Quality assurance of the Aero-Sense products All our raw materials are purchased with the necessary conformity documents. Samples of every batch of our different final formulations are analyzed in our internal laboratory facilities. We check for conformity with acceptance tests like appearance, pH, viscosity, specific gravity, flash point, freezing point, solubility,… depending on the final product type. Random checks for effects on rubber and plastic materials, (un)painted surfaces, metals – corrosion are performed periodically by an external laboratory to assure conformity with the specific product type specifications or standards.

NOVEMBER 2013 Moscow-based ViraZH, plans to use the Skyhawks for training purposes at various flight schools throughout western Russia. The order is part of a multi-year agreement between Cessna and ViraZH, with all 79 aircraft set to be delivered by the third quarter of 2014. On completion of the final delivery, ViraZH will have one of the world’s largest fleets of Skyhawk 172 aircraft in operation. EXCEL CENTRE, LONDON, UK – SEP 24-26 Helitech International – A truly international conference and exhibition Day 1 Dr. Norbert Lohl, Certification Director for the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) delivered the keynote address that Eurocopter displays the EC145T2 opened the Helitech International Conference, staged at ExCeL, London, on Tuesday 24th September – run in association with the European Helicopter Association. In a session which focused upon future opportunities and challenges within the rotorcraft sector, Dr Lohl told an international audience that rotorcraft’s growing position within the aviation industry required a responsible approach to certification. He highlighted a series of recent innovations - such as tiltrotor, compound helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), fly-by-wire operating systems and touchscreen interfaces – that necessitate a new certification basis whilst simultaneously reevaluating certification for existing procedures.

Day 2 The conference’s morning session on the second day of Helitech International focused upon the experiences of air ambulance operators across Europe. Gerry Hermer – Aviation Consultant, East Anglian Air Ambulance – began proceedings by making a compelling case in support of Night Helicopter Emergency Medical Services Operations (night HEMS) before passing the floor to a succession of operatives from the UK, Spain, Germany and Norway. The well-attended session heard presentations from: Captain Pete Cumming, Bond Air Services; Captain Alex Stobo, also from Bond Air Services; Captain Carols de la Cruz, INAER; Captain Harald Weber, DRF Luftrettung; and Erik Norman, Norwegian Air Ambulance.

Day 3 The theme for the final day of the Conference was 'Business Challenges and Opportunities,' with the morning proceedings moderated by Dominic Perry, News Editor at Flightglobal. The first speaker was Dr Andrew Black, Director and Head of Analysis at Hawk Associates, who presented an analysis and outlook for the rotorcraft sector, highlighting market forecasts in terms of sales and values as well as sector trends and new market opportunities.

Although overall projections may favour western producers, Dr Black stated that Russian manufacturers will produce the largest number of heavy helicopters between 2013 and 2022, followed by Sikorsky, Boeing and NH Industries. He also warned that the market share of companies in the west could also come under threat from new competitors in the market, including India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd and China’s AVIC, with the light military sector providing them with early opportunities.

Announcements and launches from the show floor Eurocopter, AgustaWestland, Bell Helicopter and PremiAir were amongst a broad range of exhibitors that utilised Helitech International as a platform for an array of significant contract signings and service launches.

SWITZERLAND

Eurocopter took the opportunity to announce that two customers had bought the VIP version of its EC175. These bookings came only six months after the twin-engine, medium-class helicopter was initially introduced to the high-end market with a specially designed elegant and luxurious interior. AgustaWestland announced the establishment of Gulf Helicopters as an AgustaWestland Authorised Training Centre and Milestone Aviation and AgustaWestland signed a multi-aircraft, multi-year framework agreement for the purchase of an undisclosed number of helicopters covering the AW169, AW139 and AW189 models. Bell Helicopter had a highly successful event with a number of announcements being published including an agreement with Avincis Group for the sale of up to 20 helicopters comprised of the Bell 429, Bell 412 and Bell 412EPI aircraft; whilst MD Helicopters stated that the Kurdistan Regional Government placed an order for 12 new MD 530F platforms. The company also revealed the delivery of the first Bell 407GX helicopter in Switzerland to Alpinlift Helikopter AG for utility operations. PremiAir Aviation used Helitech International as a platform to raise awareness of the company’s newly rebranded heliport. Now owned by Graham Avery, PremiAir Aviation has rebranded its Blackbushe Airport facility in Surrey as The West London Heliport. The heliport is designed to offer a cost efficient alternative for the South East region of the UK with landing fees coming in at a third of the price of existing suppliers. If you were wondering what happened to the Seawind, they have been quietly making painstakingly slow progress in their quest to certify the Seawind in Canada and the U.S. What they lacked in funding, they have made up in a resolve to succeed.

took the bold step and decided to develop a stick shaker and pusher system. If an aircraft won’t stall, then you can’t put it in a spin. Exploring new ground, Seawind set out to develop the first General Aviation Stall/Spin Prevention System (SPS). After another year and half of development and testing, Seawind has successfully developed and flight tested a new SPS. The sexy sculptured Seawind will be the first single engine, Part 23, General Aviation Aircraft to have an SPS system. Add to that, Seawind will be the fastest and first all composite amphibian to be certified and that is a truly major accomplishment. Richard Silva, the driving force behind the Seawind, added “without the efforts of John Taylor, our flight analyst, and our Flight Test Team at the Canada National Research Council, and Safe Flight Instrument Corp. we would not have been successful.”

Seawind has just released that it took a year of flight development to try to overcome a regulation that requires an aircraft, even if it totally loses power and enters a deep stall and then a spin, the aircraft must recover in one turn without the use of any power. Because of its amphibious design with the high mounted engine, a wind-milling propeller at zero thrust condition blocks the airflow over the rudder and makes it less than effective. The Slovenian company claims the wing transformation can be done in as little as five minutes using a standard wrench. The shorter wingspan is 41 feet, which also makes the LSA much easier to fit into a hangar. If you already own a Sinus you can remove the wings and replace them with the flexible wings to enjoy the benefits of the wingtip swap. The cost of the Flex wings is about €6,055, and Pipistrel will take the old wings in return. The amount of credit received for the used wings depends on their condition. Customers who are only looking for the shorter wingspan to fit the airplane into a smaller hangar can order the Flex wings without the replacement wingtips for about €3,850.

Pipistrel has introduced a new LSA, which offers the capability of quickly turning the airplane from a motorglider into a cross-country cruiser. The Sinus Flex is a standard Sinus model, which was designed with a 49-foot 1.5-inch wingspan. But the outermost parts of the Flex version's wings are removable and can be substituted for shorter wingtips, giving the Sinus the same wingspan as Pipistrel's Virus - an LSA designed for cross-country flights and flight instruction.

While Sinus owners can essentially turn their airplanes into a Virus (there are some slight differences other than the wings), the opposite is not true. A Pipistrel representative said the reason for this is that the VNE for the Virus is 135 knots, while the Sinus Flex wing is only approved for a VNE of 120 knots.

FIRST BIZAV TURBOPROP ANNIVERSARY Gulfstream recently celebrated the 55th anniversary of the first Gulfstream I (GI) flight. Gulfstream I (GI) twin turboprop The twin-engine flying in the late 1950’s. turboprop was the first aircraft specifically designed and built for business travel. The company delivered 200 GIs between 1958 and 1969, when production ceased. The aircraft was used by many US corporations for business travel, but also saw service with five U.S. government agencies and all branches of the U.S. armed forces. Several of the first Gulfstream aircraft were later converted into commuter Airliners. Today, more than 20 GIs still operate in the US. Several other countries have GIs on their aircraft registry. The largest fleet (with nine aircraft) is operated by Phoenix Air Group, an international aircraft services company based in Cartersville, Georgia.

SWEDISH HART TO FLY AGAIN Swedish vintage aircraft enthusiast, Joakim Westh has revealed his plans to put a Swedishbuilt Hawker Hart back in the air .

The Sinus and Virus are both offered with tailwheel or tricycle landing gear, but once the gear configuration has been selected it cannot be modified.

About 50% of an airframe of one Hart will form the basis of the re-build. One complete Bristol Mercury radial engine, built by Nohab is available for the project. Contemporary documentation such as drawings, technical manuals and photographs, as well as parts are actively being sought. An investigation into the previous history of this Hart’s previous identity is currently underway. The wreckage was originally discovered in Southern Sweden in 1980.

EUROCOPTER’s EMERGENCY FLOTATION GEAR The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for Eurocopter France (Eurocopter) Model EC120B and EC130B4 helicopters with a certain emergency flotation gear (float) installed. This AD requires inspecting the float for chafing of the fabric covering and adding protectors to the float installation to prevent contact between the float and the protruding sections of the installation. This AD was prompted by a report of a float that would not inflate during overhaul because one of the float compartments was punctured due to chafing. The actions of this AD are intended to prevent failure of float and subsequent loss of control of the helicopter during an emergency water landing.

NASA researchers have dropped a 45-footlong helicopter fuselage from a height of about 30 feet to test improved seat belts and seats and advance experimental techniques and crashworthiness data. NASA collaborated with the U.S. Navy, U.S. Army and Federal Aviation Administration on the Transport Rotorcraft Airframe Crash Test Bed full-scale crash tests at Langley's Landing and Impact Research Facility. The Navy provided the CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter fuselages, seats, crash test dummies and other experiments for the test. The Army contributed a litter experiment with a crash test dummy. The Federal Aviation Administration provided a side-facing specialized crash test dummy and part of the data acquisition system. Cobham Life Support-St. Petersburg, a division of CONAX Florida Corporation, also contributed an active restraint system for the cockpit. NASA will use the test results in efforts to improve rotorcraft performance and efficiency, in part by assessing the reliability of high performance, lightweight composite materials. L-3 WESCAM announced today that it has received an acquisition and sustainment contract from the Danish AgustaWestland EH101. Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organization (DALO) to provide a minimum of eight MXTM-15 electrooptical and infrared (EO/IR) imaging systems for the Royal Danish Air Force’s (RDAF) EH101® aircraft.
