INTRODUCTION Ship dismantling yards has been located at Aliaga/Izmir in Turkey since 1976. Recycling of ships to spare parts or row materials method is both economic and environmental friendly methodology. Iron ore mining and steel production process needs three times more energy consumption and produces more air and environmental pollution. Age of ship is one of the most important factors that affecting marine casualties. Therefore, recycling industry is called as ‘green industry’

INTRODUCTION Turkey is the largest ship dismantling nation in Europe and as an industry is currently in the process of embracing the ongoing changes of implementing standards documented in the European Union’s Strategy for Better Ship Dismantling within its own processes and company policies. However, one of the main problems identified during this transitional period is the lack of knowledge and understanding of the basic health, safety and environmental competences displayed from the management level down.

SD YARDS IN ALIAGA ZONE The total area of Aliaga SD zone is 633.877 m2 and shore length is 1450 m. There are still 23 SD companies are in zone. Although Turkey is sharing nearly 17% of market in numbers but only 5% of ldt. The total area of dismantling zone is smaller when compared with other alternatives.

THE ROLE OF ASR IN SHIP-DIGEST PROJECT • Aliaga Shipping and Recycling Company (ASR) is one of the core partner of Ship-DIGEST project located in the Aliaga ship dismantling area. • The concrete pavement size of the dismantling area is more than 30.000m2. ASR, in cooperation with international organizations, has built their ship dismantling yard which will meet the requirements of the IMO, Hong Kong Convention and aims to become "The World's Lead Model" in Ship Dismantling. ASR’s company mission is to keep the working area free from accidents beside protecting the environment while also being proud of the work accomplished. 2013-04-15

THE ROLE OF ASR IN SHIP-DIGEST PROJECT ASR is the biggest SD yard in Aliaga zone; the area and shore length is nearly three times bigger than other SD yards. Also all cutting area is paved with concrete; primary and secondary cutting zone is separated. Drainage canals are constructed and spilled oil can be collected automatically. Although Turkish SD industry seems more safe and environmental friendly, some abovementioned gaps should be filled by utilizing modern technology and trainings for SD workers. For this reason, ASR has been taken part in EU project: Ship DIGEST.

CONCLUSIONS Ship dismantling industry is a complex industry that needs special care in its all steps. It is obvious that Turkish SD industry is more sensitive about safety and environment. However, safety, environmental and occupational health concerns are not playing important role rather than scrap prices on SD yard selection decision processes for ship owners. Therefore, specific rules and regulations should force not only SD yards, but also ship owners for clean recycling processes. Being better is not enough for Turkish SD industry because of humanrelated errors still play important role on several accidents, incidents and environmental pollutions. The trainings about all type of activities which are done during all steps of dismantling are very important to get more safe and environmental friendly industry. By Ship-DIGEST project, abovementioned weaknesses will be converted to strengths. Therefore Turkish SD industry will be really a ‘green industry’ by the Ship-DIGEST project and the role of ASR in this project. 2013-04-15
