WORLDPARROTTRUSTNBWS FROM DOWN UND BR OUR AUSTRALIANPROJECT
Nearlyfour yearsagoat the Loro ParqueConventionI askedJoe Forshawto lookout for an Australianparrot conservation projectwhichmightbe suitablefor WorldParrotTrust support. He subsequently proposedthat we mightassistthework neededto sustaintheisolatedpopulationof a sub-species of theRed-tailed BlackCockatoo,Calyptorhynchus banksiigraptogyne.Thisbird occursonlyin S.W.Victoriaandin SouthAustralia.Only500to 1000 remain, andtheyarethreatenedby thelossof naturalnesttreesand BrownStringybarkforests. TheTrusthasnowmethalf the costof thisprogramfor three yearsandwehavereceived excellentreportsfrom Joe Forshaw,Dr.Bill Emisonof the VictoriaDepartmentof Conservation andNatural Resources, andfrom Wayne Caldow,a localfarmerand conservationist whois employed at keytimesof theyearto guard the knownnestsandalso encourage his fellowfarmersto preservethe ancientnesttrees. I haveto admitI washopingto visit this projectat sometime, and the opportunityoccurredwhenI wasinvitedto be a speakerat the 7th NationalAvicultural Conventionat Melbournelast March.MywifeandI arrivedin Melbourneafewdaysbeforethe convention, anddrovewestwards with JoeForshawandBill Emison to Edenhope, averypleasant farmingarearich in cockatoosand
