Events 40th World Scout Conference/12th calendar World Scout Youth Forum KENYA - From the 9th - 10th April 2014, the World Scout Bureau Africa Regional staff and volunteers working directly with NSOs in the region went through training on the understanding of the concept of the Global Support Assessment Tool at the Regional offices. The GSAT assesses compliance of a National Scout Organization, on the national level, towards best practices in good governance and Scouting. In other terms it checks if certain processes, procedures and policies are in place and if they are being implemented. It also improves an NSOs understanding on best practices in good governance and help develop specific capacity strengthening projects. The tool is inspired by the SGS NGO Benchmarking with focus on the core Scouting business elements such as Youth Programme, Volunteers and Adult in Scouting. The training was facilitated by Abir Koubaa, Manager, NSO Capacity Strengthening, World Scout Bureau and Paul Parkinson, Global Support Team and member Asia Pacific Scout Committee and attended by Gilbert Mussumba, Africa Scout Chairperson, Dr Wayne Davis, member Africa Scout Committee, Frederic Kama Kama, Regional Director Africa Regional Office, staff and volunteers.

IVORY COAST - As part of the MoP project, “Trees For The World”, a team of 20 Scouts from Ivory Coast led by the MoP National Coordinator Marie Louise Ycossié engaged in a tree planting exercise at a Scout Camp site in Konkondékro (Bouaké).

The training was facilitated by the Adult Resources & Training Department under the Leadership of Prince Adeolu Oyelami (Leader Trainer & Deputy Camp Chief).

FROM THE REGIONAL OFFICE Taking the Messengers of Peace to the skies KENYA - It was all pomp and colour as the Regional Director Africa Scout Region presided over the graduation ceremony of the Kenya School of Flying. This 21st Private Pilot Licence graduation ceremony for the school’s pilot trainees was held at its Orly Air Park Campus on 27th April 2014.

Scouts South Africa Scouting Icon, Garnet de la Hunt Passes On SOUTH AFRICA - It is with great sadness that we announce the demise of Garnet de la Hunt, who was until the time of his death Chairman and Board Member of the National Scout Council, Scouts South Africa. He was also former Chairman of the World Scout Committee and former WSF Board Member. Before the age of 16, he received the King’s Scout badge, which is the highest obtainable award for a Scout under the age of 18. In 1976 he played a key role in uniting the four Scout Movements into one unified non- racial entity, despite the political regime of segregation. In 1977 he was elected Provincial Commissioner for the Western Cape where he then actively promoted the programmes of the single unified non-racial South African Scout Movement despite the politics of the day. In 1985 he became the Chief Scout of South Africa.

During the graduation, one of the Scout Leaders of Young Aviators Air Scouts Open Troop in Langata District, Captain Khalid Sheikh Abdulkhadir, was honoured for having broken the School’s long-standing record by being able to fly solo safely after just 7 hours of training! Two other Scout Leaders from the troop, Captain Peter Muller, and Captain Brian Muturi joined him in staging a breath taking and spectacular air show together with other selected pilots from the school. In his speech, the Regional Director challenged the graduates to maintain high levels of discipline and commitment and work towards changing the face of the very rich Africa Continents. Captain Joseph Martin, the Managing Director of the School and Hon. Clement Muchiri Wambugu, echoed the same sentiments. Captain Joseph Martin has been a great supporter of the Air Scouts Open Troop and among other support areas allowed the Air Scouts unlimited access to a large campsite adjacent to the Air Park Campus. “ This would allow the Air Scouts to have a first hand experience on flying and the workings of a plane,” Observes the delighted Group Scout Leader Captain Mercy Makau. The Kenya Scouts Association National Executive Commissioner Moses Danda, Programme Executive Josephat Gitonga and the Langata District Scout Commissioner, Habley Mugodo also attended the event. Mr. Danda lauded the troop for the good work and its potential in supporting the process of revitalising Air Scouting in Kenya. During the graduation, the Air Scouts from the open troop was at hand to offer essential services.

We will remember him as a true Leader who offered himself selflessly for the good of the Movement. Just last year in April, he received the Presidential Silver Supreme Counselor of the Order of the Baobab. The Order of the Baobab recognizes and awards people for their commitment to the uplifting and empowerment of generations and as such the development and growth of the country as a whole. This award was bestowed on him by South African President Zuma for his exceptional, inspirational volunteerism and dedication to community service and youth empowerment within the South African Scout Movement. As a member of the task force that drafted the WOSM publication "What is Scouting”, he redefined and updated Baden Powell’s fundamental values and principles that guide over 32 million children and youths in over 162 countries worldwide today. For his services to Scouting he also received other awards, amongst them the Order of the Silver Springbok, which is the highest award in South African Scouting. He also received the Order of St. Mark (Greek Orthodox), The Silver Wolf, which is an award from the Swedish Scout Association in recognition of his service to International Scouting, and the Bronze Wolf that is awarded by WOSM in recognition of his service to World Scouting. These awards are only given to people that have provided a lifetime of selfless and voluntary service to the uplifting and service of youth and country. He was a key figure within the Scout Movement on a national and international level for decades. He showed global leaders that South Africans are people with integrity, courage, tolerance, respect, determination and heart. World Scouting mourns this sad loss and convey their condolences to his family, as well as to his friends and admirers the world over and join them in paying my tribute to him.
