About SCAN Health Our Vision To advance global capacity to adopt and scale best practices in healthcare supply chain to offer traceability of products and care processes from bench to bedside to patient outcomes.

What We Do SCAN Health is a Networks of Centres of Excellence (NCE) funded by the federal government of Canada to accelerate knowledge translation and address key problems, challenges and opportunities of high strategic importance for health systems in Canada and around the globe. Spanning five countries, including Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States – and with over one hundred partners from industry, healthcare, government and academia – SCAN Health will enable the exchange of information and expertise to accelerate the implementation of healthcare supply chain best practices around the world.

Our Strategic Initiatives Knowledge Mobilization Platform An online collaborative space for users to connect and discuss healthcare supply chain challenges and successes through online forums, learning material and dynamic tools. Virtual Business Case Competition A virtual competition to build knowledge and leadership capacity in undergraduate and graduate students to better understand the uniqueness of health sector supply chain challenges. Design Competition An innovative approach for solution providers to work collaboratively with a health system partner to solve real-world challenges and achieve positive care outcomes. Networking Event An annual, multi-stakeholder event to enable collaborative partnerships and knowledge exchange on key supply chain initiatives for health systems. Clinically Integrated Supply Outcomes Model (CISOM) A Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) maturity model to guide and support health organizations to implement and scale clinically integrated supply chain infrastructure to advance quality and safety in health systems.

Message from the Board President At no point in our history has the capacity of global health sector supply chains been more essential than right now as we face and overcome a pandemic of epic proportions. Due to COVID-19, health systems around the world are experiencing shortages in essential equipment, compromising the safety of healthcare workers, patients and communities. These challenges can be overcome with an automated and integrated supply chain infrastructure resulting in an adequate inventory of medical supplies, accurate case reporting and overall higher-performing health systems with positive care outcomes for all. By connecting our incredible partners, SCAN Health continues to mobilize knowledge about the strategic importance of supply chain transformation in global health systems. Today, supply chains are at the forefront of healthcare delivery models as it has the capacity to achieve cost savings, quality and safety for health systems during these unprecedented times. In 2019, SCAN Health was awarded an exceptional score for our delivery of value and impact by the Government of Canada’s NCE. Further, the Monitoring Committee noted that our collaborative approach could be adopted as a model for other areas. As the first NCE-funded network hosted at a business school, we are very proud that SCAN Health has been acknowledged with such a rare honour for our progress to increase knowledge and collaboration in such a critically important area. Our dedicated Board of Directors, Expert Advisory Council and partners from around the world are united by a shared vision to improve population health outcomes while accelerating economic growth. Together, we are driving global capacity to advance our healthcare supply chains to offer traceability of products and care processes from bench to bedside to patient outcomes. By mobilizing a network of international partners and citizens we can find new opportunities to drive essential enhancements while achieving value for patients, families, health systems and businesses. Message from the Scientific Director & CEO I am so proud of the work SCAN Health has accomplished in the past year and it is more important now than ever before. Today, health systems are struggling to manage a pandemic sweeping across every jurisdiction in the world. An integrated and digital supply chain infrastructure leverages predictive analytics to enable clinicians and supporting staff to track and trace all aspects of a healthcare journey to ensure healthcare provider teams have the products and equipment required to deliver safe and high-quality patient care. The future of sustainable health systems and the safety of global populations will rely on predictive analytics enabled through robust supply chain infrastructure and fearless leadership. SCAN Health continues to lead knowledge mobilization on the value and impact of supply chain transformation in health systems with the support and collaboration of a global network including clinicians, healthcare leaders, private industry, policy makers, researchers and citizens. A significant milestone this year for SCAN Health was the launch of the ground-breaking CISOM in partnership with HIMSS. The CISOM provides a strategic pathway to strengthen supply chain infrastructure to track processes and products used in care, by mobilizing data to create real-world evidence of impact and outcomes for patient populations. Health systems use the CISOM to create an automated supply chain infrastructure at the point of care in their organization to proactively identify risk of adverse events. This enables proactive interventions that strengthens quality and safety for patients and improves system performance. Together with HIMSS and our partners, we look forward to advancing the adoption of the CISOM to strengthen safety and quality of care outcomes for patients, ensuring protective equipment is always available to secure the safety of health providers and enabling automated work environments through supply chain infrastructure to improve performance and cost of patient care delivery. Our exceptional results are made possible by the leadership and expertise of our Board of Directors, Expert Advisory Council, the NCE, our staff and international partners. Knowledge Mobilization Platform Enabling Global Discussion and Collaboration

SCAN Health’s Knowledge Mobilization (KM) platform is a collaborative space for users to connect and discuss healthcare supply chain challenges and successes through online forums, learning material and dynamic tools. Collaborators on the KM platform include industry experts, clinicians, health system leaders, citizens, academics and policy makers around the world. This year, the KM platform expanded to host partner websites presenting an opportunity for organizations to position themselves as worldwide leaders in the area of supply chain transformation. This will expand capacity for robust discussion and debate about best practices, innovation and research that will contribute to informing evidence-based decision-making, understanding the value of new technologies and building stronger collaboration required to transform healthcare supply chains.

SCAN Health launched its inaugural “Ask the Expert” webinar this year with Dr. Randy Bradley, Associate Professor, Haslam College of Business at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. This webinar explored the critical topic of cybersecurity risks in healthcare supply chains including threats to patient privacy and personal health information. “Given the increasing connectedness of various forms of medical devices and equipment, operational technologies, as well as potential points of vulnerability across the continuum of the healthcare value chain, it is vital that supply chain leaders be aware of potential threats as it pertains to outside partners or providers,” says Dr. Bradley. Dr. Bradley discussed the essentials of cybersecurity and helped participants understand the anatomy of a security breach and how to take practical steps that could potentially reduce breaches in their organizations. SCAN Health develops webinars covering topics at the forefront of the global healthcare supply chain conversation and are accessible on the KM platform.

Virtual Business Case Competition Cyber Hygiene and Security in Health Systems

The competition engages interdisciplinary, undergraduate and graduate student teams from renowned business schools around the world to tackle a current health system challenge. This year’s competition attracted 30 student teams from Canada, Europe, India, Indonesia and the U.S. The teams showcased their knowledge, skills and innovative solutions to advance supply chain and cyber hygiene in the health sector. As future business and healthcare leaders, this competition provided an opportunity for students to build leadership capacity and knowledge of how supply chains can support system performance and positive outcomes. Students took on the role of a consulting team advising a large health system on the development of a cybersecurity strategy that is inclusive of the supply chain. Strategies addressed cybersecurity threats, potential points of vulnerability, the growing issue of gray markets and counterfeit products and monetization of cyber hygiene capabilities. A global panel of health system leaders with supply chain expertise judged the students' solutions and provided exclusive feedback to support students' learning.

Design Competition

Seeking a Single Source of Truth for Product Data SCAN Health partnered with the Healthcare Transformation Group (HTG), an action-oriented collaboration comprised of six U.S. healthcare systems: Geisinger Health System, Intermountain Healthcare, Kaiser Permanente, Mayo Clinic, Mercy and Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System (FMOLHS) on this year’s design competition. Consistency, completeness and accuracy of product data was identified by HTG as a key challenge across global healthcare supply chains. This competition created a unique opportunity for industry, academia and health system partners to collaborate and respond to the challenge with solutions and expertise. A single source of truth for product data based on global standards enables tracking and tracing of products and processes across the supply chain to enhance system performance, sustainability and safety. Proposals were adjudicated by an international panel of judges including experts in supply chain, logistics and health system transformation. Networking Event

Achieving the Single Source of Truth The 3rd Annual SCAN Health Global Networking Event (SCANH2019), was hosted by FMOLHS on October 22nd, 2019 in Baton Rouge, U.S. The event brought together leaders from industry, healthcare leaders, researchers, policy makers and citizens to exchange knowledge about transformative supply chain strategies that advance quality, safety and sustainability in health systems around the globe. This year’s theme focused on the critical importance of sharing and securing clean data to improve health system performance and patient outcomes. The dialogue and networking opportunities explored how complete and accurate product data across the supply chain can support a clinically integrated system that promotes a better understanding of what care works best for a given patient and under what conditions best outcomes are achieved.

Clinically Integrated Supply Outcomes Model The Clinically Integrated Supply Outcomes Model (CISOM) was launched this year by HIMSS. The eight stage (0-7) maturity model provides a strategic pathway to track processes and products used in care, by linking product and procedure data to patient outcomes data to create real-world evidence of impact and outcomes for patient populations. Health systems use the CISOM to create an automated supply chain infrastructure at the point of care in their organization to proactively identify risk of adverse events and cue clinicians to risk. This enables proactive interventions to prevent adverse events, which in turn, strengthens quality and safety for patients and improves system performance. The model guides organizations to adopt and implement four key focus areas to achieve a clinically integrated data infrastructure in clinical settings: 1. Automation 2. Clinical Integration 3. Predictive Data Analytics 4. Organizations engaging in the CISOM are able to measure progress along each of these four dimensions, documenting patient safety and quality outcomes as they achieve new capabilities, emerging from clinical supply chain management. “CISOM provides a strategic road map to improve quality and safety through the integration of supply chain and clinical data in healthcare organizations,� says Mr. Hal Wolf. The CISOM evaluation and scoring offers a clear understanding of the clinical integration of supply chain infrastructure maturity that provides a path with evidence of outcomes to inform leadership decisions that advance quality and safety and inform investment decisions. The evaluation will be publicly available and will offer organizations a Baseline Score by which they can determine their next best steps toward Stage 7.
