside of my normal environment forced me to focus. And training in my own aircraft at a certified training center provided the confidence I needed to stick to a slightly daunting accelerated approach.”

‘Vision’ for the Future Idling along is certainly not Andrew’s modus operandi. He plans to pilot his own Vision Jet, an ambitious plan that would definitely make the folks at Cirrus proud. As the world’s first single-engine Personal Jet, the Vision Jet was designed to do exactly that – be flown by the owner and pilot. Andrew’s training ground was Boeing Field – an international airport in Seattle and home to airliners and plenty of air traffic. In his words, it was “a proper flying experience”. Stressful at times, but also realistic and challenging, it more than prepared him for his first solo flight: 200 nautical miles of crisp blue February skies to a rural airport on the west coast. It was surreal. It was exhilarating. It was addictive, and Andrew hasn’t turned back since. “Coming from the IT world, I immediately connected with the avionics,” Andrew says. “The integration allows me to plan everything from the route to the weight and balance, and seamlessly connect via Bluetooth. My work load as a pilot is greatly eased, which means I can basically step into my SR and fly.”

Freedom of Flight Andrew completed his training in 2016 and he hasn’t stopped since. He upgraded to an SR Series G6 in 2017 and is quickly approaching delivery of his much-anticipated Vision Jet this summer. 22 PISTON BUYER EUROPE MAY 2018

Andrew’s central location in the UK has allowed him to fly across the snowy mountains of the Swiss Alps and the azure waters of Southern France. So, it’s only fitting that his bucket-list Vison Jet trip is to the (slightly less tranquil) desert of Las Vegas, Nevada. Here’s to hoping that gamble has as much of a pay-off as those intense weeks of training for the first time in his Cirrus.

Crossing the Atlantic in a Cirrus SR22 Tips on Preparing for an Atlantic Crossing, by Roger Harr

Crossing the Water The water in the North Atlantic is between 2°C and 4°C. Without a survival suit, you would have perhaps 1-2 minutes to board a life raft. If unsuccessful, you don’t have any chance for survival. Thus, I took special survivor training in Germany in an indoor pool where they simulated waves, wind and darkness. Roger Harr

In 2016, Roger Harr made his second NorthAtlantic flight crossing in his Cirrus SR22. Roger spoke to Aircraft Guaranty Corp about his experience.

We practiced everything, such as how to ditch from an upside-down airplane, how to exit the plane underwater, making it to the surface, and boarding the life raft. I learned quite a lot about the different types of survival suits and life rafts. This is critical knowledge for pilots planning such a trip.

When you plan a flight such as an Atlantic crossing, it’s very, very important to know all that you can in advance. You must prepare for everything as highlighted by Roger here…

Long-Distance Aircraft Communications Make sure you understand communication capabilities along your flight path. For my trip, I learned the following:

Flight Plans and the Weather Before my first Atlantic crossing three years ago, I studied the weather for two months prior to the trip. Every morning, I studied the weather charts of the North Atlantic, writing down if the weather would allow me to fly the leg from A to B on that day or not.

• There is a corridor north of Scotland (Iceland Kulusuk - Sondrestromfjord – Iqaluit) where you usually have radio contact if you are flying at FL140 or above. • Iceland and Greenland accept satellite phones. • When flying from Narsarsuaq to Goose Bay below FL250, you need to have a HF radio.

In the evening, I’d check the weather again to see if the decision I had made that morning was correct. This proved to be an effective and accurate training exercise that helped me understand the weather situation in the North Atlantic. (It’s certainly not the same as it is back home!) Your Aircraft and the Weather Crossing Greenland is the most difficult part of a North-Atlantic flight crossing. Most people know about Greenland’s ice coverage, but it’s not common knowledge that the ice is two-miles thick. The ice at several places is so heavy that it presses the ground underneath it to sea level. When crossing Greenland, you must be absolutely sure that you can fly either higher than the clouds or below them. When the clouds are lying on the surface of this ice shield, it results in negative degrees Celsius. I know that it’s impossible to do this for hours with a Cirrus. So, be sure to understand the North Atlantic weather, and also the capabilities of your airplane. 30 PISTON BUYER EUROPE MAY 2018

I had three different satellite datalinks which provided weather information and let me contact my family with text messages while en route. I was also equipped with a portable satellite beacon that could contact rescue teams via text messages in case of an emergency. Often there is no radar coverage over the ocean for the low flight levels, but oceanic controllers must still make sure all the aircraft are safely separated by distance and altitude. Since they can’t “see” the aircraft, controllers rely on pilots to report their position at regular intervals. A position report provides an aircraft’s location, speed and altitude so the controller can build a 3D picture of all the traffic. Pilots are required to report their position by radio every 10° longitude. Fuel Planning Alternates are rare in Greenland, so I prepared and planned with this understanding. Pre-flight planning must include calculating a Point of No Return (PNR). The PNR is also known as the Point of Safe Return (PSR), the furthest point along a track that you can fly towards the destination and have sufficient fuel to divert to an alternate, with safe reserves on arrival.

In other words, it is your last chance to assess the prospect of a successful approach and landing at your destination, and to decide whether to go on or to divert. If any doubt exists, divert to the alternate. In North Canada there are problems with the availability of AVGAS. During my first Atlantic crossing in 2014, I paid $1,300 for a 54Gal AVGAS drum. A bit further to the south, they were even asking $2,000! It’s worth phoning around to find the best solution for your trip. For flights like this, I have a manual fuel pump and filters in my equipment box. Aircraft Icing Procedures It’s important to fully understand the icing systems for your aircraft. The G2 TKS inadvertent ice system on the Cirrus SR22 is not approved for flights into known icing. It’s certified as a “No Hazard” system for normal operations only. Therefore, no determination has been made as to the capability of the system to remove or prevent ice accumulation.

Why should I register in the US? • It helps non-US Citizens register with the FAA. • It makes it easy for foreign nationals to make frequent trips to their US homes. • The FAA’s maintenance and registration requirements are favorable for GA aircraft. • It helps publicly traded corporations meet FAA requirements. • It enables foreign businesses to lease planes in the US. • Short-term trusts allow non-US citizens to temporarily register while preparing for deregistration. • Repossessed or stored aircraft can be registered, maintained and remarketed to US buyers. • Foreign manufacturers can register in the US to demo and sell aircraft to US buyers.

The Cirrus SR22 G2 wing anti-icing system does not cover the entire wing. The TKS titanium panel does not deliver coverage on a portion of the beginning wing root and the outer wing tip. Coverage was later increased on the Cirrus SR22 G3 wing.

If icing is inadvertently encountered, the pilot must decide on the most appropriate TKS operating mode. The system allows a pilot to start delivering anti-icing fluid to the wing leading edges, stabilizer and prop blades. Normal mode should be selected when conditions for icing are encountered and before ice accretion. The Cirrus SR22 G2 wing TKS system operating time while in “normal” mode is up to 60 minutes. If ice has accreted to flight surfaces, the pilot should select TKS maximum mode. The Cirrus SR22 G2 wing TKS system operating time while in “maximum” mode is up to 30 minutes. Equal time point (ETP) is the point along the planned track where the flight time would be the same forward to the destination as it would be to track back to the departure. Obviously, the wind plays a big part in determining the location of the ETP as it determines our ground speed. In nil wind, the ETP will be the halfway point distance-wise. When wind is introduced, the ETP will move towards the destination. Cirrus pilots are cautioned not to operate the TKS system for extended time in clear air, at high altitudes and very cold temperatures. Doing so can result in “flash” evaporation of water and alcohol from the de-icing fluid. Flash evaporation will result in a glycol rich fluid that can become gel like on wing and windshield surfaces. De-icing fluid capacity on the G2 TKS system is 2.9 gallons. I knew I had to to stay out of clouds when the temperatures were below freezing level. Contingency and Emergency Planning As pilots, it’s ideal to always know where we are along our planned flight track relative to our departure and destination points. If we don’t know where we are, how do we know what the best plan of action would be should there be a problem during flight?

Other Flight Items Following are some additional supplies you should not overlook when stocking your airplane for a similar trip: • I had two external GPS, two iPads, and paper charts for the whole route.

• Emergency food and water for four days were taken.

• Polar survival equipment for the eternal ice of Greenland.

• My camera was a Sony Cyber Shot DSC-RX100 IV (one of the best-available compact cameras). Important: You have to be able to take pictures with one hand and you will get the best quality doing so with a collapsible rubber lens hood you can press on the window to avoid reflections.

What Makes the Pilatus PC-12 a Stand-Out Aircraft?

Oriens Aviation’s CEO Edwin Brenninkmeyer has enjoyed many years in aviation. During that time, one particular aircraft has captured his interest. GA Buyer Europe spoke with Mr Brenninkmeyer to discover what it is about the Pilatus PC-12 that really stands out? GAB: Edwin, where did your involvement with Pilatus PC-12s begin? You’ve been flying a long time, but what was it about the PC-12 that really stood out and captured your interest? Brenninkmeyer: A good friend of mine has been a PC-12 aficionado for many years and even though I have been flying for a long time, I was still astonished by the sheer size of the aircraft the first time I saw it up close at Biggin Hill in 2010. Since then, I’ve flown with my owner/pilot friend in his PC-12 on short, VFR trips within the UK as well as longer trips around Europe. I was so impressed to see such a large aircraft operating routinely in strips such as Courchevel and became ever-more aware of their presence at the large international airports too. I always thought the PC-12 was somewhat unobtainable, but when I learnt that the per-mile fuel costs and maintenance costs rival (even beat) the cost of operating my own six-seat piston-single, I never looked back. GAB: One of the key selling points of the PC-12 is the versatile interior. On the one hand it’s spacious and comfortable, on the other it must need to withstand plenty of wear and tear from transporting just about anything (Kayaks, Motorbikes, even stuffed alligators per one Pilatus video). What is the secret of the PC-12 interior that allows it to offer the best of both worlds seamlessly? What did BMW get so right? Brenninkmeyer: It’s the combination of the durable BMW quality with Pilatus’ design philosophy which allows rapid conversion

from one interior to another. It’s the ability to quickly remove any seats that may become scuffed and separate the seating area from the cargo area with a strong net that acts as a barrier, allowing any cargo to be securely tied down not only for safety but also to ensure that nothing can move and damage any interior trim. The completely flat floor facilitates cleaning and the huge cargo door at the back means that cargo can be very easily and conveniently loaded and unloaded in an area that is wholly separate from the plush seats. This makes it so easy to keep the interior looking absolutely fresh and ready for conversion back into the executive configuration. GAB: Tell us how the PC-12’s safety record compares against similar aircraft… Brenninkmeyer: The aircraft is still flown by a large number of owner/pilots around the globe - often with no commercial pilot’s licences. Despite this, the accident record is, hands down, better than any other owner-flown aircraft flying today. Indeed, the accident record is half as good again as that for the fleet of all US business jets between 1964 and 2015, most of which are professionally flown. The PC-12 has been designed to be an easy aircraft to operate. It is large and very stable to hand-fly with sophisticated avionics and systems designed with a relatively low-hours, single-pilot in mind to enable him or her to cope in any emergency. GAB: And how about the maintenance needs of the PC-12? This aircraft is built for durability and ruggedness - what advantages does it hold over similar aircraft on the market in terms of its maintenance costs/needs? Brenninkmeyer: The best example is to consider the American PC-12 operator that flies approximately 2,000 hours per airframe, per year. That’s an average of over five hours of

flying, per day, 365 days per year. This simply cannot be achieved in an aircraft that requires heavy maintenance (and usually aircraft that fly that hard, do require heavy maintenance). The PC-12 takes it all in its stride… For the first five years of typical owner utilisation (approx. 300 hours per year), the total maintenance bills for the large 10-seater are similar to, or lower than for my ageing six-seat, complex, piston-single. The airframe is simple and comes with a seven-year factory warranty. There is only one powerplant (under a five year warranty) and even the complex avionics can be fully covered under extended warranty programmes (once the initial three year warranty has expired) allowing for complete peace of mind. The first major scheduled maintenance item occurs after seven years and the engine hot section inspection after 1,750 hours, both of which cost in the region of only £10-15k each. Brenninkmeyer: Oriens Aviation is a one-stop shop for all your Pilatus warranty and maintenance requirements and can arrange everything for you. Most maintenance is done in-house, but for specialist work such as propellers, interior refurbishment, paint and engine overhaul, we work with trusted partners. Though we only promote and market ourselves actively within the British Isles, any Pilatus customer may choose to use any Pilatus Service Centre, anywhere in the world.

2018 Business Flying on the Rise

Business aircraft usage in Europe climbed 4.5% Year-over-Year (YoY) in February to 57,037 flights, according to data from WingX Advance. That’s on top of 6.6% YoY growth in January. Business jet departures in Europe rose 3%, with a decline in private flights offset by a 5% gain in charter activity in this segment for February. While Western and Central Europe experienced “robust growth” in flight activity, the UK was flat and Italy recorded only modest gains.

Air Alliance Completes First Caravan 208B Blackhawk XP140 Conversion

Following successful installation of the first Cessna 208B Caravan Blackhawk XP140 Engine+ Upgrade, Air Alliance delivered the aircraft back to its owner. Angela Hickling, owner of the British Parachute School is a long-standing customer with Air Alliance, and was excited to get her aircraft back after only 2.5 weeks downtime. The newly-converted aircraft will be used for parachuting operations. The Blackhawk XP140 Engine+ Upgrade is available for the Cessna Caravan 208 and 208B, and requires the existing Pratt & Whitney PT6A-114/114A (600/675shp) powerplant to be replaced with a 867shp PT6A-140. The result is considerably improved performance data (including shorter Take-Off distance and better Climb Performance).

Overall, Germany saw the strongest growth in Business Aviation flying, though mainly in the piston segment. Spain reported the largest gains in business jet activity, with an increase of +9% in this segment over the last twelve months. WingX noted that 90% of Business Aviation flights originating in Europe stayed within the region during February.

The conversion is easier compared to other options because the existing cowling, engine mount and exhaust system can be retained, saving both money and time.

Pacific Aerospace has announced the Super-Pac XL, a new variant of its P-750 XSTOL single-engine turboprop offering extra power, range, and an estimated 27% faster rate of climb.

The Super-Pac will be powered by a 900hp Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-140A engine, driving a 100ins four-blade Hartzell propeller. ThrustSense uses a liner actuator to command the throttles so no structural modifications to the existing throttle quadrants are required. The system has its own panel control unit and sets power according to commanded torque or indicated airspeed values. It also includes torque and temperature limit protection. Embraer Delivers First Phenom 300E

SmartSky LiTE 4G Connectivity Introduced at AEA

Embraer has delivered the first new Phenom 300E business jet, having received its type certificate in the first quarter from the US FAA, EASA, and the Brazilian Civil Aviation Agency.

SmartSky says that Turboprop and Light jet operators will have full access to fast internet throughout the aircraft, providing connectivity for both the flight deck and aircraft systems, as well as in the cabin.

The new light jet model was launched in October 2017, designated ‘E’ for ‘Enhanced’ in reference to its entirely redesigned cabin and the addition of the industry-leading nice HD CMS/IFE (Cabin Management System/ In-Flight Entertainment) by Lufthansa Technik. The Phenom 300, the new model’s successful predecessor, has been the best-selling and most delivered light business jet for the last six years.

The March announcement of the SmartSky LiTE system promises to deliver the power of 4G LTE connectivity to the Light jet and Turboprop markets for the first time.

Customers will also be able to access Skytelligence-powered applications from other providers, including those designed to optimize fuel management, maximize flight planning efficiencies, monitor weather or access dynamically optimized re-routing recommendations.

In a statement posted on social media by EFG Flying School, the company and all other flying schools based at Biggin Hill have been given six months’ notice to cease flight training at the airport.

EPS Diesel Progressing Toward Certification

Since last autumn, EPS Diesel has made significant progress in certifying its ‘clean sheet’ Graflight Flat 8 engine, and expects to complete the process later this year…

The company has subjected the Graflight Flat 8 to over 70 hours of climb, cruise and restart scenarios in a revived Air Force chamber which simulated altitudes up to 30,000ft. The tests were conducted to affirm the mechanical design configuration of the engine along with the advanced capabilities through the use of EPS’ proprietary Electronic Engine Control Unit (EECU) and its state of the art fuel system. “The engine responded in normal parameters at all altitudes up to 30,000 feet,” said EPS CEO Michael Fuchs. “There are a considerable number of innovations in the Graflight Flat 8 engine. Some of the new installations have stretched the known rules and methods for certification, especially in software, but progress has been steady and we are satisfied with our current timeline. According to EFG Flying School, although surprised by the notice served, it is already in discussions with various airport operators in relation to relocating and continuing all business activities with the least disruption to all courses, and it assures clients they will still be able to continue to fly at Biggin Hill during the transition period. The Evolution E5 Dual Electronic Flight Instrument (EFI) was introduced by Aspen Avionics at the recent AEA Convention. With redesigned electronics and new glass, the Evolution E5 has a bolder and brighter display and offers higher reliability, more capability and increased processing speed.

The STD’d, non-TSO Evolution E5 consolidates attitude indicator plus DG/CDI into a single display with a rechargeable backup battery. It also includes Global Positioning System Steering (GPSS), air data computer, and attitude heading reference system (ADAHRS). Designed as a drop-in non-TSO replacement for traditional mechanical vacuum instruments,

the Evolution E5 interfaces with most legacy autopilots. “Like all Aspen displays, the Evolution E5 is configurable, upgradeable and affordable. Kopter Enjoys Extensive HeliExpo Interest

The aircraft are expected to be delivered over the period 2018/2019 under the framework of the Distributorship Agreement. This latest contract marks the first customer for the AW109 Trekker in Northern Europe and follows several accomplishments by Sloane Helicopters over the last 12 months.

Customers operating helicopters in different configurations and geographies particularly appreciated the reinforced safety features, performance and design that make the SH09 a very attractive and affordable mission tool.

Leonardo announced the signing of a contract with UK-based Sloane Helicopters for the purchase of one GrandNew and one AW109 Trekker light twin-engine helicopter.

Robinson’s Production Improves in 2017

Robinson Helicopter Company produced 305 helicopters in 2017 with the R44 leading the way with 174 shipments, ranking as the world’s best-selling helicopter according to GAMA’s 2017 Year End Report.

At the request of an industry-leading air ambulance customer, Spectrum designed and manufactured a new interior for the customer’s AW109SP. The amended STC consists of a lower profile platform/housing module with a storage area that secures the stretcher as well as a support mechanism that will allow the crew to easily load and unload the stretcher/Incubator Transport Deck. A Tanis Heater shore power installation includes an open area with a shore power plug to allow the aircraft to charge electric batteries while not in operation. Agrarflug specialises in leasing and sales of twin engine helicopters, and has built up a significant specialism in Bell 412s, 212s and 205s over many years. The company is based at a heliport at Ahlen in central Germany.

A new high of 14 civil aircraft booked in 2017 defied market conditions as Airbus Helicopters UK demonstrated a year-onyear average growth in the civil market of 36% since 2013. As a result, the company has reinforced its position as UK market leader with 46% of the civil and para-public market. Ten Tips for Selling Your Helicopter How to Sell it Faster and Get the Highest Resale Value by Mark V. Clancy

Selling a helicopter can be a daunting endeavour. High-value assets like these require more than just sticking a sign in the window and parking it on the corner. If you’ve ever sold an aircraft, chances are that you found it took a long time to get an offer. Getting a reasonable offer took even longer. Following are some tips to ensure you get the value you want from your helicopter.

1. Take a Buyer’s Perspective

Thinking from the buyer’s perspective is often not a seller’s first inclination, but doing so will enable you to see your aircraft a bit differently. Reviewing the value proposition of your helicopter, making a detailed comparison with other helicopters on the market, and implementing improvements will undoubtedly increase resale opportunities.

2. Consider Improving Component Value

Too often, we see ‘down on component value’ helicopters on the market - helicopters that have a substantial amount of retirement, overhaul, engine and/or major inspections coming due in the near-term. These maintenance expenses can range from 1% of the helicopter retail value to more than 30%, depending on the vintage, make, model and condition. This is a hurdle many buyers don’t want to jump: Commercial buyers who’ve been awarded a contract often don’t have the time to perform the maintenance and mission-equipment reconfiguration necessary to put a helicopter into commission. For private buyers, there are often concerns about spending above and beyond the helicopter purchase price, especially for maintenance items that carry latent risks that could be uncovered during an engine overhaul or a major airframe inspection. Because of this concern, however, private buyers often overlook some very good helicopter acquisition opportunities. Wholesale buyers, such as dealers or lessors, are generally attracted to helicopters requiring substantial work scopes, but most sellers have retail price aspirations that are a challenge when there are so many helicopters for sale. You’ll find that a minimal to moderate investment to ensure sufficient component and inspection time remains for the next year or two will yield measurable value differential and attract more buyer-interest. Consider Exterior and Interior Refurbishments

3. Consider Exterior and Interior Refurbishments

Most used helicopters have been operated for years with the original or old paint that has faded and chipped. Or they have a unique or personal paint livery that doesn’t appeal to a wide audience of buyers. Likewise, interiors become dingy over the years, resulting in worn seats, old plastic, crazed glass, and other cosmetic defects. New exterior paint and an interior refurbishment can make a big difference. A neutral, solid paint colour (such as white), with new interior plastic, fresh seat cushions and covers, replacement glass, and new carpet with floor protectors make a helicopter look new again. While these improvements may cost from $50,000 to $100,000 (depending on if it’s a single- or twin-engine helicopter) and take three to six weeks to perform, it’s an investment that will likely pay off. A neutral paint colour also makes it easy for a buyer to apply custom striping or logos.

4. Invest in an Avionics Update

Depending on the year of manufacture and the likely buyer type, consider an avionics update. The last few years have ushered in substantial avionics improvements and new airworthiness requirements such as ADS-B. Consider removing unused or outdated mission equipment and installing a new nav/comm system, GPS, radio altimeter, ADS-B and an updated audio panel. This type of upgrade can run from $20,000 to $60,000, depending on the helicopter, and take a few weeks, but it will enhance the aircraft’s functionality and longevity, while attracting consideration from more serious buyers. A knowledgeable broker or service center will know what avionics are likely to be valued by buyers and will provide you with specific recommendations to consider. It’s likely that component value improvements, exterior and interior refurbishment, and avionics update will at least match the resale investment, save buyers considerable time, and pay dividends with an increased sales price and reduced resale period. 5. Have Complete, Accurate Documentation and Technical Records

One sure way to find yourself with a “no-buy-pre-buy” inspection is by having incomplete, dishevelled, or inaccurate maintenance records. While most operators have a professional mechanic, engineer, or service centre responsible for maintaining the helicopter records, we have seen too frequently varying degrees of completeness and accuracy with aircraft records. Hiring an independent mechanic or engineer to conduct an audit of all aircraft maintenance records prior to putting the helicopter on the market will help ensure that the pre-purchase inspection goes smoothly and doesn’t create an opportunity for buyers to negotiate the price down.

6. Stage Your Helicopter

Once all the maintenance, refurbishment, and upgrade work is completed it’s time to commission professional photos of the exterior, cockpit and interior. Grimylooking photos taken in dark hangars or with dreary weather backgrounds, or grainy thumbnail images taken with low-quality phones or cameras will make for a poor first impression. Be sure your helicopter is clean. Choose an appropriate location with a scenic background, and take the photos on a blue-sky day. Get several photos of the exterior, cockpit, and interior. Good photos make a strong impression on buyers. If you’ve made a substantial investment in an upgrade and refurbishment of your helicopter, having a photographer or professional broker take a series of photos at an attractive venue on a nice day should yield some attention-grabbing images.

7. Price the Helicopter Right

One of the most challenging aspects of selling a helicopter is determining an appropriate asking price. Sellers are often influenced by book values more so than by market values, and they decide on a price without understanding the value comparisons. Some sellers price their helicopter with an “I don’t have to sell” mind-set, and thus their asking price has no realistic market value basis. But more commonly, prices are specified as “make-offer” in an effort of Stage Your Helicopter

attracting buyer attention. This is not an effective approach. The most effective way to establish an attractive market asking price is by first knowing the sales price of similar helicopters, then by making substantive value comparisons before settling on an asking price. Better yet, hire a helicopter appraiser or broker familiar with the make and model you’re selling.

8. Relocate the Helicopter to a Buyer-Accessible Location

Occasionally, helicopters are located in remote locations rather than in major metropolitan areas. This can be an issue for buyers. They often take into consideration how easy it will be to travel with their mechanic or pilot to inspect a helicopter. Whether it’s operational or in long-term storage, consider relocating the aircraft to an easily accessible service center with trained mechanics and engineers who can provide maintenance, improvements, a records audit, or technical assistance. This can also be a convenient location where the helicopter can be prepared for post-sale shipping transport or readied for a fly-away departure.

9. Take Advantage of the Professional Broker Difference

During a buyer’s market, such as the one we are now in, it becomes increasingly challenging to sell your own helicopter. Sellers often benefit by engaging a professional broker who is knowledgeable about the seller’s make(s) and model(s). A good broker: • Understands the current market • Can perform detailed valuations • Is able to recommend prudent pre-sale work scopes • Maintains a database of recent sales comparisons • Knows how to market helicopters, and • Has an extensive network. In addition, developing a relationship with a professional broker provides an opportunity to gain market insights and recommendations about helicopter acquisitions and sales.

10. Have a Resale Back-Up Plan

If your helicopter is still on the market after an extended period, then it’s time to consider some alternatives. If, at this point, you haven’t engaged a professional broker, now is the time. He or she can help you evaluate the situation, assess what has been done, and determine if any changes in approach would be appropriate. Consider the possibility of offering the helicopter on a short- or medium-term lease. If your financial institution approves and you’re familiar with leasing, this may be a good alternative. Otherwise, you could contact a broker experienced with leasing who is able to offer marketing services to attract a credit-worthy lessee. If these aren’t attractive options, then be prepared to wait it out. Making Your Helicopter Attractive to Buyers With high-value assets like helicopters, getting the best price in a timely manner can be challenging. While the suggestions offered here are good general practices, the work scope solutions may not always be the best for all helicopters or seller situations. But by developing and implementing creative resale strategies that ensure helicopters are “ready-to-go”, have differentiated value and are priced right, you can expect to receive an optimum market price and sell your helicopter in a relatively short period of time. ■ MAY 2018 HELICOPTER BUYER EUROPE 79
