WORLD VIEW
BY MANSHA DASWANI
Accelerating Change In February, when COVID-19 was upending everyday life in China and Hong Kong but pretty much nowhere else, Conviva declared 2020 was going to be the “year of streaming media,” setting the stage for a “titanic shift” in the decade ahead. Lockdown measures across the globe saw streaming surge in April before moderating somewhat. But even as some countries were able to return to a version of normal, streaming was up by 58 percent and 49 percent in May and June, respectively, compared to last year. Streaming is taking over in many markets and the pandemic has only sped that up. “Record-high households have dropped their cable or satellite TV package as more streaming platforms have entered the fray,” PwC said in a recent Deals Insights report. “While the return of live sports will draw some viewers back, COVID-19 has clearly accelerated the disruption, with many households opting for multiple streamers at a lower total cost than their cable package.” I’m reconsidering my cable package, mostly because I feel like that ecosystem is abandoning me, and not the other way around. For years I have kept cable mostly for news and sports (and I happen to like random channel surfing). My news channels are still there for me, but I recently discovered I would need three separate subscriptions (Peacock, ESPN+ and CBS All Access) to watch Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League—three! The movement of sports to the streaming space is likely to completely upend the economics of that sector going forward (which, given the Netflix effect on drama and kids’ programming, should not come as a surprise). A titanic shift indeed. 6 WORLD SCREEN 8/20

All Creatures Great and Small is a new adaptation of a series of best-selling novels about a young Scottish vet working in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. Produced by Callender’s Playground, the show preserves the rich spirit, tone and values of James Herriot’s iconic characters and the stories are set in the picturesque English countryside. The expertly crafted series takes us back to the 1930s, evoking memories of a simpler time. As Callender notes, “The whole point of revisiting the series was that we felt that there was an appetite for harking back to days gone by, a time when family and community were the sort of core values at the heart of life. We felt there was a way to make it work

for a contemporary audience, that the psychological underpinning of the characters could be further explored. We felt that the role of women in this society could be dramatized more fully and had the opportunity to shoot in glorious high-definition technology, which brings the world of the Yorkshire Dales to life in a fresh way. There’s also a tremendous amount of gentle humor. Perhaps most of all, I remember with great affection the days as a family when 8/20 WORLD SCREEN 11

And my feeling was that audiences want that, and that’s clearly what’s happened during the lockdown.” The narrative follows James Herriot (Nicholas Ralph’s screen debut) as he embarks on his dream of becoming a vet. Samuel West (Mr Selfridge, On Chesil Beach) joins as Siegfried Farnon, the wonderfully eccentric veterinary surgeon who reluctantly hires the recently qualified Herriot. resh out of its most-watched second quarter in over a decade, Crown Media Family Networks has unveiled a bevy of highlights from its upcoming roster of holiday programming. Indeed, Hallmark Channel’s Countdown to Christmas and sister network Hallmark Movies & Mysteries’ holiday franchise, Miracles of Christmas, have become calendar staples for audiences in the U.S., drawing nearly 85 million unduplicated viewers each year. For the global marketplace, Crown Media International Distribution will offer all-new original movies that are part of Hallmark’s record-breaking Countdown to Christmas annual event. “International viewers have cozied up to Hallmark holiday movies,” says Francisco J. González, senior VP of international distribution. “Each year we see more territories and networks showcasing this lineup.” But of course, the overall offering is much bigger than holiday. Hallmark has a highly popular slate of original romantic comedy movies, which have a large following around the globe. “At the heart of these movies—shot all over the world, from Iceland to Rome to Vienna—are fun, compelling storylines that keep our viewers coming back for more,” González says. And Hallmark Signature Mystery Series also continue to perform strongly in the international market. “The winning formula behind our mystery programming is the intriguing plots and undeniable chemistry between the leads.” 8/20 WORLD SCREEN 15

tarting from a radio station in Manila in 1950, GMA Network has evolved into a broadcast giant that provides audiences across the Philippines as well as around the world with top-flight programming, maintaining a leading position in the marketplace. This means there’s much to celebrate with its 70th anniversary. GMA Network’s programming has been sold around the world, and the deal-making continued over the last few months amid the coronavirus pandemic. “Buyers continue to look for fresh content that will draw and maintain viewership,” says Roxanne J. Barcelona, VP of GMA Network’s worldwide division. “GMA has an extensive library of content assets that provide solutions to help programmers continue to excite and engage their viewers.” Traditional dramas, with themes focused on betrayal and revenge, continue to prove popular with partners in key territories such as Southeast Asia and Latin America, according to Barcelona. “However, there is an increased interest in nontraditional dramas with themes like crime, the supernatural and suspense. We find that the audience is attracted to these themes because of the intrigue and controversies, the thrill and excitement that our dramas have. These become a form of escape for viewers, especially during this time of a global pandemic.” Among the dramas that GMA Network has recently licensed in Southeast Asia and Latin America are A Place in Your Heart, Ysabel and The Half Sisters. “We believe that GMA dramas appeal to many viewers looking for themes that revolve around modern-day issues that affect society, give hope and touch the hearts of viewers,” says Barcelona. Alongside successfully exporting its programming around the globe, there have been many milestones for GMA Network over 8/20 WORLD SCREEN 21

the last 70 years. “Reaching seven decades is not an easy feat for any company in any industry,” says Felipe L. Gozon, chairman and CEO of GMA Network. “Needless to say, there were many challenges along the way, but we are very proud of what we have achieved so far through our people’s dedication and our commitment to genuine public service. “Aside from being the Philippines’ largest TV network in terms of stations and reach, GMA has also cemented its position as the country’s leading and most trusted in the industry with numerous

recognitions here and abroad,” he continues. “We, however, do not rest on our laurels as we continuously strive to deliver only the best for our stakeholders, our beloved Kapuso, because that is what they deserve. In time for our 70th anniversary celebration, we unveiled our own digital TV receiver, the GMA Affordabox, as well as our new digital channel, dubbed Heart of Asia.” As the network aspires to drive the migration from analog to digital viewing in the country, the company has developed the GMA Affordabox, which was specifically made to become accessible to millions of Filipino households. “On top of its very 22 WORLD SCREEN 8/20

This type of innovation is part of what has helped to keep GMA in its market-leading position throughout the years. “In order to maintain our lead and surpass our own achievements, we continue to evolve in content, platforms, technology and work process,” says Gozon. “Over the years, we have produced many game-changing and innovative programs and projects that created an impact in the TV industry and even, to a certain extent, in the Filipino culture. “We continue to provide our viewers with a healthy balance of credible and relevant news and public-affairs programming as well as meaningful storylines for entertainment,” he adds. “At GMA, quality is part of our daily drill, as we believe that quality content wins, no matter the platform.” 8/20 WORLD SCREEN 23

ndent S pirit Scott J. Jones, the president of Artist View Entertainment, reflects on 30 years of building relationships. By Kristin Brzoznowski hen Scott J. Jones launched Artist View Entertainment back in September 1991, he did so with the aim to establish a fair alternative for independents working in the movie business and has since worked to cultivate the lasting relationships that form the bedrock of much of its dealings today. “I wanted to build a company that was based on repeat business,” says Jones. “Where we sit in the business is, we know the people who make the movies and we know the people who buy the movies. Producers are pretty resilient, and if it’s their passion, they continuously find ways to get their next movie made and the next one after that. My idea was, if I could be a safe home for them always to know they’ve got their distribution in place, that would make my life easier! From one movie to the next, you also hope that their films get better, so the idea was that as their movies got better, we got better product. We wanted to build slowly but surely in that way. “We have so many customers who have come back over the years; it’s probably the thing that I’m most proud of,” Jones says. “I have represented ten or more projects from at least eight to ten different production companies.”

Every year has been a milestone, he says, but earning clients’ ongoing business has been an important element in Artist View’s survival. While the company has never had any “big home runs,” it has made it work by hitting “a lot of singles and doubles,” according to Jones. And it has done so on the back of a diverse catalog. “Our ‘niche’ is…we don’t have one,” he says. “Why would I want Artist View to be known as ‘the sci-fi distributor’ or the ‘family movie distributor’ when you could have a certain number of years when one genre could be in vogue and

then nobody wants it anymore,” he continues. “Part of our longevity is in having a diverse catalog.” In the absence of physical markets to attend at the moment, Artist View is focused on increasing its presence in the world of social media and making strategic announcements to the marketplace as it acquires new content. “We will continue to acquire and represent films that we feel have a place in today’s world,” says Jones. “We are also developing projects at a pitch and fully completed script level that we will be presenting to key accounts who prebuy projects.” 30 WORLD SCREEN 8/20

new player in the international market, SynProNize is built around the three pillars that inspired its name: syndication, production and monetization. The company was co-founded by industry alums Nitin Michael and Hasnaa Descuns, who shared a desire to find a new way of approaching the content business. “While working in the Middle East and Africa, we realized that there were many channels and platforms that required competent resources, or partners, to help them efficiently acquire or produce content and subsequently monetize it in a strategic way to ensure maximum returns,” Michael explains. “Additionally, there was a strong desire among local creators for their content to travel across to other markets. We felt that there was a need for a professional agency that could help potential partners make the most from their content. We also felt that there was room for SynProNize to facilitate a mutually beneficial relationship between individuals or companies looking to invest in content as well as content creators and producers who are looking at getting their cash flows financed.” Syndication is the company’s initial focus, Descuns explains. “We are looking at licensing content from the Middle East,
