Why go on a school trip when you can go on a World Challenge? There are many reasons to choose World Challenge over the other providers claiming to be “just like World Challenge”. In safe hands Our comprehensive safety and back-up provision is what we’re renowned for. All aspects are covered from industry leading medical insurance, a 24-hr staffed Operations Centre, the latest satellite communications equipment, a rapid response team to fly out to you if needed and even our own Western Union Terminal. Learning outcomes A World Challenge is so much more than an expedition and sets out to achieve two key aims: 1. To prepare students for adulthood by opening their eyes to the real world and giving them the attitude and ability to embrace it 2. To facilitate valuable skills development linked to the National Curriculum* The World Challenge ProgrammeTM starts when students sign up and it builds through the months (on average about 15) before departure. It continues through careful facilitation during the expedition and is then rounded up when they return through reviewing, certification and joining an alumni network so friendships can continue for a lifetime.
World Challenge and the National Curriculum Our content rich Programme covers all eight Cross Curriculum Dimensions of the National Curriculum, the Personal Learning and Thinking Skills Framework as well as Learning Outside the Classroom and Curriculum for Excellence. We encourage successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors, all without being an administrative nightmare for teachers.

Earn 70 UCAS points Students have the opportunity to earn up to 70 UCAS points (ASDAN Certificate of Personal Effectiveness Level 3). All information for students is available online and we even help moderate portfolios so you don’t have to. ASDAN Universities Award Every student completing the World Challenge ProgrammeTM automatically gains an ASDAN Universities Award. International Baccalaureate Our programme can be used to fulfil the Creativity, Action and Service and Extended Essay elements of the IB Diploma.

The Build-up phase The Build-up phase of the World Challenge ProgrammeTM is both practical and hugely developmental. It encourages students to take real ownership of their expedition by researching the destination, fundraising to pay their fees and preparing themselves for the mental and physical challenge they are taking on. This process makes them committed to getting 110% out of every day on expedition. We liaise directly with students and parents throughout so you don’t have to.

What does the Build-up consist of? Motivation - World Challenge ProgrammeTM Facilitators visit schools regularly to keep the team motivated. Money Management Programme students work through a step by step programme to help them raise the necessary funds for their trip and learn vital financial skills. Fundraising events - we organise free to enter Challenger Runs and Challenger Abseils for a minimal charge, both available across the UK. We even provide an online fundraiser page for each team’s events.

Resources - students have access to their personal expedition website which is continually updated with video aids, news, reminders, activities and facts to help them prepare. Ongoing communication - students can call a friendly Customer Support Team or a Fundraising Support Team with any questions they may have as well as access online chat forums with World Challenge leaders and staff. Teachers have their own School Support Coordinator. My World Challenge Teachers, students, parents, Local Authorities and Leaders all have log-ins to their personal expedition website to monitor progress at any time.

Training Students complete a two day training expedition. This camping experience encourages team bonding and develops the essential practical skills for expedition life such as risk management, provisioning, cooking, trekking scenario planning, packing a rucksack, erecting a tent, hygiene, nutrition, etc. Teachers and expedition leaders also attend a one day Expedition Preparation Conference to learn the World Challenge safety policies and procedures and discuss their destination in workshops.

In-country acclimatisation Once in-country, time is taken to get used to the terrain, altitude, food, smells and culture as well as to iron out team working issues and handle any admin and planning tasks. The team start to rotate their team leadership roles for the duration of the expedition. An acclimatisation trek helps prepare the team for the tougher challenges to come. Regular reviewing ensures the team learn from any mistakes.

Trekking With 55 destinations to choose from and many different treks in each, the sky really is the limit. Your team can choose a trek to suit their preferred environment and physical ability, you may even use horses, camels or elephants!

From mountain peaks, dense jungles and rich valleys to savannah plains and volcanoes, World Challenge will have something to inspire you and your team. You could be navigating through lush jungles in Costa Rica or Borneo, climbing Mt Kenya, trekking through canyons in Namibia or exploring a remote region of Ladakh, deep in the Indian Himalaya.

What to eat, when to eat, how far to trek, who carries what, what time to wake up... the leader keeps the group safe but lets them make mistakes they will learn from. By the end of their last trek, a group of disparate individuals becomes one united team.

Diary entry from the team “Today was the big one as far as trekking was concerned. We all woke up early in anticipation of 4 hours’ trekking. Once we got over the Pass, then it was downhill most of the way to our overnight camp. The going was quite tough, working against the altitude and heat. We walked together as a group until we were approaching the top, when Laura sprinted ahead to get some photos of us getting to the top. It was a fantastic feeling when we got up there, mainly because we all made it despite some of the team’s illnesses. It was quite surreal thinking that we were higher than Mont Blanc. We got some photos before a group of us took a short walk up a small hill to get some more views of the surrounding valley. Here, we were at 5030m and could see everything for miles around. Community project For many this is the most rewarding part of the expedition where they can experience real cultural interaction. Typically about a week long, students choose from a range of community project options, ranging from building basic amenities in a remote Andean village in Ecuador, renovating classrooms in a Himalayan village or working in a turtle sanctuary.
We also have an expanding range of long term projects where a series of expedition teams will each complete part of a larger project to have an even greater impact on the local community. All our projects are sustainable and will continue to benefit the community long after the team has left and many are now affiliated to a local, national or global charity.
Research shows that parents in particular value this phase of the expedition as they want their children to open their eyes to the real world, away from their computers, TVs and mobile phones where they can put things into perspective. The team leaves their project site with a feeling of having made a difference and wiser for their encounter with people who hold a very different set of values.

The final few days of the expedition is spent relaxing, a chance to take in everything they have seen, felt, done and learnt and to celebrate their new friendships and achievements. Whether sitting on a beautiful beach, visiting the Taj Mahal or experiencing the thrills of white water rafting, the team will review lessons and reflect on future plans.

On returning home, students log back into their personal web page to review their whole experience, capturing the valuable lessons they will carry through life and download their certificate of personal achievement. They will present their experiences back to their school and can join the World Challenge Alumni network. Here they can share experiences, photos and videos on Flickr, Facebook and YouTube and access resources to help make the most of their World Challenge experience on CVs and application forms.

What’s included As our expeditions are tailor made to your requirements, we can’t quote a price until we know what you want to do. Once we’ve given you a price we’ll stick to it and there are no hidden extras.

What is included in our quoted prices: Flights and in-country costs Transport, food, accommodation, guides’ fees, park fees, airport taxes, local equipment purchase or hire and other incountry costs specific to the expedition. No airline surcharges will be passed onto our customers, guaranteed.

Equipment Satellite communications devices, tents, ropes, harnesses, stoves and extensive medical supplies as well as any other group equipment required for your itinerary. Insurance (medical) 24-hour support up from the Operations Centre and all the facilities this has at its disposal, all medical treatment until return to country of origin, search and rescue and casualty evacuation for all team members.

Build-up, preparation and training The World Challenge ProgrammeTM is linked to the National Curriculum and Curriculum for Excellence, Money Management Programme, online resources, destination research, access to fundraising and customer support teams, ASDAN Universities Award, regular meetings with World Challenge staff. Team training expedition, expedition handbooks, individual medical clearance and medical consultancy, Challenger Run, teacher support from the school support coordinator and regional team as well as an Expedition Preparation Conference for all travelling adults.
Leaders and Assistants Each expedition team travels with an Expedition Leader (and an Assistant depending on student : adult ratios) with necessary qualifications and experience, specifically trained and assessed. Medical assistance International medical assistance agency First Assist supports the Operations Centre and is available to us at any time.
What isn’t included: Vaccinations, visas (if required), personal equipment and personal equipment insurance, optional ASDAN CoPE Level 3 Award, transport within the country of origin, pre-departure accommodation close to airport if required and any optional rest and relaxation activities.
