Looking Forward
For the first time in its history, the emirate is set to welcome two million guests to stay in its hotels and long-stay apartments in 2011– an increase of nearly 15 per cent on the previous year.
Just 500 metres off the coast of Abu Dhabi city, the 27-square kilometre Saadiyat Island is undergoing a remarkable transformation to become a world-class leisure, residential, business and cultural hub of global proportions.
“Much of this increase can be attributed to our upgraded leisure offering, the quality and outstanding value of our accommodation product and the particular success of consumer orientated programmes such as the Yas Island Show Weekends,” explained Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority Strategy and Policy Director, Lawrence Franklin.
Over the next decade, the island will welcome the Zayed National Museum, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, Louvre Abu Dhabi, a performing arts centre and a maritime museum as it becomes the cultural capital of Abu Dhabi.

Regine Sixt talks Sixt centenary at World Travel Market 2011 Following Sixt’s 2010 victory at the World Travel Awards – where the brand won the title of World’s Leading Marketing Innovation – we caught up with Regine Sixt, Senior Executive Vice President Sixt International, to see what the future holds for the brand. World Travel Awards: What do you think it is that separates Sixt from its rivals? Regine Sixt: The Sixt family – now in the fourth generation – has been running the company for almost a century, the name and the managing family are the same. This adds a special charm to our customers. Furthermore, we are the only international company able to provide our customers with
handheld mobility services of all sorts; starting with offers for only one hour up to several years. We recently started innovative products such as car sharing with projects like DriveNow and we are industry pioneers in technological advancements with our mobile applications, special vehicle features and unique rental processes. Innovation is and has always been our drive; from the very beginning. We are also proud to provide our clients worldwide with our exclusive Sixt Limousine Service and our Full-Service-Leasing products. WTA: Many operators reported the first signs of recovery during 2011, has this been the case for Sixt? RS: Today we are one of the most profitable car rental companies worldwide; I would even
risk saying the most profitable of all. For example the first six months of 2010 have been the most successful in our history; we recorded a turnover of €756 billion and a net profit of €50.2 billion. So looking to the end of 2011 you might just see double these figures. WTA: You were awarded the title of Woman of the Year at the 2010 World Travel Awards. Could you tell us what this honour meant to you? RS: This award from this prestigious organisation was a true honour. I feel a strong responsibility to fulfil the expectations put into my marketing strategies and my charity organisation – the Regine Sixt Children’s Aid Foundation Drying little Tears.

Regine Sixt celebrates at the World Travel Awards.
Of course this recognition, as well as one for Sixt’s innovative marketing, is a source of great pride for Sixt, for me and for my team. It shows that we consistently and successfully evolved in the past 99 years from a small Munich family business into a global and publicly traded enterprise. I have also been awarded with the Citizen of the World award of Hadassah, the Bavarian Order of Merit, and a lot more. I consider these awards confirmation I did it right and we took the right steps and decisions on our way. But, you know, prizes are never a reason to lay back. They are a stimulation to strengthen our efforts in our mission to provide our customers with top quality.
WTA: Can you tell us a little about what Sixt has in store for 2012? RS: We have lots in store in 2012, making the car-rental business even more flexible, simple and secure. We already offer MobileKey, a revolutionary vehicle access system, ConnectedDrive from BMW, a concierge service and online check-in. We will celebrate one hundred years of Sixt with an impressive range of innovative ideas and products for our faithful customers. We will also expand in the United States, moving beyond Florida. Furthermore, we will expand in China, the fastest growing market, which is exciting and thrilling.
Having successfully expanded from its German roots, Sixt has become the leading mobility service provider in Europe. Together with licencees and partners, Sixt presently offers customers 3,500 rental locations worldwide.
And of course the world changes every day in the digital world, rest assure that Sixt will not run behind; we will always lead!

Tourism in Jamaica has weathered the storm and is set to emerge stronger than ever.
Jamaica named Caribbean’s Leading Destination at World Travel Awards Last month Jamaica was named Caribbean’s Leading Destination by the World Travel Awards at a Gala Ceremony hosted by Sandals Royal Caribbean. The holiday destination also scooped the titles of Caribbean’s Leading Tourist Board and Caribbean’s Leading Sports Destination in an unprecedented night of success.
Edmund Bartlett, Minister of Tourism, Jamaica, left, and Jamaica Tourist Board Chairman John Lynch celebrate at the World Travel Awards earlier this year.

Famously described by Christopher Columbus as the “fairest isle that eyes ever behold”, the destination offers an unforgettable holiday experience to an estimated two million international visitors each year.
Innovations for 2011 Jamaica’s position as a leader in the global tourism arena was further bolstered earlier this year when representatives from the island served in several key leadership positions within the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO). Tourism minister Edmund Bartlett was elected to serve as vice president for the 19th General Assembly of the UNWTO in South Korea, presiding over several sessions of the assembly. He commented: “It is an honour for Jamaica to serve in this capacity and our selection further underscores our good standing in the international arena and the confidence our counterparts place in Jamaica

as a leader within the tourism industry at the global level.” Also this year Jamaica celebrated the official opening of the new Historic Falmouth Port. Situated between the popular cruise destinations of Ocho Rios and Montego Bay, Historic Falmouth is the first-ever thematic cruise port that provides a convenient gateway for guests to embark on more than 60 exhilarating land experiences along the north coast of Jamaica. Additionally, ongoing revitalisations throughout the town of Falmouth offer guests an extensive array of cultural and historic experiences for an adventurous Jamaican port call on their cruise vacation. It is hardly surprising that Jamaica was recognised for three World Travel Awards last month during the Caribbean & the Americas ceremony event – itself hosted in Jamaica.
In responding to the presentation of these accolades, minister Bartlett said: “I must admit that we are very humbled by this recognition and the fact that through our efforts Jamaica has been able to perform well in world tourism and in so doing fuel the growth of the industry in the Caribbean.”
Looking Forward Jamaica’s stand at World Travel Market is set to be a hub or activity with the 2012 50th Anniversary of Independence celebrations, Jamaica Jazz & Blues, the Olympics and the creation of the Jamaica Village all set to be among the hot topics. Travel agents are invited visit the Jamaica stand to have their photo taken with Usain Bolt and Zippy (the new Jamaican Olympic mascot) who will present them with their gold Olympic JTB medals.

Sandals Resorts in $500 million expansion following World Travel Awards success Recognised as the Caribbean’s Leading Hotel Brand once again by the World Travel Awards, Sandals Resorts is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year Sandals Grande Riviera Beach and Villa Golf Resort.

During three decades of unprecedented success the brand has earned a worldwide reputation for providing two people in love with the most romantic vacation experience in the Caribbean. Currently, there are 14 ‘Luxury Included’ Sandals Resorts located in Jamaica, Antigua, Saint Lucia and The Bahamas. Each offers stunning beachfront locations; a choice of à la carte restaurants, from white-glove dining to barefoot elegance; luxurious accommodations in a range of categories; unrivalled watersports; Butler Service for truly indulgent pampering; Sandals Weddings by Martha Stewart; and signature Red Lane Spas.
Innovations for 2011 To celebrate its 30th anniversary, Sandals recently outlined a $500 million initiative to reinvigorate its product in the Caribbean. One of the most exciting developments is the $60 million investment at Sandals Grande Riviera Beach & Villa Golf Resort in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. The property now includes the all-new Riviera Beach Club, the Riviera Villas and the newly refurbished Red Lane Spa. This year has also seen the development of the company’s first official ‘Voluntourism’ programme, introduced in June as the latest Sandals Foundation initiative. The new ‘Read Road Trip’ initiative is a volunteer literacy programme aimed at improving reading and comprehension skills of local children in participating schools.
Sandals is recognised for its Luxury Included all-inclusive holidays.
Also in 2011, the visionary leadership of Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart has been recognised, with World Travel Awards presenting a rare Tourism Pioneer Award to the Sandals’ chairman. Celebrating his role in rejuvenating Caribbean tourism, with Sandals alone bringing millions of dollars to the region, World Travel Awards presented this prestigious honour at the Caribbean & The Americas Gala Ceremony earlier this year.
Looking Forward

In 2012, Sandals is looking to expand its offering in the group bookings market. Adam Stewart, Chief Executive Officer, Sandals Resorts, revealed: “We have spotted huge potential within group bookings. Whether that is golf, spa, weddings or diving we have the kind of product that allows us to cater for groups superbly. “For example, the opening of Sandals Emerald Bay - and with it the Emerald Reef Golf Club and a large Red Lane Spa - is perfectly suited to welcoming groups.” He concluded: “We expect good things from last minute wedding booking also.” Red Lane Spa reception at Sandals..
