THE EMIRATE OF

A one and a half hour drive from Abu Dhabi city, Al Ain is one of the world's oldest permanently inhabited selements, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city abounds in picturesque forts. One of the UAE’s most historic buildings, Al Jahili Fort was erected in 1891 to defend the city and protect precious palm groves and is home to a permanent exhibition of the work of British adventurer Sir Wilfred Thesiger and his 1940s crossings of the Rub Al Khali (The Empty Quarter) desert. The redeveloped Al Qaara Fort is now home to a brilliant arts centre and gallery, offering hundreds of modern exhibits.

4

Get to grips with our culture and heritage with a visit to the city’s museums. With three main sections archaeology, ethnography and gis, Al Ain National Museum lets you explore various aspects of UAE life, including Bedouin jewellery and traditional musical instrument collections. The former home of the late UAE founder, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Al Ain Palace Museum houses a large collection of material about the ruling family. Visitors can tour the private rooms and gardens once occupied by the ‘Father of the Nation’.

FOCUS ON THE EMIRATES

AL AIN For stunning views of the city, drive, take a cab or, if you have the stamina, cycle to the top of Jebel Hafeet – a rocky height dominating the city - via a winding highway. Rising 1,240 metres, this is the emirate’s highest peak, and UAE’s second. Other aractions include the Al Ain oasis with its cool, shady walkways and a 3,000-year-old falaj irrigation system, and the camel market-one of the last few remaining. This date palm oasis has been recognised by the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) for its importance as a repository of genetic resources, biodiversity and cultural heritage.

Families should head to Al Ain Zoo – home to over 4,000 animals, and enjoy giraffe feeding, camel riding and ‘Elezba’ peing zoo. There are plenty of green public spaces for picnics and also playgrounds, a cafeteria and a train tour of the wildlife area. For a fun day out, try the renovated Hili Fun-City, the Gulf's oldest theme park, which now offers one of the cheapest days out, with entry no more than AED 40 (US$ 11). Watersports lovers need to try Wadi Adventure, the region’s only man-made white water raing, kayaking and surf facility built in the foothills of the majestic Jebel Hafeet.

FOCUS ON THE EMIRATES

EXPLORE AL AIN Al Ain was once a vital oasis on the caravan route from the UAE to Oman. The history of the 'Oasis City,' the emirate's heritage heartland and one of the world's oldest permanently inhabited selements, can be explored through visits to the Al Ain forts (one of which has now been transformed into an arts centre), the Al Ain National Museum and a trip to the prehistoric tombs at Hili Fort -known to be over 4,000 years old. Other aractions include the Al Ain oasis, Al Ain Wildlife Park & Resort, the camel market -one of the last few remaining, Wadi Adventure, a manmade white water raing, kayaking and surfing playground in the shadow of Jebel Hafeet, and the world's most advanced go-karting facilities, for a taste of the fast track. For family fun, try the newly renovated Hili Fun-City, the Gulf's oldest theme park, which now offers one of the cheapest days out around, with entry no more than AED 40 (US$ 11). AL AIN ZOO This 900 hectare park near the base of Jebel Hafeet is where visitors can see a large animal collection in enclosures that closely resemble their natural habitats. There are plenty of green public spaces for picnics and also playgrounds, a cafeteria and a train tour of the wildlife area. The Al Ain Zoo is home to over 4,000 animals, with at least 30% of its 180 species considered endangered. Conservation efforts have been strengthened by partnerships with San Diego Zoo, the Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden in Miami, and the World Association of Zoos & Aquariums. AL AIN OASIS In the heart of Al Ain, near Al Ain National Museum, this impressive oasis is filled with palm plantations, many of which are still working farms. The cool, shady walkways transport you from the heat and noise of the city to a tranquil haven; all you'll hear is birdsong and the rustle of the palm fronds.

AL AIN SAFARI Magnificently positioned against the imposing backdrop of Jebel Hafeet, the Al Ain Safari has been carefully craed out of the desert environment. At 217 hectares it is one of the world’s largest man-made African Safaris and home to a range of native African animals and 2500 plants. The overall safari experience is completely unique, primarily because visitors are driven entirely by Emirati tour-guides. This special element elevates the safari experience to a new level and highlights the local tradition of warm, sophisticated hospitality and unrivalled passion for the UAE’s proud heritage. AL AIN PALACE MUSEUM Known as the Al Ain Palace Museum, the former home of the late UAE founder, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Palace was once a political and social hub. Built in 1937 and then renovated in 1998, the building finally became a museum in 2001. Now creatively restored, the museum houses a large collection of material about the ruling family. Visitors can tour the private rooms and gardens once occupied by the ‘Father of the Nation’. AL AIN NATIONAL MUSEUM On the edge of Al Ain Oasis, this museum showcases the city's unique heritage and history. It is housed in the same compound as the Sultan Bin Zayed Fort (also known as the Eastern Fort). Divided into three main sections - archaeology, ethnography and gis - its presentations illustrate various aspects of UAE life and include an interesting collections of Bedouin jewellery, musical instruments, weapons, and a reconstruction of a traditional majlis.

AL AIN EQUESTRIAN, SHOOTING & GOLF CLUB In the shadow of the soaring Jebel Hafeet heights, this is our Oasis City’s first 18-hole facility and a fantastic environment in which to play golf and absorb the recuperative majesty of the emirate’s second-largest city. To ensure a consistent challenge, the picturesque, tranquil, Par 71 front nine is compelling, visually scenic, yet a relatively short challenge. With water in play on 12 holes, this stern but decidedly conquerable test also includes the Arabian Gulf’s longest Par 5 – the mammoth, 678yard Hole 10. To complement the 18-hole mainstay, there’s also a floodlit, nine-hole, par three Academy Course – which is ideal for a round of night golf. Numerous stables accommodate up to 155 horses, while supporting equestrian facilities include an outdoor arena made of sandblast - one of the best surfaces to learn and ride on – four surface arenas, 15 sand paddocks, three specialised horse walkers and a 3,000-metre international-standard race track. A huge visitor araction is the club’s unrivalled lessons programme. With expert horseback riding tuition for children and adults of all levels, the centre’s riding academy is unlike any other training facility in the UAE in that it offers students of all ages a wide range of riding disciplines to choose from. Simply show up, then saddle up! Considered the UAE’s best in terms of Olympic and International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) standards, the club is the place for beginners, corporate groups and experienced shooters. It offers a wide range of facilities, including: 25m Pistol range, 50m Rifle range and 10m Air Pistol and Rifle ranges. All ranges are equipped with an electronic scoring system. There are also four ranges for the clay shooting disciplines of skeet, trap and double trap. The club is also a good resource for information on shooting tips, equipment advice, gun tips, and competition opportunities for registered members.

AL AIN MALL This bright, modern mall has over 175 stores selling everything from greeting cards to gold jewellery. Anchor stores include Grand Stores, Home Centre and Paris Gallery.

AL AIN CAMEL MARKET This is the last souk of its kind in the UAE, east of Jebel Hafeet in Al Ain, and is an excellent opportunity to see camels up close and see and hear traders discussing the price and merits of their animals. There are some excellent photo opportunities, but be careful where you point your lens and always ask permission first.

10

AL AIN SOUK Also known as the Central or Old Souk, this is a great place to explore, savour the local atmosphere and practise your bargaining skills. The souk itself is a rather ramshackle affair but it is certainly different from many of the modern, air conditioned markets found elsewhere.

FOCUS ON THE EMIRATES

SOUQ AL QATTARA Dating back to the mid-20th century and founded by the late Sheikh Shakhbut bin Sultan Al Nahyan on the palm-lined road linking Al Ain’s Al Qaara and Al Jimi oases, the historic Souq Al Qaara has been renovated and re-opened.

The Souq is linked to the redeveloped Al Qaara Fort, now home to a popular arts centre, featuring hundreds of modern exhibits, workshops, a cafe and a library. www.visitabudhabi.ae/en/tag/al.ain.aspx

LUXURY CARS

NOBLE The Noble M600 is a car produced not in competition to the current super car establishment, but one, we believe, that offers those serious about their driving, an alternative philosophy and a more rewarding driving experience. Each car is hand built in England, bespoke and built to our exacting clients individual requirements by a small team of crasmen. Carbon bodied, incredibly rare and exclusive, the M600 does not compete or align

36

itself with any other currently available super car. Super light and with incredible power, the M600 boasts an impressive power to weight ratio of 542bhp per tonne, but that is only half the story, the rest is the stuff of legend... The Noble M600 delivers the ultimate driver reward with a rush of adrenalin.

E M600 ETHOS We believe that many super car manufacturers place too much emphasis on driver assistance, which, in our view, negates driver reward. Rather than rely on electronic assistance our back to basics approach concentrates on the more analogue qualities of design.

By utilising a principle of pure engineering integrity from the chassis up we ensure that the driving experience is an honest reection of the drivers skill, puî…&#x;ing you, the driver, back in control. Put simply, the Noble M600 is for those who love to drive.

HAND BUILT AND BESPOKE The M600 is meticulously hand-built in England and individually finished to the owners taste and aesthetic requirements. Exterior colour choice is only limited to the buyers imagination. For those wishing for something even more rare and individual we offer the M600 CarbonSport, featuring visible carbon weave which can be either lacquered natural weave or colour tinted.

We encourage our clients to be involved throughout the build process, we invite and welcome our owners to view the progress of the build and to meet the engineers and personnel involved in its creation. It is our belief that a lasting personal relationship between the client and manufacturer is one of the huge benefits of low volume hand craed motor manufacturing. www.noblecars.com

INTERIOR The M600 is primarily designed for speed and handling however this is not at the expense of either comfort or practicality. The cabin features a traditional bespoke British hand built finish, with your choice of leather, suede or Alcantara. Contrast or matching twin needle stitching. Exposed carbon centre console, door cards and gear knob, hand turned knobs and bezels and fine quality wool carpets bound to the edge with leather.

The seats, designed and created exclusively for the M600, are of lightweight carbon fibre composite construction which can be bespoke upholstered to individual requirements. Seat backs can be natural exposed carbon or painted to match the exterior. Seat panels can be of any combination or colour.

world luxury | DAILY | Issue 27 |

The exclusive Crystal writing instrument collection was born of the creative partnership between two legendary manufacturers, Geneva-based Caran d’Ache and the French master of fine crystal, Lalique. The unique style of this limited edition creation juxtaposes the refinement of Art Deco with the iconic Coutard motif, a succession of drops of water springing forth in a fine cascade, created by René Lalique in 1935 for the Fontaine de Coutard. A symbol of life and rebirth, in tribute to the drop of ink with which writing begins, the finely embossed Coutard motif adorns the white or black ceramic body of the pen. In its supremely refined version issued in an 18-piece limited edition, the theme is expressed with diamonds sprinkled across white gold. hp://www.carandache.com/ editions-limitees/crystaledition-limitee

Entrepreneur and acclaimed international designer Henrik Fisker and influential global superyacht builder Benei revealed the concept of a 50 meter – (164 feet) superyacht, Benei “Fisker 50”. Benei and Fisker have worked on this partnership throughout 2015 to fully engineer the feasibility of this production-optimized superyacht. The yacht has been designed in California and will be built in Livorno using an existing platform by Benei, at the heart of the Tuscan coastline. The Benei Fisker 50 is a new breed of luxury yacht that integrates a new concept developed by Benei’s engineering team with Fisker’s dynamic sporty design that embodies flowing sculptural lines, a unique front view giving the yacht its own recognizable identity, use of black carbon fiber to accentuate graphics and an innovative, visually engaging layout connecting the yacht with the serenity of the ocean. The front view of the superyacht is distinctive with three stainless steel bars, unique to the Benei Fisker 50. It gives the yacht its own identity by being radical, imposing and powerful. The captain’s window is accentuated with a characteristic white dynamic line. This is one of the recognizable style aributes of the Benei Fisker 50. The exterior design shows a dynamic sporty side view with a strong feature line flowing from the front to the rear on all three decks. The flowing lines are inspired by a perfect regressing wave, creating the visual of a sensual “rear” hip sweeping up like a wave. The yacht shows sculpture and proportions throughout, with a powerful sporty statement in motion. Extended carbon fiber shark fins give the yacht an aerodynamic and smooth appearance, and allow the functionality of incorporating lights to illuminate the ocean at night. The superyacht offers ultimate luxury living on each of the decks. Every room is designed to enjoy optimized ocean views in extreme comfort and luxury. Onboard amenities include a beach club, spa, several bars, an ocean-facing Jacuzzi, sunbathing areas on multiple decks and water toys such as jetski’s and a 6.5-meter tender. A future owner will welcome 12 guests in six cabins, looked aer by 11 crew members with comfortable staff quarters. The main deck has a reception area with a seating and a bar facing the port. It incorporates a large living room with seating for 12 people, and a bar with chairs facing the ocean with floor to ceiling glass walls that slide open to enjoy the ocean breeze. At the end of the

66

main deck is the master suite, starting with a library/office, bedroom and bathroom, all with generous ocean views. The master bedroom features a retractable “fold down” ocean-view terrace and is equipped with a fireplace, a royal bed, minibar, a huge curved TV and starlight ceiling. It ends with his/hers walk-in closets. A large inviting staircase leads to the upper deck. The upper deck features a movie theater with a large screen and comfortable, reclining beds. During the day, half of the area can be converted into a gym by sliding back the middle beds and removing the chairs. The cinema accommodates 12 people, allowing all guests to enjoy a relaxing evening. The sun deck includes a rear-facing relaxing area, a dining table, a bar and a dual-use fire pit or enlarged ice bucket in the center of a circular siing area, all for twelve guests. The yacht exterior has a dramatic body using lightweight carbon fiber accents, reclaimed wood, integrated solar panels and optional hybrid power. Advanced solar panels with a unique graphic for aesthetics, provide ambient deck lighting, using solar power stored during the day. At night, hidden ambient lights mounted on the carbon fiber wings provide light from stored solar power. The interior features advanced and sustainable materials, and state-ofthe-art technology for automated controls and optimal power management. www.henrikfisker.org/products/yacht/

The aention to detail can be seen in the choice of placing appliqués on the edge of the openworked spaces on the dial to highlight their beautiful edges. The tonneau-shaped mechanical movement with a 30-second tourbillon and seven-day power reserve demonstrates the expertise of the Manufacture and its pursuit of producing sophisticated timepieces with a refined design. The flaened oval-shaped white gold case features a dial adorned with Côtes de Genève the very same Côtes de Genève that decorate classically designed movements. This motif gives the face of the watch aesthetic tension while signalling its allegiance to traditional watchmaking. The dial is openworked around the tourbillon so that the magnificent seings of the regulating organ can be admired. Similarly, the dial is perforated to reveal part of the watch's gears and serve as a reminder of the film "Modern Times". The Ovale Tourbillon 1 is also available as a version that exudes even more sophistication. The oval case, this time made from rose gold, is paired with a shiny black dial. The dial is made from onyx, a stone used to make seals in Antiquity. The mysterious seduction of onyx is ideally suited to this model.
