Parrots in the Wild Severe or Chestnut-fronted Macaw Ara severa

Photo by Armin Brockner Text by Rosemary Low This pair of Severe Macaws at their nest were photographed by Armin Brockner of Germany. He observed them in northern Venezuela in January 1995. Burning of deciduous forest has caused the macaw’s decline in this area and some trapping still occurs there. Overall, though, throughout its large range in northern South America, its numbers have not declined substantially except in western Ecuador. Severe Macaws usually nest in tall dead palm trees, where two eggs are laid.
