REPORT 2018

Voice of Peace on Air

Methodological Note For this seventh edition of the Annual Report information were taken from several World Family’s departments and individuals: > Administration > Communication managers > Technical Services > Continental Managers The information contained herein comes from the following sources: > Minutes of the meetings and of the Board > Letters, e-mails and communications to and from the stakeholders > The Association’s management documents > Reports from head of departments > Reports from partners and local offices The document was approved by the General Assembly held on 27th of June 2019 and will be distributed by means of circulars, newsletters and through the World Family’s institutional website. The Annual Report refers to the World Family of Radio Maria ONLUS, and also contains a few pieces of information concerning its main stakeholders, which are mainly Associations from several countries.

D

during our international congress in October 2018 in Italy, once more we experienced the universal dimension of Radio Maria thank to the presence of delegations of more than 84 countries. This annual report shows clearly the numbers of such worldwide development of World Family of Radio Maria Onlus. The great value of the common vision comes from serving people through partnerships with local associations, ecclesial institutions and receiving contributions and support from people of good will in all the continents.

During the year considered in this report, the commitment in Africa and in Asia continued tirelessly. Furthermore it caused an expansion of activities in new countries as more local Dioceses and associations requested for a partnership with World Family of Radio Maria Onlus. We realized a new radio in Lesotho, in Angola and in Iraq and in the next future we will concentrate to continue to develop new projects in Middle East and Africa where already our staff have being working on feasibility studies. Since its foundation, World Family of Radio Maria Onlus is engaged with many projects in Developing Countries, with several no profit partners mostly Ngos on the fields. In the last years like in 2018, our work was particularly oriented to the regions of the World with dramatic conflicts: we really respond to the call from local population and communities by helping institutions, working directly with local Catholic Dioceses. This makes the work of World Family of Radio Maria Onlus really unique in the panorama of communication being in the first line to give hope to the really forgotten people of our society and of the least region of the world.

Personal and spiritual growth are essential components of the development process and the fact that Radio Maria promotes local cultures ensures the development of human being in its universal rights and values where communication plays an important training role. We invested time and funds to consolidate and expand the radio frequency network and to develop digital tools that our partners may use to keep on communicating to their listeners and followers in a state-of-the-art way, even where economic and social circumstances make it generally more difficult. We reached the goal of a 3 years project: practically all of our partners are already present in smartphones application and in the web and in social media including especially developing countries in Africa, Asia, Latina America and also in East Europe, assisting them to reach millions of people with their message of peace, respect, brotherhood and responsible citizenship.

W

world family of radio maria was founded and registered in Italy in 1998 as a non-profit association to help people from several countries in the world to develop locally the Radio Maria project. In fact the Radio Mara Italy was receiving many requests from Bishops, clergy and lay people to have the same kind of radio and programs in their own country. Therefore World Family of Radio Maria was registered with the specific task to respond to such calls and work with local partners for Evangelization and development through communication.

world family worked in more then 70 countries in the world. In the year 2018 there were 54 projects in progress, here we report few of them, chosen for their particular importance in the country and the impact they have on the people who benefit from them. World Family is committed to give voice to the voiceless supporting her partners to assist those categories of people who are forgotten or hidden by the society. This concerns both ethnical minorities and people living in rural areas like in Congo, Guatemala, Uganda, Papua New Guinee, Tanzania, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, Romania, Kosovo and also social divisions helping partners to fill the gap between the wealthy and the poor by involving the latter in communication and education activities like in Liberia, in Sierra Leone, in Rwanda, in Burundi, in Brazil.

Angola

Communication for Peace. At the Service of People Where: Luanda and Viana, Angola Partners: Diocese of Viana, Associaçao Radio Maria

As the Diocese of Viana covers more than 2,5 milion people in the outskirt of the capital, the Bishop requested to have Radio Maria in order to help the Church with the Evangelization and the educational work. In Viana suburbs most of people are low income citizens, and many among them are vulnerable people. The radio aims at addressing the social and cultural needs of this part of the populations, by broadcasting programs that help individuals and families improve their lives. In particular radio programs given by psychologists, doctors and social workers will help all those people who don’t usually have access to such services offered by private and public clinics. In the anonymity of the listenership vulnerable people will have chance to receive useful information.

Rwanda

For the ones who are more in need, the radio will organize a free consultancy service with psychologists. The radio started its operation on 19th of December 2018.

Strengthening Structures for Social Communication Where: Youndé and Edea, Camerun Partner: Association Radio Mara Camerun

Development of a people passes also through the cultural development. WF supports Radio Maria Camerun in its educational initiatives aimed at spreading a culture of integration and cohesion. The radio offers programs realized by local personalities and volunteers spreading knowledge about local culture. A particular attention is given to some of the vulnerable category of people like minors (children and teenagers) and aged people, who more than other follow such programs. WF is supporting by providing structural interventions at the headquarter and on the network of the radio.

Project for the Integration through Social Communication Mozambique

Where: Mozambique, regions of Maputo, Gaza, Inhambane Partner: Diocese of Quelimane, Radio Maria Mozambique Diocese of Quelimane requested to have a section of Radio Maria Mozambique. In fact this reaches at the moment only the three southern province of the country: Maputo, Gaza and Inhambane. Including Quelimane, a city located in Zambezia, in the central part of the country which was affected by floods in recent time, in a wider Catholic network, means to contribute to build a national sentiment of the Catholics in Mozambique. In Quelimane people speak a different language then in the southern Mozambique, therefore a small studio will be installed in order to promote local culture and integrate it with the rest of the network. Producing educational and cultural programs is a way to promote people and their heritage integrating them in a nationwide vision.

Disclosing Kibeho to the World. Social Communication Infrastructure Where: Kibeho, Rwanda Partner: Sanctuary of Kibeho In collaboration with the Sanctuary of Kibeho run by Pallottinian Fathers, WF has activated a studio which serves to spread the word of the Mother of the Verb from Rwanda to the world. Following the apparitions of the Virgin Mary in the 80s in Kibeho, thousands of pilgrims visit the Sanctuary every month. Radio Maria studio in Kibeho will be at the service of all radios which will link up to get programs directly produced at the sanctuary. Through the waves the message of conversion, peace and love will be spread rapidly to millions of people in the world.

A Dialogue for Peace

Give Voice to the Voiceless. A Project for Social Communication in Abuja Nigeria

Where: Abuja, Nigeria Partner: Archdiocese of Abuja

Siria

Where: Aleppo and Damasco, Siria Partners: Maronite Diocese of Aleppo, Greek Catholic Patriarchate and Catholic Archdiocese of Damasco, Association Peace and Reconciliation

In response to the need of the Archdiocese of Abuja to have a media which can disseminate radio programs aimed at improving spiritual, emotional and social life of people living in Abuja, in particular the vulnerable ones. Radio broadcasting is a valid alternative to official education which is not accessible by the poorest in the society. WF is setting the foundations of a radio, supporting in the acquisition of frequencies, installation of equipment, training people involved in the project. Population in Abuja is more than 3 million people, 15% of them are Catholics.

The need for Christians in Siria, minority in the country, not to be isolated but integrated in a wider community is at the foundation of this project. Mani Dioceses are connected to Radio Mariam, an international web radio in Arabic language, and in that way they actively participate to the programs of the radio, not only by praying from their Parishes, but also by producing spiritual and educational programs which are aired by Radio Mariam. The methodology used in this project to build peace in Siria is giving opportunities to dialogue with Sirian Christians with those of other Middle East countries and boosting the spiritual and social growth of listeners and volunteers in Aleppo and Damasco.

A Voice of Peace in Erbil Iraq

Where: Erbil, Iraq Partners: Diocese of Erbil, Association Peace and Reconciliation, Charity and Peace Organization for Culture and Media

Communicate to Inform and Protect Vulnerable People Honduras

Where: Honduras Partner: Associacion Radio Maria Honduras

Peace, reconciliation and integration are the objectives of this project located in Erbil in the northern part of a country where the population has lived in fear and danger for decades because of war and Islamic extremism. Radio Mariam in Erbil is the first Catholic radio in Iraq and a point of reference among the social communication means for those Christians which are persecuted and live in minority. Programs aired by Radio Mariam are followed not only by Catholics but also by people of different religions and denominations that find in them words of hope, love and consolation.

In a society where violence is present at many level, Radio Maria Honduras started activities to increase knowledge about non-violence, tolerance and non-abusive behaviors. Beneficiaries are in particular two categories of vulnerable people: children and old, who are normally among the most abused. The project intends to diffuse knowledge which will boost habits to bettering personal communication in families and in schools. Non-abusive behaviors start with non-abusive language: communication experts share methods and technics for a better way to live human relationships in the daily life.
