GRAND HOTEL LUXURY HOTELS

When the 303-room The Ritz-Carlton, Berlin opened its doors on January 12, 2004, it is yet another impressive new landmark in Germany’s capital city, and an important addition to Europe’s most contemporary urban plaza, the Potsdamer Platz. The interior design of The Ritz-Carlton, Berlin was created by Cologne based Peter Silling. He, in turn, was inspired by the works of renowned Prussian architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel (17811841), whose architectural genius can still be viewed in many of Berlin’s most famous buildings. Furnishings chosen for the 303 guestrooms and suites bear marked resemblance to the German Imperial style which dominated the historic city for generations. It remains a strong influence even as Berlin gains a new reputation as a stylish capital city of contemporary innovation and design. Antique features within The Ritz-Carlton, Berlin, in contrast with dramatic geometric forms, include selected woods, imported marble and bronze accents. The total effect is one of optical harmony throughout the public spaces. To reflect the influence of Prussian architect Schinkel, each of the 303 guestrooms, except The Ritz-Carlton Apartment, and suites at The RitzCarlton is distinguished by original watercolors being created by Professor Markus Luepertz, a German artist highly noted for his 20th century neo-expressionism style. His works, entitled “Homage a Schinkel” come from the architect’s original design sketchbooks. Each of Luepertz’ copperplates is printed on hand-made paper, an original and unique tribute to one of the world’s most respected architects.

GRAND HOTEL WELLNESS AREA & POOL

To accommodate the needs of hotel guests with specific allergies, The Ritz-Carlton has allocated two rooms for those requiring rooms certified as environmentally free of products and substances which can provoke health-related problems. From special pillows to carpet free flooring, these rooms reflect the concerns of Ritz-Carlton for the comfort and wellbeing of all its guests. Another feature of The Ritz-Carlton is The Club Level, located on the 10th and 11th floor of the hotel. The Club Level rooms offer a variety of special amenities and services, as well as added security and privacy. The Club Lounge includes large windows overlooking the Sony Center and Tiergarten. The services of a dedicated, multilingual concierge staff make Club Level the choice of guests looking for a “hotel within a hotel” ambience. For guests wishing to keep up with their fitness routine while traveling, The Ritz-Carlton, Berlin included both a spacious workout room and a relaxing wellness area.

|6|

The health and wellness area is decorated with ornate marble intarsia and colored glass mosaics, with an indoor swimming pool and treatment rooms for facials and massage therapies. For runners, the nearby Tiergarten offers excellent jogging trails. Runners can take advantage of the hotel’s “Joggers Station,” at the entrance, for fresh towels, mineral waters, fruits and route maps. BRASSERIE DESBROSSES With the opening of the daily restaurant Brasserie Desbrosses an archetype from 1875 was celebrated – combining the best of old meets new at the heart of Berlin. Here, guests may enjoy typical French and regional cuisine within a cozy and frankly atmosphere. At the beginning of 2003, the impressive interior – including some art deco tables, mirrors, clusters and flagstones with floral paerns – was carefully dismantled in France and transported to Germany to be painstakingly restored by the interior designer Peter Silling. Soon aer, the Brasserie was brought back into life again.

BRASSERIE DESBROSSES

THE CURTAIN CLUB

At the restaurant’s heart is the open show kitchen with an antique red enamel oven from Bonnet, which weighs over two and a half tons. Younger guests will also delight in a visit to the Brasserie Desbrosses where a children menu, wooden toys and colored crayons are available. An oversized “piggy bank”, made out of old tiles and pieces of china, awaits guests on the entry of the restaurant to help keep boredom at bay. The in-house Boulangerie in the middle of the restaurant serves the best home-made croissants and baguees as well as international delicacies which can be bought as take-away. Every Sunday the Brasserie features a Champagne Brunch from noon to 03.30 p.m., where guests may enjoy as much champagne as they like while being tempted to sample the extravagant buffet which features alongside breakfast classics treats such as oysters, fresh lobster and several live cooking stations. The Champagne Brunch is the perfect start for a relaxed and unforgeable Sunday.

THE CURTAIN CLUB The Curtain Club is the bar at The Ritz-Carlton, Berlin and provides seating for up to 60 guests. It is the perfect place for cocktail connoisseurs in Berlin to enjoy a relaxed evening in an elegant ambiance. Named aer the heavy curtains which separate the bar from the lobby, The Curtain Club is more than simply a bar. Bar Manager Arnd Heissen was recently voted as Mixologist of the Year 2014 and offers unique drinks, tasty bar food and creates every cocktail the guest would like to have, even if they are unknown. On the stroke of six the curtains open the view to the bar announced and celebrated by a real Beefeater.

AFTERNOON TEA

TEA LOUNGE The Tea Lounge is the meeting place of the hotel, offering a relaxed yet refined ambiance. Part of the appeal of the Tea Lounge is its full range of drink offerings, especially teas. If somebody prefers a specially prepared tea, coffee or even a cocktail the service team has some very good selections. And, of course, kids big and small enjoy the hot cocoa topped with a star or heart-shaped dash of chocolate. Whether indulging in a predinner cocktail or partaking of a classical aernoon tea, guests may enjoy the relaxing Tea Lounge throughout the entire day. Clearly the centre-piece is the daily aernoon tea from 02.00 p.m. to 06.00 p.m. which consists of either British specialties like freshly baked scones, finely cut sandwiches, jam and cloed cream – served together with a choice of over 68 fresh tea varieties. The unique service of our TeaMaster® Sandra Rosenmueller – honored with

a gold pin received by Ronnefeldt tea house – make the stay at the Tea Lounge perfect. On selected days during the week or on special holidays a creative aernoon tea takes place, whether a Strawberry, Chocolate or an Easter aernoon tea; the themes are changing depending on the season. The classical ambience is further underpinned by the live playing of piano music. The tea menu is not presented on a conventional menu card, but in the form of a “sniffing box”, where guests have the chance to select a tea of their preference chosen from the corresponding aroma. The Ritz-Carlton, Berlin is the only hotel in Germany that features the tea of the French gourmet tea company Mariage Frères.

AT THE HEART OF BERLIN Standing just a short distance from what was formerly a section of The Berlin Wall, with a strategic location adjacent to the Sony Center and Leipziger Platz, the luxury hotel epitomizes the continued economic and cultural resurgence of Germany’s capital city. The Ritz-Carlton, Berlin is reminiscent of the golden age of art deco skyscrapers familiar in New York City and Chicago. Despite the inspiration of the golden age of art deco, the noted architectural firm of Hilmer and Saler has created a design that is a fusion of modern trends. The sandstone exterior conveys both strength and light and stand in contrast to the soaring glass and steel structures, which are already a Potsdamer Platz signature.

Luxury News BMW is in the midst of #celebrating its 100th anniversary, and to mark the occasion, it just rolled out the Vision Next 100 concept at its Munich headquarters. By all appearances, it's one of the most insane concept cars #BMW has ever conceived. If you squint your eyes, you can still see a car that's clearly a BMW here — it has the iconic "kidney" grille, for instance — but beyond that, the details are all visions of a distant future. The entire windshield is an augmented reality display, which takes the place of every single dashboard display. There are also 800 triangles embedded in the dash, which BMW calls Alive Geometry. These multicolor polygons apparently communicate "very directly with the driver through their movements, which are more like gestures than two-dimensional depictions on a display."As with other recent concept cars (including BMW's own i Vision Future Interaction Concept at CES a couple months ago), the Vision Next 100 refuses to take

sides in the self-driving debate — when you want to drive, you can, and the car helps you by drawing the optimal driving line on the windshield. That's "Boost" mode. In the alternative "Ease" mode, the car takes over, the steering wheel retracts (a solution Elon Musk has also suggested in the past), and the seats change shape to make driver-passenger communication a lile easier. Meanwhile, the windshield can be used for entertainment. www.bmw.com

IANERA ADVANCED CYCLING DESIGN BY T°RED

A new concept of (also hybrid) bike is born between design, innovation and research. Everyone has their “Black Beast”. The most difficult rise, an unbeatable rival, an irrational fear, are feelings that oen leave no room for any possible reaction. There is only one way to deal with it: creativity. From creativity “Bestianera” is born, daughter of an intuition accompanied by advanced technological content, created from a functional and synthetic “gesture” developed into a sleek design and highly innovative experimental details. ACDD department (Advanced Cycling Design Department) has been created by T°RED with the stated goal of bringing its revolutionary approach to the world of mobility on two wheels. “Bestianera” is the first creature of T°REDc – ACDD. A completely new concept for a bike, an exclusive design and the possibility of different configurations and uses make

“Bestianera” a unique animal in the cycling world: a bicycle with unique performances, lightweight, high-performance, technology driven and with an aractive, provocative and ironic design. It is born to let you move in the city with a unique means, and to run fast on the road or on the track. You simply chose between the possible configurations, just like what you do with a sports car. “Bestianera STreetRacer+” is the first bike in the world with pedal assistance made entirely of carbon fiber with a power unit integrated into the “all in one” hub and weighing less than 10 kg including baeries! The sporty frame of the “Bestianera” – which takes its origin from “track” geometries – with an organic and dynamic design combines the unique performances of lightness derived from the processing of the monocoque unidirectional carbon fiber with an incredible strength and driving comfort. “Bestianera” was created to become a “thing to ride” in which cool design and technique are an exclusive, unique and inimitable melting pot. Quantum leap in driving experience The Concept_S has the distinctive proportions of racing cars. To harvest the maximum potential of the R-AWTV_S system, the Concept_S introduces an extensive aerodynamic package that enhances the downforce over 30 percent and enables higher levels of grip. An upgraded baery pack and optimised electronics, different carbon-fibre materials and lay-ups, track-oriented interior, less sound insulation and lighter seats, bring the weight down by substantial 50 kg. The reduced weight, combined with more torque, power, downforce and grip, result in a track-ready package on the highest level.

development will feature a residential and an office building alongside the hotel, as well as a public garden and a new city square. Prices for a stay are yet unknown but the interior design of Canopy by Hilton London City will draw on the legacy of the Whitechapel Gallery and the melting pot of cultures in the surrounding area, according to the developer. www.hilton.com

With Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires, the Concept_S gets even more grip on the four most important surfaces – the contact patches between the tire and the road. The bespoke Concept_S Torque Vectoring System makes sure the full potential of the tires is used when necessary. Gaining 25 percent of power on each motor, and losing 50 kg of weight translates to a radical jump in performance. The Concept_S can fire up 1384 HP through it’s wheels and translate each atom of energy efficiently into acceleration. With higher performance come higher forces. To minimalize the distractions, Concept_S features a lightweight interior featuring carbon-fibre, Alcantara and lightweight alloys to reduce the weight even further. Five point racing harness and bucket seats keep the driver safe and steady while the infotainment is optimised for performanceoriented information. Concept_S is all about the driving experience. To get the car to it’s full potential, a driver's mind and soul must be focused on driving. The Concept_S infotainment has all the Concept_One’s functions but it is simplified in appearance, and more track orientated. It also features two cameras in the interior, one for the road and one for the driver. To get the most out of their lap proffesional drivers analyse vehicle telemetry data. Our on-line telemetry system makes it possible to follow all the data real-time on pit walls. Alternatively, the data can be analysed on the central screen, on a smartphone or a desktop computer. PING IN BERLIN Kaviar Gauche

Friederike Fiebelkorn & Nanna Kuckuck Sparkling dresses like something out of the Arabian Nights. Beautiful, gliering gowns. Nanna Kuckuck's fashionwear is glamorous and extravagant, featuring enchanting and distinctive dream dresses made of brocade, silk, taffeta and tulle. Sometimes pleated, sometimes dusted with sequins, gathered or embroidered. Inspired by a touch of exotic Far Eastern flair, cut from genuine French, Italian and Indian cloth. Nanna Kuckuck's sophisticated designs will sweep you off your feet. They are opulent and sexy, sensual and delightful. And they demonstrate that the Berlin designer is primarily focused on the artistic moment, and on exquisite aention to detail. www.nanna-kuckuck.com

Kaviar Gauche is the quintessence of modern luxury. A melange of high-quality materials and classical accents, combination of the finest fabrics and rare materials that together bring about an unexpected effect. One of a kind is thereby the symbiosis between bag and clothing: bag details are carried over to the clothes. And elements of the clothing are transferred onto the bag designs. Added is the philosophy to further develop the design elements from collection to collection, without thereby giving way to the latest trends. Thus, the by now hot in demand handbag “Lamella” surfaces again and again in modified form. www.kaviargauche.com

LUXURY WATCHES

WATCHMAKERS A. Lange & Söhne

>>

When Ferdinand A. Lange arrived in Glashüe, the local economy had already long hit rock boom in 1845. The once rich ore deposits had been exploited and the town had been bled dry. Nowadays, Glashüe is the undisputed center of the German watchmaking industry and A. Lange & Söhne has even become the poster child for German watch manufacturers. There is not a single manufacturer in Glashüe who doesn’t refer to the founder of this proud watchmaking tradition, yet there is only one who is allowed to officially use his name. The company prides itself for manufacturing nothing less than the best watches in the world. An ambition which causes them to design each new model with increased functionality, especially in regards to legibility and handling, as well as further perfecting precision. Aer it has been assembled, the watches from Lange & Söhne receive the finishing touches and are then reassembled. This manufacturing process further underscores the company’s aspirations. The manufacturer was also able to launch a number of luxury watches in recent years that are already considered classics, such as the Lange 1, Saxonia and the Langematik. www.alange-soehne.com

Glashüe Original Aer the unrest of World War II, the watchmaking industry in Glashüe was consolidated into the VEB Glashüer Uhrenbetriebe (GUB). Glashüe Original emerged as the legal successor to the GUB, once Eastern and Western Germany unified in 1990. This manufacturer was able to set new standards in the industry with refinements e.g. the threequarter plate with stripe finish, the patented panoramic date display, and also gooseneck fine tuning. The manufacturer also has an obsession with specific technical features that run throughout the entire Glashüe Original collection e.g. the moon phase in the Panomatic series or the Grande Cosmopolite Tourbillon. Lovers of fine design can always find something to suit their taste in its vintage inspired timepieces, namely the Sixties and Seventies collections, as well as in the more ladylike series of the Pavonina and Lady Serenade. www.glashuee-original.com

What began with the arrangement of onboard instruments in Bundeswehr aircras, rapidly turned into the invention of chronographs designed primarily for pilots. From the very beginning, Helmut Sinn Spezialuhren GmbH excelled with watches that were expected to fulfill the highest technical demands. For example the Sinn 142S proved the functionality of automatic winding wristwatches in a zero-gravity environment. The divers watch UX can even be found now firmly around the wrist of the elite German Federal Police, the GSG9. www.sinn.de

Montblanc

In a globalized world of watches in which components don’t know national borders any more, we are next going to take a look at a hanseatic city, whose port has long been regarded as a gateway to the world. At the beginning of the 20th century a company seled in Hamburg, which initially made its mark with elegant fountain pens. Until today, Montblanc is headquartered on the Elbe, for the production of luxury timepieces however, they resort to the expertise of Swiss watchmakers in Villeret and Le Locle, where their collections such as the Star, Timewalker, Sports or Bohème model are manufactured. The Meisterstück models emulate the style of the famous pens as much as the reminiscence of the Princesse Grace de Monaco. However, the watch manufacturer cements its extraordinary reputation with the Series Villeret 1858 timepieces and the Nicolas Rieussec Monopusher Chronograph. www.montblanc.com

LUXURY WINE TOURISM

MAKE THE MOST OF THE

GERMAN W SLOW DOWN AND BE CHARMED BY THE GERMAN WINE ROUTE. IT’S FOR ANYONE WHO IS NOT AVERSE TO A GOOD CLASS OF WINE AND TO A BIT OF SOCIALISING WITH THE LOCALS.

| 28 |

From time to time you can trust Germans to know where their country is at its best. West of the Rhine and right next to France, the much-beloved German Wine Route in the Palatinate runs through the country’s second largest wine growing area. Starting in Bockenheim in the north it works its way down south for 83 km and ends in Schweigen, right on the French border. The German Wine Route is the oldest scenic route in the country, and the region it passes through is enchanting throughout most of the year. In spring, when the almond trees lining the road are in bloom; in August when the route is closed for car traffic for one day to give cyclists free reign. Or in late summer and early autumn when wine festivals take place virtually every weekend in one of the villages along the route.

These qualities have aracted a long list of famous names. Visitors to Deidesheim, for example, will be joining a list that includes the Queen, Mikhail Gorbachev, Boris Yeltsin and Václav Havel. Former German chancellor Helmut Kohl, a native of the Palatinate region, introduced all his state visitors to the delights of German wine and local food with a gourmet twist at the five-star Deidesheimer Hof restaurant and hotel. And at Edenkoben King Ludwig I of Bavaria built himself a lile castle, now known as Villa Ludwigshöhe. Neustadt and its Hambach Castle have played their part on the national stage, too, because this is where the 1832 Hambacher Fest (Hambach Festival) marked the birth of democracy in Germany. But back to the wine. Dr. Bürklin-Wolf, Reichsrat v. Buhl or Bassermann Jordan are some of the renowned traditional estates along the Wine Route, known for their high-quality products and the famous Palatinate Riesling. Some of them open their cellars – huge and cave-like structures – to visitors, and being guided through the systems of

tunnels is both spooky and fascinating. But it is also worth seeking out some of the younger winemakers in the region, especially those who engage in organic winemaking and continue their family tradition in a 21st century fashion. The German Wine Route is oen described as Germany’s Tuscany, because the climate is mild enough for all kinds of curious things such as a kiwifruit plantation in the wine village of Maikammer. But let’s not compare this place to somewhere else in the world. Visitors should not come here and look for Tuscany in Germany, but to admire characteristic lile villages like St Martin, a picture-perfect German wine village with timberframed houses, gazebos, gables and high round archways. For some the route may have a Mediterranean touch, but actually this is simply a lile corner of Germany where the sun maybe shines a bit more oen than in other parts, and where drinking and knowing about wine is not an exception but the rule..

LUXURY CARS

THE ULTIMATE G AN EXTRAORDINARY DOUBLE

THE NEW MERCEDESMAYBACH S-CLASS: AN EXTRA HIGHLIGHT IN THE LUXURY SEGMENT. STYLISH, EFFORTLESS SUPERIORITY COMBINED WITH TRENDSETTING EXCLUSIVITY.

In a double world premiere on two continents, the new Mercedes-Maybach S-Class will be unveiled almost simultaneously in its two key markets of China and the USA. The vehicle makes its debut just hours apart at the Los Angeles Auto Show and at Auto Guangzhou. “The history of prestige vehicles made by Daimler extends back to the earliest days of the motor car. We have now commenced a new chapter with the MercedesMaybach S-Class” points out Ola Källenius, member of the Divisional Board of MercedesBenz Cars responsible for sales. The new Mercedes-Maybach S-Class in action. The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class melds the perfection of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class with the exclusivity of Maybach. Some features distinguish these vehicles from production models include extra spaciousness with lavishly designed, prestigious interiors offering extensive scope for individualization. Mercedes-Maybach is not an equipment line – it is a sub-brand that in future will provide Mercedes-Benz vehicles in an even more exclusive form.

ERMAN MARQUE WORLD PREMIERE Exterior design: elegant and exclusive. In its exterior design, the Mercedes-Maybach SClass combines stylish, effortless superiority with trend-seing exclusivity. The vehicle makes modern luxury come alive in an exceptional way. Along with the extended wheelbase, emphatic lines suggest power and dynamism. Due to the sidewall’s special design, characteristic design elements for the S-Class are retained such as the sweeping, dome-shaped roofline. The key distinguishing feature is the new side line: by comparison with the long-wheelbase version of the S-Class, the striking rear door has been shortened by 66 millimeters and therefore appears to meld seamlessly into the overall composition. The door has no triangular window because this has been relocated into the C-pillar. As a result, the rear seats are situated beyond the door cutout, which creates a feeling of exceptional privacy and exclusivity. The elegant Maybach “Manufaktur” logo – a double M inside an arched triangle – adorns the C-pillars on both sides.

Modern luxury in lounge-style. In the interior of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, passengers are enveloped in lounge-style, modern luxury. With its clear architecture, refined materials and stylish controls, the vehicle embodies a sensuous elegance. The Exclusive trim package, which is fied as standard, increases the sense of perceived value still further, particularly in the rear of the vehicle. Sensuously curved, fine-wood trim with a handcraed feel surrounds the entire rear seating system. The seat-back lining, doors and nozzle coverings are resplendent in fine wood. For an exclusive look, the front centre armrests with nappa leather or exclusive nappa leather upholstery feature embossed Maybach crests. Another special feature in the dashboard is the analogue clock with an IWC design.

Luxury features The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class contains all the amenities of the conventional S-Class, a number of exclusive interior touches underscore the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class’s ambition to lead. These include the exclusive optional Maybach perfume AGARWOOD for fragrancing as part of the AIR-BALANCE package and two silver-plated, handcraed champagne flutes. The Burmester® high-end 3D surround sound system offers a unique optical and acoustic experience. As a visual highlight, the tweeters in the rear doors of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class are particularly sophisticated and can also be moved towards the passengers in a spiral motion.

For more comfort EASY ADJUST luxury head restraints come as standard for the driver and passenger, and the one on the front-passenger side is folding. For the rear passenger, the Chauffeur package also includes a heel support, which extends from under the front passenger seat. This allows a reclined position that sets new standards in the automotive sector with respect to sleeping and resting comfort.

Like an aircra seat, the center console is available with two tables which can be easily folded in or out using one hand. The table surfaces have leather inserts to provide a comfortable writing surface.

Aeroacoustics: in the back of the world’s quietest production saloon. Inside the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, the level of wind noise is impressively low and, despite the large windows, beers even the quietest car in the world – the S-Class Coupé. For passengers in the rear, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is the world’s quietest production saloon car. Extensive measurements were also taken in experimental vehicles considering the fully reclined position in the rear. That is because positioning the passenger away from the side windows and towards the rear window and triangular windows creates a new acoustic situation. Special seals optimize the noise insulation, thereby ensuring excellent aeroacoustic performance in the rear. These include seals over the C joints in the rear doors, which have a hose profile rather than the usual lip seal, as well as bonded triangular windows with a special seal.
