The Church: The exact date of the beginning of the Lord's work in Benin is unknown. Brother Godfried Kwao is, however, known to be the first to organize a congregation in the south-western part of the country. Godfried was recruited by the Benin government from Ghana to teach English language in the high school system in Benin in 1983. George Akpabli, also from Ghana, went to Benin in February 1992 and met Godfried. George went as a missionary under the oversight of the Benton Church of Christ. The Church of Christ was officially registered by George with the Benin government on 13 May, 1992. Today there are 73 congregations in Benin. There is an effective preacher training school situated in Cotonou under the leadership of George Akpabli. This school has trained 92 Gospel preachers for 10 French-speaking nations of Africa. Historically, voodoo originated in Benin, so its influence can still be seen in local superstitions, celebrations, markets, music, and religion.
