SUMMER INSTITUTE 2022
MARITIME DECARBONIZATION 22 - 26 AUGUST, MALMÖ
BUILD YOUR CAREER THE MARITIME INDUSTRY IS AT THE BEGINNING OF ONE OF ITS GREATEST TECHNICAL, ECONOMIC AND OPERATIONAL TRANSFORMATIONS. BE A PART OF PREPARING FOR THE TRANSITION TO A ZERO GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSION MARITIME INDUSTRY. SEEING THE MARITIME ENERGY TRANSITION AS AN OPPORTUNITY IS PART OF THE PHILOSPHY BEHIND THE WORLD MARITIME UNIVERSITY’S (WMU) SUMMER INSTITUTE FOCUSED ON MARITIME DECARBONIZATION. Climate action represents an opportunity for the maritime industry that inherently offers the lowest greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption per transport work. The industry has a wide range of technical possibilities for energy saving and replacement of fossil energy with sustainable options. Maritime transport also offers opportunities for adopting carbon free energy sources given the dimensions of commercial vessels and the fact that vast renewable energy resources are available on the world’s oceans. The WMU Summer Institute on Maritime Decarbonization takes a holistic approach by
looking at regulatory, social, environmental, technological and economic challenges of maritime decarbonization. A combination of taught lectures and class interaction highlight the complexity of the issues while looking for solutions, all within the exceptional international environment provided by WMU. Topics include fundamental international regulations, technical aspects of ship design, and future energy technologies including alternative fuels as well as wind and solar power. Economic mechanisms will also be explored as they determine to a large extent the plausible pathways for decarbonization in the context of supply chain and financing. PARTICIPANT PROFILE The Summer Institute on Maritime Decarbonization is open to graduate/ PhD students, researchers, and other academics interested in gaining a thorough understanding
of maritime decarbonization and IMO/EU GHG reduction strategies for the shipping sector, as well as individuals interested in acquiring further skills for career development. Industry professionals are also welcome to participate including maritime companies, shore personnel, naval architects, and marine engineers, and shipping and port/shipyard professionals such as engineers, managers, and executives engaged in decarbonization and the processes of the IMO GHG Strategy. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Participants should be close to completing, or have already completed, their Master’s or PhD studies and/or have several years of equivalent professional experience in the field. Participants will be selected based on curriculum vitae, academic and professional career, and a letter of motivation.
