WORLD VIEW
BY MANSHA DASWANI
The COVID-19 Bubble Stay-at-home measures have been very good for SVOD platforms. According to Deloitte’s latest Digital Media Trends Survey, 23 percent of U.S. consumers added a streaming video service subscription since the start of the pandemic. U.S. subs are now paying for an average of four services—I’m one of them—up from three before COVID-19. I honestly don’t know what I would have done over the last few months without Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu and Disney+. (I very much want to watch HBO Max, but it not being on any of the connected devices I use is proving to be a massive hindrance.) Signing up a new customer—especially if there’s a free trial—is perhaps the easy part. Keeping them is more of a challenge. Per Deloitte, since the start of the global health crisis, 17 percent of subs canceled a paid service. And according to Parks Associates, the churn rate among OTT services in the U.S. rose from 35 percent in Q1 2019 to 41 percent in Q1 2020. The question for customers becomes: what’s a must-have, and what’s a nice-to-have? Every time I think about dropping Disney+ it gives me a reason to stay (Hamilton! Beyoncé’s Black Is King!) And I have far too many favorites on Netflix, Hulu and Amazon to even consider leaving. But it won’t be easy for platforms in the months ahead as they face continued delays on their lineups. That may be a boon for distributors with top-notch content to sell. And we feature a lot of great content in this issue, from new crime and romance dramas to a raft of kids’ shows and more, plus we spotlight the tricky business of scripted formats. 8 WORLD SCREEN 7/20

TWICE THE
DRAMA
Formats are in high demand as commissioners and producers look for shortcuts in the high-risk business of scripted content. By Mansha Daswani Two unusual doctors have been battling it out for supremacy on the Turkish television ratings charts: Ates Hekimoğlu in Kanal D’s Hekimoğlu, based on Hugh Laurie’s cantankerous Dr. House; and Ali Vefa in FOX’s Mucize Doktor, modeled on the autistic savant at the center The Good Doctor. That’s just two of an array of international dramas that have been remade in Turkey as local producers find new ways to win the intensely competitive battle for eyeballs on the free-to-air broadcasters. And what’s happening in Turkey is taking place in lots of other markets as everyone looks for more cost-effective, faster ways to deliver locally resonant dramas. “Historically, people haven’t looked too far for local story development,” observes Andre Renaud, the senior VP of global format sales at BBC Studios. “But in the last two years, the impact 7/20 WORLD SCREEN 11
WSDIG_720_SCRIPTED.qxp_REAL_408_NIGHT 7/15/20 5:32 PM Page 5
of scripted has grown. I think there are two key things, besides the characters and stories we’ve told. One is the reduced development cost, and two is the reduced development time. A show can be from page to stage within a year.” Stephen Driscoll, the executive VP for EMEA at all3media international, Liar is all3media international’s best-selling scripted format. has a similar perspective, adding, “This coupled with gaining access to award-winning writers and critically acclaimed scripts makes scripted formats a viable content choice. When considering scripted formats, commissioners can see the demonstrable success that the original has achieved, including strong ratings, critical acclaim and awards. Most importantly, though, the format must bring something fresh that hasn’t been pitched to them as an original.” Sharon Levi, the head of sales at Armoza Formats, says that using a scripted format is akin to taking a shortcut. “Coming up with the idea and the scripts takes so long, and so much money [needs to be] invested in development. You want to be fast in releasing shows and being up to date. Formats have that to offer. Also, these formats have aired somewhere in the world, so they’ve already been proven. People know the formula works, so you’re taking a little less of a chance.” Of course, not everything can be remade. So what makes a show formattable? BBC Studios’ Renaud puts it down to “strong, bold 12 WORLD SCREEN 7/20

characters,” where “individual stories and events surrounding them can be both unique and universal.” “Mother is adaptable because the story is very relatable,” says Shigeko Cindy Chino, the associate managing director for international business development at Nippon TV, which has sold the format to Turkey and Korea, among other markets. “This theme of strong bonds and relationships among strangers can be seen in any culture, and Mother told it so well.” Fredrik af Malmborg, the managing director of Eccho Rights, points to relatability as being a major factor in the success of Nurses, which began in Finland and has been remade in Sweden, Slovakia, Slovenia and, most recently, France. “It’s not like an American hospital series that looks too polished,” af Malmborg explains. Liar, first made for ITV and SundanceTV, has been all3media international’s most successful scripted format to date, with deals sealed in Italy, India, Spain, Germany and France. “The set up was so strong and original, commissioners got it quickly and saw how powerful it could be with a local cast and crew,” Driscoll explains. While dramas certainly dominate the scriptedformat landscape, comedies should not be discounted. Armoza Formats’ best- Sestričky is the Slovakian version of Eccho Rights’ Nurses. 7/20 WORLD SCREEN 13

selling scripted format has been La Famiglia and BBC Studios’ has been The Office. But, comedy is harder to adapt, says Levi at Armoza Formats. “Sometimes a lot of the words get lost in translation. You need to be flexible, but also you need a very creative writer to find where the comedy is and adapt it to the local language and culture.” Adapting drama isn’t easy either. “We must be aware that ‘localization’ is not about imitating the original,” says Chino at Nippon TV. “It is about perceiving the original and translating it into a relatable context for the local viewers.” As such, flexibility is paramount “in terms of cultural differences, language barriers, religious or spiritual issues,” says Levi. “You can’t force the commissioners to do something against what they believe their viewers are going to relate to.” At Eccho Rights, af Malmborg says that having “a good consulting process” is crucial, “so [the producers] know the thoughts behind the original scripts. You’re free to adapt if you know what you’re adapting. If you don’t, then you may make mistakes.” A good format adaptation process also requires providing support to your producing partner, says Nippon TV is offering up the format rights to Off the Record. 14 WORLD SCREEN 7/20

BBC Studios’ Renaud. “It’s crucial to be able to partner the essence of the idea with how it gets localized. We have scripted development producers who do that, and they’re available from the very beginning of the commission through to helping to bring that story to life.” Armoza Formats’ best-selling scripted format is La Famiglia. Negotiations around scripted formats also require much conversation about who will hold the rights to the remakes— and how those multiple versions are sold. “We represent a Turkish series called Ezel that was adapted in Romania as Vlad,” says af Malmborg at Eccho Rights. “We have sold that to Bulgaria and we have a few other deals. It makes sense to keep the franchise together.” For Renaud at BBC Studios, it’s often a different type of client that would want a scripted format versus a finished product. “Drama Republic’s Doctor Foster has been licensed around the world, mostly on OTT services, and the local adaptations are coming on to [linear] broadcasters, so it is possible to have both in one market. I think it’s rare that there would be a single channel that would look at both investing in a local drama like that and also buying tape; you tend to do one or the other.” 7/20 WORLD SCREEN 15

fter a production pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Gusto TV’s studio is back up and running. in the studio this year, versus field productions with outdoor locations, due to health and safety measures and travel restrictions. But Chris Knight, Gusto TV’s president and CEO, says this provides an opportunity to come up with “more, different and innovative programming” to make up for that. By producing its content in-house, Gusto TV has benefited in numerous ways. One of which is that it can make sure the brand’s commitment to cultural diversity comes through onscreen. The company was founded on the idea that “we should celebrate our differences and celebrate the things that we have in common,” says Knight.

Entitled comes from the creative minds of Ryan Sarno, Patrick Daly and Patrick Shay, friends and collaborators with a palpable chemistry that comes through in the final production. They joined stars Gabriella Piazza and Blake Rice for a video conference with Kristin Brzoznowski, executive editor of World Screen, as well as Wamiq Jawaid, founder and CEO of Bowery Media, to give a behind-the-scenes look at Entitled. Bowery Media is currently selling the dramedy as a series or a feature, produced by RPS Productions, worldwide—to cable or digital platforms. With heaps of dark comedy and witty dialogue, the characters in the show learn to understand the importance of family, and that when everything else in life is down the tubes, family—for the most part—is the only truth left. The audience comes to both love and loathe the characters; they’ll want to tune in each week to see who lifts their spirits and who sparks their ire. 7/20 WORLD SCREEN 21

pandemic. As a result, the company will have four new seasons of various shows premiering in the fall. Scandinavia has long been famous for Nordic noir, and crime stories continue to be in demand, but there is also a Nordic romance genre emerging from the region, as audiences are welcoming lighter “blue-sky” fare—and Eccho Rights is ready to deliver this.

With countries’ production sectors having been impacted in different ways (and to varying degrees) by shutdowns, Eccho Rights has certainly benefited from the diversity of its portfolio— which counts series from all across Asia, Europe and Latin America. This diverse portfolio of drama has allowed the company to thrive in meeting the needs of broadcasters. Fredrik af Malmborg, managing director of Eccho Rights, spoke to Anna Carugati, World Screen’s group editorial director, via video conference about the strengths of the company’s varied offering and where the bright spots can be found even in darker times. 7/20 WORLD SCREEN 23

PECTATIONS Xavier Aristimuño, VP of licensing at HBO Latin America, on offering innovative content to engage global audiences. By Kristin Brzoznowski or more than 17 years, HBO Latin America has been a pioneer in the production of high-quality original content in the LatAm region. And the programming roster is continuing to grow, “telling stories about unique and relevant topics through diverse points of view,” says Xavier Aristimuño, VP of licensing. “We offer content that awakens global interest in the Latin American audiovisual industry, proudly positioning our productions to new audiences around the world. We guide our future through innovation, taking risks and developing powerful narratives that explore new, challenging formats and engage global audiences.” HBO Latin America’s international distribution and licensing department has seen gains each year, Aristimuño adds. Its original productions have aired all across Latin America and the Caribbean, and are also present on HBO platforms around the world. Even still, enlarging the global footprint for this content remains top of mind. “We guide our path by providing unparalleled relevance for our audiences, searching for unique and powerful stories,” says Aristimuño. “Producing premium television for us has simply been a continuation of many years of placing exceptional talent in all areas of production.” All of HBO Latin America’s original productions are HD/4K quality and dubbed in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

“Without a doubt, the increased international success of multicultural content has cultivated acceptance in markets that previously focused mostly on local content,” Aristimuño notes. “It has given clients and potential clients the time to understand and enjoy the quality of our productions. The result has been clear, giving us an important boom in sales and brand positioning in different regions of the world.” To date, HBO Latin America has produced more than 30 titles that add up to more than 450 hours, comprising series, miniseries

and documentaries. The programming can be divided into three key segments. The first being the classics—productions that marked an era in Latin American production such as The Bronze Garden (El Jardín de Bronce), The Business (O Negócio), Psi and Sr. Ávila. The second category is its most recent hits, such as The Secret Life of Couples (A Vida Secreta dos Casais), Joint Venture (Pico da Neblina) and He, She, They (Todxs Nós), as well as the latest premiere, Hard. The third category is upcoming productions, “which are generating enormous expectations and interest from international clients,” Aristimuño says. 26 WORLD SCREEN 7/20

The show is set in Brokenwood, a sleepy town with a population of 5,000 (and declining), nestled in New Zealand’s wine country. The show’s hero, Senior Sergeant Mike Shepherd, is dependable and kind. He has flaws but is a likable fellow with a love of country music and an emotional bond to a scruffy old car rather than life’s darker temptations (although the twinkle in his eye has left a few ex-wives in his trail). He has been known to chat to the victims about the nature of their death, which others might find strange, but Brokenwood’s is a world of deadpan humor and warm camaraderie.

remake of the U.S. series House, Hekimoğlu stars Timuçin Esen as acclaimed infectious diseases and nephrology physician Ates Hekimoğlu, who is antisocial, witty, arrogant and undeniably talented. Produced by Karga Seven Pictures, written by Banu Kiremitçi Bozkurt and directed by Hülya Gezer, the Turkish version of the medical drama leads Kanal D International’s vast catalog of drama titles. “Hekimoğlu has dominated the prime time of Tuesday nights as number one in the rankings,” says Kerim Emrah Turna, executive director at Kanal D International. And although the coronavirus pandemic forced filming delays, it won’t be long until the cast and crew can pick up where they left off in following the equal parts frustrating and genius doctor. Hekimoğlu wasn’t the only title on Kanal D International’s slate affected by the global health crisis. New Life, starring Serkan Çayoğlu and Melisa Aslı Pamuk, was set for a March premiere that will be rescheduled. The drama opens with Adem, a former member of the Special Forces, getting a business opportunity to protect the young wife of a rich and powerful businessman while ostensibly being able to live a happy life with his wife and daughter— yet it’s not long before the opportunity proves itself to be a nightmare in disguise. The romantic comedy Romance Next Door carries “the essence of the old Turkish movies,” according to Turna. Produced by Mia Yapım, it’s both a love story and the story of friendship between four young people from different social classes and cultures.

wenty-three years since the original Blue’s Clues bowed on Nickelodeon (and then ran for six critically-acclaimed seasons), Traci Paige Johnson, together with co-creator Angela C. Santomero, ushered in an updated version of the series for today’s kids in Blue’s Clues & You! The remake once again follows the lovable pup Blue as she invites viewers to come along on clue-led adventures to solve a puzzle in each episode. Updates include CG animation for Blue and Magenta, a Handy Dandy Notebook with smartphone technology and updates to Mailbox and the original Thinking Chair. Johnson, who also provides the voice for Blue, talks to TV Kids about why now was the right time to reboot the series. By Chelsea Regan
TV KIDS: Why did it feel like the right time to reintroduce Blue’s Clues? JOHNSON: A lot of kids who grew up with Blue’s Clues or whose siblings grew up with Blue’s Clues are starting to have kids of their own. With the landscape the way it is now, with so much streaming and so much choice, well-loved brands have been coming back. We were always talking to Nickelodeon about bringing it back. The timing seemed right now. Also, with the state of the world, just having the comfort of things you loved as a kid coming back. We couldn’t be more thrilled about how well-received it’s been. It can be a little scary bringing back something that had such a big fan base, but so far, so good. We think that we [struck] the balance of keeping the classic but 7/20 WORLD SCREEN 39

introducing the fresh. Blue is now CG-animated, so she looks more fluffy and huggable than ever. A lot of work and research went into the Handy Dandy Notebook phone. We didn’t want to make it all digital, but we knew that tablets and smartphones are in preschoolers’ environment and everyday world. TV KIDS: What did you feel was important to keep similar to the original and what needed to be refreshed to appeal to today’s kids? JOHNSON: We knew that changing the host would make a big difference. Even though we wanted to keep the iconic stripes of Blue’s Clues, just refreshing it. Then the Handy Dandy Notebook— again wanting to be more modern, but keeping true to the original show. But also, preschoolers should know that nothing trumps crayon and paper, drawing and thinking through those things. And the Thinking Chair. We knew we wanted to keep that the same. A lot of the songs we kept and then some we kind of refreshed. Josh Dela Cruz was Aladdin on Broadway. When he holds a guitar, singing towards you or dancing, he just melts your heart. He’s so genuine that we introduced [the Handy Dandy Guitar] because of Josh and what his talents were. In Mailtime, we still get our old-fashioned letters and snail mail and packages, but Blue’s Clues & You! has already been renewed for a third season. we also get emails. 40 WORLD SCREEN 7/20

TV KIDS: Were the play-along videos always a part of the plan in bringing the show back? JOHNSON: Usually those play-along episodes or play-along videos are all animated, but they’ve created a whole technology where they have Josh on there. He’ll be on-camera and you can interact with him in a physical way. The empowerment that kids get in the play-along videos of being able to draw their own clues and color their own clues is fantastic. That ownership that the kids have is so empowering.
“With the landscape the way it is now, with so much streaming and so much choice, well-loved brands have been coming back.” TV KIDS: What do you think gives Blue’s Clues its enduring appeal among kids and families? JOHNSON: We were very signature and breakthrough in what we did 25 years ago. Looking different and sounding different, but also the message of empowerment and building self-esteem and breaking through that wall and truly connecting with our audience. The heart shows through the love of the show, and if anything, it’s even stronger now— the love of the show, and the heart and still being breakthrough in our visuals. 42 WORLD SCREEN 7/20

Jérôme Alby, Mediatoon Distribution’s managing director, on how the company is filling the needs of kids’ broadcasters and platforms.
ediatoon Distribution offers a wide range of kids’ genres with a vast array of central themes targeting many different age groups of children. From Tom and Lili and Sardine in Outer Space to the upcoming Kid Lucky—based on the Lucky Luke graphicnovel character—as well as Martin Morning, Little Furry, The Fox-Badger Family and Yakari, its catalog covers it all. “Sardine in Outer Space takes place in space, Kid Lucky takes place in the Wild West; then there’s Martin Morning, which takes place in school, for example,” says Jérôme Alby, Mediatoon Distribution’s managing director. “That’s one of the key [aspects] of our catalog. And also the face value that these shows carry. A lot of them are book adaptations, which are good for the family; our catalog is mainly based on titles that are perfect for kids and families.” Indeed Mediatoon’s slate includes shows with an educational component, ideal for kids staying home from school amid the global pandemic. Among the shows with high educational value on offer is Taratabong, the World of the Meloditties, which fea-

Alby also points to Quiz Time, “a quiz show in which Professor Zack asks questions to kids. In each episode, there are three themed questions— from geometry, simple mathematics, things like that.” The content industry is also reckoning with the need to have more diverse stories to offer. And again, Mediatoon finds itself somewhat ahead of the curve. Yakari, for instance, follows a little Sioux boy who has the magical ability to communicate with

The Fox-Badger Family, produced by Ellipsanime and Dargaud Media, centers on the family that’s created when a badger falls in love with a fox and they move in together with his three badger offspring and her fox daughter. “A very good thing about an animated show and animated characters is that they’re quite immune to viruses,” says Alby. “For the time being, and we’re really crossing our fingers, our production lineup has not been affected by the coronavirus. So, my hope, my deepest hope, is that it won’t last too much longer and that we’ll continue that trend.” 46 WORLD SCREEN 7/20

In fact, the market has consolidated its format, growing by almost double in terms of attendance and number of contents presented.” Francesco Rutelli, the president of ANICA, says MIA has become a “welcoming, extended collective project for finding and subsequently implementing an innovative market formula and effective tools for the cinema and audiovisual industry to compete and play globally with our foreign competitors and partners and put Italy back as a pivotal player in the European and global ecosystem.” Last year, MIA logged more than 2,500 participants from 58 countries, a 20 percent increase on the 2018 edition, according to Lucia Milazzotto, the director of MIA. International attendance has steadily increased by 20 percent each year, Milazzotto adds.
