Pat’s patter... Welcome to our first yearbook, a new annual publication that we’ve launched to keep you informed about what’s happening at World Challenge. Whether you’re a parent, Challenger, teacher, Leader or staff member, I hope you find our yearbook informative, helpful and inspiring. This edition features truly inspiring photographs from recent expeditions and is packed with information to help you plan for forthcoming expeditions. It also highlights the work we’re doing to give-back to the people and places we encounter on our travels, and several new initiatives designed to enhance the programme. Safety is a priority in all our activities. It’s crucial that young people can enjoy their expeditions to remote parts of the world safely. We set ourselves very high standards when it comes to managing risk, and invest considerable time and money (see pages 16-17). Sustainable development is also a major focus for us. From minimising our impact on the environment, to investing in projects that really benefit the communities we work with, the whole company is dedicated to making meaningful and lasting improvements (see page 21).

I’m a passionate believer in the power of the World Challenge Programme™. My own journey with the company started in 1995 when I ran my first expedition through my school. As a teacher, I’d organised many trips, but this was something else! So I followed my heart and took a year’s sabbatical, working for World Challenge as a Regional Programme Manager. I never returned to school. Instead, I worked steadily up the ranks and now work closely with Nigel Miller, MD, World Challenge Group.

I’ve not looked back, and I’m now passionate that every member of our World Challenge community has an expedition or employment experience that’s equally life-changing! I’m always open to comments and feedback and will be more than happy to hear from you - just ring or email directly.

NEWS IN BRIEF
Putting our customers first... Our customers are at the heart of everything we do, therefore opinions and all feedback are so important to help our business evolve in a responsive way. See page 19 for more details on the Investor in Customers award that we’ve applied for.
Rewards for referrals... it’s easy!
Putting the fun into fundraising...
Psst... Expeditions at ski-trip prices
We all love talking about our expedition experiences, but now there’s an additional incentive for spreading the word. Introduce a school that goes on to become a new customer and we’ll reward you with a cash sum of up to £500! To find out more
Last year 1,500 students raised £280,000 towards their expedition at the Challenger Events. Taking part is a lot more fun than going it alone, so don’t miss the opportunity to get involved. We’ve seven Challenger Abseils and three Challenger Runs scheduled throughout spring 2011.
Not all of us have the resources to commit to the full World Challenge Programme, so we’ve condensed the essence of it into World Challenge Compact - a one or two-week expedition with a wide range of itineraries. Destinations include North Africa, Europe and the Middle East.
See page 7 for details or log-in to My World Challenge.
For more information on Compact, go to www.school-adventures.co.uk or call to request a brochure.

Photography hy competition n Capturing the fun and magic of a World Challenge expedition in just one photo is a tough call! But Krystina Warrington (Newcastle-under-Lyme School) and Rebecca Malynn (Tormead School) did just that! They’ll both receive £300 as winners of the 2010 photography competition. The standard of entry was extremely high, so well-done to everyone who took part!

7HAT DID YOU LEARN ON EXPEDITION As a Leader, you have to step back. If the Challengers are going to make a mistake that won’t compromise their safety, let them. It’s a great way to learn. 7HAT S YOUR MOST FREQUENT QUESTION “Are our expeditions safe?â€? Answer: It’s our top priority and we lead the ďŹ eld in expedition safety. However, expeditions do carry an element of risk and it’s our job to minimise and manage that. UK-based training expeditions for teams preparing for three-four week expeditions are now even more accessible for everyone involved!
Formerly known as the Expedition Preparation Conference, the Expedition Training Day prepares all travelling School Leaders and Expedition Leaders with lectures and workshops on vital medical, safety and in-country information.
The Training Expedition is a two-day course that allows teams to work together in the ďŹ eld and learn some of the essential skills that will help them in achieving a fun, safe and rewarding overseas expedition. ‘We send our sincere gratitude and appreciation to World Challenge. The support given to the guides by Mr Roy Jarvis was of high quality and the guides are enlightened by the World Challenge ethos. Everyone enjoyed the survival techniques - the rope work, river-crossings and ďŹ rst-aid. His enthusiasm really encouraged our guides’.

STUDENTS AND TEACHERS from Westcliff High School for Girls were in Morocco at the time and were forced to stay an extra week. Below is feedback from their Headteacher. “...during this time the support provided by World Challenge was outstanding. The team were exceptionally well looked after in a quality hotel and you went out of your way to arrange for the group to undertake activities during this extra week. I also know that a great deal of time and effort was spent trying to secure a passage home for the team and we were extremely grateful that you were able to secure them on one of the ďŹ rst ights out of Morocco. Deb has spent the last 18 years paddling, with career highlights that include captaining the British Ladies White Water Rafting team and competing in six World Championships. But she’s equally dynamic out of her kayak as she is in! She is Chairperson of the English White Water Rafting Committee, UK Representative on the International Rafting Federation Committee and holds a list of relevant qualiďŹ cations as long as your arm. Having also led a number of World Challenge expeditions, she’s the perfect addition to our highly qualiďŹ ed and experienced team.

'IVING THE GREEN LIGHT With environment as one of the three components of the World Challenge ethos, it follows that the company is 100% committed to sustainable growth. So just what are we doing to ensure the well-being of the world in years to come? Ensuring sustainable growth in a company that relies on sending thousands of people across the world by plane is a tough job, albeit one worth doing. And who better to take on the task than World Challenge’s dedicated Sustainability Team. They’ll be rallying everyone round to meet an ambitious strategy for the year ahead, building on what we’re already doing to become a truly sustainable business.
! COMMITMENT TO REDUCING OUR OFlCE CARBON FOOTPRINT BY IN The team has been busy recording the company’s carbon footprint - from paper usage, energy consumed and travel habits in 2009 - in order to set reduction targets for the whole business over a one to three year period. -ORE ALLIANCES WITH .ATIONAL 0ARK !UTHORITIES We hope to minimise any negative impact of our expeditions by ensuring teams get involved in sustainable activities, such as reforestation and beach clean-ups, as well as providing training for the guides who work in the parks (see our In-country Guide Training initiative article on pages 12 and 13).
And Alex Auden, who leads the team, is thrilled with how staff are already engaging with the project, saying ‘we don’t need to look past the number of ideas ooding in to our new @'REENHOUSE 0OINTS 3CHEME for evidence of our staff’s commitment!’
'REENER OFlCE POLICIES AND ENERGY SAVING GIZMOS
But ideas won’t change the world. It’s what we do with them that matters! So here’s what we’re doing next year that will impact positively on the well-being of the people we meet and the places we inhabit, as we go about our business.
Of course we’re already doing a lot to promote sustainability in our business, from off-setting staff ights (and giving the Challengers the opportunity to do so), researching and running really worthwhile, sustainable expedition projects, educating Challengers on responsible travel, incentivising staff to travel to work by bike or train, a Charity Day Scheme and incentivising in-house fundraising.
