INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY OF TELEVISION ARTS & SCIENCES

President’s Report As an international academy, we spend a lot of time in New York. It is an international city, it’s where our headquarters are located, and for 38 years our annual International Emmy Awards Gala has been held here. The Gala in New York on the Monday before Thanksgiving is a great tradition for us and for the City, and we expect to continue it for many years to come. But starting this year, we began a longplanned initiative to move more of our events out of New York and to other places in the U.S. and around the world. In February, we held our spring Board Meeting at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. This event, at what is perhaps the world’s most impressive museum of news and journalism, was very well received. In October, we left the U.S. behind and held our fall Board Meeting in Berlin, under the auspices of ZDF German Television.

e had an outstanding program of events and speakers, including interviews with Board members Markus Schächter of ZDF and Jana Bennett of the BBC. The concluding Board dinner was held in the Basilica of the Bode Museum on Museum Island. Before and after dinner, we were given private tours of the various museums by their directors. New initiatives have become a way of life at the International Academy as we seek to keep the organization relevant in an ever-changing media landscape and to provide more events which offer up-to-date information and important networking opportunities to our members. You will see repor ts on many of this year’s events as you page through this almanac. I should particularly note the Emmy judgings which are held around the world every year. This year, 25 semi-final rounds of judging took place in 20 different cities across 15 different countries. During the year, I had the oppor tunity to travel quite widely on behalf of the International Academy, to advance our mission, meet and thank old members and promote new ones. My hosts were very gracious, and I particularly want to thank Liu Changle and his colleagues at Phoenix Satellite Television in Hong Kong, where I toured Phoenix’s new state-of-the-ar t headquar ters building; Tony Forrest, the CEO of Movie Network, and Gai Dunlop, CEO of Festcom and our ambassador in Australia for a festive and productive cocktail reception in Sydney; and Prof. Markus Schächter, the Intendant of ZDF and his colleague, Dr. Frank4

Dieter Freiling for their hospitality and many courtesies in Berlin. Next year, I hope to do more traveling on behalf of the Academy. For media professionals around the world, this is an excellent time to be associated with the International Academy. In an era of economic uncertainty and technological revolution, we have emerged as one of the best places in the media world to seek information and answers and to find colleagues with similar problems and solutions. For those reasons, our membership is strong, our finances are in excellent shape, and we work effectively with media and political leaders around the world. Our International Academy now has 600 members spread across six continents. Our members are leaders at their companies and in the industry, and our member base is constantly growing. We now run three different Emmy competitions—the Digital Emmys in April at MIPTV in partnership with Reed MIDEM; the News Emmys in September in partnership with the National Academy of Television; and, of course, the Emmys we celebrate at our Gala in November. This year, we had nearly 900 entries for these prestigious awards. I am particularly proud of the fact that during my time as President, we have increased the number of categories and award ceremonies and placed our Emmys on the cutting edge of what is going on in television around the world. During the year, I rely on the advice and counsel of many industry leaders, and I am grateful to them all. In our own organization, I particularly want to thank Fred Cohen, who is Chairman of the Academy, and Camille BidermannInternational Emmy Almanac 2010/2011

Roizen, our Senior Vice President and Executive Director. Fred is a long-time friend and devoted Fellow of the Academy and his knowledge is encyclopedic. Camille leads our very professional staff efficiently and intuitively and keeps our world-encompassing organization on track so that we can continue to serve our members and to grow. I‘d like to express my thanks to our Executive Committee, whose members work closely with me. This year Jana Bennett, Director of BBC Vision, joined the Executive Committee and has brought a very useful perspective to our discussions. Also this year, Michael Lynton of Sony Pictures Entertainment finished his term as Treasurer and was suc-

ceeded by Blair Westlake of Microsoft. I thank Michael for his help over the years and Blair for taking on this new assignment for our organization. I also want to express our thanks to our colleagues John Shaffner and Alan Perris at the Television Academy in Los Angeles; Darryl Cohen, Carolyn Grippi and Herb Granath at the National Television Academy in New York. Frank A. Bennack, Jr., the Co-Chairman of Hearst Corporation, has been an inspiration to me since he hired me at Hearst many years ago. He is deeply supportive of my activities at the Academy, and I thank him for that and for the many contributions he has made to improve life in New York City for those of us who live here. For the Academy, as for all of us, the years ahead will be challenging. The world is changing. Our business is changing. And we have to run a lot harder just to stay in place. I believe this organization will thrive in the years ahead, and I look forward to the challenges and the opportunities.

Paula Kerger President & CEO Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) What does being the Gala Chair mean to you? I am honored to act as the Gala Chair this year and have the opportunity to honor some of the most talented individuals in our field. Having served on the International Academy’s Board of Directors for many years, I believe it’s the Academy’s privilege and its mission to shine a spotlight on the world’s best storytellers, technicians and artists who can bring people together with something compelling to show the world.

as a fundraiser and advocate for public media. Being able to say “yes” to as many great ideas as possible is the challenge and opportunity that drives me.

How important is the international marketplace for PBS? While PBS’ focus is serving the American public, increasingly the media landscape is a global one. We have always sought the world over for content of every genre that is truly outstanding. Digital platforms are making it easier for us to find and showcase talented producers wherever they are. What are the biggest challenges and opportunities for PBS in the coming years? Media is changing with lightning speed, providing us with ways to serve the public in ways we never dreamed were possible just a few years ago. The challenge we face is finding the resources to match our ambitions. PBS is transforming into a multiplatform leader that serves Americans through television, mobile, the Web, and even inter active whiteboards in the classroom. Even in this challenging economy, we are moving forward on important initiatives that build on our commitment to children, democracy and arts and culture in the broadcast and digital-media arenas. But I’m often thinking about the project we weren’t able to do because of funding, which is an important motivator for me 8

Captain Wolf Larsen, the notorious Sea Wolf who has spent his entire life at sea, rules the crew of his ship with an iron fist. A man of great intelligence, he has no problem manipulating and bullying people to better serve his needs. Despite his internal strength, Larsen at times shows signs of weakness and depression. He is envious of his brother, Death, with whom he is in a race for the highly treasured seal-hunting grounds, because Death is simpleminded and able to enjoy life unburdened.

Sid Lucero portrays Alfred (Red) Ramirez, the antagonist to the show’s starcrossed lovers, Angel and Miguel. Red feels he never gets what he wants—his dream of becoming a lawyer, the attention of his adoptive mother, or the affection of Angel, the woman he has always loved—which has led him to develop a strong and resilient personality.

The serial killer is a splitpersonality psychopath, whose reflection in the mirror has the upper hand and is the brain, while the body is the executer. He has a sinister past and is obsessed with images, killing for the pleasure of creating portraits that, in his deranged mind, are works of art. He channels this obsession through the camera’s lens, and his determination to re-enact crimes of the past is essentially a graphic-artistic motivation.

re-create and adapt this to multiple platforms in countries in Latin America, Europe and Asia. Specifically in Korea, Japan, Turkey and India, in their own languages. GREGG: What are some of the differences in marketing and selling a telenovela today as opposed to five years ago? CAPRILES: Marketing campaigns have adapted to many platforms. People are not watching telenovelas five years ago like they are watching them today. We are experiencing now in many countries where telenovelas are being watched in VOD platforms, on mobiles and with that, campaigns doing more promotion, engaging more audiences to the free TV. you can point to and say,“This was our most innovative idea and this is what had the biggest results” or is there something like that you can share with us, in any country, or any media? A specific marketing action that you did in a country that had some kind of immediate result? NASHIV: Well I think that launching a series with a visual of a woman standing up in a toilet, peeing like a man, generated a lot of talk and interest in the series and after it went on air we did certain campaigns to encourage the issue of picking up on people behind the scenes. We launched video clips on the Internet of testimonials of women talking about the problems of being a woman in the world of men.The idea of Lalola is groundbreaking and we tried to make all of our marketing campaigns the same.

eight countries that pre-purchased the program before we even started to produce it. We just kept investing heavily in marketing because we knew that we had a golden egg in our hands. The telenovela marketers tend to put the marketing efforts in the few telenovelas they have to bring to the market, they bring the new one to the market. We have to put all of our efforts on one item, on one series, and of course it had more exposure and more money spent on the marketing. In every market we only promote one item and put all of the heavy marketing spending on just one thing.

AUDIENCE QUESTION: I noticed that Telemundo said that you have pre-paid subscribers on the Internet and this is how you’re opening all of your telenovelas or just specific ones? We usually go with the top ones, mostly in countries where these technologies and people are used to pre-paid Internet subscription. It’s what we’re doing a lot in Spain at this point and also in Japan. But it depends also on the content and what is being marketed. The main thing to remember here is for Telemundo to have presence on the screen we go the other way around. For the success of our content on this screen for a long version of a telenovela we usually reduce it, put it on premium content, promote it, and then we have pre-paid persons subscribing to that platform. working. I think the telenovela genre has been able to create a unique relationship between the broadcaster and the viewer and that used to be on a [word-ofmouth] basis. People used to go to work the day after and star t talking about what happened in the episode the day before. We were experimenting with something in Brazil with one of our recent titles, while the first episode was being aired people were exchanging impressions by tweeting. The day after, the press gave their impression of the content but also reflected on what viewers had already expressed on the Internet. In terms of promoting, or giving the audience the chance to express themselves, social media is a mandator y ele ment, that is now par t of the content while it’s building. We are exchanging people’s impressions, feelings, thoughts, and critiques. It’s tough to do it in your own market and it’s even more difficult to do it when you go overseas to convince buyers to buy your title. It evolves with every product and year and the way you address it really depends on the content.

AUDIENCE QUESTION: I’d like each of you to share with us the biggest lesson you learned from something that wasn’t so successful as these examples. GREGG: One of the challenges we face at The Bold & The Beautiful is getting the marketers and writers working in sync. On the Internet we’re starting to see that the content we put up has to do with what the writers have written. As a result, there’s a blurring of reality and fantasy, so we have to be careful about the writing. Have you guys experienced anything where things start blurring in terms of reality and fantasy because of the Internet? NETTO: Yes. In Brazil we write and produce as an open story. We have had failures; it’s part of the game and of the overall learning process of a company to experiment. When you put yourself in an experimentation process, you’re going to learn and you’re going to have failures. An advantage of this kind of show is that it is an open story; you have the chance and the ability, as long as you have the talent and the willingness, to rethink the content. We have gone through many telenovelas that we have had to change in the middle in order to respond to what the audience was giving us feedback about. Nowadays our toughest competitor is the local production. The market is changing and evolving so fast that I think we have to be open to experiments in order to be successful and learn, and perhaps we will have one failure out of ten. This is an experiment that we go through when we are writing and airing in Brazil and when we bring the content to the international market. CAPRILES: At Telemundo, we have constant feedback and interaction with international clients, which gives us a clear vision of what the audience wants. You get to learn and adapt and then you offer whatever the audience wants. Failures become more and more of an issue as time goes by. NASHIV: At Dori Media, we don’t produce to a local channel, we produce to the world, so our clients are buyers from all over the world and we like to test the new productions with them before we start production. We are online with the clients from all over the world getting their feedback before we even start the whole process of production in order not to come to the market with surprises.

“The way we see it at Telemundo it’s a 360 content strategy, ” —Luis Daniel Capriles

GREGG: How closely do you work with the broadcasters? CAPRILES: Very close on our side. For Telemundo, there is constant synergy in the marketing and digital depar tments. Telemundo Internacional has a very close relationship with the producers to adapt to every single market International Emmy Almanac 2010/2011

so our cast and our producers don’t come from a cer tain region, but from many regions. NASHIV: We believe that the success of the content in different countries is our success. It’s not that we sell the programs and that we just forget about them; we are in close contact with the buyers. For those who buy the format, our production people go to the countries and consult the local production team and work with them on the production to make it as successful as possible. NETTO: In our case, Globo is the greatest producer and the leading broadcaster in Brazil. What we have learned from being in an international market is that you can do content that is aimed at a specific broadcasting need without losing the sensibility of other opportunities internationally. We have some examples like Terra Nostra, El Clon and India—A Love Story, which gave us the opportunity to create titles that were bigger than Brazil. I think what’s most important is that we follow what they are producing, but we don’t interfere, we contribute to the process, while the creator still has the flexibility to create. Our main job internally is to show them that there is opportunity around the world, that there are challenges, and that they can learn from these new experiences. GREGG: If you had to choose one particular marketing technique that is your favorite or that you feel like is the most effective, and say you had a budget cut and suddenly they said you could only do one out of the ten, which one would you choose? When your show is on the air, its getting ready to go on, how do you launch with one technique if you had to? NETTO: In our case, it’s our own programming grid. It’s the strength of the brand and the relationship with the audience and your content, to bring it closer to them. 32

“One of the challenges we face at The Bold & The Beautiful is getting the marketers and writers working in sync” —David Gregg

CAPRILES: In our case, we have a strong relationship with NBC as a partner company and cross-promotions are key for these specifics. It doesn’t matter how short they are, but it’s always cross-promotions. NASHIV: I think it depends on the target audience of the programs. If its teens, we’ll never go on air, we’ll do something on the Internet or use a media that suits them better than TV. This makes them more involved in the program. If it’s an adult program, probably still TV.

FEBRUARY BOARD MEETING PANEL IN wAshINGTON D.c.

Special Report on Haiti February 26, Newseum, Washington DC Panelists: Rob Reynolds, Senior Washington Correspondent, Al Jazeera English; Simon Wilson, Washington Bureau Chief, BBC News

East. We’ve been through all sorts of things together. This was a completely raw disaster and they were going to come across scenes where you weren’t going to be able to say, “Quick, get an army medic to this guy, ” or, “Look just pick up the phone, tell the Israelis that they’ve got to get these guys out,” or something like that. They were going to have to make really tough decisions on the ground:“Do we film it?”“Do we tell the story?”“Or do we get involved?” And I think this was a fascinating challenge for all of us, which was, to what extent on this story did we adapt our normal custom and practice for correspondent involvement in a story. And I think there are no rights and wrongs about this. But I was just fascinated, as someone who works in the medium, and studies it, just to watch how the different organizations handled this. CNN, it was an astonishing logistical act to get the numbers of people they got there and then the way they were operating. [They] quite quickly got very heavy presenter and correspondent involvement in the story and Sanjay Gupta becoming a doctor again. I’m sure we all had different views about what we think about it. Who am I, or any of us, to judge the decisions he was making in those circumstances. The BBC traditionally has been a little standoffish on that kind of correspondent involvement. But

WILSON: I can’t remember a story of this obvious magnitude where we knew so little in those first hours and days. I mean the first challenge was just simply gauging the magnitude of it. It was obvious something had happened and I now realize, and I hadn’t been to Haiti before, I didn’t have a sort of background that would have been useful to me. It was a pretty unique thing. Many of us have dealt with earthquakes and been involved in conflict reporting. But there’s almost always, however desperate the situation, a kind of base of organization in the country you’re deploying into, a government, a police force, an army, a hospital system, something on which you can begin to base your reporting. And in those first hours and days there was just nothing and there were people within our organization saying, “Ah, you know maybe this is a lot of fuss about nothing,” you know the way one talks amongst journalists, obviously it was a tragedy on some scale, a couple of thousand dead.We simply didn’t know, because as we now know, there was virtually no organization on the ground. So that was the first challenge it posed us. And it very quickly became apparent that more than normal we bore a huge responsibility for the situation we were sending our people into. They would have to be completely selfsufficient for the first few days. There was virtually nowhere to stay, no electricity, and very limited communications. And perhaps the biggest challenge of all was going to be the psychological one, even for our most experienced people. Our lead correspondent on those first few days was Matthew Price, our New York correspondent who’s a veteran Rob Reynolds, Senior Washington Correspondent, Al Jazeera English, and Simon Wilson, Washington with me of the Middle Bureau Chief, BBC News International Emmy Almanac 2010/2011

we had to adapt. And as I said, in that first week, I was managing our operation but not there myself, but in pretty constant contact with our lead correspondent. I got a call from Matthew saying, “You know we’re out filming, we’re in a neighborhood, doing a story on the neighborhood. This woman just collapsed in front of us, she was pregnant, she fainted, and we had to make a decision and we put her in the car, took her to hospital.” And whatever was left of the hospital there, there was a doctor, they found a doctor, it was a breach birth, which no one had known, and the doctor said she wouldn’t have survived if the BBC team hadn’t done that. And they then wrestled with the decision of what story to make of that incident. And they cut a story which I like, I think it’s a very powerful story, which told the story of what they did, but deliberately didn’t include a single shot of what had actually happened, which was our correspondent helping to pick up a woman and put her into a car.We reported that we were there, she fell ill, we put her into our car, took her to hospital, but deliberately left out the shots. But each news organization, I’m sure Rob as well, was making their own decisions about that sort of thing. So that was challenge number three. And then I think challenge number four,

and there are no doubt many, many more, is how do we cover this now? How do we continue to cover this? We’ve taken a decision at very high levels of the BBC to remain committed, to commit money, to commit resources, to commit personnel in lean times that we’re all going through. But it’s interesting; already last week was a good example. There were some really strong news lines out of Haiti last week; you know the first rains, the beginnings of bad diseases, further lines on adoptions and orphans. And we were really struggling, really struggling, to get our editors to take the story. So on the news gathering side of things, where I work, we’re committing to keeping the resources there, a quarter of a million people more or less died, this is a huge test for the international community. But already it’s tough and it’s hard to get the stories on, and I think that’s something that’s going to be a big challenge for us. REYNOLDS: Well, we decided right on the day that the earthquake struck that this was going to be a major story. Al Jazeera English had been to Haiti many times before that covering various aspects of what had been going on there. We had done a week of live broadcasts from there several years ago, and a lot of our correspondents from the region had been there. I was fortunate

enough to go there in 1995, when President Aristide, having been kicked out with the help of one American administration, was then put back in with the help of another American administration and then was later on ejected with the help of yet another American administration. And while I was there, I really fell in love with this country which is so tragic and poverty stricken, but yet had such a proud history, a very interesting history and traditions and the people who are amazingly spirited, spiritual, self-reliant and resilient and who have had to deal with so many things that people in rich societies could ever deal with, and I’m talking about even before the earthquake struck. But I kept thinking while I was there what would happen if an earthquake or some disaster like that hit Fairfax County,Virginia, or Westchester County, New York, and everything was destroyed and then no one came to help. How would we have coped with that? Would we have been able to survive? And the Haitians were really able to survive because of their resilience, and so we decided we wanted to focus less on heroic search and rescue teams coming from outside of the country to help or the involvement of western doctors or anything like that and really try as much as possible to portray it from the point of view of the Haitian people and try to get Haitians voices into every story. And one story was similar to what you were talking about Simon. One of our correspondents, Mike Kirsch, was out with our cameraman Gordon Derman and came across a scene in a neighborhood where a little boy was trapped in the rubble and had been in there for several days and the neighbors were digging him out with I think

they had hammer and a crow bar—that was it, they didn’t have any specialized equipment. So they got this little boy out and rushed him to the Cuban hospital and he survived. And it was quite striking how people were going about their daily business and going about helping one another and not really even waiting for help. Nevertheless, the story of the uncoordinated response to the disaster became very important, there were controversies over the U.S. military control of the airport and what sort of cargo they were letting in and there was a great deal of talk about security. One of the things that we tried to do was to explain what this meant about security. I think a lot of the Western media, mainstream media, talked about security as if all of the Haitian people were going to turn into a violent mob. And if anyone came out with a bag of food, they’d grab it and tear it up, and some of that did happen. But by and large when the aid agencies were talking about the need for security, they weren’t talking about their own security, they weren’t worried about being harmed by Haitian people or anything like that. They were worried about the fact that when food is distributed it tends to be the younger and stronger guys who go and get the food and then the women and the old folks and the kids don’t get any. So they had to organize that. I think this mantra about security, violence, looting, robbing, became a real theme in a lot of Western media coverage—not BBC—but it was unwarranted because really if you look at the response of people in Port-Au-Prince and compare it to say Los Angeles after Rodney King or Baghdad after the American invasion, there was nothing

like any kind of lawlessness there. The difficulties of covering it, much as you said Simon, the communications were ridiculously poor, and you go in with S.A.T. phones and you go in with B.G.A.N.s, which is a small portable television satellite transmitter, and cell phones and all that and you’re going to find that most of it just doesn’t work, for whatever reason. At one point we were reduced to one phone that could text other people. So that was really hard because we are all so reliant on this stuff now. I think in earlier days people probably wouldn’t have thought that they needed to coordinate everything with their desk so much and they would just get on with it. But we’re used to that way of working now.The living conditions were not that bad. We brought some tents and we brought some food from the Dominican Republic and we brought enough stuff to stay alive with. By and by things got better and hotels opened up and you could get just about anything you needed. To your point about the sort of psychological effect, I think one thing that was really hard for me and some of our colleagues was that beyond seeing very disturbing scenes like death, mass graves, people who are hungry, and so on, people that are hurt, it was that people were coming to us personally all the time and saying: “Please help me,”“Can you get me some food?”“Can you get me a job?” and “I’m hungry.”You can’t provide aid to everyone just as an individual, so a lot got a little burned out by having to deal with that all the time and having to essentially say, “No I’m working right now and I can’t help you.” So that was pretty tough. And again it’s a fabulous country, it’s always portrayed as this hell hole and from one perspective it is, but the people are really, really great. I remember one month after the earthquake there was this celebration down by the presidential palace, which is, as you’ve seen, like a wedding cake that’s been stepped on, completely destroyed, people were dancing, singing, giving speeches and sermons, and there was just such a feeling of we’re not going to lay down and die we’re going to go ahead. That was just very impressive to me. QUESTION: Haiti is in a fairly wealthy neighborhood geographically. Why is it not wealthy? What has happened in the development of Haiti that has made it different? REYNOLDS: Historically, going back to 1791, there was a slave uprising against the French, which resulted in the destruction in most of the French plantations down there. Then there was a se40

ries of civil wars and power struggles. This is something no Americans know but every Haitian knew: Napoleon sent a huge army to take back Haiti as a first step to setting up a big North American empire because the French had what was called Louisiana then which went all the way to Montana or something. So he said first of all I’ll take back our San Domingo colony and subdue those pesky Haitians and then we’ll go on to have this North American empire. The French came and none of them left, they were all killed by the Haitians and by yellow fever. So Napoleon said, okay, forget that. I’m selling this North American thing, and that was the Louisiana Purchase, he sold it to Thomas Jefferson. So if the Haitians hadn’t made that stand against Napoleon our country might be different, but that’s a digression. So they then had to pay this huge indemnity to the French in order to be accepted in the community of nations. And they were never accepted in the community of nations because they were rebellious slaves. And the United States didn’t recognize them until Abraham Lincoln was President in the middle of the Civil War. The countries of Latin America feared them as an example of slaves striking for their own freedom. So they were very isolated. They weren’t a part of international trade; they suffer from very poor government, no question about it. There’s a racial division between people who are strictly of African origin and then people who are mixed African and Caucasian or European origin, and the small group of lighter-skin people have for years controlled the trade and commerce and all of the wealth in the country. And then the country was completely environmentally degraded too because everywhere you go, even now, you see ladies walking around with these gigantic sacks of charcoal on their heads, that’s what they use to cook everything. And so they deforested the entire country with these small slash and burn farms and agriculture. It became a real disaster. You can fly over and see on the line, where the Dominican Republican is, it’s lush and leafy and there’s cactus on the Haitian side. And they’re constantly a plaything of American power politics in the region. They were occupied by the American Marines for 19 years in the first part of the 20th century, became this pawn when Cuba went to Castro, Duvalier was always extorting money from the U.S. to fight communism and so on. It was a cold war cockpit, like a lot of other countries in the less developed world, and that all these things together really set the country back. And since there is so little infrastructure and caInternational Emmy Almanac 2010/2011

How is it that This is a really difficult comparison to make, and I make it caua story like this grabs this much attention? tiously. I spent a lot of time in the Middle East, and I was struck REYNOLDS: Well I think for the United States-based media, it’s time and time again during my time in Haiti of the little similaribecause it’s in the backyard. I think there’s a certain feeling of guilt ties to Gaza. Partly because, it’s obviously a completely different that a country as wealthy as the United States can exist with a situation and for completely different reasons, but partly for sucountry that is just in total destitution, 300 miles away. And I think perficial reasons that an earthquake is not actually unlike the kind the rest of the world just saw it as a disaster and a human drama, of damage you get from air strikes and stuff. One building falls and especially because it’s a place that is always afflicted. It’s like down the next one is standing and all of that. It was just talking the Book of Job there every day. And there will be a hurricane, and to the people, as Rob has just outlined very clearly, these wonthen something else will happen, AIDS, disease, whatever, it’s just derful, welcoming, under the most terrible of circumstances, a place that can’t get a break. And I think there was a certain inwanting you to feel that they’re proud to be Haitian, and proud terest in that as well. of what they achieve under these difficult circumstances and WILSON: I think these are always complicated by lots of faccome and share what little we have. It was profoundly moving, but ultimately very sad. The encampments were beginning to look like shanty towns and what had been houses were tin roofs and the cardboard walls were replaced by wood and you thought, “people are going to be living there for years” (in these really squalid encampments). had been anything even approaching it in that area. It was really out of the blue.

It’s going to be a lot of money involved in that kind of drug trade. That’s the kind of thing that I think audiences will be interested to hear. I think as well just continuing to chart the extraordinary challenges facing the people of Haiti, it will open our audience to other things that they didn’t know they needed to know. REYNOLDS: I agree with what you said Simon, especially that there’s no requirement to keep telling the story if you’ve told it already, but do you come back to visit it from time to time to see how things have developed; whether predictions that were made publicly have been fulfilled or if promises have been fulfilled. And you now have people around the world whose interest has been piqued by this, and they would like to know how things are going. They would like to revisit it from time to time. And as you say, there are a lot of great stories, the drug trade is one. Our correspondent there, Steve Chou, this week went to an orphanage where the conditions were so horrendous we made that our lead story during several of our news hours. So there’s a lot more you can find, but the normal course for a story

QUESTION: How do you, as news gatherers, deal with that challenge of keeping the course of this story going and creating new story lines and making things like rebuilding sewers interesting? WILSON: I’ve always been really quite clear on this in the sense that I don’t think we have a responsibility per se to keep a story going just because it would help generate funds and charity and that sort of thing. That’s not our job. But I think what we have is a huge responsibility to our audiences, which is we have built up an expectation that we will tell them what’s happening there. BBC and other broadcasters have a role in the immediacy of the time and just providing the basic information people need to make judgments of: Am I going to give money? Am I going to help? Am I going to offer my services? I just think we have a huge responsibility to our audiences. Individual editors on a given day [may have] to stack it up against the ten leading stories. But ultimately, it boils down to good journalism. But just this morning I was talking to our next team going in and just saying, What kinds of stories should we be looking at? We need to keep going with the obvious stuff, the reconstruction, the governance, the role of the aid agencies, and The U.N. But I think there are lots of ways this opens a door, after there has been this much coverage of a place. I learned fascinating things about Haiti I didn’t know. I didn’t know the extent to which it’s used as a midway point for the delivery of drugs from South America into the U.S. and sometimes on to Europe. And Academy Member Marlon Quintero,VP Development & Current Programs, Sony Pictures Television, the security people who with Zhengzhul Liu, Phoenix Satellite Television Washington Bureau Chief popped up at the time of the earthquake. It is obvious that the like this is for a lot of attention to be paid at the outset. But I think United States, the Drug Enforcement Agency, sees this actually as a lot of it declines, I think you don’t just drop it all together. You a big opportunity for them to really make a change. And I think keep coming back and revisiting it and seeing how things are that will be fascinating to see.Th drugs gangs, who are very influgoing because you do have a responsibility to your audience to ential in Haiti, had their own airstrip in the middle of the Cité Soleil keep tabs on things. slum, which was a no-go area for anybody—they had their own airstrip with drugs coming in from Central and South America, QUESTION:What is going to happen with all of that money? being broken down into smaller speed boats and being sent on REYNOLDS: The pledges and all that? Well that’s one of the big to the States. Now, that’s not happening at the moment, because things to follow and to see how well that money is being spent. that whole thing broke down and the gang leaders were killed, There was a story about the American Red Cross having gotten others who were in prison got out. And I think this is where some in several hundred million of dollars and spending 18 million. And of the stories...I’ll put our hands up, in the BBC world, our hands they were defending themselves saying, “Well we can’t spend it weren’t clean. We went down some of the routes that Rob adall at once,” so on and so forth. There’s a debate over whether the vised against, of predicting violence. We shouldn’t be predicting government is capable of handling this or if the government is stuff on air, but there’s absolutely a story to watch there, which is, both too weak and too corrupt to handle money. And then Will whatever government emerges there be able to control that? there’s a debate as to why the government is so weak and isn’t International Emmy Almanac 2010/2011

one of the reasons the government is so incapable because all of its functions have been taken over by foreign NGOs and the United Nations and other people have allowed the Haitian state to wither away to nothing. And then there are questions about whether the money is being spent responsibly and whether there is corruption and if it’s being allocated for the right things. WILSON: I think in these sorts of events there are pledges of money that if you go back a few years later you found out never materialized. In my experience, this giving money by text, this was the first really big test of this. In the past, mainly governments would pledge money, there would be these figures of billions of dollars floating around and if you ever actually went back and said, “what happened to that?” “Oh, well you know we didn’t know how to spend it and then something else happened.” But this is real money, people were texting like a million dollars a day or something, and that’s real money. The American Red Cross has got that in their bank account. QUESTION: How is the radio, TV and mobile infrastructure now? REYNOLDS: You’ve got cell coverage now. You have much better telecommunications now. Before, I had heard that wealthy people or companies would set up their own cell tower. So it was really chaotic and hard to get a decent signal. But there’s a company called Digicell that is everywhere in Haiti, in Port-AuPrince anyway, and they’re blanketing the place with their products and it’s not that bad anymore. WILSON: I don’t know if you found the same Rob, but it was virtually impossible in those first days and weeks to make a phone call out. And yet, some texts and some emails made it

out. And it was almost like a BlackBerry story. We had this extraordinary situation where we couldn’t talk to our guys on the ground, and they couldn’t talk to us and when I went in I couldn’t often talk to London. But you could absolutely text, almost throughout, from day one. Some extraordinary anecdotal things happened. I mean at one point one of our guys came to a place where there were 20 students at a nursing home trapped in the basement alive and he somehow got a voice. My iPhone rang. And he was like,“Simon, it’s Matthew, I’ve got this story, I can’t get through to London at all, I can only call you because you’re on AT&T. Can you call London and tell them that we’ve got this story and put a bit of copy in the system?” At the back of my mind I remember that the iPhone has some sort of conferencing facilities. So I said, “Okay hang on a minute, stay on the line.” And I’m going through the menus and I find this thing that says merge calls. So I call our intake desk in London and say, “Look, I’ve got Matthew Price, I know no one’s heard from him in two days but he’s got a great story, I’m going to try and merge the calls.” And somehow it worked and two minutes later I look up at BBC World and there’s Matthew Price Haiti reporting live and my iPhone is sitting on the desk in Washington. Of course we’re all used to being in contact with our desks all the time, but actually, I have to say there’s a little bit of me, it was absolute bliss that London couldn’t call you. And what you do is once an hour you email them saying, “Here’s the update, here’s what we’re all doing, send me an email if you don’t like any of this.” It put control back to the team in the field in a way that probably hasn’t happened for ten years. REYNOLDS: That’s exactly right. And if you think trying to reach London was tough, try calling Doha.
