FOCUS ON NSOs MSA 4th MOOT - Venturing into the wilderness MAURITIUS - The 4th edition of the Mauritius Scouts Association(MSA) Moot was held from 13 to 18 December 2013. The camp whose theme was "Wild Adventure" brought together more than 200 adventurers (boys and girls 16 to 19 years) from different regions of Mauritius. The Moot was an innovative concept with a traveling camp for five days where the Scouts travelled several kilometers on foot and were called to serve the communities they went through. They also had the opportunity to discover and explore the beauty and hidden treasures of Mauritius.

"This gathering has enabled young people to live in the wild, further develop their ability to adapt, discover and develop new skills while serving the community. Community service is one of the three axis of the program for adventurer Scouts", emphasized Emmanuel Perrine, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Moot organizing committee.

Ugandan President presides over ground-breaking ceremony of Uganda Scouts' Hotel project UGANDA – On 22nd February, the Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni presided over a ground breaking ceremony of the Kampala Smart Hotel, at the Uganda Scouts Association Headquarters, Buganda road. In attendance were the Chief Scout, Professor Maggie Kigozi, the Chief Commissioner, George Onep, and the National Executive Commissioner, Richard Okello among other dignitaries and Scouting officials.

He commended the Uganda Scouts Association for its investment drive in the Hotel industry. “I thank the Uganda Scouts Movement for having woken up. This project is a good way of generating income for the Uganda Scouts Association,” he added. During the ceremony, he also launched the 2015 road map towards preparations for the Association’s Centenary Celebrations due in August 2015. The Chief Scout, Professor Maggie Kigozi commended President Museveni for accepting to conduct the ground breaking ceremony. She revealed that the ceremony was part of the Baden Powell birthday celebrations.

In addition to the traditional camp activities, the Scouts also participated in a Messenger of Peace project with vulnerable children from Black River Region where they distributed food stuffs. "This initiative demonstrates the commitment of adventurer Scouts in the Mauritian community and that we want to inspire other young people to engage in creating a better society", noted Jean Marie Gangaram, the Deputy Chair of the Moot organizing Committee.

The Uganda Scouts Association is undertaking the US $22 million hotel project in partnership with Africa Youth Empowerment. The President noted that the Scout Movement is a value based youth movement. He noted that values are very important adding that without values of personal discipline and helping colleagues, one cannot develop. He revealed that the Ministry of Education is working on a plan to ensure that the youth are skilled.

During the Moot the youth were guided by Kevin Belony, the camp leader. To him, the participants took full advantage of this adventure like no other.

President Museveni urged the Scouts to share the values of discipline with other Ugandans and stressed the need for people in the villages to embark on modern commercial agriculture.

After a few days together, it was time to depart for their respective homes. Young people were left with fully stocked address books and heads full of memories.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Africa Youth Empowerment Mr. Billy Cheung Yiu Tung said they are proud to partner with the Scouts in the hotel project. He said that an International Hotel Management Company would manage the hotel, which will sit on 10,000 square meters of space.
