EMBRACING THE GREAT COMMISSION YOUR ROLE IN REACHING THE UNREACHED

4

PRAY-ERS Missions, at its core, is a spiritual activity. Paul asked the church in Ephesus to pray for him to proclaim the gospel boldly (Eph. 6:19). Our prayer partners are vital community members effecting spiritual breakthroughs in UPGs and prayer covering for the field workers. We are looking for 10,000 people to join our prayer team to pray with us.

GIVERS God has given us all responsibility for stewarding the resources he has entrusted us. We are all called to give and be generous as God has allowed (2 Cor. 9:7-11). To the Giver, he has given a special grace to steward more resources and direct them to missions. Through our financial partner's generosity, we bring the gospel message, train leaders, and meet the practical needs of the communities WO field workers serve. How might you be involved in giving and supporting the ongoing work of the gospel amongst UPGs?

J

uly marked another key moment in World Outreach history as partners and guests from around the world joined together at the Global Summit in Thailand. In the joy and the wonder of celebrating all that God is doing in the nations, two truths came into stark focus: there is still much work needed to finish the task of reaching the unreached, and it can only be done through the collaboration and participation of the entire global Church.

Life on the field can be very challenging, and the missionary often needs a support system (read people) to encourage them spiritually, emotionally, and relationally. I encourage you to reach out to a missionary you know and connect with them, send them a word of encouragement, a meme you just laughed at, or ask them how they are doing and listen to them without judgment. These simple activities often mean a lot to those on the field.

GO-ERS The Great Commission (Matt. 28:18-20) to go to every ethné (people group) and make disciples who make disciples has not changed. How can people hear the Good News of Jesus without someone going and sharing it (see Rom.10:14-15)? The need for people to 'go' to the unreached remains strong.

ARE YOU CALLED TO PRAY. GIVE, SEND AND GO? LEARN MORE HERE

The Apostle Paul starts his letter to the Philippian church thanking them for their partnership in the gospel (Phil.1:3-5). Paul knew how vital these relationships were for himself, his team, and the communities they served so they might hear the gospel. As in Paul's time, the missionary task was too great to do alone; the same is true today. There are still approximately 7000 Unreached People Groups (UPGs) remaining today. The remaining task is too great for one missionary or organisation to do alone. It will require many fulfilling a wide spectrum of roles to see the remaining UPGs hear the good news of Jesus:

In World Outreach, we thank God for the various partnerships we have around the globe. In this edition of the NATIONS magazine, we want to celebrate a few of these various partnerships and highlight the roles that help us advance the gospel amongst UPGs. I hope you are encouraged by reading these accounts and challenged to consider what your role in missions could be.

PRAYER FOCUS

PRAYING FOR THOSE WHO ARE IN WAR AND PERSECUTION In the distant corners of Manipur, India, believers are wrestling with immense challenges due to ongoing conflict and persecution. Let's turn our hearts to these places, where hardships are testing the faith of many. In Manipur, life has become a struggle. Roads are blocked, making it hard to get enough food and clean water. The scenes are grim – stores robbed, cars and bikes set on fire. Even children can't play outside anymore, and schools have shut down. For families who follow the Christian faith, the situation is even tougher. Prices for basic things like water have skyrocketed. The fighting sides have set fields on fire, ruining crops and leaving people feeling hopeless. Churches, once places of worship, now bear the scars of damage. Meeting for prayer is risky, as it can lead to attacks. This has serious effects – less money is given to churches, pastors can't support their families, and the sense of fear keeps growing. People make false accusations out of anger, looking for someone to blame. Amid these challenges, Jen G., World Outreach Prayer Coordinator, urges us to come together in prayer for the field workers in Manipur, India. Let us pray for God to strengthen their hearts, that this great trial would root the Christians even deeper in relationship with God. Let’s also ask for peace that passes understanding and calms their anxiety in the midst of much uncertainty. Pray for wisdom on how to respond, and how to help their kids through these hard times. Let’s pray for daily 6

provisions, and for God to graciously restore all that has been lost. As we pray, let's ask God for miraculous help for his people. Let's hope for songs of hope to rise even when things seem bleak. Let’s boldly ask God for the fighting to come to an end, and for peace to be firmly restored in this state. In this time of prayer, let's stand together with Manipur, India. Through our united prayers and God’s abundant grace, together we can shift the spiritual and natural realities until real change comes.

CHRISTIANS PERSECUTED IN PAKISTAN Christians in Punjab are facing severe persecution. Mid-August 2023, crowds vandalised and set fire to eight churches on blasphemy claims when two Christian men were charged on the grounds of desecrating the Qu’ran and abusing the prophet, Mohammed. One of our workers stated: “It was a dark day for Pakistani Christians on Wednesday when multiple churches in J Town were set alight. Armed mobs attacked and burned Christian churches and homes in Pakistan after blasphemy allegations today." Videos on social media showed hundreds of people armed with batons and sticks attacking the churches, setting them ablaze, while another mob attacked private homes, torching them and breaking

windows. It is alleged that mosque loudspeakers were used to urge people to participate in the demonstration. “Better to die if you don’t care about Islam,” one cleric is heard saying in a video.

WORLD OUTREACH EXPOSURE TRIPS

EXPERIENCING MISSION IN ACTION There is nothing like experiencing the work of a World Outreach Project first-hand. While it is encouraging to read testimonies of how the Gospel is making inroads, watch inspirational movies, and hear second-hand reports, there is nothing like experiencing the hand of God at work among a people group, first-hand. It can truly change your life. And so it was for a group of adventurous people who embarked on an Exposure Trip in July 2023, led by Pamela Ledley who oversees development and mobilisation for World Outreach in Australia. Bangkok, a city pulsating with life and layered with the fusion of modernity and tradition, served as the backdrop for an extraordinary encounter. Over the course of just four days, the participants would come to understand that faith knows no boundaries and miracles thrive in the most unexpected corners. The group met some of our key field ministries including: Rahab Ministries, Top Kids, The Good News Team and more. This vision trip was intended to let believers experience

strengthen the work on the field, and give a better understanding of what missions amongst an unreached people group is all about. While the focus of these trips is to serve, refresh, and encourage our missionaries through the various ministry activities planned, we also pray God will touch the heart of each participant to discover how they can make a difference in what God is doing.

EXPOSURE TRIP TESTIMONY DITTA'S JOURNEY I genuinely believe that God's amazing work is happening all over the world, and I wanted to use my skills to 'tell those stories'. During our journey, we came across some remarkable places and met extraordinary individuals. But one particular encounter left a lasting impression: meeting Prai and her team at the Rahab Ministries.

New to the vision and mission of World Outreach, young adult, Ditta Prawiro, a gifted photographer and videographer, embarked on the July 2023 Exposure Trip. With a lens as her tool, she captured the stories of lives being changed. Joining from Melbourne Australia, this is her recount of joining this adventure: I've known about World Outreach for a while; my church supports it, and a close friend is a Mission Partner. So, when the opportunity came up to go on an exposure trip, my answer was a wholehearted "YES!"

Seeing Rahab Ministries in action in the heart of the Patpong Red Light District was truly touching. They're introducing the transformative power of the gospel to women trapped in prostitution, providing them with job opportunities and teaching them about microbusinesses. We even visited a bubble tea shop owned by two sisters who, thanks to Rahab's support, broke free from their previous circumstances and became successful business owners. If you ever have the chance to witness mission work, I wholeheartedly encourage you to say "YES!" Embrace the experience with an open heart and open eyes, and you'll be filled with hope. God is actively working in the darkest corners of the world, calling on men and women to undertake courageous endeavors. It's an experience that will not only change your heart but also forever reshape your perspective.

CROSS-CULTURAL COMMUNICATION: BRIDGING THE GAP In today's globalised world, cross-cultural communication has become an essential skill for anyone working in international contexts, especially in the field of missions. The ability to understand and communicate effectively with people from different cultures can make all the difference in building relationships, sharing the gospel, and achieving the mission's goals. At World Outreach, we believe that cross-cultural communication is not just a matter of learning a few phrases or customs, but rather a deep respect for other people's cultures, values, and ways of life. As the apostle Paul wrote, "I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some" (1 Cor. 9:22, NIV). One of the first steps in cross-cultural communication is to recognise and respect the differences between

cultures. This means being aware of different customs, values, beliefs, and social norms, and understanding how they shape people's behaviour and communication styles. For example, in some cultures, direct eye contact may be seen as a sign of respect and engagement, while in others it may be considered impolite or confrontational. Another important aspect of cross-cultural communication is learning to adapt your communication style to the people you are interacting with. This means being aware of your own communication habits and how they may be perceived by others and adjusting as needed. For example, speaking slowly and clearly, using simple language, and avoiding slang or idioms can help to ensure that your message is understood by people who may not speak your language fluently. At the same time, cross-cultural communication also involves active listening and seeking to understand the other person's perspective. This means asking questions, clarifying assumptions, and being open to feedback and different viewpoints. In many cultures, building relationships and trust is essential before any business or ministry can take place, so taking the time to listen and build rapport is a crucial investment in the mission's success. Finally, cross-cultural communication requires a willingness to learn and grow, both personally and professionally. This means seeking out opportunities for training, education, and cross-cultural immersion, and being open to feedback and constructive criticism. It also means recognizing that mistakes will inevitably be made and using them as opportunities for reflection and growth rather than sources of discouragement or frustration. Cross-cultural communication is not just a means to an end but a valuable end in itself. By learning to communicate across cultural boundaries with respect, empathy, and humility, we can build relationships and partnerships that are grounded in mutual understanding and respect. As we work together to share the gospel and serve the needs of people around the world, let us strive to be bridges of communication, connecting people across cultures and bringing the hope of Jesus Christ to the nations.

CATCHING THE VISION SUPPORTER SPOTLIGHT: DANIEL FABIYANIC In a world that often races towards progress and prosperity, there are those whose hearts resonate with a different rhythm, one that beats for compassion, service, and the eternal. Meet Daniel Fabiyanic, a businessman whose partnership with World Outreach is not just a financial contribution, but a testament to the power of aligning one's resources with a higher purpose. Daniel's story reflects the essence of being a steward, leveraging resources for eternal change. His partnership with World Outreach exemplifies the ripple effect that can occur when faith meets action. It's an invitation to businesses around the world to consider the profound impact they can make by joining hands with a mission that seeks to touch lives beyond the horizon of today.

What led you to become involved with World Outreach, and what sparked your passion for missions and reaching the unreached?

Could you share a bit about your business and its values? How do these align with the goals of World Outreach?

From childhood I have always been impressed by the sacrifice and devotion that missionaries have exhibited and it left an impression on me that has stayed with me to this day. The Holy Spirit directed me to invest into what has eternal values, that which pleased his heart. He highlighted to me the need and his heart for the lost and poor of this world, which prompted me to ask, "OK Lord where and to whom do you want me to direct my giving to?". I asked this question many times in prayer, and pleaded with the Lord to answer me as I didn’t want to miss his direction and opportunity to do something that had the eternal value, that which would truly please his heart.

There is nothing sophisticated, or on the surface divinely inspired. It is a simple model to be honest in what you do, work hard and use the skills God has given you. The Lord made it clear: “This business exists because I want it to exist”. On that basis, it is his business and his money, I am just allowed to run it for him. The alignment is simple: “Lord, what do you want to do with YOUR money”. God’s hand on the business stays while it exists for his purpose to carry out his work. It is a very simple model. If you want God’s provision, protection and blessing do his will, he is incredibly kind and patient with all of us, but if our intention and motives are right, God does the rest. He only needs a willing heart.

How did you first hear about World Outreach, and what aspects of their mission resonated with you the most? It was shortly afterwards that Bruce Hills contacted me from out of the blue to have a coffee with him. The Lord spoke clearly and said, "Invest here! They are doing my work, my way. WOI are my hands and feet to the unreached people of the world." 12

Can you recall a specific moment or experience that solidified your decision to financially partner with World Outreach? How did that impact you personally and professionally? Speaking with Bruce, he gave a need and value for some work in the Middle East, and it dawned on me, I can actually do something that really can affect the lives of people who would otherwise not hear the gospel. It was a very simple path that had eternal benefits blazed all over it. I struggled

to believe that something so simple could profoundly affect the lives of so many people, and that God would allow someone like me to be a part of his work is very humbling. I am so grateful that the Lord would do this for me.

What would you say to other business people who are considering partnering with World Outreach but may be unsure of how they can contribute? We have only one chance in life to do his work, time passes so quickly and soon this will be gone too, there is eternity at stake for so many people yet to be reached by the gospel. We who are privileged enough to be invited to be part of God's plan need to realise it, and follow God’s calling. Real treasure is stored up for those who partner with his work, and God’s provision comes with it. We will never regret it.

ADVANCING TOGETHER

SUMMIT 2023

World Outreach held its global gathering, Summit 2023, in Thailand in July. This marked a pivotal juncture for attendees worldwide. 323 delegates from 31 nations gathered in person for the first time in 5 years. As a community, we fellowshipped, worshipped God together, prayed for the nations, ministered to one another, and received insightful biblical teaching. We left freshly inspired, strengthened and with renewed vision to bring the gospel to Unreached People Groups everywhere.

Here is what some of our delegates shared about the Summit:

“It was a wonderful time. It was so refreshing.” “I had an amazing time with God and gained a lot in each session.” “A phenomenal conference which managed to exceed other conferences we’ve had.” “Thank you very much for everything. It was truly a blessing to travel after covid and come to such an inspiring and exciting Summit. God bless you all.” “It was lovely to see the growth in WO and so many nations represented.”

THE NATIONS COURSE EQUIPPING MISSIONARIES FOR CROSS-CULTURAL IMPACT

16

The Nations Course is a World Outreach initiative that has been developed to equip new missionaries with tools to ensure their first term is successful and fruitful. The course is also valuable for missionaries already on the field.

EXPLORING EFFECTIVE GOSPEL COMMUNICATION ACROSS CULTURES When it comes to spreading the Gospel across diverse cultures, effective communication is key. But how can we ensure that the message transcends cultural barriers? How do we avert mere behavioural-level transformation and facilitate transformation at the heart-level? What is the role of the Holy Spirit? How do we sustain ministry for the long haul? These questions and many more are explored in the Nations Course. It exists to launch people into effective cross-cultural missions to unreached people groups. We desire to graduate field workers that are both resilient to the pressures and temptations of ministry, and connected to people who can support them. Nations Course trainers are themselves from diverse backgrounds with different expertise. All have on-the-field experience. They impart to our participants skills as varied as strategic planning, learning a language, storytelling, and managing conflict, together with skills to help our participants thrive in cross-cultural environments. However, the Nations Course is about more than learning from trainers. Our students value the relationships formed with other participants during the course along with their trainers. Everybody brings their experiences, understandings, diverse gifts, and identities, and as we study, laugh, and eat together, we are all richer for it learning together in residence at one venue. Relational community is therefore the incubator in which knowledge, character and skills are developed.

unrest and persecution which caused significant disruption this year. Firstly, a lack of finances for airfares and course fees, means that many people could not attend without help. For this, World Outreach facilitates sponsorship. Secondly, concerns over leaving their ministry temporarily and the time pressures associated is a stress point for people already established cross-culturally.

VOICES FROM THE COURSE: PARTICIPANT TESTIMONIALS “It was great being here because God was here.” - Kenya “Apart from the wonderfully rich experiences with other students and teachers (those have been a highlight) the personal application of this learning has been profound, God speaks.” - Australia “The applications give me a hands-on experience that bring clarity and confidence to me.” - Indonesia

EMPOWERING THE NEXT GENERATION: SPONSORSHIP FOR GLOBAL IMPACT As World Outreach seeks to expand its global community by evangelising and discipling yet more unreached people groups the need for equipping and training new workers, many from the majority world becomes imperative. As mentioned, their resources are limited and yet the value of training in accelerating their effectiveness and longterm commitment is proven. WO seeks sponsors who will similarly commit to the training of our next generation of field workers.

MEET THE PRINCIPALS: MALCOLM & WENDY TAYLOR Malcolm and Wendy Taylor, are the Nations Course Principals and facilitators. They are passionate about seeing every person equipped well for cross-cultural ministry. Others note they complement each other, with Malcolm providing calm, and steady leadership, while Wendy thrives on bringing together the course material and technology. They have been with World Outreach for over 15 years. People do not always find it easy to attend the Nations Course for two reasons mainly; notwithstanding political

INTERNSHIP STORY

CAPTURING THE WORK OF WORLD OUTREACH THROUGH ONE COUPLE'S LENS Say hello to Wesley and Moriah Cannon, a young married couple in their early 20s from the USA, who've swapped the usual for something amazing. They've let go of their jobs, apartment and everyday life to spend three months with World Outreach. They will be traveling the world and using their creative skills to spotlight our field workers, projects, and unreached people groups. With their cameras and unwavering passion, Wesley and Moriah are doing more than just capturing videos and photos. They're getting to the heart of dedication and the powerful message of Jesus Christ. In an exclusive chat with Nations magazine, we explore the journey of this special couple and uncover their motivations and the impact they're hoping to make. Get ready to be inspired by their story!

20

What initially drew you to World Outreach, and what sparked your interest in serving the media team? Can you share the story of how you first connected with the organisation? We have had a desire to use video and various forms of storytelling to capture and share accounts of what God is doing in the lives of our brothers and sisters all around the globe. We prayed for the Lord to lead us in that and in how to use that, and he brought us to World Outreach (WO). Serving with WO has already been an amazing answer to that prayer. We first learned about WO from one of Wesley’s close friends, whose wife grew up as an MK (Missionary Kid) while her parents served with WO. We were able to connect with her parents and get involved that way.

What were your primary motivations and aspirations for dedicating your time and resources to World Outreach? How did you envision your service making a difference in the lives of others? Our desire and hope is to connect believers worldwide in prayer, understanding, encouragement, and as truly one Family by sharing films of what is happening and how God is working in and through the body of Christ. We pray that through our films and storytelling, we are able to give workers a resource for them to share with others what God is doing, as well as give glimpses to other believers around the world of what God is doing in many countries.

Could you describe a particularly impactful or transformative moment during your time at the Summit? How did that experience shape your perspective and deepen your commitment to the mission? Being surrounded by the nations and hearing their stories of faith and God’s faithfulness encouraged us greatly. We were encouraged by the devotion and sacrifice of each worker at the Summit, whether we spoke with them or simply brushed shoulders with them. Meeting such workers and hearing their stories deepened our heart for our mission to capture those stories and share them in the best way we can.

What advice would you give to other young people who are considering partnering/serving with World Outreach or getting involved in missions in general? How can they overcome potential challenges and uncertainties? Our advice, as cliche as it may sound, is pray often and pray big. Earnestly seek and get to know the voice of God so that when he speaks to you, you can trust, discern, and obey! We are given a mission the moment we trust Jesus as LORD, and it is to tell people of him! Start now wherever you are! Whether that looks like moving to a new country, or staying right in your hometown, your job and command is to show and tell people about Jesus.

How has your service with World Outreach impacted your personal growth and understanding of global issues? Have there been any surprising discoveries or eye-opening experiences? Since serving with WO, we have been made more aware of how our brothers and sisters are living around the world. It was easy to think of “missionaries” as far off people with unrelatable lives since they look so different from most people, but having met so many workers now, we have been inspired and challenged simply by their character and devotion to what God has told them to do.

Looking ahead, what are your hopes and aspirations for the future, both in terms of your personal journey and your ongoing involvement with World Outreach? Our hope for the future is to continue to capture and share Kingdom stories. In doing so, we hope to encourage, challenge, connect, and support believers around the world.
