TIMEPIECES OF Glashüe Original

>>

With its automatic Calibre 37, developed entirely in its own manufactory, Glashüe Original has once again set new standards. Owners are enthusiastic about these features, whether in the Senator Chronograph Panorama Date or the Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date: the column wheel chronograph with central stopsecond, 30-minute and 12-hour counters and, as a crowning feature, a flyback mechanism. The small seconds, the display for the impressive 70 hour power reserve and Glashüe Original’s signature Panorama Date enhance the pleasure owners find in these superb timepieces. www.glashuee-original.com

Patek Philippe For decades, split-seconds chronographs that allow lap times to be measured without interrupting an ongoing event time measurement have ranked among the most coveted Patek Philippe specialties. That was already the case in the 1920s, when the manufacture not only presented its first wristwatch chronometer but added the rarapante function right from the start. Thus, collectors, aficionados, and enthusiasts of artisanally craed timekeeping instruments are eager to welcome the new Ref. 5370 split-seconds chronograph. Not least because its elaborate inner life ticks beneath a genuine black enamel dial. www.patek.com

LUXURY WATCHES & JEWELLERY

MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM COLLECTION William Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ is a powerful evocation of an enchanted world. Beneath the branches of a magical forest, four separate romantic plots intertwine and eventually - resolve themselves into happy endings.

It incorporates elements which have always featured prominently in the spirit of the Maison, like the fairy. Slender and sensual, these small enchanted beings are depicted in graceful poses with wings of extreme delicacy. For Van Cleef & Arpels, they embody femininity.

A celebration of love and nature, the play has defined our vision of fairyland ever since its first performance. Now, Van Cleef & Arpels presents its own interpretation of Shakespeare’s masterpiece.

Nature is another of the Maison’s favorite themes. Jewels inspired by nature are always in perpetual motion: plants blown delicately by the wind or birds mid-flight. Van Cleef & Arpels’ creations put us face to face with nature in all her fragility. www.vancleefarpels.com

VAN CLEEF & ARPELS

LADY ARPELS FÉERIE ROUGE TIMEPIECE Fairies have always been a source of fascination for Van Cleef & Arpels and are the main representations of femininity to be found among the Maison’s creations. Six years aer launching the Fairy Poetic Complication™ timepiece, Van Cleef & Arpels celebrates once again the poetry of fairies with the Lady Arpels Féerie Rouge timepiece. It is a new, elegant interpretation of the Féerie story. The ruby red color of the dial invites us into a new world of enchantment. A fairy indicates the passing hours with her magic wand and the minutes with her fluering wings, perpetuating the tradition of legends and fairies dear to the Maison. The art of “guillochage” is one of the traditional cras of watchmaking. Dating from the 16th century, it consists in engraving a dial with a paern of intersecting lines to provide vitality and depth. The art of engraving consists in creating a given form from a block of material and giving it life. It all starts with a gold plate, on which the crasman traces the outline of the motif. The threedimensional work may then begin: cuing and polishing the metal, emphasizing the lines of a drawing or reproducing a texture.

This cra - which is carried out by hand - calls for traditional tools which are usually produced by the engraver himself, according to his needs. The quality of an engraver is measured not only by his technical prowess, but also by his ability to bring his material to life and instill his creations with all the poetry of the story he wishes to tell. The Lady Arpels Féerie Rouge features a swiss mechanical movement based on a JaegerLeCoultre 846 movement with a retrograde module developed exclusively for Van Cleef & Arpels. On displays known as “retrograde”, the hands and the wings trace an arc before returning instantly to their initial position in order to begin another journey. This constant dance enables the creation to be original and highly spectacular, requiring high-precision design and crasmanship. www.vancleefarpels.com

LUXURY WATCHES

Richard Mille RM 07-02 Automatic Pink Sapphire Richard Mille’s success is founded upon three crucial elements: the best in technical innovation, the best of artistry and architecture, the best of the heritage and culture of fine watchmaking with hand finishing. From the very inception of the brand, Richard Mille endeavored to apply the techniques and materials found in the most innovative sectors such as in the domains of F1 racing car development and the aerospace industry to watchmaking, with the goal of creating an extreme timepiece, without compromise, without gimmicks.

Case The bezel, caseband and case back of the RM 0702 are made from solid blocks of Pink Sapphire. Sapphire is known as a particularly scratchresistant material with a hardness of 1800 Vickers. Created from crystals of aluminum oxide (Al2O3), its transparency is a result of the purity of composition. Creating a case of this quality took over 40 days of machining, including 430 hours spent pre-forming the case components and 350 hours polishing the caseband/ bezel/case back ensemble. Gems rotor with variable geometry Heavy external outside edge and heavy edge ring in 5N red gold - Ceramic ball bearing This rotor with variable geometry enables winding to be adjusted to the owner’s activity level. Adjusting the two weights, which can be slid sideways into the correct position and fixed in place by spline screws, modifies the seing. Inertia of the movement is optimal when the two weights are closer to each other, and the barrel rewinds more quickly. If the weights are positioned at either end of the rotor, the inertia is considerably reduced, resulting in the barrel winding more slowly. Free sprung balance with variable inertia This type of balance wheel represents the ultimate in innovation. It guarantees greater reliability when subjected to shocks and also during movement assembly and disassembly, hence beer chronometric results over time. The regulator index is eliminated and a more accurate and repeatable adjustment is possible thanks to 4 small adjustable weights located directly on the balance. www.richardmille.com

Today Hermès has over a dozen divisions, including perfume, tableware, and jewelry, and has retail outlets in some of the most So, why Apple Watch Hermès? Apple says they partnered with Hermès because of parallel thinking, singular vision, and mutual regard. Aer launching with the 18K yellow gold and rose gold Apple Watch Edition back in April, it was evident Apple wasn't constraining the product to traditional technology models and methods.

What's different about the Apple Watch Hermès hardware? The Apple Watch casing itself is the stainless steel model, almost identical to the current Apple Watch collection. The only difference is Hermès branding on the back. What kind of bands are in the Hermès collection? The Apple Watch Hermès collection has three bands styles and several colors, but the details vary by size. Are there any soware differences? Special clock faces? Yes, but yes! The difference, like the Edition, is special clock faces designed by Apple based on Hermès branding. WATCHMAKERS A. Lange & Söhne

>>

When Ferdinand A. Lange arrived in Glashüe, the local economy had already long hit rock boom in 1845. The once rich ore deposits had been exploited and the town had been bled dry. Nowadays, Glashüe is the undisputed center of the German watchmaking industry and A. Lange & Söhne has even become the poster child for German watch manufacturers. There is not a single manufacturer in Glashüe who doesn’t refer to the founder of this proud watchmaking tradition, yet there is only one who is allowed to officially use his name. The company prides itself for manufacturing nothing less than the best watches in the world. An ambition which causes them to design each new model with increased functionality, especially in regards to legibility and handling, as well as further perfecting precision. Aer it has been assembled, the watches from Lange & Söhne receive the finishing touches and are then reassembled. This manufacturing process further underscores the company’s aspirations. The manufacturer was also able to launch a number of luxury watches in recent years that are already considered classics, such as the Lange 1, Saxonia and the Langematik. www.alange-soehne.com

Glashüe Original Aer the unrest of World War II, the watchmaking industry in Glashüe was consolidated into the VEB Glashüer Uhrenbetriebe (GUB). Glashüe Original emerged as the legal successor to the GUB, once Eastern and Western Germany unified in 1990. This manufacturer was able to set new standards in the industry with refinements e.g. the threequarter plate with stripe finish, the patented panoramic date display, and also gooseneck fine tuning. The manufacturer also has an obsession with specific technical features that run throughout the entire Glashüe Original collection e.g. the moon phase in the Panomatic series or the Grande Cosmopolite Tourbillon. Lovers of fine design can always find something to suit their taste in its vintage inspired timepieces, namely the Sixties and Seventies collections, as well as in the more ladylike series of the Pavonina and Lady Serenade. www.glashuee-original.com

OF GERMANY Sinn

>>

In the German center of finance, of the bull and bear market, the world of stock brokers and highflyers, the flight instructor and former rally participant Helmut Sinn founded his company in the city still affectionately referred to as ‘Mainhaan’ in the early 1960s. What began with the arrangement of onboard instruments in Bundeswehr aircras, rapidly turned into the invention of chronographs designed primarily for pilots. From the very beginning, Helmut Sinn Spezialuhren GmbH excelled with watches that were expected to fulfill the highest technical demands. For example the Sinn 142S proved the functionality of automatic winding wristwatches in a zero-gravity environment. The divers watch UX can even be found now firmly around the wrist of the elite German Federal Police, the GSG9. www.sinn.de

Montblanc

>>

In a globalized world of watches in which components don’t know national borders any more, we are next going to take a look at a hanseatic city, whose port has long been regarded as a gateway to the world. At the beginning of the 20th century a company seled in Hamburg, which initially made its mark with elegant fountain pens. Until today, Montblanc is headquartered on the Elbe, for the production of luxury timepieces however, they resort to the expertise of Swiss watchmakers in Villeret and Le Locle, where their collections such as the Star, Timewalker, Sports or Bohème model are manufactured. The Meisterstück models emulate the style of the famous pens as much as the reminiscence of the Princesse Grace de Monaco. However, the watch manufacturer cements its extraordinary reputation with the Series Villeret 1858 timepieces and the Nicolas Rieussec Monopusher Chronograph. www.montblanc.com

LUXURY PENS

MONTE THE ULTIMATE WRITING INSTRUMENT

Founded in 1912 as a “Manifaura pennini d’oro e penne stilografiche” (“Manufacturer of gold nibs and fountain pens”) Montegrappa has been manufacturing writing implements. Montegrappa – originally known as ELMO – benefied from a pool of local talents, a workforce able to produce finely craed objects, with style, with panache and with a drive to achieve excellence. Montegrappa’s factory is located on the bank of the River Brenta, the river winding through the town of Bassano del Grappa. Montegrappa’s geography and its Italian heritage are important elements of the company’s persona. ‘Italian-ness’ is at the heart of Montegrappa tradition. It defines the brand philosophy, its aitudes, its style. Almost immediately aer its birth, the Bassano factory found itself in a key position during the First World War. Its location was fortuitous, for Bassano was a key military position, and it would be marked by key bales toward the end of the

16

conflict. Among the many soldiers who used ELMO pens to write leers home were two celebrated American writers, then acting as war correspondents. Ernest Hemingway and John Dos Passos were both volunteer ambulance drivers at the front. The eloquent and evocative communiqués they sent from the front were recorded with the finely produced writing equipment manufactured in Bassano. Montegrappa has evolved from a writing instrument company with over a 100 years of heritage to a luxury lifestyle company. Living the Montegrappa Lifestyle has seen some of the most renowned icons give their endorsement to the brand. The Montegrappa Lifestyle is where old-meets-new, street-meets-boardroom, fashion-meets-function – the rules have changed to encourage a new freedom and crosspollination. Salvador Dalí stands side-by-side with Quincy Jones, Pelé kicks a ball to Ayrton Senna, the tradition harmonises with Hip-Hop.Through the ensuing decades, Montegrappa has produced

GRAPPA numerous models, now highly collectible. Montegrappa pens have played their part in history, for signing documents during key moments in the 20th Century. Boris Yeltsin gave his Dragon pen to Vladimir Putin on 2nd January 2000, and with this pen he symbolically handed over his power to him. Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev signs all official documents with the Montegrappa Extra 1930. Consolidating its position as the premier manufacturer of luxury pens, Montegrappa has produced a continuing flow of limited editions, commemorating events, locales and individuals.

Highly desirable pens such as the coveted Dragon have in turn aracted and inspired notable collectors. In 2010, France’s President, Nicolas Sarkozy, join the distinguished gathering of heads-of-state, popes, royalty, actors, musicians, artists, sportsmen, top models, writers and celebrities who have been proud owners of Montegrappa pens during its first century. To name a few, his fellow Montegrappa users include Vladimir Putin, Silvio Berlusconi, His Holiness John Paul II, His Majesty King Juan Carlos of Spain, His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei, Al Pacino, Zinedine Zidane, Naomi Campbell, Paulo Coelho and countless others.

ROLEX OYSTER PERPETUAL MILGAUSS

THE OYSTER PERPETUAL MILGAUSS, THE WATCH FOR THOSE WITH A PASSION FOR THE WORLDS OF SCIENCE AND DISCOVERY, RECONCILES STRONG MAGNETIC FIELDS AND CHRONOMETRIC PRECISION.

20

Instantly recognisable The reliability and precision of an ordinary mechanical watch can be affected by a magnetic field of 50 to 100 gauss. But many scientists are exposed to much higher magnetic fields during the course of their work. Rolex’s solution was the Milgauss, created in 1956, the first watch of its kind. Hence the name of the watch, mille being French for thousand. Rolex uses 904L stainless steel for its steel watch cases. 904L is mainly used in the high technology, aerospace and chemical industries, where maximum resistance to corrosion is essential. A superalloy, 904L is extremely resistant and highly polishable. It maintains its beauty even in the harshest environments.

Z-Blue dial Green sapphire crystal marked a first in watchmaking when it was introduced on the Milgauss in 2007. Now this crystal is combined with an electric blue dial, an allusion to the emblematic lightning-bolt-shaped seconds hand. The design, development and production of Rolex bracelets and clasps, as well as the stringent tests they face, involve advanced high technology. And, as with all the components of the watch, aesthetic controls by the human eye guarantee impeccable beauty. The Oyster bracelet is a perfect alchemy of form and function. First introduced in the late 1930s, this particularly robust and comfortable metal bracelet with its broad, flat three-piece links remains the most universal bracelet in the Oyster collection.

The Milgauss is equipped with calibre 3131, a selfwinding mechanical movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. It incorporates stateof-the-art technologies patented by the brand that ensure exceptional resistance to magnetic fields. Like all Rolex Perpetual movements, the 3131 is a certified Swiss chronometer, a designation reserved for high-precision watches that have successfully passed the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) tests. Its architecture, in common with all Oyster watch movements, makes it singularly reliable.

Chronometer. This exclusive designation aests that it has successfully undergone a series of specific final controls by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria, in addition to the official COSC certification of its movement. This unique testing of the chronometric precision of the cased-up movement, as well as of the watch’s waterproofness, self-winding and power reserve, pushes back the boundaries of performance and makes Rolex the benchmark for excellence in mechanical watches. The green seal is coupled with a five-year guarantee which applies to all Rolex models.

BREITLING EXOSPACE B55 CONNECTED IN THE FOREFRONT OF CONNECTED CHRONOGRAPHS, THE EXOSPACE B55 IS ASSERTING ITSELF AS A CONCENTRATED PACKAGE OF INNOVATION, FUNCTIONALITY AND PERFORMANCE.

The avant-garde Exospace B55 connected chronograph houses an exclusive SuperQuartz™ movement endowed with a range of original functions tailor-made for pilots. It stands out in terms of its new connection philosophy placing the smartphone in the service of the watch in order to enhance its functionality. The user thus enjoys the optimal comfort of the phone for performing certain adjustments and, conversely, can download the results of certain measurements to the smartphone as well as receive notifications. This future-oriented instrument is also distinguished by its resolutely technical design featuring a titanium case and rubber strap. The new-generation connected chronograph.

30

True to its tradition of “instruments for professionals”, Breitling designed this model as a “real” watch (with a multifunction movement, dial and hands, two months’ autonomy, a waterproof case, etc.) leveraging the user-friendliness of the smartphone to improve its ease of use and efficiency. This supremely masterful chronograph remains entirely operational offline. The Exospace B55 is asserting itself as a major technological breakthrough, entirely in line with the Breitling inventions that have made their mark on the history of watchmaking – such as the first independent chronograph pushpiece at 2 o’clock (1915), the Navitimer slide rule (1952) or the Emergency’s distress beacon (1995).

PARMIGIANI

BUGATTI

AEROLITHE

AUTOMATIC, CHRONOGRAPH & FLYBACK MOVEMENT It is not surprising that automakers and the designers of luxury timepieces like to collaborate with each other. Both professions deal with precision, high-performance machines, and both are constantly striving for new innovations in both technical achievement and style.

42

When automakers and watch designers work together, the results are usually spectacular and interesting. The watches produced by such collaborations are always masterful in their technical details and appealing in their appearance.

This Bugai line from Parmigiani Fleurier Watches has a striking look and a unique movement. These are the first watches in the world to have a transverse movement that works like the transmission of a car. Understandably proud of their creation, Bugai and Omega Watches have provided several see-through panels showing off every aspect of the movement.

These watches don't look like others. In the original Bugai design, shown in several of these selections, the body is an oval cylinder, most of which is filled by the see-through panels. The circular dial is at the side of the cylinder. Also shown are several of the Bugai Flyback Chronographs, the design for which is based on the Bugai Atalante 57S Sport from the 1930s. These have wide, porthole-style dials with see-through faces showing the handsome movement. Each of these luxury timepieces has a large chronograph dial in the space between the center and 3, while a small second hand appears beside 9. Notice that some of these Parmigiani Fleurier watches are set with white baguee diamonds. Here are watches that are perfect for the lovers of all kinds of high-performance machinery. This line from Bugai and Parmigiani Fleurier Watches is a technical and stylistic triumph. www.parmigiani.ch

LUXURY ZONE Some 30km from the main island of Mahé, Ile du Nord, or North Island, enjoys private isolation within the Inner Island group of the Seychelles. Luminous white beaches cosset a tropical interior of coconut palms and takamaka trees cradled between three granite outcrops, 110m to 180m in height, whose polished grey ramparts rise from the white sands and filigree reefs of the azure ocean. North Island is a sanctuary where natural habitats, long neglected, have been rehabilitated so that endangered Seychelles fauna and flora could be reintroduced and given a place to grow and thrive. On this floating paradise, 11 guest villas have been built from local materials reaped from the rehabilitation process, where luxury and simplicity mingle to form a signature architectural style we call ‘barefoot luxury’.

46

North Island is a place that unashamedly aims at providing the very best in privacy, location, accommodation, services, facilities and experience, yet has restored its environment to a place of verdant plenty – a Noah’s Ark afloat in warm tropical waters in colours of blue and aquamarine. The true essence of North Island is a rare encounter that is in harmony with the environment – one that touches and inspires the lives of all who walk her beaches, dive her waters and contemplate her beauty.
