Welcome President of the World Travel Awards The inaugural Australasia Awards Gala Dinner 2008 Dear friends, It is a tremendous honour to welcome you to the inaugural World Travel Awards 2008: Australasia Dinner here in Sydney, Australia. With its blend of sunbleached natural attractions, boundless energy and fusion of cultures, Sydney was always going to be our star choice to host the ceremony, especially as this year it is the ‘City of Celebrations’. How could we miss out on the party! Tourism has always been a strong performer Down Under and business now is flourishing like never before. In 2007 international tourists delivered a $23.3 billion boost to the Australian economy, a six percent increase on 2006,

making it a record year for the country with 5.6 million visitors. Our industry is also growing across the whole Australasia region. New Zealand enjoyed another record year thanks to a booming US cruise market, a strong rise in inbound travel from China, as well as higher visitor numbers from Australia. In the South Pacific, Fiji’s recovery is well on track with tourist numbers expected to reach pre-coup levels by the end of 2008. This year will inevitably bring tough challenges but the Australasian region has the tools to meet them thanks to its depth of attractions and rich diversity. World Travel Awards is here to celebrate those strengths.

Congratulations to all those people who are receiving awards and to those that have made this evening possible. Honouring and promoting excellence and innovation in tourism and travel is the very essence of this regional gala – so please enjoy yourselves with this in mind, for we value your tremendous achievements and what you have done for our industry. Thank you all for being here with us on this very special evening.

Sincerely yours, Graham E. Cooke President and Founder World Travel Awards

Welcome Regional Managing Director Orient-Express Hotels

It is an immense honor for the entire team, here at The Observatory Hotel, to host Australia’s inaugural Australasian regional awards ceremony this evening. Like the World Travel Awards, our hotel is also commemorating a 15-year anniversary and we can not think of a better way to celebrate. The World Travel Awards are the cordon bleu of the travel industry’s awards and The Observatory Hotel has been bestowed a number of commendations for excellence in the 'Leading Hotel' category for many years. So it was an even greater privilege to hear that we were firstly, nominated again this year and secondly,

selected out of the region's finest hotel's to host the distinguished ceremony. Furthermore, we are thrilled to see Orient-Express Hotels’ second property in Australia, Lilianfels Blue Mountains Resort & Spa nominated this year in two resort categories. We do hope you enjoy the evening and to my esteemed colleagues and all of the very deserving nominees in the running for an award this evening - very best of luck!
