At its 48th session on October 11, 2002, the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) designated major parts of the Wadden Sea as the world's fifth and Europe's first Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA Wadden Sea). The designation marked an important step in the joint Danish, Dutch and German efforts to protect the Wadden Sea in respect of impacts from shipping. Risk analysis versus impact assessment • Ship density has been identified, • Various kind of data are collected annually (AIS; port info; Lloyds) • Risk analysis result in a figure stating the likelihood of an outflow of oil in a traffic lane. • Double hull tankers have been taken into account and • Wind energy parks are considered. • • • •
Sensitivity maps are available, Seasonal effects are known, The tidal area and natural influences are recognized Other effects are known influencing response.
