What is Radio Maria?
Radio as an instrument of conversion By its very nature it is a missionary instrument as St. Paul says, “faith comes from what is heard” (Rom 10:17).
Father Livio Fanzaga WFRM Directors’ Advisor & RM Italy Director
G
od chooses the simplest tools to reach people. He used a book to communicate his Word and preaching to spread it. Radio lies within the perspective of spreading the word. Certainly, the instrument of the radio bears a voice that, from the mouth of the speaker, reaches the ears of those listening: fides ex auditu, “faith comes from what is heard” (Rom 10:17). Proclaiming the Word of God was the great means used by Jesus Christ and the apostles: “Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved” (Mk 16:15–16). Radio is a simple and effective means for propagating the Gospel. Technological evolution has made it a capillary tool that reaches people wherever they are. By its nature, radio is a missionary instrument. The voice reaches the heart and challenges it. Under the
impulse of grace, it becomes an instrument of conversion. When the Radio Maria adventure began in 1987, no one could have imagined the current panorama, with 81 radios and 19 local language stations planted throughout the continents with a following of around 35 million listeners and 20,000 passionate volunteers. Looking back, those of us who have walked this path from the beginning are amazed and wonder how a project of such magnitude could ever have been accomplished. The wonder is even greater when you think that everything has been accomplished without radio experts and without funding that was not offered by listeners, constantly navigating through troubled waters according to the rule common to all things from God. The spirit of Radio Maria cannot be fully understood if one tries to merely define it

as a religiously-inspired station. To grasp its unmistakable strength and charm it is necessary to say that it is a radio that proclaims conversion. Through Radio Maria, the Virgin wants to give the Church a voice to awaken faith and call our generation—lost in the darkness and shadow of death, of atheism, and of materialism—to conversion. Proclaiming conversion is Radio Maria’s profound energy. It is our concern with “saving souls” that takes this radio station beyond the enclosure of the fold, where the faithful are safe, to call even the most distant, announcing
forgiveness, mercy, and hope to them. The medium of the radio—arriving everywhere that people are and penetrating into all places of desperation where God seems absent—is extraordinarily suitable for this missionary dimension, which is so absolutely urgent and necessary today. A true Radio Maria is not only listened to by the faithful who are fond of it, but also by many of those who are far away, but who carry a nostalgia for God in their hearts. The multiplication of testimonies of listeners who claim to have returned to the faith and to Christian life means that our stations are fulling the task that Mary has entrusted us with well.

cording to steadfastly efficient criteria, at the service of our listeners. With this determination, the simple medium of radio has proven effective throughout the world, especially in countries where freedom of thought and the media seemed not to offer any possibilities.
The first phase, from the end of the 1980’s to the beginning of the 1990’s, saw Radio Maria develop in Italy, thanks also to the profound spiritual involvement of millions of Italian listeners. They are the ones who have supported the Radio’s growth, making it a wonderful national reality and then, little by little, an international one. Requests from Christians in Latin America and Europe followed, to which were added important appeals from African bishops.
After the fall of the Berlin Wall then, the transition to a market economy took place, gradually preparing the way for private television and radio channels, especially in Eastern Europe. Between the end of the 90’s and the first years of the third millennium, Radio Maria thus became a precious reality for the Catholic Church’s pastoral care in the countries of the former communist bloc. Each broadcasting station has managed to integrate its programs into the great diversity of the Eastern Catholic Churches and has had constructive dialogue with the Orthodox Church.
The next phase was an obligatory step: establishing an international association that would gather together this spontaneous universal call of the Church in the world and organize it ac-

and more fragmented public. Surprisingly, Radio Maria’s audience is still growing, adapting to mobile phones, social networks, and new technologies, and even enjoying success with these media, a success that seemed undreamed of by most. This has all been possible because the message of Christian hope is more relevant than ever and the new instruments have given it new opportunities. People seek God everywhere, at every latitudes, and this reality can be seen by simple audience statistics, especially on the web were the data are incontestable.
In the first decade of the third millennium, Radio Maria has almost always managed to become a national radio station in the countries where it has arrived. Moreover, in many subSaharan African countries, it has reached the most remote villages, thus becoming an essential instrument in the Church’s social life and pastoral care.

I
t is comforting for the spirit to look back at the first steps that Radio Maria has taken in the Americas and at the progress that it has achieved today. Starting from the founding of Radio Maria Peru— in 1994, the year when programming began with an hour broadcast from a local station— initiatives were born that gradually managed to bring a Catholic voice into the homes of those living in most of the countries in the Americas, totalling 22 nations to date. The American reality presents, now as never before, a series of challenges that affect the task of evangelization. Continents of hope, second in size only to Asia, the Americas have 1 billion inhabitants and a geography characterized by a strong climactic diversity. Ancestral
multiculturalism and a striking multilingualism beyond English, Spanish, and Portuguese delineate a religious reality that challenges Catholic identity. In today’s world, Radio Maria’s presence in the American continents plays a very important role in the evangelizing mission of the Church. However, the strong anti-Catholic religious proselytism has shaped a new status of Catholic religious reality. In some countries, the decline in vocations to the priesthood and the consecrated life has reached worrisome levels. Clericalism, as the Holy Father has called it, is also a “temptation that does damage to the Church in Latin America and prevents the proper formation of Christian maturity and responsibility among the laity” (Mexico City, 18

The political situation in many countries, whose governments incite a rejection of the Church’s prophetic voice and where the freedom of religion is threatened, is causing dangerous clashes. The current condition of our ecclesial history puts the question to us since, in the face of the situations mentioned above, our
responsibility to carry out the mission entrusted to Radio Maria remains constant: to announce conversion, the ever-present call to “return to the Father’s house”. From the heart of Our Most Holy Mother, her radio will continue to proclaim the Good News to the world. It is spring time for Radio Maria in the American continents.

t is no exaggeration to say that the challenge that Radio Maria is facing in the Old Continent has an almost epochal scope. The contemporary world, and especially the globalized West, seems to have lost and denied its own roots. This is why, among other reasons, the mission of evangelization that Radio Maria carries out daily finds itself contextualized in a very particular area where the crisis of faith and de-Christianization have led to an almost total indifference toward the sacred.
Pope Francis, in a conference with the Italian Church summarized that thought as follows: “One could say that today we are not living an epoch of change so much as an epochal change. The situations that we are living in today therefore pose new challenges which, at times, are also difficult for us to understand. Our time requires us to live problems as challenges and not as obstacles: the Lord is active and at work in our world.” The strength of the Project that we are disseminating throughout the continents lies precisely in the fact that it is a Project of Providence, reminding every person 12

that Christianity is the only revealed religion capable of saving humanity through personal encounter with Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
DANIELE TRENCA
“We are not living an epoch of change so much as an epochal change”
That is why Radio Maria cannot fail to take up the witness of this important challenge. Every radio in Europe has become a “field hospital” to accompany those who have
been left by the wayside and to help those who have never been able to know true Love. That is, a Love (with a capital “A”) that needs to be cultivated day after day. Pope Francis We are certain that, as St. Paul says in his letter to the Romans: “Where sin increased, grace overflowed all the more” (Rom 5:20).

Africa: the continent of hope
A people who never cease hoping for a better life but, above all, hoping in God because their thirst for Love is still so great.

n the international scene, Africa is becoming an economic interlocutor for the great world powers. Africa is a new market, where consumption is increasing day by day. It is a market where the great economic powers do not want to lose their slice of the cake. Africa is the continent of hope for those world economies that are growing and want to go beyond their saturated markets. Africa is the continent of hope because Africans themselves never stop hoping. Although living conditions are among the lowest in the world, Africans continue to hope for a better life, but above all they continue to hope in God. Africans have a great thirst for God. Africa has been little involved in the ideologies
that have characterized the twentieth century. It is true that it has been tragically affected: the division due to the Cold War and the formations by both sides served as a backdrop to the real wars for the domination of resourcerich territories, but it has been an influence by reflection. Since the ideologies coming from the West have only created a faรงade, without any true inculturation, it is true that you can still find persons in Africa who, not having been indoctrinated, remain much more genuine. One can more easily find the essentiality of the human being. It is in our essentiality, among those needs that the human person has, that there is also contact and relationship with the divine. For the vast majority of Africans, it is normal to turn to God every day in their daily lives: to thank him

WORLD FAMILY OF RADIO MARIA AFRICA: THE CONTINENT OF HOPE
for the food on their plate, to ask that a family member find work, or a friend be healed from illness, to praise God for his love that manifests itself, to beg him for the harvest to feed their family, etc. Africans have never stopped hoping and trusting in an omnipresent God. In Africa, the people are thirsty for God, they want to know God. Faced with so much hope and thirst for God, the Church has the responsibility of fulfilling its mission of evangelization. If there are those who hope in Africa for its economic resources and new markets, the Church hopes with the Africans in the God of life and continues to spread the message of Jesus’ love with them. Radio Maria accompanies this work of evangelization done by Africans for Africans. At the moment this article was written, there are twenty-four African countries where Radio Maria is present and at least five others have requested it. It is a sign that evangelization

continues, that the thirst for God cannot be quenched. The Church also seeks to serve this desire through the radio. Radio Maria remains at the service of a Church that, in the African continent, still has much work to do to bring Jesus to every person.

Radio Mariam’s mission is directed toward all Arabic-speaking Christians in the world, to be their voice, particularly in an area of the East where Christians still suffer persecution and death because of their faith. It was no accident that the World Family of Radio Maria chose Rome for Radio Mariam’s headquarters. It is a great sign that, from the heart of the Church and close to the tomb of the apostle Peter, faith continues to shine and is strengthened with the Word of Christ.
For this reason, it is a unique project of evangelization. Radio Mariam’s mission takes place in the Middle East through various mobile studios in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, and soon, Egypt. All this is made possible by listeners and donors who wholeheartedly help Radio Mariam be a sign of unity and brotherhood between the various religious denominations present in the Middle East. Radio Mariam prays to the Lord in the various rites of the Eastern Christian Churches. This is a true call to the fraternal love to which Pope Francis calls us: to dialogue with other religions and with all Christians. Radio Mariam also broadcasts in the various dialects present in the Arab world in order to be near to every Christian and every family in loving Christ and serving others in charity.

adio Maria’s widespread presence throughout Italy and the simplicity of the medium of radio means that we are able to penetrate into all environments and areas of individual and communal life. We have realized that precisely the most critical conditions, such as imprisonment, are precious, even privileged areas of listening, reflection, consolation, and conversion.
Radio Maria’s small blue radio sets, shaped in the image of the Madonna and Child, are an immediate call to prayer and a message of tenderness, hope, and life. Collaborating with chaplains and other workers in the penal system who give the radio sets to prisoners, Radio Maria’s voice can enter cells and go straight to the hearts of many inmates. Prisoners can join in a day of prayer and meditation on Radio Maria. The small sets have been specially designed to comply with the strict criteria of prison security.
Only the Christian proclamation can withstand the challenge of creating a space of forgiveness and redemption, of freedom and happiness in every situation, even the most painful.
A prisoner who receives the radio, the rosary, and the prayer booklet feels valued: someone believes in them, believes that they are still able to choose good. 26

We have chosen to serve the prison chaplains. Free of charge, we send the small radio sets, the rosaries, and the prayer booklets to chaplains who are the ones who distribute them, providing them the opportunity and the tools to approach and comfort prisoners. And the prisoners are urged to begin a journey that leads them attend the Sacraments, and Sunday Mass. Another advantage is that, in this way, the radios go precisely those who need them the most. The figures speak for themselves: 80% of people who leave prison at the end of their sentence no longer go back to commit crimes if they have lived a path of conversion in prison. When this path is not followed, the percentages are reversed.

The broadcasts also aim at being an apostolate of social promotion, trying to make the reality of prison understood outside of the reality of jail. t is not difficult to understand that we are at a unique phase in the history of humanity. Signs are constantly appearing, which Jesus advised us to attend: “When its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves, you know that summer is near” (Mt 24:32). One of these signs is Mary (see Rev 12:1), who has appeared in many places as Mother and Queen to call the Church and all of humanity to return to God. Guadalupe, Paris, Lourdes, Fatima, Amsterdam, Kibeho, Medjugorje and other shrines generate an overall concept through which Our Lady hopes to renew the Church and humanity, preparing us for the second coming of Christ “with power and great glory” (Mt 24:30).
St. Louis de Montfort already understood this, 300 years ago “If Jesus Christ, the head of mankind, is born of her, the predestinate, who are members of this head, must also as a necessary consequence be born of her. One and the same mother does not give birth to the head without the members nor to the members without the head.” He continues: “As she was the way by which Jesus first came to us, she will again be the way by which he will come to us the second time though not in the same manner.” (Treatise on True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin) As a worldwide radio network dedicated to Our Lady, we have the privilege of putting ourselves in the service of Our Lady’s plan. This occurs above all through our programming, with which we help millions of people to grow in faith and prayer.

our listeners. We have therefore begun to install local studios in Medjugorje (Europe), Kibeho (Africa), and Nazareth (Asia) with the necessary technical equipment to offer to all our radios the possibility of broadcasting Masses, Rosaries, catecheses, and testimonies from these shrines. In this way, we want to offer to the sick, to the poor, and to those who could never go on a pilgrimage, the opportunity to participate in the graces of these shrines. This is why we also want to bring the prayer and spirituality of the various Marian shrines to
The Virgin Mary will certainly set out to visit them personally! (see Lk 1:39)

Mary in our times

n addition to programs specifically focused toward migrants and refugees, Radio Maria also seeks to be near them in a special way every time that it sets up a mobile studio in a refugee camp to broadcast a live Eucharistic celebration. Thanks to this physical and pastoral closeness, other listeners are discovering, at least in some small way, the painful realities of refugees. Radio Maria thus becomes a “spokesperson” for this social category, whose members often live in the uncertainty of what tomorrow will bring. Among the migrants and refugees who are linked to Radio Maria, there is the special case of African immigrants listening from European countries. Taking advantage of the availability of Radio Maria’s signal over the internet, many

of these people carefully follow the Radio Maria of their respective countries. One of Radio Maria’s listeners of the Democratic Republic of the Congo who has emigrated to Europe considers Radio Maria from his country as “the umbilical cord that connects him to his native land”. These African immigrant listeners are also donors to the Radio Marias of their countries of origin. Sometimes they form a club or group supporting Radio Maria. By regularly listening to Radio Maria from their respective countries, these listeners from the African diaspora draw from Africa’s spiritual treasure of values, which can facilitate their integration into European society. In any case, for migrants and refugees as

well, Radio Maria is a house of prayer, a doctrinal school of the Church, and a large Marian family that allows listeners to connect

with other listeners so that we may all share in Our Mother’s maternal tenderness together under the Virgin’s mystical cloak.
