FOOTBALL IN UAE AFC ASIAN CUP & FIFA CLUB WORLD CUP
FALLING FOR FO Football. You can’t escape it. The ‘beautiful game’ (as the legendary Brazilian, Pele, once described it) is everywhere you turn, down every street, in every house, lurking in every shop. And for good reason: football is the one thing that unites us all regardless of our age, race, religion or gender. Football is everywhere with “Who do you support?” having replaced “Hello, how are you?” as the standard form of introduction, in polite society. Football is the new main topic of conversation and being a football fan can give you a sense of belonging to a community. There is live football almost every day on satellite TV, along with dozens of shows devoted to highlights – and football chat on all the terrestrial channels.
Supermarkets and convenience stores stock a dozen or so football magazines, and most clubs have one or more fanzines produced by the fans. Newspapers have expanded their football coverage in response to increased interest. The broadsheets regularly run football news and features in the front of the paper, while the sports pages carry more match reports and personality profiles. If – like the Best in Travel team – you’re football crazy, you’re football mad, then this issue is for you! It features a guide to the 2018 FIFA Club World Cup and 2019 Asian Cup – both of which are being staged in the UAE.

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE AFC ASIAN CUP HERE’ S A LOWDOWN ON THE AFC ASIAN CUP THAT IS TAKING PLACE IN THE UAE IN EARLY 2019
What is the AFC Asian Cup? The Asian Cup is the quadrennial continental competition for national teams in Asia, and 2019 will be the 17th edition of the tournament, which was first held in 1956. Japan are the most successful team in the history of the Asian Cup, with four titles, while Saudi Arabia and Iran have won it three times each. Reigning champions Australia have been a part of the Asian Cup since 2007. This is the first time that the field will comprise 24 teams. The six groups of four teams each will see the top two from each group join the four best third-placed sides in the round of 16, similar to the format of the last European Championships in France in 2016. Where, and when, is it? The 2019 Asian Cup will take place in the UAE from 5 January to 1 February 2019 – only the second time the Emirates has played host. The country last staged the tournament in 1996, when the national team were defeated in the final on penalties by Gulf rivals Saudi Arabia. That remains the UAE’s best Asian Cup performance to date.
Where will the matches take place? 51 matches will be staged in eight venues, across three emirates. In Abu Dhabi, matches will be played at Zayed Sports City Stadium, Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium and Al Nahyan Stadium, while Al Ain’s Hazza bin Zayed Stadium and Khalifa bin Zayed Stadium will also host games. Elsewhere in Dubai, Al Maktoum Stadium and the Maktoum bin Rashid Stadium have both been selected, as has Sharjah Stadium in the emirate of Sharjah. The majority of the venues have undergone extensive refurbishment ahead of the Asian Cup. Zayed Sports City will stage the opening match and the final.
UNITED ARAB EMIRATES
Who’s playing? For the first time, the Asian Cup will feature 24 teams, having been expanded from the 16-team format employed between 2004 and 2015. Teams will be divided into six groups of four, with the top two sides and the four best third-placed sides progressing to the knockout stages. As hosts, the UAE qualified automatically, while the other 23 teams were determined by a qualification process that ran from March 2015 to March 2018. The qualified teams are as follows:
Iran, Kyrgyz Republic, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan China, Japan, India, DPR Korea, Korea Republic, Australia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Yemen, United Arab Emirates (UAE) How do I get tickets? Meet the emirates Abu Dhabi Don’t confuse Abu Dhabi with its showy sibling up the Sheikh Zayed Road. For while the oil rich capital of the UAE may boast many of the same draws as Dubai (read 365 days of sunshine, a sparkling sea, sand whiter than a dentist’s chair plus hip hotels, top notch dining, chic bars and modern shopping malls crammed with delights), crucially the capital also wants to be regarded as an international cultural hub. Case in point? Seek out World Travel Awards’ nominee Saadiyat Island – a mere 500m off Abu Dhabi’s east coast and half the size of Bermuda – that’s become a tourism-cultural project for nature and Emirati heritage and culture. Saadiyat Island is set to house the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi contemporary arts museum. Designed by acclaimed architect Frank Gehry at a cost of between US$200m and US$400m, this is the world’s largest Guggenheim and the only one in the Arab world. Other meaningful coups include the first ever branch of the world famous Parisian art museum, The Louvre (designed by award winning French architect Jean Nouvel) and a Sheikh Zayed National Museum – designed by Norman Foster and devoted to Abu Dhabi’s history and heritage, as well as the legacy of the much revered late ruler of the UAE after whom the museum is named. There’s also a Maritime Museum by Japan’s Tadao Ando on the way, which will reflect the rich
maritime history of the Gulf, and a Performing Arts Centre designed by Zaha Hadid. The Iraqi-British architect became the first woman to win the Pritzker Prize – aka architecture’s equivalent of the Nobel Prize – back in 2004. The emirate also boasts the most expensive hotel ever built – the Emirates Palace where there are over 1,000 staff for 300 odd rooms. Factor in the now annual Formula 1 race – the 5.55-kilometre Yas Marina Circuit hosted the UAE’s inaugural Grand Prix back in 2009 – and there’s no doubting that this former fishing village is a city that is certainly going places. By contrast Abu Dhabi's second city, Al Ain, is a sleepy place where very little happens although it’s worth visiting in the height of the scorching UAE summer, as the elevation of the land makes Al Ain a good few degrees cooler than Abu Dhabi. Further afield, look to Liwa – the famed fertile crescent of the UAE and the gateway to the Empty Quarter which should be on everyones list of places to experience in the UAE. Visitors head here for the grand silence that echoes off the Empty Quarter and the beauty of the vast dunes that roll into the distance. visitabudhabi.ae/uken/default.aspx

Add to these outlandish projects, five star hotels with private white sand beaches, a vibrant nightlife scene, some truly outstanding restaurants and guaranteed sunshine – and Dubai’s allure is obvious. Yet scratch beneath the shiny surface and you’ll find another side to the ‘city of gold’. Alongside the iconic skyscrapers, sit historical sites such as Bastakia and the creek – arguably the heart beat of Dubai. Here you can watch abras and dhows (traditional Arab sailing boats) weave their way across the water, as they have done for centuries. For further local flavour, factor in a tour of Jumeirah Mosque (Dubai is after all an Islamic state even if it isn’t quite how you’d envisage Arabia) on Beach Road, before sauntering through the bustling souks. These traditional market places are alive with vibrant stalls selling everything from art and jewellery to pashminas (a necessity given the artic air conditioning levels that you’ll find in Dubai’s myriad malls), batteries, bananas, spices and other seasonings. All are sold out of large open sacks, making for sensory overload.
Dubai. If you weren’t aware of the ambitious emirate in the UAE, you must have been living under a rock for the past couple of decades. The former fishing village has become one of the most talked about town’s in the world thanks to the dream, drive and determination of its charismatic ruler: step forward Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Make no mistake: the desert kingdom is home to the Burj Khalifa (the world’s tallest building at 828m), the world’s largest shopping mall – the Dubai Malll - plus Palm shaped man-made islands and an indoor ski slope complete with 6,000 tonnes of real snow.
For more glimpses of the ‘real Dubai’, explore ethnic residential districts such as Satwa and colourful Karama where you’ll get to mingle with the melting pot of cultures – there’s an incredible influx of expats from all over the world – that make up modern day Dubai. All of the aforementioned areas can be easily reached by the Dubai metro – the world’s longest self driving metro system that has helped ease road congestion since its inauguration in 2009.

Fujairah Dubai invariably tops the itineraries of most visitors to the UAE. Some adventurous souls make it to Abu Dhabi and, increasingly, Ras Al Khaimah. However if anywhere really demands a couple of days of your time, it’s Fujairah. The youngest emirate – it gained independence from Sharjah in 1952 – Fujairah is separated from its neighbours by the towering Hajar mountains and is the only emirate to be located entirely on the east coast. Consequently it’s become known as the beach emirate, offering the best best snorkelling and scuba-diving in the region. You can take advantage of the many different diving courses on offer, where skilled instructors are on hand to guide you every step of the way.If you prefer to enjoy long, lazy days soaking up the sun, there are plenty of umbrellas and sun loungers lining the golden sands. Away from the beaches, Fujairah is just a stone’s throw from the mineral rich Ain al-Madhab Hot Springs.
Furthermore, Fujairah is home to two stand-out mosques. The first, the Al-Bidyah Mosque, is the oldest in the United Arab Emirates. Made from a simple mudand-brick construction, the mosque is home to artefacts dating back to around 1000BC. Dwarfing it in size is Fujairah’s more modern mosque, the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, which covers an area equal in size to three football pitches. A major landmark on the outskirts of the city, it has room for over 30,000 worshippers. NonMuslims may not enter the building, but the grand, white exterior and sumptuous grounds are well worth a visit. To learn more about the archaeological finds unearthed in the area, head to the Fujairah Museum. Highlights in the exhibits include a stunning bowl made from an ostrich egg, Bronze Age weapons and painted pottery – all discovered locally. www.fujairahtourism.ae

Meet the emirates Sharjah Stretching from the Arabian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, Sharjah is the third largest of the seven Emirates which form the United Arab Emirates – and was once the most important of the seven sheikhdoms owing to its importance as a trading hub. Rich in history and culture; a land with a wealth of values, warm and friendly people, all year-round sunshine and distinctive blend of glorious past and bright present, the emirate is an attractive and safe destination offering the right ingredients for leisure and business alike – in spite of being home to the strictest laws in the UAE (it’s the only dry emirate). Having been crowned the "Cultural Capital of the Arab World" in 1998, the Islamic Culture Capital for 2014 and the Arab Tourism Capital for 2015, Sharjah’s commitment to the arts isn’t in doubt. With landmarks such as the Heritage Area which includes the Islamic Museum, Bait Al Naboodah, Souk Al Asra and Qanat Al Qasba, the emirate has preserved its history and traditions making it an ideal destination for tourists who are looking to learn a thing or two about the UAE.

Ajman At a grand total of 250 square kilometre (95 sq miles), Ajman is the smallest of the emirates and this is emirate’s greatest appeal. Its beautiful16km stretch of shoreline is best enjoyed with a stroll along the corniche, and its sandy beaches are heavenly for those who want to lie out under the sun or take a dip in the warm Gulf waters. Indeed, the Gulf and the coastline are important here and Ajman is renowned as one of the largest dhow building centres in the region. While mainly modern boats emerge from the yards these days, you may catch sight of a traditionally built wooden boat sailing out of the harbour. Further inland, the remote enclaves of Manama and Masfout enjoy the stunning backdrop of the Hajar Mountains, and provide an escape from the city and the summer heat.
Ajman Museum, housed in an 18th century fort, delivers a slice of culture and history while Al Tallah Camel Racecourse, Ajman Arabian Horse Stud Farm and Ajman Equestrian Club offer a chance to witness ageless Arabian pastimes. For more modern distractions, Ajman boasts a variety of activities, shops, luxury spas and wonderful restaurants and hotels. A melting pot of old and new, Ajman is a laid-back, sun drenched destination with a world of adventure, wildlife and tradition to explore.

5 THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN THE UA For a country that was only formed in 1971, the UAE (or United Arab Emirates to give it its full name) hasn’t half hogged the headlines with its overwhelming ambition and single minded pursuit of superlatives: the seven star hotel, the man made islands, the world’s tallest tower…. Throw into the mix the three s’s – that’s sun, sea and shopping – and the fact that this dazzling desert kingdom is a none too arduous seven hour flight from the UK, and it’s easy to see why tourists are flocking to the UAE in their droves.
It hardly needs to be said that Dubai – a favourite with footballers and their wives – entertains the most tourists thanks to its sky scrap-ers, mega malls and world class restaurants, but away from the bling there are six other emirates that also have plenty to offer. The country’s capital, Abu Dhabi, is only a short two hour drive south of Dubai. Closer still is Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain – two emirates offering a more traditional Arabian experience.
Tucked away at the northern tip of the UAE lies Ras Al Khaimah where adventures seekers can scale the Hajar Mountains, while to the east is the emirate of Fujairah: here you’ll find superb snorkelling and diving. Here Best in Travel lets you in on five fabulous things to see and do in the host nation of the 2018 FIFA Club World Cup and 2019 AFC Asian Cup.

5 THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN THE UAE Qasr al Hosn Abu Dhabi’s symbolic birthplace, Qasr al Hosn is the emirate’s first permanent structure, which was home to the emirate’s ruling Al Nahyan family. A permanent, free-to-enter exhibition at the Qasr al Hosn Centre tells the story of Abu Dhabi and its people through the city’s oldest building. Fascinating oral testimonies and historic photographs bring this important monument to life. Contemporary Emirati voices reflect on Abu Dhabi’s history and transformation and Qasr al Hosn’s key role as a vibrant symbol of Emirati heritage, culture and tradition. Qasr al Hosn began life in the 1760s as a coral and sea stone watchtower, with a commanding position overlooking the sea, later transformed into an impenetrable fort. Due to the shells’ reflective effect, the fort’s walls would sparkle in the sun offering a welcome coastal navigational tool for the region’s merchants. Mangrove was chosen to make the flooring and roof structure due to its natural strength and durability. During the exploration and discovery of oil between 1939 and the 1950s, Qasr al Hosn went through a period of expansion and an iconic palace enclosed the initial fort. The Father of the Nation, the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, ordered a large scale renovation of Qasr al Hosn, transforming it from ruler’s residence into a museum and repository of collections relating to Abu Dhabi and the Gulf.

Reasons why we ❤ the Uae The buzz A favourite local saying in the UAE is: “Miss a week and you’ll miss something major” and certainly it’s true that in their desire to take their place on the world stage, change is the only constant in the seven emirates. Dubai, in particular, reinvents itself more times than Madonna and is currently constructing the Dubai Creek Tower which will become the highest in the land, standing at 928m upon completion in 2020. The dazzling desert kingdom of Dubai is also gearing up to welcome the world’s largest Ferris wheel. Situated on Bluewaters Island (bluewatersduabi.ae), the Ferris wheel will boast 48 air-conditioned capsules when it opens at the end of 2018. Not that anyone should be surprised by by the scale of Dubai’s ambitions…. In the words of the emirate’s charismatic ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, himself: “Becoming number one is not impossible – the word impossible doesn’t exist in our dictionary.”
24/7 sunshine As recently as two decades ago few outside of the Middle East had heard of, yet alone been to, the UAE. Now the Arab state is a permanent fixture on the winter sun scene thanks to its promise of guaranteed rays. Make no mistake: it only rains in the winter months, mostly between December to February. The rest of the year, you can expect fabulous blue skies and sunshine.

The UAE is a melting pot The UAE’s residents are a diverse bunch. Make no mistake: visiting or living in the Gulf means you get to mingle with a melting pot of cultures that make up modern day UAE. The country is home to over 200 nationalities so expect to socialise with Indians, Brits, Chinese, Americans, Iranians, Canadians, Japanese, Australians, Pakistanis, French, Filipinos, Germans, Bangladeshis, Russians, South Africans, Malaysians, Nepalese and Italians to name but a few nationalities. On any given day, you’ll be able to learn a lile about their cultures. Very few places on the planet open its arms to so many.

Reasons why we ❤ the Uae Traditional culture People, perhaps understandably given the emirate’s penchant for publicising its outlandish projects, have the wrong idea about the UAE – believing the county to be all about malls and modernity. However scratch beneath the shiny surface and you’ll find another side to the seven emirates. Alongside skyscrapers like the Burj Al Arab (the self proclaimed seven star hotel, shaped like the sail of a dhow), sit historical sites such as Bastakia and the Dubai creek where you can watch abras and dhows (traditional Arab sailing boats) weave their way across the water, as they have done for centuries. Visitors will also enjoy sauntering through the UAE’s souks (traditional Arab market places) browsing and bartering for everything from curly Aladdin-esque slippers and jewellery to pashminas, baeries, bananas, spices and Indian sweets. All are sold out of large open sacks, making for sensory overload.
The lifestyle The living in the UAE is positively easy. Friendly petrol pump aendants fill up up your car (with dirt cheap gasoline), while supermarket assistants bag your shopping with a smile and a cab home at the end of an evening out doesn’t require you to remortgage your house. Hungry? Panic not: the cafe/restaurant/shop you live next door to will happily deliver your order – even if it’s only a bar of chocolate – to the communal rooop pool in your apartment block where you can spend weekends toasting on a sun lounger…
UNITED ARAB EMIRATES
The desert Bored of lying on a beach? Camel riding – which offers a unique opportunity to spend your holiday in the UAE doing something different from lazing by your hotel pool, frying yourself in the sun or schlepping around the shopping centres – is where it’s at.
Every tour operator under the sun includes a camel ride as part of their half day desert safari tour and thankfully, if your riding experience is restricted to rocking-horses from your childhood days, no experience is necessary. As experiences go, riding a camel out in the true heart of Arabia should top any Middle East itinerary list.
It’s safe The UAE has been ranked number one country in the world with the least amount of crimes related to sexual assault and the, as well as the number one country in the world with the lowest number of fire incidents, with 19 fires per every 100,000 people in 2017. All of which means that regardless of whether you’re in the UAE for a week, a month or infinitely longer, you can feel safe and secure.

Reasons why we ❤ the Uae Ski in the desert One of Dubai’s wonders, Ski Dubai is situated slap bang in the middle of the air conditioned cathedral to consumerism that is the Mall of the Emirates. Whether you’re a skier or a boarder, a visit to Ski Dubai should feature on any tourist itinerary – aer all how oen do you get to ski in the desert? The emirate’s first ski resort (yes, there are more in the pipeline), comes complete with 6,000 tonnes of real snow that falls over night at around minus 10 degrees Celsius. So when you’ve had enough of sun baking by the hotel pool, slalom down the slopes instead: there’s a gentle slope for beginners and the world’s first black indoor run for the pros amongst you. All equipment (think ski boots, thermal jackets and disposable socks) is included in the price – all you need to do is bring gloves. Ski you there?
Shop like a Sheikh If shopping was an Olympic event, the UAE would virtually be guaranteed a gold medal: there’s a whole host of super sized shiny malls dedicated to the joys of consumerism from Dubai Mall (said to be the largest in the world) to the elegant, Egyptian themed Wafi City Mall, Venetian themed Mercato Mall and massive Marina Mall in Abu Dhabi. While these gliering mega malls pull in the punters at any time of year, they’re particularly aractive during the summer months owing to the annual extravaganza that is Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS). This shopping festival has done wonders to lure in tourists in what was traditionally a lean time. During DSS, shoppers can expect discounts galore in every outlet, plus a myriad of entertainment options including live music, dance performances and other fun filled activities. Presiding over all the action is the popular yellow mascot, Modesh – which means ‘amazing’ in Arabic. Even if shopping doesn’t interest you, it’s worth visiting one of the super sized malls for the atmosphere alone – this is where the Arabs hang out to hide from the heat and congestion.

Life’s a beach In search of the perfect sandy getaway? The UAE doesn’t disappoint. The majority of hotels on the coast boast their own private beach. However if you’re staying in downtown Dubai or Abu Dhabi, you can still pay to access a beach club for the day. The price usually includes access to the beach and pool, plus a lavish lunch.
Alternatively for just a few dirhams, you can dip at public beach parks - say hello to Saadiyat Public Beach and Corniche beach in Abu Dhabi and Jumeirah Beach Park in Dubai. But if you want a slice of pearl white sand to yourself, head for Al Mamzar – the park that most of Dubai forgets owing to its location on the outskirts of Dubai. This hidden gem is much quieter than its Jumeirah sibling, making it a decent spot to lay your towel for those tired of being surrounded by tonnes of fellow tourists. Bored of baking in the sun? Amble around the amphitheatre or simply stroll along the paths that wind between grassy spaces, prey picnic areas and a children’s playground.

The fanatic “Football quite clearly isn't only a game." So said Paul Ashworth – the protagonist in Nick Hornby’s hit novel, Fever Pitch, and prototype of the die hard fan. Still it's beer to be seared next to the bluffer than the pundit – aka the football supporter who seems to be suffering under the illusion that he's the manager, shouting our instructions to “track back”, “stay with him” and “shoooooot.”

The plastics The worst insult you can snarl at your opposition’s fans? That they’re plastics, aka fake fans. As a rule of thumb, plastic fans are wealthy supporters whose devotion to their team is not determined by geography or family ties, but by how much silverware they have won. Plastics prefer to watch their team (typically Chelsea and the two Manchesters) on telly, in the comfort of their living room. On the rare occasion they venture to Old Trafford et al to watch their team play live, you'll be able to spot them by their silence – plastics aren’t au fait with all the club chants and songs.

The hooligan
The corporate executive invariably views aending football matches as too much trouble. For them, the thought of siing still in a stadium for 90 minutes in the freezing cold, isn't an aractive proposition. These guys are exactly who the stadium builders had in mind when they built executive boxes – affording those with cash to splash, the opportunity to watch the onfield action in comfort and style. When you’re warm and dry and being plied with food and booze, football become a far more beautiful game….
Ninety nine per cent of football fans are most definitely not hooligans. Unfortunately a few still prevail and can be found terrorising the terraces, looking for trouble. Check out films such as The Football Factory (2004) and Green Street Hooligans (2005) for an insight into ugly personification of the supposedly beautiful game. DUBAI MUSEUM Dubai Fort is situated at the south of Dubai Creek, at the Al Souk Al Kabir area which teems with vigorous trade and is close to the Ruler's Court (the monarch's divan). It was built back in 1787, about 200 years ago, as the premises of the monarch and a fort of defence, since it sat on the border of the urban Dubai at the time. Later on, this fort turned into an arsenal for artillery and weapons. It was also used as a prison for the outlaws. This fort was renovated during the reign of the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum. It was opened in 1971 (the year the federation
was formed), to be an oďŹƒcial museum that displays the history of Dubai and its original heritage. In 1995, another underground museum was established and added to the old fort. www.dubaiculture.gov.ae/en/Live-OurHeritage/Pages/Dubai-Museum-and-Al-FahidiFort.aspx

A LOW-DOWN ON THE VENUES AT THE 2018 FIFA CLUB WORLD CUP
HOST COUNTRY: UAE The United Arab Emirates are a group of seven small states situated on the southeast tip of the Arabian Peninsula. Flanked to the north by the Arabian Gulf, the country borders Qatar to the west, Saudi Arabia to the south and Oman to the east, with Iran lying just across the Gulf. The Federation of the United Arab Emirates was founded in 1971 following the union of six emirates: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ajman, Umm alQuwain, Fujairah and Sharjah, with Ras al-Khaimah joining a year later. Abu Dhabi is by far the largest of the seven, occupying more than 80 per cent of the country’s total surface area of 83,600 square kilometres. The UAE is home to over nine million people, a figure that is growing all the time. The respective populations of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, the two host cities of the FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2018, are 2,784,000 and 650,000.
The growth in the country’s oil industry has aracted a large number of expatriates, so many, in fact, that Emiratis account for only 11 per cent of the population, Iranians and other Arabs nine per cent, and south Asians 62 per cent. The vast majority of the country’s inhabitants are Muslim (96 per cent), and though Arabic is the official language, English, Hindi and Urdu are also very widely spoken. Though most of the country is covered in desert, it is rich in oil reserves, which have been exploited since the 1960s, mainly in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah. The climate is very stable throughout the year. Summers are hot, with temperatures ranging between 35 and 45 ºC and humidity between 60 and 100 per cent, while winters are warm (15 to 25 ºc) but dry.

The UAE has hosted three other FIFA tournaments besides: the U-20 World Cup in 2003, the Beach Soccer World Cup in 2009, and the U-17 World Cup four years later. And though the traditions of horse and camel racing stretch back more than 2,000 years in the region, football is now the country’s most popular sport. As well as hosting the Arabian Gulf Cup in 1982, 1994 and 2007, the UAE also provided the venue for the 1996 AFC Asian Cup, staging each tournament with its customary efficiency. The country will host the next Asian Cup in 2019.
Though the UAE national team has been in existence for less than half a century, it has achieved some notable results over the years, winning the Arabian Gulf Cup in front of its own fans in 2007 – beating Oman in the final – and liing the trophy again in 2013, this time aer defeating Iraq. Runners-up on three occasions in the Gulf Cup, the Emiratis also took second place in the 1996 Asian Cup and third in the 2015 continental finals. The UAE’s biggest achievement to date, however, was qualifying for the 1990 FIFA World Cup Italy™, their only world finals appearance to date. As for the country’s national youth teams, the U-20 side has reached three world finals in its age group, advancing to the last 16 at Malaysia 1997 and the quarter-finals at UAE 2003 and Egypt 2009. The UAE’s U-17s have also graced the world stage three times, failing to progress beyond the group phase at Italy 1991 and UAE 2013, but reaching the Round of 16 at Nigeria 2009.

HOST CITY: AL AIN Situated 160km east of the capital Abu Dhabi in the lee of the Omani mountains, the city of Al Ain (which means ‘Oasis’ in Arabic) takes its name from the profusion of watering holes and springs surrounding it. These reserves of underground water create and maintain the fertile soil for which the city is famous and stretch for over 100 square kilometres, making Al Ain one of the most verdant spots in the United Arab Emirates. The oases, gardens and tree-lined streets have earned Al Ain the nickname of ‘the Garden City of the Gulf’. With over 71 parks scaered throughout its neighbourhoods, as well as the arable land and palm plantations beyond, the city relies on its famous underground irrigation system of interconnected wells to keep it looking green.
This regional capital provides vital services to a vast area of the country, extending right to the Oman border. In recent years, local industries have come on leaps and bounds, while the presence of the University of the United Arab Emirates, the country’s leading university, make Al Ain an important centre of culture and learning. Boasting many areas of outstanding natural beauty, such as the 1,240m-high Mount Hafeet and its many natural springs, Al Ain’s tourist industry continues to thrive. Home to Al Ain, the biggest club in the
region, the stadium boasts excellent transport links. Lying close to the motorway that links the city with Abu Dhabi and Dubai, it is a mere 15-minute drive from Al Ain Airport. Comprising of 3,000 premiumcategory seats, the Hazza Bin Zayed is a superbly equipped stadium and an unmistakable landmark when night falls in Al Ain, thanks to the LED lights that top its roof and create strikingly colourful paerns.
FOOTBALL But Al Ain is more than just a prey place. This calm oasis has lent its name to one of the UAE’s most important football clubs. In 2003, Al Ain became the first Emirati side to win the AFC Champions League, reaching the final of the same competition two years later in 2005. Their domestic record is no less impressive, with a national record 13 league titles, the last of them coming in the 2017/18 season.
Despite its relatively small size, this passionate city boasts three football arenas: Tahnoun Bin Mohamed Stadium; Sheikh Khalifa International Stadium, one of the venues for the FIFA U-20 World Cup UAE 2003 and Hazza bin Zayed Stadium, the city’s largest stadium, which hosted the FIFA Club World Cup in 2017.
