FORTNUM & 300 YEARS & COUNTING LUXURY FOOD

FOR THREE CENTURIES FORTNUM'S HAS BEEN COMMITTED TO BRINGING THE WORLD'S BEST FOOD TO ITS FLAGSHIP STORE ON PICCADILLY – OFTEN FROM CONTINENTS AWAY.

Fresh food, though, has always come from as close to these Isles as possible. Respecting this hemisphere's seasons has always seemed obvious to us: we've never really wavered from the path. 1707 - Fortnum meets Mason Hugh Mason had a small shop in St James’s Market and a spare room in his house, which was taken by William Fortnum, a footman in Queen Anne’s household. The Royal Family’s insistence on having new candles every night le the budding entrepreneur enough wax for a sideline that gave him enough money to start what was to become Fortnum & Mason. 1794 - Postal Service In the days before the General Post Office, anybody could set up a business to send and receive mail. Fortnum’s had leerboxes for paid and unpaid leers which were picked up six times a day. Soldiers and sailors, already among the company’s best customers, received a discount. This lasted until 1839 and the founding of the GPO.

|8|

1815 - Waterloo Fortnum & Mason – the foremost establishment in a "nation of shopkeepers" - helped the army march on its stomach to final victory over Napoleon. Honey, dried fruits, spices and above all preserves were ideal for the campaigning soldier and were advertised as such in The Times. 1851 - Dickens and the hamper By the time of the Great Exhibition of 1851, readyto-eat dishes were all the rage. Fortnum & Mason led a trend in luxury foods, with dishes such as "poultry and game in aspic, hard-boiled eggs in forcemeat (the famous "Scoish egg"), dry and green turtle, boar's head, truffles, mangoes… all decorated and prepared so as to require no cuing." This evolved into its famous hampers which became popular at events such as the Henley Regaa and horse racing at Ascot. Charles Dickens wrote of one Epsom Derby; "Look where I will.... I see Fortnum & Mason. All the hampers fly wide open and the green downs burst into a blossom of lobster salad!"

& MASON

1855 - Crimea, Queen Victoria and The Lady with the Lamp The Crimean War was the first to be covered by on-the-spot reporters. Their reports highlighted the appalling conditions soldiers had to cope with, especially in hospitals. The Queen took a personal interest, sending Fortnum's an order "to dispatch without delay to Miss Nightingale in Scutari a huge consignment of concentrated beef tea" aer the scandal of the hospitals had become known in England. 1886 - Baked Beans and Mr Heinz When an American called Mr Heinz came around with five cases of samples of his canned food, Fortnum & Mason took them all, giving the country its first taste of his famous baked beans. 1922 - Everest Fortnum's food was an essential part of any big expedition to the far reaches of the Empire, from Africa to the Himalayas. For the 1922 Everest expedition, the store supplied 60 tins of quail in foie gras and four dozen boles of champagne (Montebello 1915).

Second World War Fortnum's opened a special Officers' Department dedicated to providing something different to bully beef. Officers were also able to get insect powder, exotic cigarees and other essentials such as the silver-plated “Spork”, a combination knife-and fork. 1984 - Christmas hit In November 1984, Fortnums made national news when it sold the "Do They Know It's Christmas?" single, the song wrien by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise money for relief of the famine in Ethiopia. 1999 - Web savvy Fortnums launches its first online store with just hampers - 50 of them. Today it features over 800 products. www.fortnumandmason.com

CHILTERN F Chiltern Firehouse celebrates contemporary, ingredient-focused cooking, with an underlying American accent. Michelin-starred chef Nuno Mendes draws on a career split between the United States and Europe to create a changing menu of reimagined classics and bold new flavours, with an emphasis on seasonality and healthy eating. The restaurant is the latest offering from hotel magnate André Balazs, who owns the glamorous Chateau Marmont in Hollywood and the Mercer hotel in the Big Apple. Originally one of London’s first purpose-built fire stations, the Grade II listed gothic Victorian building has been transformed by Balazs into a swanky New york-style brasserie with high ceilings, hanging light fiings, large mirrors and a busy open kitchen. Guests are greeted by aractive top-haed doormen and escorted through a prey garden courtyard to their tables.

| 18 |

What's on the menu? The kitchen is headed up by chef Nuno Mendes, formerly of Viajante, who has created a relaxed but vibrant menu with many American flourishes. Typical dishes include chargrilled iberico pork, blackened salmon with sea kale and trout roe and crab-stuffed doughnuts. The Firehouse Caesar, a reinvention of the classic salad with chunks of crispy chicken skin, is a particular favourite, though we imagine the kitchen staff are used to witholding the dressing. Who might I spot? Lily Allen, Kate Moss, Simon Cowell, Linsday Lohan, David Beckham, Bill Clnton, Bradley Cooper, Tony Blair and Orlando Bloom have all been glimpsed sneaking out of the back door. www. chilternfirehouse.com

Charter Your Own Bespoke Bogies With the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) offering private luxury trains on demands, enjoying five-star facilities and geing down at chosen destinations have now become a reality. One such train was hired by a group of 40 businessmen from the Gulf to visit Roorkee in Uarakhand in January for a business deal. “We were approached by a private investor for to hire a luxury train for his Gulf-based businessmen clientele. We provided them with executive class coaches, special food menu, journey timings as part of their requirements,” said a senior IRCTC official. The group le home satisfied and in turn opened brighter avenues for this subsidiary of Indian Railways. With an eye on increasing revenue by expanding the ambit of its luxury train services, IRCTC has sent a team to Dubai for publicising their customised services. It has already received a request from a China-based tour operator for a luxury train on Buddhist circuit in India. “A meeting was held with the company, in the Ministry of Commerce early this month, to understand their requirements. They want us to provide them with a meditation room and some other specifications. We have no issues customising if they give us a guarantee of Chinese tourists coming in large numbers,” said the official. He added things are progressing and a deal is

expected in the coming months. IRCTC runs an ultra luxury Maharajas Express on five routes during winter season and it plans to press it on other routes as part of its charter services during other seasons. www.irctc.co.in

Sea level's CF8 augments the future of luxury yachting with curved glass structure Dutch yacht design and engineering company sea level looks to the future of long distance water travel with the ‘ CF8’ concept. enabling a family to bring their cars and possessions, the 80 meter yacht would essentially be a floating community. unlike traditional yachts, the hull and glass superstructure would be inextricably linked together through a strong outer shape and the downward lines from the upper section of the hull towards the bow would give the yacht effective aerodynamic shape. during the design process, sea level was influenced by the louwman exclusive cars glass showroom in the netherlands from which they proposed a curved structure that counter poses the outer lines. the 100 cubic meter glass garage also takes into account an hydraulic platform for disembarking cars from the yacht. with this, the owner will be able to choose the appropriate vehicle from his/her own collection for any occasion. for the feasibility of this design, sea level created a structural feature with a large centre line supporting beam through the entire ‘CF8’. the extreme width also offers great stability at sea that will offer maximum comfort to the guests and crew. onboard, the owners will experience an indoor and outdoor atmosphere that never existed in superyachts. ww.sealevel.nl

Luminous white beaches cosset a tropical interior of coconut palms and takamaka trees cradled between three granite outcrops, 110m to 180m in height, whose polished grey ramparts rise from the white sands and filigree reefs of the azure ocean.

North Island is a place that unashamedly aims at providing the very best in privacy, location, accommodation, services, facilities and experience, yet has restored its environment to a place of verdant plenty – a Noah’s Ark afloat in warm tropical waters in colours of blue and aquamarine. The true essence of North Island is a rare encounter that is in harmony with the environment – one that touches and inspires the lives of all who walk her beaches, dive her waters and contemplate her beauty.

North Island is a sanctuary where natural habitats, long neglected, have been rehabilitated so that endangered Seychelles fauna and flora could be reintroduced and given a place to grow and thrive. On this floating paradise, 11 guest villas have been built from local materials reaped from the For the latest news on luxury worldwide rehabilitation process, where luxury and simplicity mingle to form a signature architectural style we call ‘barefoot luxury’.
