Welcome President of the World Travel Awards Middle East Gala Ceremony 2010 On behalf of the World Travel Awards, I wish you a very warm welcome to our 2010 Middle East Ceremony. And what an incredible setting to host our first event of the new decade here at The Address Dubai Marina! This evening is all about celebrating your incredible achievements, and we are honoured to have gathered under one roof the cream of Arabian travel and tourism. The region's leading travel organisations have been nominated to win “a travel industry Oscar” and I am proud to say that competition is the fiercest yet in our 17year history. So what does it take to scoop a World Travel Award? Though our winners come from every sector of the travel and tourism industry and from every corner of the globe, they all share one thing in common – an unrivalled ability to turn adversity into opportunity. The past year has been arguably one of the most challenging yet in the history of the Middle East tourism. Yet it has also seen the brightest talents in the region digging deep and gaining their stripes as true leaders in travel.

Here in Dubai, the opening of the Burj Khalifa in January marked a turning point. The world’s tallest building opened on time and on budget, and showed the world that Dubai is back. Confidence is also returning with plans for Al Maktoum International Airport back on schedule. Dubai International Airport is enjoying phenomenal growth having doubled its capacity at Terminal 3 last year. Abu Dhabi meanwhile is continuing its rapid ascent to tourism superstardom. The inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and the opening of the spectacular Yas Hotel on Saadiyat Island gave the world a taste of what is to come. And right across the region – from Oman to Jordan – tourism is on the ascendancy. Our host, The Address Hotels + Resorts, epitomises the Middle East’s self belief and its flair for innovation. Since bursting onto the Arabian hospitality scene 23 months ago, its combination of leading-edge design and spectacular locations has set a new precedent. Tonight, however, is also about highlighting one of The Address Duabi Marina’s other defining features – its stateof-the-art conference and meeting facilities.

Congratulations to all award winners and also to those who have made this evening possible, especially our wonderful host, The Address Dubai Marina. We also extend a special thank you to our partners BBC World News, Breaking Travel News, eTurboNews, World.Mobi, CNBC Arabiya, Khaleej Times, TTN and Trade Arabia. Honouring and promoting excellence and innovation in travel and tourism are why we are all gathered here – so please enjoy yourselves with this in mind, for we value your incredible achievements and what you are doing for our industry. Thank you all for being here with us on this very special occasion, and congratulations once again for your incredible achievements.

Graham E. Cooke President and Founder World Travel Awards

Special Focus:

Middle East

The opening of the Burj Khalifa at the start of this year marked a turning point for Dubai. The world’s tallest building, which had been hastily renamed in honour of the ruling family of neighbour and benefactor Abu Dhabi, opened on time and on budget and to much praise. It also signalled an end to the worst year in terms of negative publicity that the emirate had ever had to endure. The threat of a possible default on a massive multi-billion dollar loan by government-owned Dubai World threatened to plunge the world into a double-dip recession. It was only the bailout from Abu Dhabi which helped pull Dubai World, and in turn the emirate itself, back from the brink.

6

Burj Khalifa stands at the heart of Downtown Dubai, which includes a number of other iconic buildings including one of the emirate’s most stylish and sophisticated new hotels The Address Downtown Dubai. The Address Downtown Dubai was a double award winner at last year’s World Travel Awards, securing “Dubai’s Leading Lifestyle Hotel” and “Middle East’s Leading New Hotel”. It has also been nominated for a clutch of awards at tonight’s ceremony, including “Middle East’s Leading Business Hotel”, “Middle East’s Leading Hotel” and “Middle East’s Leading Hotel Apartments”.

The hotel is 63 storeys high and has 196 rooms and 626 serviced apartments. It also has seven world-class restaurants, modern meeting and event venues, a spa, a fitness centre and swimming pools. Downtown Dubai also includes The Dubai Fountain and The Dubai Mall, the world’s largest shopping and entertainment centre. This year there has been a renewed optimism in the emirate, with the sounds of diggers and cranes once again part of the background hum of the city. One of the key areas where there has been renewed optimism – and growth – is in the aviation sector.

MiddleEast_programme_2010_v3:Layout 1 22/04/2010 13:45 Page 7

Ian Scott, UK director of Dubai Tourism Commerce Marketing, said: “There was phenomenal growth in 2009, a lot of development going on at the airport. “Terminal 3 opened and Emirates moved in and it’s hugely increased the capacity there.” T3 doubled the capacity from 30m passengers per year to 60m. As well as the development taking place at Dubai International Airport, the £33bn new airport complex being built near Jebel Ali Port is back on schedule after a few wobbles last year. Al Maktoum International Airport, about 40kms from Dubai downtown, forms part of another Dubai mega-project incorporating hotels and properties known as Dubai World Central and will open for cargo in June and for passengers in 2011. It will (almost inevitably) be the biggest airport in the world when it finally opens in about 2025, with five runways, three terminals and up to four planes landing at the same time all day every day. It will be able to handle up to 160m passengers a year (the world’s busiest international airport Atlanta, handled 90m last year). It will become the world’s largest cargo hub and be able to handle all new generation aircraft including the A380. DWC is being described as a “city-withina-city” and to get an idea of scale is almost twice the size of Hong Kong Island. DWC is designed to support Dubai’s aviation, tourism, commercial and logistics requirements until 2050 and beyond, transforming the United Arab Emirates, and indeed the region, into one of the most powerful global centres for commerce, logistics and tourism. Figures recently released by Dubai International Airport also show a sharp pick-up in passenger traffic in February, by 22.6 per cent increase compared to

the same month last year. The airport handled 3,640,323 passengers compared to 2,969,569 passengers in February 2009. The strong growth in February follows the record monthly passenger traffic of over 3.8 million in January, bringing the year-to-date passenger throughput to 7,501,848, up 19.7 per cent over the same period in 2009. Last month, the airport saw a growth of 17 per cent over January 2009 figures. The percentage increases are sharply up on 2008 figures when passenger traffic at Dubai International increased from 34.34 million in 2007 to 37.44 million, a year-on-year growth of 9 per cent.

This optimism is borne out by Dubai Airshow organiser F&E Aerospace, which is expecting to attract a record number of business aviation service providers and manufacturers to the Middle East Business Aviation exhibition and conference, from 7 to 9 December 2010. The recession forced the organisers to suspend last year’s show, but the one before in 2008 attracted some 250 exhibitors from 30 countries and over 5,500 visitors, with more than US$1.5billion worth of deals struck. The fourth running of the series in December promises an increase in exhibitor numbers to some 350, judging by an already strong interest in the event among business aviation companies, and commitments to date.

First-time exhibitors include Honeywell, AN Aviation and Rizon Jet, which are joining returning organisations such as Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC), Jet Aviation, Sikorsky and Al Jaber Aviation. Up to 85 business aircraft will be displayed on the outdoor static aircraft park, which will also feature more company pavilions than in previous shows. Alison Weller, Managing Director of F&E Aerospace, commented: “With a recent report predicting an annual growth rate for the Middle East business aviation market of more than six per cent over the next 10 years, the region will surely see an increase in business aviation service providers to cater to this demand.” The one mega project which has slowed, according to official sources, is Dubailand.

8

development, but new projects get added on an almost daily basis. Despite the recession, the United Arab Emirates suffered only a 1 per cent drop in the number of tourists in the first three quarters of the year.

month of February 2010 with hotel average room being US$252. It held the same status in the previous three months with the average room rate being US$250 in January, December 2009 US$235 and US$236 in November 2009.

According to DTCM’s Scott, the emirate’s vision of 15m tourists – up from the current 8m – was still on target despite the dip.

Abu Dhabi had a boom year last year, playing host to its first F1 event and the opening of the spectacular Yas Hotel on Saadiyat Island.

DTCM launched a new kids go free campaign earlier this year in a bid to keep the target on track.

It was one of the few countries in the world that managed to buck the international trend and actually increase room rates, mainly due to an acute lack of supply.

Last year’s promotion attracted an extra 30,000 visitors to the emirate – DTCM hopes to double this figure with the latest promotion. The campaign offers free holidays for children under 16 between May 14 and September 30.

On average, its year-on-year rates rose by more than 33 per cent to become the most expensive in the world at £173. This year, it hopes to consolidate on that success with a raft of new hotels, the opening of Ferrari World, the World Rally Championships and the 2010 Formula 1.

The mega-resort, twice the size of Walt Disney Resort, was due to open in 2007 and has now been put back until 2012 at least.

DTCM held a meeting with Dubai hoteliers in April as part of its continuous efforts to take stock of the current tourism industry developments and discuss various initiatives to boost visitors’ number to the emirate and hotel occupancies.

It will be showcasing all that the capital of the United Arab Emirates has to offer at May’s Arabian Travel Market in Dubai.

Dubailand will have an area of 278 km2 (107 sq mi) and include 45 “mega projects” and 200 sub projects. To date, there are currently 22 projects under

And in another boost to the recovery of the emirate, the STR report revealed that Dubai ranked first in the world for the average room rate (ARR) in the

The Abu Dhabi pavilion will take up 1,400 square metres and will be the largest of any stand at Arabian Travel Market.

“This is our biggest trade statement yet that this destination is evolving,” said Mubarak Al Nuaimi, International Promotions Manager, Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority. “We have this year already welcomed a host of new attractions to Abu Dhabi and more hotels and resorts will open, the world’s biggest indoor theme park will be launched and new events will be introduced before the year is out. “It is a defining year in our ambitions to increase hotel guest stays to the emirate by 10 per cent this year to reach the 1.65 million mark.” National airline Etihad Airways, has just announced it will commence flights from Abu Dhabi to Baghdad on April 26, subject to government and regulatory approvals, becoming the first airline in the UAE to fly to Iraq.

There are a number of tourism projects underway in Qatar, including the construction of two new conference centres and cultural projects as well as new hotels to tap into the fledgling leisure sector. Al Nuaimi added: "We recognise that our country needs to be positioned as more than a destination for business travel.” This year marks the halfway point for Oman’s 2020 vision, which involves establishing the sultanate as a regional travel and tourism hub, increasing the contribution of the tourism market to GDP to not less than 3 per cent, increasing the participation of the private sector and activating its role in the development of various tourism. Oman has not been immune to the global financial crisis, but early signs of

recovery are expected by the middle of this year. By then, Oman will have geared up for the recovery with a number of tourism projects underway ranging from travel accommodation projects to airport expansions, including at least US$3 billion earmarked for the expansion of the country's international airport and building three new ones in other cities. Bahrain unveiled ambitious tourism plans for 2010, which it will reveal in more detail at this year’s Arabian Travel Market. The Kingdom aims to generate some BD355million (£615m) in tourism this year via a number of big projects, including a desert camp, ‘Tourism Oasis’, which will be set up near the Al Areen Wildlife Park.

Etihad will operate five return services per week to Baghdad, operated by twoclass Airbus A320 aircraft, and will expand its operation with two additional A320 return services to a second Iraq destination – Erbil – from June 1, subject to government and regulatory approvals. Elsewhere in the Gulf region, Qatar has re-emphasised its commitment to upscale and business tourism which it outlined at World Travel Market in November. The tiny gas- and oil-rich Gulf state said it aimed to increase tourism by 20 per cent within the next five years. Ahmed Al Nuaimi, Chairman of Qatar Tourism Authority said: “Qatar will harness its resources to build modern, sophisticated world-class facilities making it the best destination for conferences and international exhibitions. “The massive investments by the government in the tourism sector have helped Qatar become a global hub for quality and excellence at the international level.”

About Us World Travel Awards

The World Travel Awards acknowledges and celebrates those organisations that have made the greatest contribution to the global tourism and travel industry. It also recognises those brands that are driving the industry to greater heights and innovation in travel. Celebrating its 17th anniversary this year, the awards has grown into a truly global search for the very best travel and tourism brands, with the winners from the six regional ceremonies progressing to the World Travel Awards Grand Final in London on 7 November. Last year, 183,000 travel professionals registered to vote and participate in the prestigious World Travel Awards programme – a phenomenal 10% rise in registrations compared to the year before. This record number is conclusive evidence that World Travel Awards has become the “Oscars” of the global travel industry. Graham E. Cooke, Founder and President, World Travel Awards, said: “World Travel Awards is a unique benchmark for industry quality and business excellence in every region and sector.”

“The increase in registered voters, despite a global recession, demonstrates the vital role of performance delivery in a challenging and highly competitive marketplace,” he added. This level of accountability makes the World Travel Awards one of the highest accolades in the travel business and is why the award ceremony is broadcast by BBC World News and other networks to over 254 million households worldwide and attended by the industry’s global decision makers. For the tourism trade, winning a World Travel Award is more than an award – it is an endorsement from the thousands of professionals from around the globe, as well as a gold seal to the consumer of travel excellence guaranteed.

The World Travel Awards has continuously evolved, expanding the number of awards as the industry has grown. There are now over 1,000 different categories – an understandable number seeing how the industry has diversified and given the fact that there were over 3,600 different nominees last year. And as confidence returns to the global economy, the World Travel Awards will be there to reward those travel and tourism players that spearhead the recovery.

At the age of 12 she participated in a TV program called “Noujoum Al Mostakbal”, and won the gold medal for the Tarab category. exceptional talent, worthy of being qualified as a professional artist. Nancy launched her first album “Mouhtagalak” in 1998 and her second album “Shil Oyounak Ani” in 2001, but the real turning point in her career came with the massive hit from her third album “Ya Salam” in 2003, which won the hearts of people from all ages and nationalities and earned Nancy her reputation as the Arab World’s Sweetheart. Following this success, Nancy launched her fourth album “Ah w Noss” in 2005 followed by her fifth, “Ya

Tabtab”, in 2006. In 2008, her sixth album “Bitfakkar bi Eh” was released, continuing her success. Hosts Wonho Chung

Hanane Taalah

Wonho Chung was born in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Although he grew up in an Asian household, Wonho’s upbringing was completely Arab, having been brought up in Amman, Jordan.

Beginning as an 18 year old entrepreneur in London, Hanane, of Algerian and Moroccan descent, has come a long way in hammering the entertainment scene on the shores of Dubai from her London born and bred lifestyle.

Wonho’s comedy career began in November 2007, when he toured with Showtime Arabia’s Axis of Evil comedy tour. His first TV appearance was in ShowComedy’s follow-up mini-series, a nine episode reality documentary aptly dubbed “3 guys and Wonho”, which won a golden trophy at the 2008 Promax BDA awards ceremony held in Dubai. Wonho co-hosted Showtime’s “Friday Night Live” - then the region’s biggest stand-up comedy show - and starred alongside international comedians in “Friday Night Live – New World Order” (Friday Night Live 2). The show was well received by the audience and the subsequent eponymous TV special was a hit across Arab countries. Wonho is also a trained vocalist. He currently resides in Dubai and is presenting a weekly infotainment show called “Showmemore” which is presented in Arabic and highlights the latest offering in TV, film and celebrity interviews.

Being a self-styled, gregarious and obliging character, Hanane conjures up this great juggling act where she is a TV Presenter, Radio Presenter, Model, MC, Event Manager, Marketing and PR Consultant and a Team Building Facilitator/Leader. Hanane’s TV and Radio presenting work includes, among others; the Weekend Breakfast Show on Radio 1, City 7 show ‘Backstage Pass’, Music Nation – Exclusive DJ Mix Nights, and a number of IN TV and Knotika TV shows. She has featured in TV Commercials for Etisalat, Toyota, Panasonic, Emaar, Etihad and more; and Music Videos including Cher, Pras (Fugees) and Rashed Al Majed. Hanane has also modelled for many high profile companies/brands and for fashion designers in London and Dubai.
