Welcome President of the World Travel Awards Africa & Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony 2010 On behalf of the World Travel Awards, I wish you a very warm welcome to our 2010 Africa & Indian Ocean Ceremony. And what an incredible time to be here in Johannesburg. As the 2010 FIFA World Cup unfolds, billions around the world are not only watching the action on the pitch, they are also witnessing South Africa come of age, with the “City of Gold” serving as the economic and sporting heart of this great nation. This evening is all about celebrating your incredible achievements, and we are honoured to have gathered under one roof the cream of African and Indian Ocean travel and tourism.

South Africa, in particular, has demonstrated incredible determination and skill in rising to its formidable challenge of hosting Africa’s first FIFA World Cup. In preparation for the tournament, it has completed an infrastructure programme in five years that would usually take two decades – from new roads and the upgrading of airports to new football stadia and South Africa’s first underground railway system with the Gautrain, the legacy will benefit many generations to come. The private sector meanwhile has successfully opened dozens of new hotels across the entire breadth of the country, including almost thirty here in Johannesburg alone.

The region’s leading organisations have been nominated to win “a travel industry Oscar” and I am proud to say that competition is the fiercest yet in our 17-year history.

And right across this great continent – from Algeria to Zanzibar – the benefits of World Cup fever is as infectious off the pitch as it is on.

So what does it take to win a World Travel Award? Though our winners hail from every sector of the travel industry and from every corner of the globe, they all share one thing in common – an unrivalled ability to rise to a challenge.

Congratulations to all award winners and also to those who have made this evening possible. We also extend a special thank you to our partners World.Mobi, BBC World News, Breaking Travel News and eTurboNews.

Honouring and promoting excellence and innovation in travel and tourism are why we are gathered all here – so please enjoy yourselves with this in mind, for we value your incredible achievements and what you are doing for our industry. Thank you all for being here with us on this very special occasion, and congratulations once again for your incredible achievements. Graham E. Cooke President and Founder World Travel Awards

Welcome Chief Executive Officer Johannesburg Tourism Company Africa & Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony 2010 Welcome to the World Travel Awards Gala Dinner. I am honoured and privileged that a vibrant, energetic and dynamic Johannesburg - affectionately known as Joburg, Jozi or Egoli - has been chosen to host the ‘Oscars’ of the world travel and tourism industry. This is a city of contrast where the soul of Africa is fused with the Eastern and Western influences. Its diversity is both intriguing and exciting; the city has evolved dramatically from its riotous, gritty gold mining beginnings in 1886. In just over a century, Joburg has grown exponentially to be one of the world’s 40 largest metropolitan centres, and South Africa’s largest and most exciting city. However, being the business epicenter for a continent is not what makes us famous – rather it’s our people, the cultures and the infinite choices available to guests, visitors and locals alike. Joburg has become an eclectic mix of people and cultures that have combined over a century, to deliver myriads of talent and services capable of enthralling even the most seasoned of cosmopolitan travellers. Joburg is growing at an unprecedented rate – constantly and continuously transforming itself. As proud host to the Lion’s Share of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ football tournament, our city has truly come into its own, rising to the occasion to showcase its infrastructure, hospitality, culture, vibrancy and attractions to the world. It is our mission to show our guests not only a memorable time, but to deliver the experience of a lifetime!

For the past two years the Johannesburg Tourism Company has been hard at work, in close co-operation with not only Gauteng Province and the City of Johannesburg, but more recently also with the private sector, in an effort to pull this off - and now is our chance to shine and to position and entrench Johannesburg as an attractive, sought-after destination for both business and leisure travellers. For Johannesburg, the City’s 2010 Readiness Initiatives have provided the impetus for a long term World Cup legacy, which is very positive and exciting. Programmes include everything from community involvement through the Football for Hope initiative in Alex, to upgraded and improved infrastructure, like the Freeway Improvement Project, Rea Vaya bus rapid transit system and the Gautrain projects. We’ve invested in improved information dissemination, skills and service level enhancements, including Information Touch Screens, Brochures and Kiosks, as well as the Volunteer “Know Your City” Programme. Aside from initiatives to skill up front line staff and tour guides, we’ve established a dedicated Tourist Cadet unit within the Joburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), to ensure tourist safety and security. Moreover, the city’s accommodation offering has been enhanced through the grading of accommodation establishments (including SMME and others), as well as the launch of some 13 new hotels.

This entertainment mecca is a perennial hive of activity, fashion shows, fan fests, theatrical productions, nightlife and dining experiences. And then of course, not forgetting the township experience – no stopover in the City of Gold would be complete without a visit to Jozi’s exuberant, stylish, hip and happening townships. For the duration of the 2010 World Cup, we have created an exciting atmosphere through a programme of lifestyle events to ensure that we rock our visitors after the 90 minutes of the game are over, hence our slogan, ”From full time to party time – Joburg Rocks!” This is the central theme of our marketing campaign for the winter of 2010. And this is exactly what we plan on demonstrating to our visitors – that Joburg is indeed the pulse of South Africa’s playground at all times. Once again, we extend the very warmest of Joburg welcomes to you, invite you to make the most your time with us – and to enjoy discovering why the people who live here love it, and those who visit our great city never forget it! Special Focus:

Beyond the final whistle

Even before the final whistle has been blown, Africa’s first World Cup is already being heralded as a huge success, both on and off the pitch. But how can the continent build on the tournament’s unifying spirit to build a better future for all? At a recent press conference in Cape Town, the retired Archbishop Desmond Tutu urged every South African to take a moment to congratulate themselves on being the first nation in the continent to host the World Cup, and the associated boost to its tourism industry – and then to use the goodwill and good publicity that the tournament has generated as a foundation to build a greater South Africa.

“As South Africans, we need to pat ourselves on the back for having achieved something very special in terms of developing fantastic infrastructure, ensuring that it works, and uniting our people,” said Tutu. Now, he added, the nation must consider how to “make the World Cup not an end, but a new beginning.” In the short term, football fever has given the economy a timely boost, helping South Africa navigate the global downturn and accelerate its cyclical

10

recovery whilst many other nations worldwide struggle to reignite their economies. The boost to tourism revenues during the tournament is estimated to surpass $1.5 billion, adding an extra 0.5 per cent to the country’s GDP this year, and creating some 129,000 jobs. The majority of this revenue will be spent on accommodation, transport, food, entertainment and shopping. However it is beyond the final whistle

that the country is expected to reap the

greatest rewards, and the role of the tournament as a catalyst for change can not be overestimated. The biggest impetus has been the infrastructure drive. It is often easy to forget that South Africa held its first democratic elections just 16 years ago. Before then, under the apartheid government, infrastructure had suffered decades of neglect and underinvestment. Long before its successful bid to host the World Cup, the African National Congress had highlighted the need for upgrading infrastructure. The World Cup has provided a focal point for building a new South Africa. In just five years it has accomplished a $2.5 billion infrastructure programme that would usually take two decades. From new roads and the upgrading of airports to new football stadia and South Africa’s first underground railway system with the Gautrain, the legacy will benefit many generations to come. The national airports authority alone has spent $2 billion upgrading the three main airports – Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban – and six peripheral ones. Telkom, the national telecoms operator, has spent $500 million boosting telecoms and internet services. The largest private sector beneficiary has been travel and tourism. The tournament can be credited with raising efficiency and lowering costs much more rapidly than planned, and helped release donor funds that would not have otherwise been forthcoming. This has led to dozens of new hotels opening across the breadth of the country, including almost thirty in Johannesburg. The luxury sector in particular is experiencing a windfall with ten new hotels in the five-star category coming on to the market. These include the Taj Cape Town and the One & Only Cape Town, with both opening their doors in April. Fairmont opened its hotly-anticipated 154-room Zimbali Resort last month. South African hospitality brand, Signature Life Hotels, typifies the entrepreneurial spirit that has accompanied the tournament by opening eight hotels in a mere two months.

These are long-term benefits that will last way beyond 2010 and contribute to the country’s GDP growth. But it is not just South Africa that is reaping the rewards of football fever. In its latest World Tourism Barometer Update, the UNWTO outlines a growth in international tourist arrivals of 7 percent across the continent of Africa during the first quarter of 2010. Highlights include Morocco recording a 7 percent increase year-on-year, coming on the back of double-digit growth from September through November. Despite huge gaps in coverage that will inevitably distort final trends, the results confirmed that a number of countries in Sub-Saharan Africa far outperformed the world average in 2009. Swaziland recorded double-digit growth (in the first eight months) and Rwanda’s arrivals rose 9 percent. Zimbabwe is third only to Qatar and Lebanon as the fastest growing tourism economy in 2010. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, it will be the second fastest growing tourism economy by GDP contribution for the next decade, growing at an annualised rate of 8.2 per cent. Kenya sustained its recovery, achieving a phenomenal 37 percent increase through October. During FIFA 2010, Kenya Tourist Board also launched a tie-up with host city Johannesburg to promote tourism beyond South Africa’s borders. JTC chief Lindiwe Kwele explained: “While we might be a gateway city and an economic hub, Joburg has really embraced the 2010 World Cup as being an African event and we’ve partnered with KTB to ensure that not only South Africans, but also international visitors, get a taste for the attractions and the warmth of our people throughout our continent.” The partnership has typified the spirit of the World Cup that has united this great continent, and showed the world the beauty and strength of its people and celebrated its independence and burgeoning identity. In many ways, the

tournament has been about allowing people to see what those who live here

About Us World Travel Awards

The World Travel Awards acknowledges and celebrates those organisations that have made the greatest contribution to the global tourism and travel industry. It also recognises those brands that are driving the industry to greater heights and innovation in travel. Celebrating its 17th anniversary this year, the awards has grown into a truly global search for the very best travel and tourism brands, with the winners from the six regional ceremonies progressing to the World Travel Awards Grand Final in London on 7 November. Last year, 183,000 travel professionals registered to vote and participate in the prestigious World Travel Awards programme – a phenomenal 10% rise in registrations compared to the year before. This record number is conclusive evidence that World Travel Awards has become the “Oscars” of the global travel industry. Graham E. Cooke, Founder and President, World Travel Awards, said: “World Travel Awards is a unique benchmark for industry quality and business excellence in every region and sector.”

“The increase in registered voters, despite a global recession, demonstrates the vital role of performance delivery in a challenging and highly competitive marketplace,” he added. This level of accountability makes the World Travel Awards one of the highest accolades in the travel business and is why the award ceremony is broadcast by BBC World News and other networks to over 254 million households worldwide and attended by the industry’s global decision makers. For the tourism trade, winning a World Travel Award is more than an award – it is an endorsement from the thousands of professionals from around the globe, as well as a gold seal to the consumer of travel excellence guaranteed.

The World Travel Awards has continuously evolved, expanding the number of awards as the industry has grown. There are now over 1,000 different categories – an understandable number seeing how the industry has diversified and given the fact that there were over 3,600 different nominees last year. And as confidence returns to the global economy, the World Travel Awards will be there to reward those travel and tourism players that spearhead the recovery.

Umoja

Umoja

A musical theatre that transports the audience into the history of South African music and dance. Showcasing traditional love songs, lullabies and other musical expressions of rural life, the audience has cried along to the music reflecting the pain of the migrant labourers and their families. The tale dances through shebeens and the cultural melting-pot of Sophiatown. The heart is saddened by cold stories of forced removals yet the feet continue to stomp along with the explosions of gumboot dancing.

Despite its occasional moments of reflection and pathos, UMOJA is a loud, colourful and jubilant celebration of life that is infectiously delightful and uplifting. The 50 piece cast is made up of South African cultures and has its own touching story to tell. The cast have all come from poor backgrounds and have never had previous exposure or training. Most of the cast were street kids from Soweto and untrained artists from the townships.

Trevor has been performing for a little over 2 years but is already recognised as one of the top comedians in the country. His sharp wit, intelligent commentary, unmistakable charm and clinical delivery have made Trevor Noah a very popular performer in South Africa. Career highlights include opening for international superstar Russell Peters on his South African Tour, charming audiences with his comedy opening for Julio Iglesias and being the only comedian in South Africa to have made the cut for the international audition of NBC’s Last Comic Standing. Also chosen to represent his country as the only local act at the Jozi International Comedy Festival, Trevor earned rave reviews. He has recently been booked to perform at the biggest festival in the country - this year’s instalment Cape Town International Comedy Festival in the Main Arena.

Kwela Tebza

Sterling EQ Instrumental pop supergroup Sterling EQ has taken the entertainment industry by storm with their genre-defying musical style and sensational live performance. Sterling has proved to be one of the most successful instrumental bands ever to come out of South Africa, through the extensive media coverage they’ve enjoyed and performing on the stages of coveted events such as the South African Music Awards (SAMA’s), the opening of Cape Town stadium, FIFA Final Draw party in Long Street, and IPL Cricket Tournament opening. They’ve shared stages with icons such as Boney M, Snow Patrol, Johnny Clegg, Parlotones and Soweto Gospel Choir, and have entertained local and international celebrities to the likes of Elton John, Annie Lennox, and Lance Armstrong, to name but a few. Sterling EQ will perform a selection of crowd pleasing melodies and show stoppers.

African Footprint African Footprint, an explosive stampede of Song & Dance! Celebrating its 10th Anniversary, African Footprint has performed from China, Australia, Europe, Canada to the USA with critical acclaim. Filled with pride, passion and energy, these young artists celebrate the heartbeat of Africa and honour South Africa’s past, present and future. A RICHARD LORING PRODUCTION.

A force to be reckoned with, Tebogo, Tshepo and Mpho have managed to harbour the spirit of Kwela music from days gone by and give the genre the vibe of now, making it possible for them to stay true to the sound and still move the music forward. Their unavoidable and irresistible stage presence has also made them one of the acts to look out for around world stages from Singapore to Australia, Brazil and back home in South Africa. They have left audiences astounded and earned

The Soweto Marimba Youth League In an area where school learners do not have access to formal music instruction, the SMYLe project seeks to use music as a means for teaching disadvantaged youth that hard work and commitment to a common purpose can lead to measured excellence. Their motto is, “Where you get to in life is not a function of where you begin, but rather of how hard you’re willing to work to get to where you want to be.” The kids of SMYLe are self-taught, with musicians ranging in age from 6 to 22, learning their craft by ear (only one team member even knows how to read music) and where songs are typically ‘rearranged’ to include a SMYLe flavour. The team has the capacity to learn a new song in as few as 30 minutes – to performance readiness – and have a repertoire of more than 100 songs.

praise from their peers. They have appeared at many prestigious events including; the South African Music Awards, The Mzansi Awards and the FIFA 2009 Confederations Cup opening ceremony, to name but a few.

Clinch Crew Holding the number one title as ‘best hip hop crew’ in South Africa, the Clinch Crew are known for their diverse dance style and unique performances. Combining break dancing, acrobatics, new school, old school and recently krumping, the crew are taking street dance to its most commercial heights. Founded by Mernoly Simba, Junior (Jay) and Olie Kayembe in 2004, they have worked alongside South Africa’s best entertainers and have shared a platform with international artists such as: HHp, G.I, Skwatta Kamp, Jamali, Pro Kid, Missy Elliot, Pharrel, Black Eyed Peas, Sean Paul, the late Lebo Mathosa, The Pyramid, Danny K and Entity. Soon to be representing South Africa in Las Vegas at the international hip hop championship in July 2010, they have also successfully organised and hosted the largest hip hop dance competition in Africa - ‘Masters of Rhythm’.
