AUDEMARS PIGUET PRESENTS
CIRCADIAN RHYTHM BY CHENG RAN AT ART BASEL IN HONG KONG Audemars Piguet presented a work by Chinese artist Cheng Ran on their stand in the Collectors Lounge at Art Basel Hong Kong. The work, entitled Circadian Rhythm, is part of a series of collaborations with artists giving expression to Audemars Piguet’s cultural and geographic origins. It represents the artist’s interpretation of the Manufacture’s home in the Swiss Jura Mountains, reflecting the watchmaker’s sense of deep-rooted history, its connections with nature and commitment to creativity, innovation and independence. Combining Audemars Piguet’s origins with his own visual world, Cheng Ran has created a video installation set in the Vallée de Joux which transports the viewer on a journey between landscape and soundscape, flowing seamlessly through water, mossy forests and inside the micro universe of watches. As the film unfolds, a subtle soundtrack of natural sounds intertwined with the mechanical ticks emanating from the heart of complicated watches blends with the sights of the picturesque forest and streams captured in the vicinity of Audemars Piguet’s home.

The captivating sequence propels the viewer deep inside Cheng Ran’s universe, whilst also conveying the unique atmosphere of the natural seing that has, over generations, nurtured the Manufacture’s pioneering spirit. Born in inner Mongolia in 1981, Cheng Ran is one of the most noteworthy members of a younger generation of Chinese artists. He is known for pushing the boundaries of video art through installations that borrow heavily from both Chinese and Western culture and history. Visual representations of time and space frequently replace narratives in his projects. In 2016 he was invited on a three-month residency at The New Museum in New York, in partnership with the K11 Art Foundation just before Audemars Piguet partnered with Cheng Ran in October 2016 when presenting his work at the Yuz Museum, Shanghai, in conjunction with the Audemars Piguet watch history exhibition To Break the Rules, You Must First Master Them

What is a Spiral Cellar? A Spiral Cellar is an an entirely natural underground cellar, capable of holding up to 1900 boles of wine in full cellaring conditions. It can be installed under any ground floor room and doesn’t require an existing cellar or basement. Built from engineered concrete, a Spiral Cellar can either be fied cleanly into a finished room, or form part of a new house build, extension or refurbishment project. Installation usually takes no more than between three and nine days and as it creates surprisingly lile mess, there’s no need to move out. Our cellars are not classed as ‘habitable’, so in most instances, or unless your house is a listed building, you will not need planning permission to have one installed. How does it work? We know the right conditions are vital when it comes to wine storage. All of our Spiral Cellars have a natural passive ventilation system, which, simply put, means that warm air is continuously replaced by cool air. The excellent thermal properties of the cellar’s concrete shell, enables it to absorb the natural ground temperature just like in a traditional cellar and the natural insulation of the earth helps keep vibrations to an absolute minimum. These things, together with citing the cellar in the correct position within your home, create the right temperature and humidity for optimum cellaring conditions. How is it built? To create your Spiral Cellar, we start by forming a hole in the desired location. If you opt for the excavation and installation option, our expert team will do this for you, carefully liing your existing floor finish and leaving no mess. If you opt for our installation-only option, your builder will handle the excavation and we then complete the installation by fiing the cellar itself and your chosen lighting and door options. A Spiral Cellar won’t affect your foundations and doesn’t require any of its own as it’s surrounded by reinforced concrete and wrapped in a unique waterproof liner system. The Benefits A Spiral Cellar is the perfect way to cellar a sizeable collection of up to 1900 boles and have it close to hand, without having to create the space for refrigeration or invest in inconvenient bonded warehouse space. The storage conditions are tip top giving you the confidence to take advantage of buying wine young or en primeur and aging it yourself. A Spiral Cellar makes storing and cataloguing vertical tastings and phased openings easier and, as it gives you the space to see your whole collection at once, there’s less chance of forgeing what you have in your collection. GOYAR From the houses oF martin and morel to the house oF goyard: a legacy oF excellence
Pierre-François Martin founded the House of Martin in 1792. It specialized in box-making, trunkmaking and packing, at a time when the golden age of the great trunk-makers of the late XIXth century was yet to come. Martin’s trade had more to do with the delicate art of garment folding and packing than with that of container making, as evidenced by his ad campaign, which stressed that "Maison Martin sells an assortment of boxes and cases; it provides quality packing services for fragile furniture and objects, as well as hats, gowns and flowers; it uses oiled canvas, plain canvas and straw for packing; manufacturer of horse carriage trunks and coat racks, it also supplies oilcloth and waterproof canvas, all at a fair price." The house of Martin quickly became a favourite with the French aristocracy, and was eventually granted the prestigious tile of official purveyor of HRH Marie-Caroline de Bourbon-Siciles, Duchess of Berry. In 1834, the House of Martin moved its store from 4, rue Neuve des Capucines to 347, rue Saint-Honoré. Even though the postal address changed to 233, rue Saint-Honoré in 1856 on account of a new street numbering system, its location has remained the same ever since.

Pierre François Martin was the guardian of a young female ward, Pauline. He arranged her marriage to one of his employees, LouisHenri Morel, and gave his business as her dowry. Morel followed in Martin’s footsteps, and introduced himself as the « Successor to former Maison Morel, located on rue Neuvedes-Capucines, near Place Vendôme ». In 1845, Morel hired François Goyard as an apprentice. The 17year old boy received training under the guidance of both Martin and Morel. When Morel died suddenly in 1852, François took over, and remained for 32 years at the helm of a house he took to a whole new level. He finally handed over the reins to his son Edmond in 1885.
